second-hand art lore isn't worth the read.......1997-06-11

This removed and often second-hand journal of the 1950s School of New York is a mostly dry read whose uncommon interesting whirls really resolve themselves like a flaky TV episode of Chuck Norris. Too often, these complex characters are conceived by the author as stereotypes of American fairytaledom. Their frailties are not well-enough addressed and sparsely dotted among habitual drone and American folk imagery. Elaine deKooning, Lee Krasner, and other groundbreaking artists of the time such as Frankenthaler and Hopper, who may not represent the core of the Expressionist flame, but nevertheless burned bright have been neglected alongside other surrounding artistic circumstances. Besides these prominent shortcomings, the author is also lacking in bravery of prose. This is not an exciting read, but it is adequate in that it does not defeat itself while getting across the vital struggle for serious contemplation of American Art in the 1950s. Certainly not a "turning point" in literature, it provides facts and lore in a predictable and easily understood manner

Medical Photography ý techniques and equipment.......2001-05-25

Sections on patient photo-techniques, type of camera and flash equipment are very well detailed, are excellent and very well illustrated. However, chapter on digital photography was poor and not consistent with the quality of the information found in the rest of the book. In summary, this is a very good resource for interns/residents/fellows, medical photo technicians and physicians in practice.

What a terrific compilation. Great writing, great stories. Moving, touching, teaching stories. Thank you to these authors who shared their lives, their thoughts and feelings.

Only thing I didn't like is the title. Can't believe they couldn't come up with a better one to capture the essence of this book, these people's stories.

Love or hate your in-laws, doesn't matter- this book is for you.

Even if you don't have in-laws...BUY THIS BOOK!.......2006-01-07

I picked up this anthology yesterday and I was unable to stop until Tom Junod's last sentence. Those final words "...of becoming something like her son" read a little smeary because I was crying, for the tenth or eleventh time, not even stopping to wipe the tears away. I can't begin to tell you how captivating, moving, illuminating--all those blurb words that seem so inadequate-this book was. I felt as if I had been invited to a dinner party where the host suggested a parlor game that at first seems frivolous, but as each guest tells their story, grows increasingly poignant, serious and epic. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. Rachel Robinson describes in detail the abuse she went through and it grips your soul from the very first chapter. I found myself wanting to rescue the little girl. How can a mother be so cruel to her own child? This book has no dull moments. I read it in one sitting because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Without my mother's love has made my list of Great Books.

Simpson actually covers only the history and present circumstances of the French Foreign Legion's one remaining parachute regiment, the Second. Based in Corsica, its 1,300 officers and men virtually constitute a miniature, highly mobile, elite army, able to conduct both regular and irregular warfare anywhere in the world. Their history, which constitutes the lesser part of the book, includes battles as well known as Dien Bien Phu and as little known as some interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. Their present condition is unique even within the unique military institution that is the French Foreign Legion, and their officers and men show a range of skills, motivations, ethnic origins, and plans for the future that are in the classic legion mold. Simpson writes favorably but not uncritically of his subject, always with great clarity, sometimes with wit. His conclusion, that the Second Legion Parachute Regiment is a possible prototype for future international rapid deployment forces, is worthy of consideration.

Survey of 2REP.......2006-11-07

I enjoyed reading Mr. Simpson's book. It's a survey of 2REP with a bit of history of the disgraced and disbanded 1REP. To tell the story of FFL's parachutists, he included some history from the disastrous drop into Dien Bien Phu in the border region between Laos and Viet Nam. 2REP is not a typical FFL regiment and Mr. Simpson does a great job explaining what they do and how they do it (with emphasis on Low Intensity Conflicts).

If you want a novel built around legionnaires or an "I was there" account, this is not the book for you. Mr. Simpson doesn't say it is.

The book gets five stars from me because it covers what it says it's covering with elegance and a sense of insight without sensationalism that is lacking in many similar military accounts.

The only thing left to do is to get Mr. Simpson to go through the jungle training school in Guiana and write about it.

I was not at all entertained by this book. I have read several books on the French Foreign Legion and this one was probably the most boring; in fact, it was text-book-boring. I tried reading it and just could not endure it beyond the first 100 pages. It may have historical detail as mentioned in other reviews, but it is certainly very dry and has no exciting moments or narrative. Sort of like telling war stories while on elephant tranquilizers.

This is a good book. I think it's best for those who are more interested in military history in general. I expected something else but that's my fault for not reading the description. This book gives and accurate account of history as well as interviews with legionaires AND personal thoughts. I recommend this book for those intersted in history. Not for those interested in joining.

A look inside a lifestyle of adventure and tradition........1999-03-28

This book, having bought and read it about 18 months ago, finds me now - 31 March 1999 in Metz, France - about to follow in the path of those men written about by the author. Its descriptive narrative combined with historic facts and personal stories of the various men, convinced me after many years of self doubt that this, The French Foreign Legion, is the lifestyle and destiny I seek for myself! It makes for easy reading, that is hard to put down till the end.

Anyone who thinks all the vertebrates of this world have been discovered and described should think again. This book chronicles the work of ornithologists in the mountains and jungles of Peru and elsewhere in South America as they hunt for new and often exotic bird species. Focusing mainly on the work of LSU ornithologists and in particular the accomplished John O'Neill, it provides a first hand view of such expeditions, describes many of the new birds species found, shows how ornithologists work (it's not just bird-watching either), and provides interesting discussions on issues relating to taxonomy, scientific credibility, collecting specimens, conservation, neotropical ecology, evolution, and even South American politics. I highly recommend it.

An unprecedented collaboration between the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago resulted in the architectural project Between the Museum and the City: Garofalo Architects.

Chicago-based architect Douglas Garofalo, a significant emerging talent, was commissioned to design and construct a temporary architectural space that would enliven the museum's plaza, making it a bridge between the museum and the city of Chicago.

The final design emerged after an unusually diverse group of people had participated in small sessions and public forums. Cultural theorists, museum workers, educators, urban planners, engineers, city officials, college and high school students, artists, and sponsors all contributed to the design, execution, and documentation.

The temporary nature of Garofalo's project and the low budget available encouraged experimentation with forms and materials. The result is a unique, abstract architectural form, which crawls down the stairs of the barren museum facade and sprawls across the otherwise uninhabited plaza, offering seating and space for public uses.

The exhibition, which ran from May 31 to October 12, 2003, featured both the new structure and documentation of its conceptual underpinnings and the entire working process: drawings, sketches, 3D models, computer animations. During its summer months in the plaza, the structure was a gathering place for programs and performances, a weekly farmers' market, and nighttime dinner parties, and it offered a seat of respite for bicycle messengers, museum visitors, and tourists.

Between the City and the Museum preserves this architecturally and programmatically innovative project in book form, abundantly illustrated. An essay by Douglas Garofalo describes the conceptual thinking, site analysis, and collaborative strategies employed by Garofalo Architects, as well as the physical elements of this dynamic experimental structure.

This is a book you can hear........1999-12-13

This is a book you can hear...the interviews with people who live in western North Carolina are so well done that as you read you can hear the people speaking. This book covers many topics from farming to history. A good cross section of people gives the reader the opportunity to read different opinions on the varied topics. The book is filled with excellent photograhs. Especially interesting are photographs of most of the people interviewed in the book. Putting faces with the 'voices' is a real treat! The reader gets a good overview of the history of the area and insights into often ignored aspects of the culture of this georgous part of the US. This book is a good research tool for anyone learning about the area and it is entertaining reading as well. I love it!

The CSA Roams the High Seas.......2001-06-12

In this short book, Robinson does a fantastic job of telling the story of the CSS Alabama: the globetrotting privateer of the Confederacy that attacked U.S. shipping interests from Canada to France to Brazil to China. In a very readable style, he gives an overview of how the South chartered privateers and how the North reacted before delving into the construction and history of the Alabama. He also does a good analysis of the actual impact the ship and its comrades had on U.S. shipping interests around the world. All in all, a top-rate look at one of the most infamous ships of the Civil War.
