The German art movement.......2006-09-06

This book feels a littel dated and really doesnt hold up very well. I never really understood the movement till chapter 11 in this book. Starting at chapter 12, thru the end i was able to gather what was being explained but not at a good pace. The structure of the text and the photos used are not that strong.

Not for Gifted Children at All.......2002-11-06

James Reed Campbell takes the term "gifted" and applies it to the characteristics of high achieving students. Although Campbell's repeated point throughout the book is communication between parents, children, and teachers is useful, he ignores the characteristics and academic and emotional needs of gifted children. He recommends strategies to parents that will inevitably set students up for debilitating perfectionism, disappointment, and failure - as he recommends the parents setting their children's life goals and directing their children to reach them. He recommends pressuring children into achieving these goals and doesn't take into account circumstances under which gifted children do not achieve to their potential. Campbell considers giftedness a condition that can be reached through hard work as opposed to it being a natural ability. As a school district gifted specialist, this would not ever be a book I would recommend to parents of gifted children.

Not Just for Parents of "Gifted" Children.......2001-08-02

This book should be required reading for all parents. Although children are born with inherently different talents, this book teaches you how to work with and maximize your child's potential. There are wonderful summaries of each chapters and concrete suggestions to enrich your child's education--things that don't take a lot of time, just persistent effort on a DAILY basis. Anyone can do it. I have the most important pages copied and posted on my refrigerator at home and in my briefcase at work so that I can review. Rather than a book to be borrowed from the library to read once, this book is one that I review on an annual basis just before the start of the school year. Buy your copy today. You won't be disappointed. The things in this book are best applied after reading Mary Sheedy Kurchinka's Raising Your Spirited Child so that you understand how your child's personality affects learning and behavior.

Prison Experience Finally Studied.......2001-05-02

After years of focusing solely on soldier experiences of battle, historians have finally begun to examine other important aspects of the war. Of these, the prison experience has been ignored--or generalized--for far too long. Books like *Rebels at Rock Island* are important to a fuller understanding of the war and the less romanticized suffering of POWs. This and *Unlikely Allies: Fort Delaware's Prison Community in the Civil War* are excellent studies of single Northern prisons.

For an enthralling and personalized examination of one regiment's experiences in Southern prisons, look at *A Perfect Picture of Hell: Eyewitness Accounts by Civil War Prisoners from the 12th Iowa.* As a guidebook to prisons on both sides, Lonnie Speer's *Portals to Hell* is another valuable tool. McAdams joins a growing body of important Civil War prison literature. I recommend all of these books highly.

Rebels at Rock Island: The Story of a Civil War Prison.......2001-01-14

REBELS AT ROCK ISLAND is a lesson in history that has not been told in depth until Benton McAdams put into words the events that took place 136 years earlier. I live near and work in Rock Island and visit the Rock Island Arsenal often. Until I read Rebels at Rock Island, I was not aware of the details of this Civil War chapter in history that seemed to be so remote and now so close. The Confederate Cemetary maintained by the Department of Veterans Affairs on the Rock Island Arsenal has always been of interest to the locals in and around the City of Rock Island. We have not had a resource to know the details of this historical landmark where 1800 Rebels are buried until Mr. McAdams pulled the documents from various sources together in a factual, yet easy-to-read book. Today this Confederate Cemetary is treated with a high level of reverence and respect to the men who took up the cause of the Confederate Flag. Prior to this book, which has given us the chilling and depressing details of the prisoner's ordeal and the extreme difficulties associated with managing a prison camp on the island, no one could artilculate the past with the present day Rock Island Arsenal. Mr. McAdams has relied on documents from various sources; one being the Rock Island Argus newspaper. The editor of the paper during the existance of the prison camp was very critical of the management of the prison. I have been able to retrieve copies of the Argus newspaper from the City of Rock Island Library which maintains much historical material available to those who may wish to read from this newspaper published during that period of time. This is a book which has interest for all who desire to learn more about the in-depth, factual events associated with a northern prison camp of the Civil War. I highly recommend the book, REBELS AT ROCK ISLAND: THE STORY OF A CIVIL WAR PRISON.

Excellent insights to the Civil War Prison system.......2000-12-26

Benton McAdams does an excellent job of portraying the Civil War prison system, especially the North, in a very objective manner. His research is in-depth and is assembled in way to make the reading informative and interesting in a Shelby Foote sort of way. Mr. McAdams follows the birth, life and death of the Federal Prison at Rock Island, Illinois along the banks of the Mississippi River. This book is a must for any Civil War historian, both professional and amateur, as it hits upon topics not covered anywhere else to this level. The research includes letters, diaries, newspaper articles and Federal documents which are put together to allow the reader the feel for the day-to-day existance in the prison and surrounding area. A superior read that I liked and highly recommend.

From Sluys in 1340 and Lepanto in 1571, this author traces all the world's greatest naval encounters right through to the Battle of Midway.

Expertly researched and extremely well presented, it is quite clear that this author has spent considerable time in research on at least three fronts. Firstly, we have the narrative of these historic encounters put together in an easy-to-read style that brings much satisfaction to the reader. Secondly, we have a first rate selection of photographs to support those actions that took place after photography had been invented. Thirdly, and perhaps most impressively, the author has gone to great lengths to track down some of the world's greatest paintings in addition to cartoons and maps showing the various deployments for each of the subject battles.

Altogether, Mr Ortzen has produced a book of great quality here and it is difficult to see how any reader could be disappointed with the content.

overall a poor attempt devotes way too much space to Caracas, as most travellers I've met here get out of there as quickly as possible. Just not enough information about important areas especially the north east of the country. Not recommended.

Disappointing, for a Lonely Planet.......2007-01-04

I have been using Lonely Planet guides for years. However, I was surprisingly disappointed with this guide for Venezuela. To me, both writers seem so enamored with the country that they could have been writing for the national tourism office. Much of the info is out of date, and important details -- for example, about less-traveled bus routes, or warnings about dangerous neighborhoods -- were missing entirely. For this country, I would recommend that you consider another guidebook, preferably one which has been written more recently. (Note to Lonely Planet: consider updating your guide books more often for countries that are in as much transition as VZ).

Practical & helpful, but flawed.......2006-09-16

I've used Lonely Planet (LP) guides in several nations now, and each time the LP guide has proven highly readable and practical, but never flawless. This Venezuela guide seems to have a few more flaws and omissions than expected. True, the book has that wealth of practical information on budget hotels, restuarants, night life, busses, the metro, travel tips, etc., plus some decent maps, and it captures the nation's lively character. But a couple city maps omit vital parts of town, prices are occasionally off mark, and the book omits words on dangers to pedestrians from speeding drivers or the congestion in Caracas. The author's exalted view of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas left me puzzled, and travelers should understand that at this writing free speech seems questionable under the rule of left-leaning President Hugo Chavez.

One wonders if LP authors occasionally fail to complete their homework and merely reprint old information. This LP guide is useful but needs a few corrections, and travelers that speak a little Spanish might be advised to call ahead.

Take Venezuela w/ a grain of salt.......2006-07-09

We took two guides with us to Venezuela during our July 2006 trip. One was Fodor's, one was Lonely Planet. Both were valueable for their insights into culture and customs, but only Lonely Planet offered practical information such as names and phone numbers for hotels and attractions. That said, much of the information was outdated or deceptive. For instance, food and taxi service in Venezuela is very expensive! (not the $5 a meal lonely planet represents). Caracas is not set up for tourists and many of the areas are unsafe to travel without a local guide. Also, finding an offical place to change money can be challenging, I recommend using taxi drivers who are readily available. Good luck! You may need it.

What a joke!.......2001-04-03

We normally swear by Lonely Planet guides (to southern Africa, Central America, SE Asia), but this one to Venezuela is far and away the most inadequate: Sometimes I wondered if the author had even set foot in the country, or if he just called up his buddies who in turn passed along 2nd-hand information. For starters, many of his write-ups are meant for people traveling in private cars; this is by no means a "back-packer's" guide. Sometimes, for example, we'd be interested in a particular place the author described, only to be disappointed that the place was accessible only by private vehicle or you could walk to it but had to cross 6-lane highways (quite common in Caracas). Furthermore, this guidebook provides nothing that other guidebooks on the country provide: in sum, Lonely Planet Venezuela rides on the otherwise strong LP reputation; it's of no merit and could actually be the source of a lot of headaches. I hope for the upcoming edition the author actually visits Venezuela! LP should know better...

This book provides kids with the nitty gritty bits of information on the American Pioneers in the mid-1800s. When holier than thou information fails to woo students into enjoying and being interested in the topic, give them the bad stuff and they love it! People do learn better when they can connect and understand what others had to do to be successful. What pioneers went through in order to live makes for good reading and they become more interesting.

Illustrations are done by the illustrator and are meant to be fun not stereotypical. This is the best series there is for children and kids know better than to think everyone in the book (illustrations) are real reflections of the actual events and characters.

This historical fiction picture book is meant to be humorous but fails miserably. Instead, it offers tired and racist stereotypes of native americans, complete with insulting illustrations of native americans with enormous noses, pot bellies and war paint. Buy this book only if you need a good example of stereotyping in children's books.

Excellent Logos.......2007-03-23

Great logo reference. Thats all it is, top notch logos, and it really gives good ideas. All designs are very relevant to today's design trends. What more can you expect? Got it used, think I paid about $9 total including shipping, can't beat that.

It's not a very impresive amount of best logos and symbols. I think the simplicity is the best way to show an excellent graphic job. Most of them are very well-elaborated ideas, some very old-fashioned, and you know as a graphic artist, that those logos require a large amount of time to be created in a computer. This book is lack of good examples and i know that you could find better logos and symbols in your desktop than the ones you find here. There are good reviews in each page about the origin of the design. That's a good idea to understand the creative proccess involved. But if i were you...i'll choose another book.

Not Detailed Enough.......1999-04-13

This book gives several general ideas how to correct problems, but I felt it was not detailed enough for what I was looking for. Some of the chapters had a few letters from individuals, but the problems they were describing were very similar in nature. I would like to have seen different problems being addressed and some solutions to correct the problems.

In Debugging Your Horse, trainer Bonnie Marlewski-Probert asks you to think about the "bugs" inside your horse (other than the roundworms, that is). Your mare's tendency to spook at butterflies and the way she wriggles in the wash rack at bath time are bugs you and your horse have been living with, but don't have to. Using questions from horse owners as a jumping-off point, the author gives hard and fast advice on behavioural problems, such as head shyness, cribbing, rearing, spooking and even stumbling. She also gives preventive advice for people with new horses, green horses and show horses... The training recommendations here are solid and well-thought out, and can undoubtedly prove helpful to those plagued with "buggy" horses.
