Good overview of the ad business............2002-02-02
If you are new to the advertising business or are interested in breaking into advertising then this book gives a great overview of the industry. The case studies that are prevelent throughout the book are very useful in helping to understand the basic concepts of the advertising business.
what a waste of money!.......2001-07-01
don't bother with this book. I found the title to be misleading to say the least, it is more an autobiography about an ad exec. Or, an introduction to advertising for high school students, using examples and photos. I had to make an effort to get through it and finally gave up about a third of the way in. who rated this 4 stars??? the author?
A book essential for our times........1999-02-14
This book has been invaluable in revamping the entire marketing division of my company. Hats off to the inspirational, engaging, information anecdotes. Informative and entertaining. A real hands-on approach to the art and science of marketing!
Book Description
The doctrine of "Islamic economics" entered debates over the social role of Islam in the mid-twentieth century. Since then it has pursued the goal of restructuring economies according to perceived Islamic teachings. Beyond its most visible practical achievement--the establishment of Islamic banks meant to avoid interest--it has promoted Islamic norms of economic behavior and founded redistribution systems modeled after early Islamic fiscal practices.
In this bold and timely critique, Timur Kuran argues that the doctrine of Islamic economics is simplistic, incoherent, and largely irrelevant to present economic challenges. Observing that few Muslims take it seriously, he also finds that its practical applications have had no discernible effects on efficiency, growth, or poverty reduction. Why, then, has Islamic economics enjoyed any appeal at all? Kuran's answer is that the real purpose of Islamic economics has not been economic improvement but cultivation of a distinct Islamic identity to resist cultural globalization.
The Islamic subeconomies that have sprung up across the Islamic world are commonly viewed as manifestations of Islamic economics. In reality, Kuran demonstrates, they emerged to meet the economic aspirations of socially marginalized groups. The Islamic enterprises that form these subeconomies provide advancement opportunities to the disadvantaged. By enhancing interpersonal trust, they also facilitate intragroup transactions.
These findings raise the question of whether there exist links between Islam and economic performance. Exploring these links in relation to the long-unsettled question of why the Islamic world became underdeveloped, Kuran identifies several pertinent social mechanisms, some beneficial to economic development, others harmful.

conspiracy theorist.......2006-07-27
The author is very likely a Kurdish nationalist, not implausibly a quite supporter of the PKK. As a Communist, he has no room for religion. His analysis is misleading, basically he runs after Muslims under the banner of Islamism, he seeks to undermine the Islamic religion to satisfy his own psychological needs. The author has suppervised the work of others who also claimed to have proved that Islam does not work. The author does not use objective scientific methods, he basically writes in a way that confirms his own priori conclusions. Read the book, if you wish, but with such qualifications in mind. You may read it to understand how the bigot's mind actually works.
Timur Kuran.......2006-07-07
This is not a good book. It is rather descriptive in nature, poorly referenced, tests no hypotheses empirically and is too wordy. The author makes claims without any substantive evidence. He accumulates paragraphs and twists them in the way that leads him to his pre-assembled conclusions. The author does not seem to have the statistical tools of analysis, a great deficiency for a university professor. The author does not seem well-versed in the history of the Islamic world nor does he understand Islamic economics. He picks up few concepts he thinks will lead him to the conclusions he already knew, so he squeezes Islamic economics into a small area. Contrary to his claims, the main factor leading to the economic decline of the modern Muslim world is the adoption of Marxist ideology - almost every single Muslim country has adopted a Communist regime (leading to political repression by definition). This is not Islamic but rather Jewish Economics. Another factor, among others, would be colonization. Professor Kuran is not an expert on Islam, he would have done better had he sought endeavors in other areas that do not require rigorous empirical testing, perhaps literary work?.
truly, truly necessary.......2005-08-31
While this book touches on the myriad ways in which Islam, when you get right down to it, is a recipe for poverty, its central focus is on the definitions, history, successes and failures, hypocrisies, and possibly viability of "Islamic economics."
In case you need to know: no, the man is certainly not hesitant to criticize Islam, Muslims, or the Koran and does so on numerous occasions. Always, though, respectfully and in a well-evidenced way. This is certainly not a book by someone trying to "sell you" Qur'anic economics.
Regarding the difficulty of the economics herein, a general reader could certainly handle it, as there are no graphs or tables to disconcert one. However, the thing is written in a formal academic style complete with extensive footnotes, so it's not quite for the lay reader either. In any case, although it is a thinnish book, I found that it required slow and careful reading.
Note that though the book was published in 2004, the individual chapters in every case were originally stand-alone essays (but all by the same guy) published individually (usually in journals) before that. Some well before that.
The author, by the way, is a secular Turk who has taught at Princeton.
I found the thing literately and clearly written, and VERY useful, considering there are not many books like it.

Book Description
This book describes in fascinating detail the history of the use of anesthesia in childbirth and in so doing offers a unique perspective on the interaction between medical science and social values. Dr. Donald Caton traces the responses of physicians and their patients to the pain of childbirth from the popularization of anesthesia to the natural childbirth movement and beyond. He finds that physicians discovered what could be done to manage pain, and patients decided what would be done. Dr. Caton discusses how nineteenth-century physicians began to think and act like scientists; how people learned to reject the belief that pain and suffering are inevitable components of life; and how a later generation came to think that pain may have important functions for the individual and society. Finally he shows the extent to which cultural and social values have influenced "scientific" medical decisions.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2002-05-27
This book presents the historical background behind obstetric anesthesia. In covering the developments in anesthesia, the author also summarizes major developments in the general field of medicine, especially since the 1840s. He stresses how much medicine changed from 1800 to 1900, and how the discovery and development of anesthesia played an important role in these changes. He also points out how medicine evolved from being based on tradition and assumptions into a truly scientific field during this period, and how by the end of this period, doctors could no longer simply claim that a procedure worked- -they actually had to prove it with carefully designed studies.
One trend that Caton identifies in this book is how much power patients have wielded in the decision to adopt or disregard anesthesia in childbirth. In the 1840s, many leading women demanded the use of anesthesia from doctors who were reluctant to try the new-fangled and untested idea. The turn of the twentieth century found feminist groups campaigning for access to anesthesia for all women who wanted it. Nevertheless, modern feminists protest against the medicalization of childbirth, and eschew the same anesthesia that their great grandmothers fought so hard for.
This book is very well written. Abundant citations to primary sources are found in the endnotes. Some readers may find the style a bit academic. This book isn't really intended to help a reader decide for or against a "natural" childbirth, but readers will find sound information here that gives them the background behind both sides of the debate.
Interesting medical and social issues.......2001-06-08
My husband and I both found this book very informative and well written. Having received it as a gift while expecting our second child this timely and thoughtful gift gave us new issues and angles to consider regarding anesthesia and childbirth. This book is written in a clear, concise style and is easily understood by those not in the medical field. I would highly recommend this book to expectant mothers/fathers and to their ob/gyn physicians and nurses. We gave this book to the physician who delivered our beautiful son.
what a blessing we have this book.......2000-02-12
The obvious problem this author has is that if you have not given birth or are not thinking about it, you may not be that interested in the topic. Actually, Caton does quite a good job of showing how debates about use of anesthesia in childbirth tie in to larger cultural debates about medicine, progress, and the meaning of pain. In simple language, and with a good effort at giving all points of view fairly, he goes over both the scientific history of how drugs became available for childbirth and the social history of how the public (including doctors) responded. Yes, I did read it just after I had my child -- and I enjoyed it. I live in Japan where the debate over ``natural'' childbirth rages on. I think this book would make a nice gift for your intelligent friend who's having a baby (for goodness' sake, she'll get enough stuffed animals from other people).

Boudicca: The Warrior Queen
ASIN: 1862271941 |
Book Description
If you want to know what really happened during the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43 and Queen Boudicca's rebellion of AD 60, the author has collected together the actual words of the Roman historians who are the real source of all that is known about these events. The result reads rather like a collection of journals or diaries that might have been kept by eye-witness observers nearly two thousand years ago - but is anything but dry and dusty as the authors were some of the best writers of their day.
Customer Reviews:
not the book I wanted.......2007-02-16
Disappointed by the end of the second chapter, I sent this book back to Amazon. The writing style reminded me of that of a freshman year college student trying to stretch her measly research to fill out a ten page paper using the sort of logic that is generally limited to those newly entering the world of academia. (To wit, I have a fact: it could mean one thing, it could mean another. Or perhaps a third.)
The premise of the book is an excellent one: a sort of verbal archaeological exploration of ancient events. Instead, it read as if the author discovered he lacked the sources to make that exploration, but decided to go ahead with the project rather than attack differently or scrap it altogether.

Birding on Borrowed Time.......2003-07-31
I yesterday recieved a copy of the book Birding on Borrowed Time written by Phoebe Snetsinger!
I start reading it after recieving it few hours later and finished it hours later. I have to admit she lived a life that was very intreshing as shocking.
The birded on a way she did, I don't prefer myself, almost all here trips where guidance tours and there was not the kind of adventure in it as I normally have during my trips abroad.
She was fortunate to have enough money and a tolerable family that suported here in many ways to archieve the breaking of the 8.000 species limit, and she did it on her own way.
What I found a point of critism is than in the 1997 and 1998 chapter somethimes you have detailed reports in several quests to find a single species and before these chapters only vaguely things where told about how she find the vairy species. The book would be much better if more details in here quest where written down in the first chapters!
Over all a very nice and intresthing book, and it's nice to read several times, and dream away what you're chances would be if you had the opportunity to travel that much all around the world.
Surely an document that gives an insight in the legend she became! An all the trouble she got to archieve the goal she was after!
A great story by a great woman.......2003-06-24
This autobiography by the world's foremost birdwatcher is an inspiring story for everyone. Phoebe Snetsinger, at the age of 34, and after being diagnosed with malignant melanoma and given 6 months to live, dedicated herself to birding. For Phoebe this meant not only finding the birds, but learning everything she could about them, and then recording her experiences in great detail. In spite of recurrent episodes of her cancer, a gang rape in New Guinea, and many other misadventures, she succeeded in seeing over 8000 species of birds, a world record that may never be surpassed. She visited almost every area of the world several times, and tells her story with wit and charm. The book has many beautiful illustrations.
For anyone interested in birds this is a must read; others will enjoy reading the well written adventures of an intrepid lady.
Tragically, Phoebe was killed in a bus accident in Madagascar about 2 years ago, shortly after seeing one of her most wanted birds, a red-shouldered vanga.

'Golfers are the luckiest people on earth,' Hendricks promises. But an incomplete understanding of three simple secrets can mar their love of the game-and of life itself. Hendricks, bestselling author, corporate coach, and business visionary, came to golf late in life. He found the game a frustrating puzzle until he discovered the master keys that brought him great success. Hendricks learned that in mastering the three secrets of golf, a player learns everything he must to succeed in business and life. Hendricks now focuses his influential consulting business and lecture series on these three secrets. Deceptively simple, but enormously powerful, the three secrets revealed in Conscious Golf can change the way you approach your game, your business, and even your life. Conscious Golf will appeal to Hendricks's many fans and will also speak to anyone who has ever swung a club, planned a power lunch, or simply sat down to examine the hooks and slices of everyday life.
Customer Reviews:
A book for non-golfers too.......2004-01-23
I first purchased this book because I was looking for something to help the eternally finicky golf game. This book has actually been helpful for my golf game. But it has been even more helpful and inspirational for the business side of my life. I think the three secrets are extremely important to keep in mind every day if you want to be successful in your current job and also be able to move ahead with your career.
I thought the book was so good that I have gotten more copies for my family, friends, and co-workers. One co-worker that has never golfed before thought the book has extremely valuable concepts for work. Getting my co-worker to read a golf book was the most difficult part. Making a new energetic believer in the three secrets was easy.
Conscious Golf Helps Tennis Game.......2003-08-20
I loved reading Conscious Golf, and it has had a huge impact on my tennis game! I just played tennis for the first time in 3 weeks this morning (after reading the book) and focused on completing each swing. This made the most noticeable difference on my serve. In fact, the person I played against (who, in the past, has beaten me by substantial margins), asked, "What happened to your serve?!" since she could not seem to return it! She was convinced that I spent my 10 day trip to Ojai at a tennis camp on the sly, instead of the Conscious Living for Professionals Training with Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks!
The 3 secrets and the 3 g's - Golf, Genius and Gay Hendricks.......2003-08-05
I have worked in the Golf Industry for the past 13 years (10 years as a golf professional within the PGA of America) and have only understood the importance of the second secret from this book in the last month through Gay's teachings. It has re-awakened my passion for golf and the reality of playing without the pain from my past 2 back operations. Thank you Gay for expanding into the golfing arena and sharing your knowledge with me (and others), I now have the tools to choose endless fun in golf, business and life.
These profoundly simple ideas can change your life.......2003-07-28
I wanted to read the book over and over and over again. It really could be this simple and there's only one way to find out for sure...do it. I take that back, don't do it...live it.
At ClubWeb Solutions we recommend this book to our customers...people like us who have experiences in business as well as in and around the game.
The Big Three All In One Book.......2003-07-22
I have never felt the desire to write a review before but this author is so special I want to make sure you do not miss out. He has given such amazing gifts to the world in all of his books and here is another for the golfing community. The way to achieve your on-going maximum potential in golf, business and relationships. All this is contained in one easy and fun book to read.
As a PGA Golf Professional I wholeheartedly recommend Conscious Golf to golf students, business executives and fellow golf professionals. It is a valuable tool for me to add to business golf clinics and etiquette seminars. It teaches the lessons needed to play golf and life consciously. Golf is an honorable game based on integrity and that mirrors this authors way of living.

Customer Reviews:
This is the greatest book!!.......2007-03-13
I bought this book before I got married and it was the BEST THING I ever bought!! It was very well organized and not overwhelming at all. They gave advice and offered some things and had tons of websites that made it so easy to do stuff! LOVE IT LOVE IT! I highly recommend!
Best Gift I ever gave.......2007-01-18
I got this for a gift for my sister-in-law. She is getting married and couldn't find a decent planner. She said they were all too expensive or too uppity with alot of stuff that she didn't/couldn't use. This was a perfect find. My SIL has been thanking me for the last 2 months!
Fantastic!.......2005-01-08
I absolutely adore this book! I would be nowhere in my wedding planning without it. To make things a bit easier, though, I took out the comb, three-hole punched it and put it into a 3-ring binder. I also bought some folders and some stick-on tabs, hole punched the folders and organized it all in the binder. Now? Now I carry this thing EVERYWHERE! The lists for inputting information about vendors and receptions sites and everything are a GODSEND, and I have tons of photocopies of each of them in the binder. I've ended up with a few other crappy wedding planners, and none of them even compare to this one. I haven't even so much as looked at the other ones since I got this one! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Not as Useful as We Expected.......2004-06-19
This was the first book I bought when my daughter became engaged. I didn't find it very useful, and neither the bride nor the groom ever looked at it. It has long lists of "things to consider", including things like handing out nail polish to bridesmaids. Then there are "dos and don'ts", including things like "don't be controlling." There are many worksheets, and separate pages listing duties for each person in the wedding party, including the flower girl and ring bearer. This might be something for the nervous bride who needs to feel sure that she has thought of absolutely everything, or it might simply make you nervous. It is not a fun book, and we found that many of the pretty coffee table bridal books included all the necessary forms and checklists.
Great book with lots of pictures for ideas!.......2004-02-14
This book was very helpful in helping me plan for my wedding. Although it doesn't have any tabs for each area of a wedding, it would have been a big help so that I wouldn't have to thumb through the book to search for specifics. Has great outlines to follow and good for self planned weddings. It has a lot of great deocrating ideas and money saving tips as well.

Another enjoyable read........2005-03-23
I had just finished reading the first book "Stories of Dogs" , when I saw this one had been released. I enjoyed the first one so much, I had to get this one to add to my library.
It was every bit as enjoyable as the first and I fell in love with the puppy dog on the cover. I laughed, I cried, I understood the emotions of so many of those in the book.

Book Description
This beautiful book presents in large format the story of Margaret Tafoys's paramount place in the evolution of Tewa Pueblo pottery in Santa Clara, New Mexico. This monumental work is divided into four major sections examining a history of the Pueblo people, Margaret Tafoya's life, Santa Clara pottery making techniques, and the Tafoya family and descendants. Because Margaret Tafoya has adhered to the traditions of her pueblo in both her lifestyle and her ceramics, these traditions are now being passed on through her children and grandchildren. Margaret Tafoya demonstrates the very best in Tewa Pueblo pottery. Enhanced by the spectacular photographs-more than a hundred of which are in full color-this books presents a tribute to the Pueblo ceramic artisans in general and especially, to Margaret Tafoya-a living icon and vital bridge between Tewa past future.
