I don't know one thing about architecture or homebuilding, but I enjoyed this book for its striking photos of awesome homes.
If you prefer a more minimalist approach I'd suggest: "The Timber-Frame Home, Design, Construction, Finishing" by the same author. In that book this author wrote: "...frame design should simplify and reduce whenever possible, The best frames are those with the most economical use of timbers and the least-complicated joinery." I was disappointed that this book ignored that concept.
Most of the houses in this book are above 3500 sq feet with roughly a third at 5000 and up. If you want to see the extremes to which timberframing can be taken, this is the book for you.

It is exactly what it claims to be: a look into the hearts and minds of some manga and anime creators. For those looking for reviews and summaries of their favorite manga and anime series, look elsewhere. The interviews are about the creators, not their characters and storylines.
Unfortunately,
is not, by any means, an impartial cross section. The interviews focus almost exclusively upon the genre popular in the United States. Shoujo manga is completely neglected except for a token interview with Nanase Ohkawa of CLAMP at the end of the volume.
Still, it is enjoyable book.

But, the book isn't what I hoped. Although it does say "Interviews." I liked it enough to not sell it, I got to see into the minds of my fave manga artists! A must if your for the interviews, but it isn't a review of any series.

A great yarn from a legendary reporter........2000-02-26
Drummond, a reporter with CBS-owned Channel 2 in Chicago for many years, is best known for covering the "Outfit" in Chicago. As any Chicagoan can attest, he also covered many characters and other crooks, besides the big fish that hogged the headlines. Although there is a chapter on Tony "Big Tuna" Accardo, Drummond wisely focuses on the little guys that many of us forgot. This is a smart choice, for much is already written about the big guys like Accardo and if Drummond wanted to cover them right, he would of had to have written a separate book on several people. The only thing missing in the book is more on Drummond himself, for if you are a personal friend of his, as I am, you know that he is more interesting than any of the crooks and capers he ever covered. Read this book and try to learn as much as you can about John Drummond - a living Chicago legend and a journalism institution!

This unique volume presents the results of a study of 200 German families over a period of 16 years from 1976 to 1992. This study--the findings of which yield a host of new insights into the dynamics of cross-generational personality and family development--is based on an ecopsychological framework comprising four levels of developmental analyses:

The authors focus on the important ideas and keep methodological details to a minimum in the text. Technical issues having to do with data analysis, etc., are discussed in an appendix.

This is a nice scholarly review of the conquest of Africa. This book is more for the college student studying this event than the lay reader. Professor Vandervort breaks down the European conquest of Africa into three phases: 1.) Shifting Balance 1830-80 2.) Flood Tide 1880-98 and 3.) Ominous Portents 1898-1914. In this book, Vandervort makes the case that Africans did resist and European conquest was not a cake walk. In fact, the Italians were turned back at Adowa. Other Europeans were defeated in battles. There was resistance to the European Scramble for Africa.
As I already mentioned, this is a scholarly work. However, for those interested in Africa, this is interesting history. One will understand why Africa was colonized by the Europeans. This is an interesting history book.
Colonial Warfare in Africa.......2002-04-06
Bruce Vandervort's aim in writing this book is to examine the origins and conduct of colonial warfare in Africa in the late nineteenth century. The author investigates the history of the colonial conquests from the perspectives of the European invaders and the African resisters. Over the course of the book, he demonstrates the impact, both immediate and long-term, of these wars upon the societies, political structures and military theory and practice of both the victors and vanquished.
Vandervort describes how relations between black Africans and Europeans were carried on largely at arm's length until the 1850's. He informs us that the interior of Africa was still mainly in the hands of the African peoples, whose hostility, combined with rigors of tropical diseases, kept European penetration to a minimum. He explains that Europeans came to Africa largely for economic reasons, thus, their presence on the continent was limited to a small number of trading enclaves along the west and east African coasts.
According to Vandervort, in 1876 more than 90% of the African continent was ruled by Africans. However, by 1914, all but Liberia and Ethiopia were controlled by European powers. The author explains that the ability of the Europeans to recruit large armies of African troops and the technology advantage that European countries had over African countries were the major reasons for European success in the African colonial wars. The motives for participation in the imperial venture were multiple and complex and they varied considerably among European nations.
Vandervort describes the pre-colonial years of the nineteenth century as a time of movement toward a greater centralization of power. In larger polities such as the Zulu empire in Southern Africa, the jihad states of al-Hajj Umar, Ahmadu Seku and Samori in West Africa, the Mahdist theocratic state in the Sudan, the rejuvenated Solomonic empire of Ethiopia, the Sokoto empire of northern Nigeria, and the Ashanti empire of present-day Ghana, an internally-generated change might have opened up a distinctly African path to modernity. Given the opportunity, African nations might have eventually liberalized their political, legal and fiscal institutions to make room for their more productive classes. These classes could then have commercially collaborated with the European mercantilists. If this had occurred, African nations might have retained their political and economic independence through an open door policy of trading with the world.
This process was brought to a halt as a result of two factors: first, through conquest and subsequent imperial rule, the Europeans were able to impose their own economic and political priorities onto African institutions and society conquest. Secondly, African societies were almost entirely unable to bury long-standing ethnic and political animosities long enough to forge alliances against the Europeans. Vandervort reveals in great detail the African nations' unwillingness to rethink military strategies and tactics that had proven ineffective against European methods of warfare. He shows how their refusal to abandon hierarchical and inequitable social structures inhibited the African peoples from presenting a united front against the European invasion. Europeans were able to turn ethnic groups and religious factions against each other. Ethnic divisions, tribal rivalries, religious differences and conflicts between regions all played into the hands of the Europeans.
In conclusion, the author has written a thorough and well-documented book and is able to discuss both the European and African perspectives without bias. Additionally, the military aspects of the wars are clearly explained. The social, economic and political background is illustrated to provide the reader with a greater understanding of European imperialism in Africa and the effects it still has on the Continent. Therefore, this book is a must for those readers who want to better understand the confluence of factors that led to the success of the European conquest of Africa.
Not a cornerstone.......2001-07-21
A good addition to any period readers collection, but not something you'd tell your friends; "You've gotta read this!". The authors goal was to examine origins and conduct of colonial warfare in Africa in the late nineteenth century. In so much as possible from the perspectives both of the European invaders and the African resisters. As well as both immediate and long-term affects of these wars upon the societies, political sturctures and military theory and practice of both victors and vanquished.
The author clearly stuggles with the sheer grandiose nature of the task. Often glossing over key events and toiling over insignificants. The language of the text is laborious, making the reading all the more dulling.
Despite the seemingly harsh words, I still did read the book from beginning to end, not missing a word. The clever angles the author uses on occasion and the "I'm not sure if I really like this, but it seems interesting", new school of Military History interpretation. A good brick in the wall, but not a cornerstone.

With all of the attention Mies van der Rohe has received over the last few years, it's hard to believe that there could be a pair of "undiscovered" buildings begging for even the slightest consideration and receiving none. Such has been the fate, however, of Mies's Krefeld Villas, a pair of neighboring brick residences of typically restrained elegance built from 1927 to 1930. Their anonymity is, to some degree, Mies's own doing; in 1959, in his only public comment about the projects, he quipped that he would have preferred to use more glass, but the clients objected. "I had great trouble," he said.
As historians Kent Kleinman and Leslie van Duzer show in this carefully researched, eminently readable study, sometimes it's best not to take the architect at his word. Here they guide us through the two villas, which were converted into a joined museum of contemporary art after World War II. Each chapter begins with a study of an artist who has created a site-specific installation within the villas. By analyzing how Yves Klein, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, and Ernst Caramelle chose to engage Mies's architecture, they arrive at a truly original understanding of these two forgotten masterworks.

I really like this book because it is teaching you how to paint impressionist style.
It shows how you can any photo turn in to masterpiece of your own and not how to make a copy.
Yes, It's not step by step how to book for absolute beginners and those who want an instant results without working on it...like painting by numbers. You have to know your colors and how to hold a brush and what are you doing on the canvas.. There are no miracles, you have to work on your painting to be good and practice a lot. Wihout no masterpice...:-)
I will recomend this book for people who ready to do that..
Not really a "how to" book.......2004-05-04
I was disappointed that a book whose subtitle is "How to Master Impressionism -- Step-by-Step" didn't have much down-and-dirty how-to advice. There's never a definitive "This is realistic landscape painting, and this over here is impressionism" juxtaposition to explain exactly HOW impressionism might differ from traditional or realistic landscapes. Not sure about the "contemporary realism" review, since I'm not familiar with that as a specific term, but I'd have to agree that some sort of modifier on the "impressionism" label might be appropriate here.
There are a great many paintings by Whisson showcased, and most are quite nice, with a few even breathtaking. Most are done on a very small scale, the 10x12" range.
What few step-by-step demos, or even partial demos, there are are rather pale. Many "compositional plan" examples are merely ghosted-back visuals of the finished painting with a grid superimposed and little explanation as to composition or positioning choices. Most "tonal plans" (value sketches) are just b&w photos (badly screened, imho, so you can't see the patterns well) of the finished painting. Some of the all-the-way demos seem to be done after the fact, as in he started with a finished painting he wanted to demonstrate, and then did another one, this one being photographed as he did it. The results don't match. We are rarely told the why behind choices made.
The use of color is almost ignored entirely.
He does stress sketching, which is great! But if he were to redo this book, I'd advise him to do actual demos, explaining all the way as to his specific reasons for doing everything, and how this demonstrates impressionism. He should go into composition, into value determination, and most especially, into color.
The value of this book is the many Whisson paintings showcased and the inspiration derived from same. For "how to" value, I would recommend trying to find another book.
Sound Advice for Aspiring Painters.......2003-01-13
The visual demonstrations are certainly helpful but Colley's
techniques are not fast tricks and gimmicks.
He emphasizes the importance of good draftsmanship (drawing)
in his art. A whole section is devoted to showing the
relationship between preliminary sketches/drawings and the
finished painting in his work as well as in the work of
Monet and other Impressionists.
He encourages the reader to practice drawing as much as
possible in order to grow as a painter.
I admire Whisson's compositional skills, taste, and artistic
integrity.
Wonderful En Plein Air Painting.......2002-08-14
If you are looking for techniques to learn how to paint en plein air, this book is a valuable find. Colley is able to capture the envelope of light that Monet and others sought by employing his bravado brushwork and traditional training. The photos of his paintings draw you in. One can actually feel the raking sun and smell the fresh air. However, Colley's technique is NOT Impressionism, it is Contemporary Realism. Impressionism is about learning to see color, color that other people cannot see unless they are trained to see it. It is known as full-color seeing (check out the books by Lois Griffel and Susan Sarback to learn how to see color). Colley's emphasis is more on value than color. Also, he uses large brushstrokes and completes his paintings in one session (or almost). Most of the French Impressionists worked on their paintings many, many sessions, building up thick layers of paint (Renoir was an exception to this in his iridescent period; he used thin transparent color juxtaposed with thick opaque dabs). I am not saying that one has to place little touches of color all over the place to be an Impressionist nor does one have to work on a painting more than one session. There is a great deal of freedom to develop one's own style. I am just saying that the emphasis in true Impressionism is on "observed" color. Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished artist, I am sure that you will love everything this book has to offer. Colley is a brilliant painter!
Excellent Impressionistic Instructions for A Beginner.......2002-05-16
Due to the author's great and simple instructions and step-by-step demonstrations, I was able to come out with two Impressionistic paintings from reading this book. For someone who is impatient, the author has kept in mind to keep the instructions more visual than verbal. I recommend this book immensely to other oil painting beginners who wish to make their own French Impressionist masterpieces. I hope Whisson will delve into other styles of oil painting because he has a winner in this book.

This is one of the best books on stereo photography (3D pictures) although all stereo photography books are good, if you can find them. This book covers the Realist camera and related photography products in detail. The realist 35 mm film camera (although 50 years old) is still a top stereo camera, and this is a great book that tells you all about the camera and stereo photography. If you are interested in 3D photography the Realist camera ($100.00 on ebay) and this book are the ones to get. We all will be going digital in the future, but this is a cost effective (35mm film) way to get into 3D.

This is a collection of papers and notes on the repair of the stereo camera know as the "Realist". The camera first came out in the 40's and was built to last. If you find one it will still be in working condition, that has been my experience. I have 4. Edward's notes give details on how to take the camera apart and clean and do minor repairs. You may still be able to get a copy of this book even though it may be our of print by doing a web search on Edward Romney, or camera repair manuals. Edward put together notes on many camera repairs and I found the web site that still sells them. I bought my copy in 2004.

I really enjoyed how this book showed the other side to F. Scott Fitzgerald. I thought the view was a bit biased because of the fact that Sheilah Graham had been so close to Fitzgerald. Some of the stories may have been tainted because the perspective came from her. But overall, it was an interesting book that I enjoyed.
