GORGEOUS ISLAM.......2006-04-01

Simply a spectacular book. The text is fascinating and the images are first rate. The art and architecture of Islam is elegant and beautiful, obviously when you think of Islamic Architecuture of this period you think of the Taj Mahal, which of course, is one of the most spectacular buildings in the world, but there are so many others. This book will make you really appreciate the Architectuere and Art of this wonderful religion. Highly recommended.

We have all, at one time or another, heard this expression and may have left it at that. This book leads you into the aftercome of that same light. The creation of colour. The great fashion photographer Martin Munkacsi was born in Hungary in 1896, spent the 20s and 30s in Berlin, and immigrated to New York City in 1934. For many years the best paid photographer of his time and a profound influence on photographers like Richard Avedon, his work was out of fashion at the time of his death in 1963. Recently, Munkacsi has emerged from history as one of the most significant talents of the twentieth century, having shaped the beginnings of modern photojournalism, set in motion a previously static medium and combined fact-finding accuracy with a highly formal aesthetic standard. Munkacsi was an outstanding representative of the 'Neues Sehen' (New Way of Seeing), certainly photography's weightiest contribution to advanced art. His fashion and sports photography were both groundbreaking and unmatched. If you like Cartier-Bresson, you'll centainly love Munkacsi. Recommended to anyone in love with photography.

Buying a Television Set, a Family Affair.......2000-09-14

This wonderful book captures the memories and spirit of the Polk Brothers retail establishment. Long before Circuit City and Best Buy, Polk Brothers sold hard goods (TV's, Radios, etc) to the families of Chicagoland. It was quite the event for my father to pile the family into the stationwagon to go to Polk City and purchase a counsole Zenith television for several hundred dollars. As a child I remember receiving a toy premium after a purchase. We received inflatable airplanes, 7-UP, and Ann Landers books. Our family home was furnished by Polk City. Polk City was a warm, chaotic, intoxicating place to make a purchase. The book reflects this and brings Polk Brothers alive. The author paints a warm, interesting story of a Chicago institution and captures the family event of what it was to go to Polk Brothers. A real connection to Chicago and its families. A nice read even if you are not from Chicago.

A good history of a successful business........1998-06-14

This story tells the story of the Polks (which was not the original name), who were a family that came to the USA from Europe with big dreams and hopes. These dreams were fulfilled when Polk Bros., the first retailer of its kind became successfull. Polk Bros. set the tone for all future retailers with its new ideas. My favorite part of the book, was reading about the many big and weird promotions Polk Bros. had, including renting out the Chicago Stadium for a humungous b-day celebration. Read this book (of course) to find out more.

Although history has not been kind to Warren G. Harding, with personal and political scandals dominating Harding historiography until the 1960s, historians have reexamined and reappraised his presidency in the past twenty years. This volume, the first full-length bibliography on Harding, provides full access to the Harding literature. Including over 3,000 entries, the work provides wide coverage of foreign policy and domestic policies that were formative for the entire decade of the 1920s. In addition to political and administration coverage, the book includes Harding's personal life and times. Very different from the movie, not in a bad way.......2007-05-19

I decided to read this book after watching the movie. There are couple of scenes that are in both, but I found the movie much funnier. The banter is missing between the siblings in the book, BUT this doesn't make the book a bad read. It's actually an enjoyable quick read. A passage from this book makes me want to stir some white wine into boxed mac and cheese. Apparently it's delicious.

A lonely kindergaten teacher.......2007-01-11

To some degree, a story of a woman contemplating her navel, her unusual family and her rather empty life. It was turned into a hilarious movie, while an obvious chick flick was considerably better than the novel, largely due to the extraordinarily pleasing leading characters and an improved story line.

Patti Linnell got it covered; no need to reinvent the wheel........2006-09-09

Patti Linnell did such a nice job reviewing this book that I don't have much too add. This is not a boring look, the writing is fun and entertaining and occasionally even hilarious. The ending is weird and sort of unsatisfying, but I'm one who likes the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In spite of the chuckles and the strong characters (some, like Dottie, were over the top), it was a pleasant read, not memorable, so I'm going to have to go with 3.

I rate books as follows:

Claire Cook does have talent..........2006-07-08

I really don't like reading books that has a cover that features women's feet. Usually women's feet = dumb book. Must Love Dogs featured all the regular chick lit norms:

1) The conflict in the story must not be life threatening - no AIDS, cancer, etc. Or too serious, like terrorism or stock market crashes.
2) Another character has to be tall and thin and blonde to help point out how not tall, thin and blonde she is, BUT it must come out in the end that she was secretly jealous the whole time. Towards the end there has to be a speech of "I've always admired you and I thought you hated me!!"
3) The Heroine must have one really hip old person in her life, relative or not.
4) The Heroine cannot be married, she must be in love with: a) a guy who treats her like crap b) a guy who is either above or below her extremely on the social totem pole or c) a gay guy. Maybe all three?
5) Most of all, the heroine must never have any sort of strong political, religious or social views or think about any subject that might cause her to think more on any of these three subjects.

They thing that made me not hate this book (except for the weird sappy ending where they all come together like some odd Christmas special on that weird bus. The ending was like a strange dream sequence. I kept waiting for Neil Diamond or Tom Jones to appear to lead them all in a brilliant rendition of Auld Lang Syne.) was that Claire Cook does write very well and is very witty and warm. Oh Claire Cook! Write another book! Use your powers for good not evil!

Story Kit for Exalted.......2004-03-12

While Time of Tumult was released prior to the creation of large swathes of the Exalted world, it still stands up to these new pieces. The book is designed for use by Storytellers (GMs, DMs, whatever you want to call them.), and shows off four adventures that are very different in genre.

The first and second adventure deal with a location called The Invisible Fortress, getting there and discovering its secrets. It combines elements of exploration with a ghost story, and accomplishes both.

The third adventure deals with the kidnapping of a powerful spirit's lover, and his request is that the players get her back alive. Along the way, you see the underbelly of Exalted's Celestial Bureaucracy and haggle with spirits. It's a classic tale of saving the damsel in distress.

The fourth and final story can only be described as a war epic. Invaders from beyond Creation are conducting a crusade in the name of the Machine God (they live inside it). It introduces a new kind of Exalted, the Alchemicals, and provides a timeline that goes on for years in the game world.

While Exalted is designed to be modular, Time of Tumult stands as a sampling of the adventures that can be had in the Exalted game world. I would heartily recommend it to any Storyteller wanting to run Exalted.

Greater than the sum of its parts.......2000-11-29

Based on the wonderful TV serial written by Robin Bland (actually a pseudonym for Terrance Dicks, who disapproved of the changes made by the script editor), Terrance Dicks has produced a book worth your reading.

The TARDIS arrives on the planet Karn at the apparent direction of the Time Lords (or maybe it just isn't going where directed). Karn has a number of spaceships which have crashed on it, with apparently no survivors - any who do are being harvested for spare parts by Condo, the servant of Dr. Mehendri Solon. But what is he using them for?

The heavy gothic overtones of this story are wonderful (although probably better if you watch it on video...) and you can plainly see the influence of the movie 'Frankenstein' in many parts. But beyond that, you will see a great Doctor Who story which is not only wonderfully self-contained but extends the back story of the series.

Anita lacks ethical integrity.......2006-04-14

Anita doesn't believe a woman making a false charge of rape should be charged for destroying young boys' lives. She promotes sexist stereotypes to male-bash and rationalize how women should aways be given the benefit of the doubt, while men (who are all evil) should prove their inncence. It's no wonder why she's no lawyer anymore.

The New Ethics.......2005-11-27

The New Ethics is written by Anita Allen. In her book the author emphasises the need for understanding today's moral dilemas and how to learn and grow from these examples so that we maintain a standard of ethical living for ourselves. I think that the author does a good job in telling the stories of past ethical problems in a interesting way and in a way that I can apply it to my own life.
The author gives us some guidelines on how to evaluate and solve moral dilemas of our time. The following are some of her main points:
1. All people have something to contribute to the moral landscape of today. Everyone is important.
2. Avoid temptation and cheating.
3. Don't rely on I'm sorry. Know that not doing it in the first place means more than apologies.
4. Understand your mistakes and the mistakes of others and learn from them.
5. Educate and foster good ethics and care in our young people.
6. Digging at ourselves allows us to uncover ethical questions that need to be answered.
7. Educate oneself so that you know what questions to ask.
8.Know that your ethical choices affect others in good ways and bad ways.
9. Religion and tradition are important in giving us ethical backgrounds but it's okay to question these teachings so that we evolve with the new times.
These arguments are presented through stories of personal experience and through the history of others.
I think these guidelines are a great way of making sure that a person of today is striving to be a ethical person.This book helps you understand the need to care about how our actions can hurt ourselves and others more than we think. It also helps us to understand the mistakes of others through stories and forgotten events that should have helped us make evaluations and judgements of our own lives. Her arguments are valid and she seems to be a fair person on evaluating herself and others actions.
The author ends the book with the quote "Every human life takes on a singular majesty when dedicated to the noble quest for ethical living". This sums up her points that everyone is an important part of how our society lives and acts. And that it is each of our responsibilities to look at ourselves everyday and ask ourselves if we are doing our very best to live a ethical existence or are we falling short.

Great food for cold weather.......2000-12-28

Delightfully, this simple and useful cookbook quotes poet Theodore Roethke on snow, in its Introduction. This 'snow country' is not the same freezing place that your car needs shoveling out of every few days. Rather, it's an exquisite and pristine weekend wilderness where you snowshoe, ski, or - back at the cabin - quietly read or maybe just beat everyone at Scrabble. The fine photos of snowy mountains and inviting cabin windowsills and a few interiors complement the equally beautiful photos of the hearty and appetizing food.

The recipes are mostly for the sort of American "bistro" food to which many urbanites might be accustomed. It is essentially humble, but not necessarily quick to prepare. (Someone might like to stay back at the cabin, in order to cook.) There is "Four Seasons Pizza," "Three-Onion Soup with Gruyere Croutons," an omelet and a frittata, various gratins and stews, hearty hot sandwiches, and simple, good-sounding desserts and breakfasts. In addition, there are hot drinks such as Irish coffee, hot buttered rum, glogg, and chai.

The ingredients should best be purchased before heading up to snow country. Pearl onions, fresh ginger, turnips, tomatillo salsa, allspice berries, prosciutto, and fontina cheese are some of the things that might be hard to find, once out of town. A few paragraphs on "The Snow Country Pantry" gives the reader advice on this.

Nutritional analysis (minus sugars) is provided for each recipe along with a useful note on high-altitude cooking.

This is a nice, small collection of seemingly foolproof recipes to satisfy both the winter athletes, unfussy and famished after a day on the slopes, and the folks who've spent the day indoors, enjoying the light, the views, the board games - or the preparation of some incredible meals.

The smooth surface, pleasing shape, and ready availability of the egg make it a wonderful canvas on which to paint, dye, engrave, draw, etch, or batik. This slim book offers basic directions on purchasing, cleaning, decorating, and storing eggs, as well as photos of intricately adorned eggs; although the photos are not top quality, they do show that the degree of detail some of these artists are able to achieve on this small area is at times amazing. Greater depth of detail in the instructions would have improved the presentation, but it does serve as a decent general introduction to the craft for those willing to experiment. --Amy Handy

I was really kind of disappointed with this book. I was just expecting... more. The information is ok, but it's not definitive in most senses. I mean, it's like the author THINKS what he's saying is true, but really not sure? Or more like when you hear someone telling a folk tale and it sounds real but you really know it's not. This is an OK book but not one I'd take too seriously.
