Good but not what I expected........1999-12-07

I could not help but be disappointed with this book. I was expecting discussion and color prints from the "Modern Japanese Prints" , in contrast to the traditional ukiyo-e style. This art movement (from the early 1900's until present day), was split in two directions, the "shin-hanga" (new prints) and "sosaku-hanga" (creative prints). Unfortunately, this book only covers from the late 1950's until the early 1990's. This is the time period when the authors, Mary and Norman Tolman began their collection. (Thus they have no prints or discussion on Hashiguchi Goyo, Munaka Shiko and Onchi Koshiro.) The only postwar artist they include is Saito Kiyoshi. They concentrate on contemporary Japanese Prints, most of which followed the sosaku-hanga direction. They include many artists such as: Saito Kiyoshi, Sekino Jun'ichiro, Sasajima Kihei, Hiratsuka Un'ichi, Clifton Karhu and many others. I liked many of the artists but they are contemporary, to say the least. It also has an excellent discussion of printing techniques, what to look for when collecting, explanations on editions and artists proofs. A good book within its specified time period. Color prints are very well-done.

Quick and clever!.......2000-10-20

What a fun read. These essays make a great collection of funny musings----from an earthy woman's point of view. The author has a good ear to some of the absurdities of our culture, from viagra and ex-politicians doing comercials, to Tupperware and the atomic bomb. And the cartoons scattered between the pages range from silly to satirically biting. I'd definitely enjoy reading more from this author.

Mary Hirsch is a treasure! I was a huge fan of hers while I was in Minnesota and now I hope to spread the word out here on the East Coast. This book is insightful, hilarious and so true. Her essay on the loss of her microwave over bring tears -- from laughing so much!!

Outrageously Funny.......2000-10-02

I have been a fan of Mary Hirsch's writing for years. She's a humor columnist for the Minnesota Women's Press and I only pick up the paper to read her. After all, I'm a guy but I find her humor crosses any gender gap - she's that good. (My wife is also one her biggest fans.) The book is a collection of the best of her columns and additional writings on such subjects as Minnesota's Governor Jessie Ventura. She manages to combine wit, satire, with intelligent writing. My favorite chapter is her thoughts on Hebonics - The Language of Man. I would be offended if it wasn't just so darn true and laugh-out-loud funny. I would highly recommend this book to anyone - regardless of gender.

Dull and disappointing.......2005-06-11

I bought this book because I am an investor in REITS and wanted to get a deeper insight into comparing different REITs to find the best ones to invest in. I wanted to be able to read the balance sheets of several different REITs and decide which is the better investment. This book left me bored and no further forward.

The main problem is that each chapter is written by a different "expert" on a particular topic such as "Asset Allocation" or "Institutional Investing". Firstly these experts may be great money managers but they are dull writers without a jot of personality. The chapter on Tax Treatment of REITs is a lifeless regurgitation of the tax code. Worse, the editors did not steer each contributor strictly enough to avoid repetition and as a result every chapter begins with yet another review of REIT history.

There was no analysis of different REIT business models, such as trading CMOs compared with Residential or Office space. There is no analysis of how to tell good REIT managers from ordinary ones. I was optimistic about the chapter on Asset Allocation to see how REITs fit in with stock and bonds in your portfolio but again I was disapppointed. After grinding through page after page differential equations the chapter fizzled out with no mention of reccomended asset allocation ratios.

I gave the book 2 stars instead of none because the data seems to be accurate and authoritative but then so is the maintenance manual for my vacuum cleaner. A $75 book has a duty to do more than assemble boring facts in sequence.

I don't really know who this book is targeted towards. If you are going to be a junior paper pusher employed by a REIT it may give you a head start but the rest of the planet should look somewhere else.

An excellent overview of the REIT Industry.......1999-07-17

The book provided an insightful overview of the REIT industry. The book was organized by various topics relating to investing and managing a REIT. The chapters were written by practioners and academics working in the different REIT industry areas. The authors were able to provide vital insights into their areas of expertise. As a new REIT employee I learned about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for my company and the REIT industry as a whole. some of the chapters were a bit technical in nature; particularly the analysis on historical private verses public REIT returns. Overall the book should be required reading for REIT investors and Managers as well.

Low quality compared to 3rd edition.......2007-05-30

I have been using field guides for over 30 years and for the last 20 have carried the 2nd and then 3rd edition of the Ntl. Geographic guide faithfully on travel and into the field. I have the Sibley's, Kaufman, Peterson's, Golden and plenty of others but have continued to use the Ntl Geographic when I only want to pack one book. I finally purchased the 4th edition when the price dropped to under $10. I am really disappointed in the quality compared to the 3rd edition.

The colors are not as rich and in most cases are much duller than the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions. Nearly every bird depicted in the 4th edition will appear to be lighter than it was depicted in the 3rd. What does this mean in terms of your use of the 4th to identify a bird? For complex birds seen at a distance with many similar looking possibilities, (shorebirds and gulls, for instance) you may misjudge what you have seen because you are looking at a bird much darker than it is depicted in the 4th edition of the Ntl Geographic guide.

There are other problems related to quality in the 4th edition. Throughout the book there are numerous instances of black and white bleeding on wingbars and bills producing a blue where there should be none. The shrike page is the most obvious example, but it also occurs on the flycatchers and woodpecker pages.

Thinking that perhaps I had just ended up with a bad copy or misprint, I verified this problem by checking the 4th edition at several stores in different part of the country. The dullness is universal and the blue bleeding seems to be a widespread problem but it manifests itself in different parts of the book depending on the copy. Up until the 3rd edition a birder had to purchase the Ntl Geographic guide at a specialty store or directly from National Geographic. Not sure if this is the reason for the change but, starting with the 4th edition, this guide is available at chain book stores and wholesale warehouses. Perhaps National Geographic has lowered its quality control standards for new markets.

Finally, there are some technical problems with some of the new pages. Only a few pages are updated from the 3rd to 4th editions but surprisingly there are problems with three of them. The first one is excusable since the bird is so scarce in North American waters. The streaked shearwater undertail coverts have extended a good 1-2 inches from the 3rd to the 4th editions of the guide. The effect is that the brown tail will appear shorter than on a real streaked shearwater. The next one is comical, but again not a bird anyone is likely to see. The Cory's dark morph of the least bittern is illustrated in the 4th edition in front of a cattail sponge that would set a world record if it were an accurate depiction. It appears to be about a half size larger than it should in comparison to the bittern, which in turn might make you think a least bittern is even smaller than it is in real life. Last, the illustrations of mourning, MacGilvray's and Connecticut warblers on the new oporornis page all look like cutouts with no depth compared to the better illustrations of these birds in the 3rd edition.

I purchased this for my wife & I as amatuer bird watchers. It is so inclusive of breeds, locality, features and details. In addition it is compact and handy wherever you go in our country. We both recommend for the amateur & experienced bird watcher.

One of the standards.......2007-02-07

This title has been around for what seems like forever. It is not quite as large or definitive as Sibley's, but unlike Sibley's it is much easier to fit in the pocket of the jacket I usually wear when photographing birds. Normally I keep the Sibley's in the car and carry this one with me in the field. I highly recomend both.

John Kobal's The Art of the Great Hollywood Portrait Photographers is as good as his book on Hollywood with Kevin Brownlow, which is one of the essential books to read (and one of the essential TV series to watch) for anyone interested in movies.

Kobal gives an illuminating account of the function of the movies during the Depression, contrasted with eg Walker Evan's photography, and explains 'glamour', tying movie stars in with the Venus from Milos and the Mona Lisa quite convincingly. Well thought, well written. Chapters follow on the organisation of the studios, how publicity was done as it has rarely been done before or since. And some beautiful images - Garbo by Ruth Harriet Louise, Clara Bow by Nicholas Murray and Eugene Richie stand out, but there are many. The images are exceptional, taken by some of the greatest artists of the camera and the volume layout does the images justice. All complemented with reminiscences from the stars and photographers themselves. The very best history, anecdotal, with many perspectives and implications explored, and written with love.

This book has touched a deep chord sensitive to vanished beauty. The stars are now just names, some of them not even that. And of course they were not the same as their carefully crafted images displayed in this book. These evoke not only the stars themselves but the fact that they brought hope to many who perhaps would have found it otherwise hard to deal with the Depression - all those hopes, fears, ambitions, petty, grand and mean, silly and endearing. Only the images of beauty remain!

First edition copy. This book is oversized and OUTSTANDING!

291 pages of glamour. 1925 - 1940 is the tops in Hollywood glamour. Though the 40s weren't bad either.

These are some magnificent photoplates. Superbly printed in this volume. Even the pickiest at quality (like me) will be happy. Amazing images not shown in ohter books. The Kobal colection is vast and bar none the best. This is a wonderful selection from him, that he put together in this book.

This book is very good for the basic concept and understanding of N.C. Estate rules and terms. You may wish to buy an real estate math book as well. If you study this book you should have a thorough understanding of North Carolina Real Estate. Another good book is Modern Real Estate Practice In North Carolina by Fillmore W. Galaty, Wellington J. Allaway,and Robert C. Kyle.
