    Book Description

            Book Description

This book kicks off with a look at Yuan-Ti Physiology, taking a comprehensive view of purebloods, halfbloods, abominations and ash-skinned. However, the entry in the Monster Manual has been greatly expanded, including rules for heat sense and tremor sense, making this race a deadly adversary in the right environment. This chapter also covers the typical Yuan-Ti diet, mating habits and the shedding of their skin, a valuable commodity for many reasons if players can get hold of it intact. Habitat takes a look at the kind of villages Yuan-Ti are apt to construct, though within their empires they can build giant temples and cities, places of absolute horror to outsiders. This leads nicely into Yuan-Ti Society, which details the kind of Imperial structure this race is likely to follow, and is readily adaptable to either Oriental or more western settings, as befits your own campaign. The Art of War chapter devotes itself to studying the way Yuan-Ti fight, developing their martial skill over long years of tradition. While warriors are held in very little regard by the rest of Yuan-Ti society, they also seek to remove themselves from the political machinations of their fellows, making them an enemy that will soon earn your players' respect. New weapons and armour are detail, as are their tactics in battle. Quickly following this is advice on how to portray Yuan-Ti to your players in a manner they will never forget and two pages of Scenario Hooks are designed to put this advice into practice, with a series of jump-off points that Games Masters can readily use to insert a few Yuan-Ti encounters directly into their campaigns. Po-Jian is a complete Yuan-Ti lair, situated in any port-side city, its inhabitants working to infiltrate civilized society for their own ends. This 'shadow nest;' can be dropped into any campaign, with Games Masters scaling encounters to suit their party's level. The Slayer's Guide to Yuan-Ti winds up with a complete Reference List, giving details of soldiers, infiltrators, Imperial bodyguards, clansmen and many more.

            Book Description

This highly innovative and intriguing book applies principles of microeconomics to unusual settings to inspire students, teachers and scholars alike in the `dismal science'. Leading experts show how economics reaches into the strangest of places and throws light onto the occasionally dark side of human nature. `Sins and Needles' examines the economics of drug addiction, prohibition and liberalization; `Guns and Roses' looks at the contribution economists can make to understanding crime as well as marriage and divorce; `Body and Soul' investigates the economics of pornography, prostitution, suicide and religion; `Conception and Rejection' explores the controversial economics of assisted reproduction and abortion; and `Fun and Games' considers the economics of sport, gambling and music.

Not only does Economics Uncut illustrate how economics can be used to promote our understanding of a broad range of human behavior, but it also draws upon research conducted in other disciplines from the social sciences. As such, this fascinating and highly accessible book will be of great interest to academics, students and researchers in economics, criminology, sociology, and psychology alike.

            5 out of 5 stars A Student's Perspective.......2007-09-26

As a student reading this textbook for the course "Economics of Behavior and Misbehavior," I find this an excellent work. Not only is it a smooth read, but it also gives me a feel for the entire picture of its topics. Just when I feel left with the question, "But what about...," there's the answer in the next sentence or paragraph. Anyone interested in the controversial issues tackled by this work can learn much from the economist's or general social scientist's perspective.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly organized and presented compendium.......2007-05-13

Expertly compiled and deftly edited by Simon W. Bowmaker (Academic Associate in Economics at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, Adjunct Lecturer in Economics at Florida State University, and Visiting Lecturer in Economics at the State University of New York, Buffalo and at the University of Colorado, Denver), "Economics Uncut: A Complete Guide To Life, Death and Misadventure" features informed and informative essays and seminal articles by eighteen accomplished economists on a variety of economic issues. The economic implications to diverse range human activities include: drug addiction, prohibition, and legalization; crime, marriage and divorce; pornography, prostitution, suicide and religion; assisted reproduction and abortion; sport, gambling, and rock music. A superbly organized and presented compendium of seminal studies and commentaries adhering to high academic standards of methodology and reporting, "Economics Uncut" is an important and strongly recommended addition to academic library Economic Studies reference collection, as well as being quite accessible to the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the economic implications and impacts with respect to the social issues of the present day.

TEMP.tation is a concise, humorous book about "temping" that offers important tips to humanize a profession which often treats workers as if they aren't quite real people. It offers warm reassurances to those people who have no work experience at all, as well as to those reentering the workforce who may be intimated by their lack of computer skills. It shows how to turn now-and-then assignments into a permanent career and provides a helping helping of hilarious work-related anecdotes.

1 out of 5 stars Not real life.......2001-07-24

I'm a temp worker, and the stuff she says is not real life. You could never get by in a temp office with her advice. Maybe in the 1950's. Don't buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Prissy and Annoying.......2001-07-06

I decided to take the plunge and read this little gem just to see if it was as bad as the negative reviews imply. Guess what? The "nays" have it. Now I know why there are so many obnoxious temps on the planet. They're organized...and they have a HANDBOOK!

1 out of 5 stars Worst... book... ever!.......2001-06-21

This book sums up the rantings of a possible obsessive-compulsive person. I bet she has changed assignments many times, because some of her "advice" are serious career-limiting moves. I wonder if she has any little rituals to go to the water fountain (get the second paper glass, not the first, but not before having sanitized it first with her own antibacterial wipes brought from home. Test the water temperature with her own thermometer, and do not drink it until it reaches 70 degrees).

If you just got a temp assignment and you want to get rid of it fast, buy this book.

              1 out of 5 stars A sad little book........2001-06-15

Carol Feltman is racist. Don't buy her book.

1 out of 5 stars Turgidity, tugidity and more turgidity........2001-06-14

It appears that Ms Feltman regards the central role of the temp in the modern work environment as being that of irritator. From her "amusing" ways of dealing with minor office incidents (usually revolving around patronising the offender until they go away or go postal) to her insistence on petty habits such as keeping a work log to throw back in the faces of anyone requesting a little extra help, she has a bad answer for any situation.

The only way I could recommend the advice in this pitiful excuse for a book would be if someone desperately wanted out of a temping position. Even then I'd be loathe to do it.

              5 out of 5 stars A good read!.......2001-03-28

Timeless Places: Morocco is an enjoyable read, which takes the reader (and the viewer) to a land which is filled with mystery and mysticism. The language is poetic, and the photography is breathtaking.

This book was cool! I couldn't put it down. Dr. Levin-Waldman blows the lid off the latent hippocracy behind the minimum wage "debate" with real statistics and voting records. When I first started reading the book, I was under the impression that the various parties in the "dialogue" over the minimum wage had hardly changed their positions, and boy was I ever wrong! This book is a must read

Gathering together some of the most memorable articles that have appeared in the Networker since 1982, it chronicles the personal and professional challenges confronting today's family therapists. It looks at clinical advances in such diverse areas as couples therapy, brief treatment, approaches to substance abuse and family violence, and work with teens and small children. The Evolving Therapist traces the major debates of the last 10 years, from the therapeutic relevance of gender inequality to the ethics of constructivism. It explores the changing conceptions of the family therapist's role, while examining the impact of the decade's social, economic, and political tumult on our work.

                            Book Description

Overall, Volume 1 reflects the realisation that reproductive mechanisms are of fundamental importance in understanding the success of insects as organisms, together with the fact that some insects have provided model systems with which to study important fundamental reproductive processes such as spermatogenesis, mitosis and meiosis. This volume therefore deals with the structure and function of the basic machinery of reproduction: gonads, ducts, gametes, fertilization and early development and sets out what is known (and also what is not known) about these processes. Because of the enormous growth in the recent literature on insect reproduction, each chapter serves as an introduction for a newcomer in the respective research field by providing a complete list of references.

                            Book Description

On the rooftop of the world, shoe-horned into the Grand Himalayas, Bhutan—or Thunder Dragon—is a fiercely independent kingdom. Isolated, charming, peaceful and religious, the Bhutanese are a pragmatic, sensitive people who take from the West what will benefit their country and leave the rest. Only 4,000 tourists will visit the kingdom in any one year and they are strictly monitored by a government that cares deeply for its people, environment and heritage. The countryside is pristine, the lifestyle and culture have been preserved for centuries, and the love of life is abundant among the people. Few outsiders know Bhutan as intimately as Françoise Pommaret; her guidebook takes you on an incredible journey of discovery and adventure; her love of the people and the place shines through; her in-depth knowledge helps aid our understanding of why this unique land has long remained one of Asia's deepest mysteries and best-kept secrets.

                            • Extensively revised and updated by the world's leading expert on Bhutan who has many years' experience visiting and working in this amazing kingdom • Essential facts for the visitor including what to bring, how to book, visas, customs, climate, health and money • 67 color photographs • 3 maps • In-depth treatment of each region of the kingdom: what to see, its history and significance • Invaluable guide to trekking and mountaineering • Special excerpts include: national symbols of Bhutan, archery and other sports, ceremonial scarves, the Dzongkha language, chortens and mandalas • Literary excerpts add a historical perspective

This guidebook to Bhutan was not at all helpful. It is filled with tiny details which may be of interest to the devotee, but gives the average traveler very limited background. You can read about the many different kinds of chortens, for example, but you will find the discussion of Tantric Buddhism in general perplexing. The maps are not good, and no attempt is made to separate the spectacular (such as the Punakha Dzong) from the mundane (such as the Thimpu Dzong). The information on trekking is very limited and dated. Get the Lonely Planet guide, along with the Bart Jordan book on trekking-if you intend to do a trek. Bhutan is a very expensive country to visit, and you should have a better guide in hand before your visit.

5 out of 5 stars A book for appreciating and understanding Bhutan.......2006-12-04

I have traveled extensively in the Far East, but have never before to Bhutan, until now (2007). I always like to read up on places before I visit them and generally travel as independently as reasonably possible.
I purchased both this book and the Lonely Planet guide and found the combination excellent. This book has more about the places, the people and their customs and the history. Don't expect it to be a comprehensive list of places to stay and places to eat. It contrasts well with Lonely Planet's backpacker's reference book image.
I think this is a good book and doubt whether you will be disappointed if you buy it.

this is a thorough study of the horse's back. Every bone, every muscle and the functions are explained in this book. Also discussed are ways to keep the back functioning properly. The author explains what to look for from the horse's body actions that might hint to pain from the back. It's a good book and one that you can read again about eery 6 months to a year...for a refresher.

                                5 out of 5 stars Night light........2004-05-27

You might think that the humble postcard is just a piece of printed cardboard but just read John Jakle's fascinating book and discover there is a lot more behind these colorful images. The eighty-two cards in the book, dated from 1900 to 1977, show a selective view of cities at night, as Jakle explains (in a very comprehensive introduction) the card publishers, at least in the early years of the last century, were quite happy to add a row of street lights if none existed and city fathers frequently felt pressure to then put them up.

Before the introduction of fast film most night-time postcards were day-time photographs and illustrations with a black sky added or maybe a moon with a cloudy sky painted in and street lights made to glow, some of these do look rather crude though. New film and cameras in the thirties allowed postcard photographers to be more creative, with strobe effects for instance and the old favorite, the time-lapse.

Though most cards from the thirties onwards are photographs many were still heavily retouched to give even more sparkle to the image, page 107 shows a looking down view of San Francisco with searchlights in the background and streets of the city just dazzling with light, it was taken in 1940. A slightly different view is of Capitol Street, Jackson, Mississippi in 1955 (page 67) here the street lights are strangely dim but the sidewalks are aglow with light from shop windows and plenty of neon, a positive reflection of the city as modern and progressive or as the author says 'Postcard views were expected to celebrate cities and do so in ways that would preserve, if not strengthen, the social status quo'.

The production and design of the book is first-class, landscape in format, to compliment the typical postcard shape, each card has a page to itself with a long caption. The back of the book has an appendix about collecting these interesting postcards and a bibliography.

Another book (also beautifully produced) of city postcards that I have enjoyed is 'American Architecture: a vintage postcard collection' by Luc Van Malderen (ISBN 1864700785) which has 625 mainly illustrative images and includes several night-time views. Both books will interest anyone who wants to learn more about how cities were presented to the public.
