Itty bitty pictures.......2003-04-05

Loretta wishes you "good luck" at the outset and you'll certainly need it. The photos are too tiny to distinguish any detail. I recommend that this book go back to the publisher to have the wire shown in its actual size. Pare down the explanations because bigger pictures could show more. In its current state, the book is fairly useless to learn wire wrapping techniques.

really elementary. good for school children, perhaps.......1999-02-16

this book only uses one form of braiding, and spends pages explaining how to do it -- the same braids we all learned as children, for pigtails. Then the patterns are gussied up with beads but there's nothing here the rankest beginner wouldn't invent for onesself -- nothing new. A pity.

Presented in mainly in diptychs and triptychs of precisely uniform dimension, every picture here features essentially the same subject-a large window in the artist's home with a view overlooking her yard. Some images focus on the view through the window: into the yard, at a tree, or off into the distance. Others are focused on the window itself or some component thereof: rain streaks, fingerprints, dust. Still others reflect the interior of the space. The sum effect is one of displacement-of the artist/viewer relationship, of the senses, and of subjectivity itself.

Uta Barth's Genius of the Unconscious.......2000-03-26

This book is the first of three in a series (the second, 'and of time...' recently published with the J. Paul Getty Museuem in Los Angeles). Barth's subject is the obviousness of the unconscious. By creating photographs of objects that are - for her, at least, banal - she creates a context in which one might find a more meaningful level of discourse about the subject. In these photographs of windows in her home (and their views) she produces a series that presses the viewer to reconsider the very nature of a 'portal'. That the photographs are very beautiful in themselves only furthers the impression of a dream-state. Within them one reconsiders one's own conscious reaction in light of hers, thus bridging - emotionally - a path to unconscious perception. Jan Tumlir's essay provides the context for the work in a clear, concise prose, reminding the reader of Barth's philosophical importance, as well as her artistic value. A highly recommended book by one of the most innovative artists working today.

My wife says this book is my biography!.......2000-01-07

It's simply hilarious! Things like a couple walking down the street and they pass a blind homeless man begging for money, the man of the couple looks over at his companion after they pass and he jealously says "Don't try to deny it, I saw you give him the eye!" This one is captioned "They're Jealous." Another good one is of a husband who is so sure with himself in trying to remember everything his wife likes for the special occasion they are celebrating, he comments "Surprise Sarah Darling, I remembered all your favorites. Your favorite meal, your favorite wine, your favorite desert, even your favorite flowers. I haven't forgotten a thing". Then she disappointedly says, "My name is Rose". That one is titled "They forget the 'little things'". This one is great, a woman is lost and she stops to ask a man, who looks to be in his 30s, for directions, he graciously says "You go straight ahead for one, maybe six miles, turn left at a big red (or is it green?) house. Drive until you reach a house with a dog out front, if the dog is a scottie, you've gone too far..." This one is labeled "They give terrible directions". The whole book is filled with these and EVERY SINGLE ONE HAS TRUTH TO IT! "They let things grow on their curtains". You have to see this one! "They give you practicle gifts". "They want sex too often". "They don't want sex often enough". It's simply hilarious!

Easy, life enriching book for children AND adults!.......2003-04-02

Wow, this is just an awesome book for any parent, grandparent, caregiver, teacher... It was an "impulse buy" and turned out to be the best child activity book I have ever seen. As a former professional, college educated stay-at-home mom, I wanted to move beyond "Candyland" and "Go Fish" and have more fun with my kids. This book provides a wealth of information that makes having fun with them a lot of fun for me!

There are 14 chapters, after the introduction. Each CHAPTER provides a background on the topic, helpful information, many ideas and projects to try, sidebars with even more information and ideass, and a very extensive "resources" section with additional books, websites, relevant games, music and more. Chapters include Instant Fun, Playing around with Photography, Mind Snacks: Recipes for Kitchen Learning, The Junior Geographer, celebrate the Senses, and so on. The book provides a very well rounded experience without being "preachy". It isn't a "learning book" and doesn't teach skills, so to speak, but a child can't help but learn and grow from the activities listed. Most activities are free or require a very small investment.

Each chapter is a treasure. For example, the first chapter, Instant Fun, makes waiting with kids actually fun. There are 30 "instant games" (for example, picking out someone walking by or a fellow patient in a waiting room and making up a creative story about them, turning your hand into a puppet with instructions, things to do while waiting for a meal in a restaurant, etc.), five different ways to keep busy while travelling, 13 different quick pencil games (such as one of you draws a squiggle and then you and your child take turns completing it into a picture, dot games, a game called "scrambled sentences, etc.). There are 4 sidebars in this chapter with even more ideas for instant fun. And finally, there are 13 references for more information, books, catalogs, games, etc. Each idea or game is at least a paragraph long--it isn't simply a list of run of the mill ideas. For my family, this chapter alone is well worth the price of the book.

And each following chapter is just as chock-full of information, ideas and projects. A previous reviewer stated it was a good book to get out of a rut and I couldn't agree more. The back cover shows a review from Working Mother magazine that states, "The beauty of this guide is that most games call for nothing more than two people and two brains." I couldn't agree more.

Great ideas to stimulate you and your children.......2001-06-07

PLAYING SMART is a treasure trove of clever ideas. Using the simple and familiar, Susan K. Perry shows us how we can turn the most ordinary experiences into opportunities for creativity, learning, and fun, teaching children to begin a lifelong love of education and imagination. A walk becomes an adventure into biology and nature as well as a chance to make up stories about people, to notice change in daily surroundings. The backyard is filled with learning how to grow edible and decorative plants with an aesthetic appreciation of their variety and arrangement, along with respect for other living creatures. Cooking with your children, you can both learn about nutrition, health, and safety, fostering good habits that will serve them well in our fast food and junk food culture. Waiting in line and long car rides become openings for psychological sharing and excursions into the imagination.

Nearly all of the ideas in this book can be used by adults to stimulate their own creativity and get out of their daily ruts. I especially appreciated the sections of doing dreamwork and personal journaling with children. I frequently recommend this book to parents and teachers.

Looking for the correct filter to use with your film? Looking for information on a particular type of film? You'll find it here in the "Kodak Photoguide, 4th Edition". The book is small in size, but it is packed with information that easily fits into your camera bag.

You know all those little notes you make for yourself for determing what f-stop should be used during a specific lighting situation, or the film box your carry around with the films information? Well, assuming you're using Kodak film, it's all in there.

This is a great little book and well worth the price.

A useful little reference.......2002-04-13

While not comprehensive and tied to Kodak's product line, this photoguide is quite handy and compact. My favorite features are the wheels and other such devices that make the reference data much more accessible.

A necessary item for your camera bag!.......1998-07-29

The Kodak Pocket Photoguide is chocked full of information for the serious photographer. If your light meter goes on the fritz, you can use the Pocket Photoguide to find the correct exposure for most Kodak film.

This book represents a major critique of the way Malthusian thinking has influenced capitalist development policy in the modern period, as well as in the past. Taking an historical and comparative view, it highlights the strategic role of Malthusian ideas in the defence of capitalist political economy when confronted by struggles for equality and human progress.

The leading historical example the author takes offers a major reassessment of the origins of the Irish Famine. His contemporary case study focuses on the Green Revolution, which the author analyses in terms of a broad Western strategy of capitalist agricultural development in the face of peasant insurgency. He examines how Malthusian arguments portrayed agricultural modernization as a humanitarian attempt to forestall a food crisis in the developing world when, in reality, he argues the agenda was to defer land reform and bolster existing rural class structures. Finally, the book examines how the political economy of underdevelopment is currently being obscured by alarm over the environmental impact of over-population, and how such Malthusian concerns represent the poor, not as victims of capitalist development, but as perpetrators of environmental destruction.

An important rethinking of Malthus.......2004-02-14

Ross' analysis of Cold War uses of Malthusian dogma is succinct and brings a fresh and consistent analysis to, "the increasing subordination of demographic thinking to the Cold War." Ross examines the uses of the United States' Cold War policy directives which represented the underdeveloped world's demographic state (literally) as a "population bomb" needing to be defused by technicians from the North before its detonation shattered the global economic order. Further, Ross contextualizes Hardin's just-so-story of the Tragedy of the Commons as a Cold War parable passed on as empirical fact, a parable that teaches us that only private property, and an unequal distribution of resources can lead to social harmony.

The Malthus Factor is packed with detailed examples of how wide-ranging Malthus' impact on society has been, from discussions of the connections between the Green Revolution's fertilizer requirements and linkages between munitions industries and fertilizer industries, to links between the rise of the American Eugenics movement and the historical demise of American midwifery, to the roles of the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations in funding the Eugenics movement. Even readers who disagrees with Ross' theoretical approach to Malthus will learn something of value from his analysis. I expect that this book will soon become required reading for any graduate student studying for exams covering both demographic theory and political economy.

This is really a needed resource for every toddler parent who wants to create fun for her or his child in any possible setting in different ways.

I found that a lot of the activities were variations of things I did actively and Nancy Kelly's ideas and specific suggestions will increase my effectiveness.

Some of the especially cleaveer and useful include the Origami, Milk Viola and with my son who loves tossing and sorting and categorizing will love the increased intentionality with this book.

Being a stay-at-home mom can get pretty challeging. Can anyone else recite Goodnight Moon in their sleep? I thought this book was very inventive and most of all fun. It gave practical ideas for lots of activities for toddlers to enjoy in different areas of the house. Anyone with small children will enjoy and benefit from this book. I highly recommend it.

Many fun activities.......2001-06-25

The book is broken down into 5 sections of the house, each with varying activities to do with your toddler in that area of the house. The activities are easy to follow, fun, and each one contains a MATERIALS list to describe what is needed for that activity. Most activities can be set up in 10 minutes or less. Even though some of the activities I had already known about, this book gave me variations on many of those, and many more that sounded fun and easy to set up. You can tell just by looking at the cover how much fun it is going to be!
