Customer Reviews:
Not Stickley, but popular for a reason.......2006-08-21
Yes, I'm partial to Stickley's designs, but these are the four-squares and bungalows I see more of on both coasts.
If you own a bungalow, four-square, Colonial, or cottage of this period and would like to restore some of its original character, this is a good reference book.
The exterior views include details such as landscaping.
Interior photos, meant to highlight the choices in millwork and such, give a taste of the fashions in decorating.
Toward the end of the book are plans for beach cottages and garages that might inspire a humble retreat or workshop, or perhaps a playhouse or doghouse.
The final pages are ads for the kinds of light fixtures and plumbing fixtures your grandparents likely got rid of in past updates of their houses, and furnaces such as the hulking monster that remained in the basement of a house I rented in Bristol.
Whether you get practical use from this book or not, you will probably enjoy it.
You say Montgomery Wards, I say Gordon Van Tine..........2006-01-14
I'm a bit surprised to see that Dover chose the 1925 Montgomery Ward catalog to reprint, as they also did the 1923 Gordon Van Tine catalog and these companies were closely linked.
In fact, unlike Sears, Montgomery Ward did not have their own mills, lumber yards, architectural staff, designers, etc., so they turned to Gordon Van Tine (based in Davenport, Iowa) to supply their homes. In other words, when you placed an order for a cute little kit home from Montgomery Ward, they placed the order with Gordon Van Tine.
When your house arrived (in about 30,000 pieces, via boxcar), the shipping labels would read "Montgomery Ward" and the kit would have (probably) shipped from the GVT mill in Davenport.
If you have both catalogs (GVT and MW) compare them side by side and you'll see that they're virtually identical, with names and identifying marks changed in all the right places.
That being said, this is a dandy little catalog and if you suspect you have a kit home from Montgomery Ward, you may also want to invest in the GVT (1923) catalog that Dover offers.

Book Description
A modern update of medieval trade manuals--the 'come-along-with-me' (vade mecum) of medieval craftsmen--Words of Wisdom: A Curator's Vade Mecum is an invaluable guidebook for anyone interested in contemporary art and the practice of curating. In over fifty short and concise essays, this compendium presents advice to a new generation of curators from established masters of contemporary art exhibitions who, over the past twenty-five years, have played a crucial role in shaping what we see today, and how we see it. While providing an intimate look at the minds of these master curators, Words of Wisdom also establishes the curator's craft as an important vocation that has changed tremendously over the past quarter-century. In the course of their musings, the curators offer behind-the-scenes insights into influential exhibitions and institutions and the contemporary art world they represent. Among the contributors are Jean-Christophe Amman, director of the Museum of Modern Art, Frankfurt, Germany; Donna de Salvo, curator at the Tate Gallery, London; Richard Flood, chief curator at the Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis; independent curator Hans-Ulrich Obrist; and Marcia Tucker, founding director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.
Customer Reviews:
Not Only for Curators!.......2005-04-28
This is a great compendium of writings by some of the most prominent independent or affiliated curators working internationally today. Each was asked ten questions about curating and each responded in a different and fascinating way.
This is an interesting book for all those interested in the relationship between the artist and the display of their work. It illuminates what a modern curator does and fascinates us by showing us that curators today have a broad variety of perspectives on what their job really is. Some of the curators see themselves as auteurs, while others merely feel they are an instrument for the artist. Highly recommended.

Book Description
In 1991, Time Magazine wrote that Americans were tired of the rat race and wanted a “simple life.” And no Americans were more desirous to find something personally meaningful than the 77 million Baby Boomers populating the place. Stumbling into the ancient village of Chagford amid the desolate Dartmoor in England, the author encounters villagers at a pub called Bullers Arms, who seem to embody that “simple life.” He meets them, and marvels at their camaraderie and stress-free life. Moreover, he demonstrates that even if Boomers discovered this life, they would still be haunted by a generational ghost that prevents a truly simple existence: Vietnam, a measuring stick for America since the 1970s and a collective guilt trip following every Boomer. Surely, such a “ghost” couldn’t inhabit a sleepy village on the moor? In fact, there is a ghost, as terrible as Vietnam, and the author reveals it. During his final stay, he also discovers that life is not that simple in Chagford, but that there is still a way to attain this elusive dream. Written in a lively, humorous style and traveling from past to present, Bullers Arms is a journey you will take with relish, again and again.

The Blitzkrieg Legend: The 1940 Campaign in the West
ASIN: 0275963543 |
Book Description
For General George S. Patton, Jr., the battle for Lorraine during the fall and winter of 1944 was a frustrating and grueling experience of static warfare. Plagued by supply shortages, critical interference from superiors, flooded rivers, fortified cities, and the highly-determined German army, Patton had little opportunity to wage a fast armored campaign. Rickard examines Patton's generalship during these bitter battles and suggests that Patton was unable to adapt to the new realities of the campaign, thereby failing to wage the most effective warfare possible. By the beginning of the Ardennes offensive, Patton had crippled his worthy opponent, but had suffered the highest casualties of any campaign that he conducted during the war. Until now, his better known exploits in Sicily and Normandy have overshadowed this campaign. Relying on a broad range of sources, this treatment of Patton's operational performance in Lorraine goes beyond the official history. It describes Patton's philosophy of war and explains why it essentially failed in Lorraine. Supplemented by full orders of battle, casualty and equipment losses, and excellent maps, Patton at Bay is a penetrating study of America's best fighting general.
Customer Reviews:
Patton revealed.......2007-08-05
If our generals of WW2 had been under the spotlight of today many of our "great heads would roll". This book unravels some of the misleading "successes" we were feed by the journalists of that era.
See also "An Army At Dawn" to read about more of our human costs to glorify men's egos.
Academic yes, all swoon for Patton no, but fair representation and analysis of a less famous period of Third Army action.......2006-04-21
John N. Rickard's "Patton At Bay: Lorraine Campaign, September to December, 1944" is certainly an academic tour-de-force examination of the Lorraine Campaign and the role of US Third Army. Readers should not expect descriptions of small-unit actions but rather Corps (sometimes Division) level action, as well as analysis of decisions made by Patton and his subordinate commanders that dictated the pace and 'style' of combat in the Lorraine region in the fall of 1944. In particular "Patton At Bay" mainly covers the period from Sept to early Dec as the Third Army's mobile armored drive of Aug shifted to several, often disjoined, ground to a largely attritional and mostly static push against defensive positions to which the Germans fell back during their rout from France. Rickard not only provides the reader with a considerable amount of historical detail but also attempts to inject perspective and unbiased analysis.
At least one reviewer has criticized "Patton At Bay" as being 'overly academic' and 'lacking in true understanding of military tactics and strategy' - this reviewer certainly cannot argue against "Patton At Bay" being a serious piece of academic historiography, but it is a bit strong to flatly state that Rickard misses the boat on the real outcome of Patton's leadership in the Lorraine Campaign. In fact Rickard is up front in saying that despite problems that arose, as Rickard concludes, largely from Patton's over optimism, underestimation of German resilience, and decision to set siege to Metz and associated 'forts', the campaign was largely successful in that the Germans lost proportionately larger numbers of men, machines and equipment and were ultimately forced all the way to the West Wall (Siegfried Line). What Rickard does is criticize the venerated Patton and Third Army as not being faultless - this upsets some. It is in fact the duty of the historian to provide a fair and balanced judgment and assessment of events and decisions, and in this Rickard fully succeeds.
"Patton At Bay" is a solid piece of historical literature that is recommended highly for those who want a more "academic" less "visceral and parochial" view of the US Third Army in NW Europe during one of its less press-popular periods of action. 4 solid stars.
Academic, but no sense of Military Leadership.......2001-07-11
I found the book to be an exercise in academic deconstructionism. For example, the author assumed a lack of strategic flexibility on the part of Patton to deal with the static battle line. An interesting assumption but confusing tactics with strategy, especially grand strategy, is always a problematic tendency of academics. A career military professional will see through the rather weak argument and see the authors attempt to lable the Lorraine campaign as a "defeat". The author predicates his argument of the assumption that the Ruhr was more important than it turned out to be, that Patton was wrong concerning his belief that, if supplies had not been redirected, he could have pressed the Rhine and misses the opportunity to see the creative flexibility of the 3rd Army as it relieved Bastogne, a feat which no other allied commander believed could be done in less than 30 days. When viewed against the exploits of the 1st, 9th, and 5th Armies, it seems that the author is simply looking to write a book that will cause a stir about an American icon. Patton was rude, crude and certainly a primodona. He was wisely never choosen as a group commander, in my opinion. However,Patton, unlike Napolean, never lost and that is sometimes hard for "fair" minded American academics to take in light of his anti-academic approach to killing the enemy. Unlike Eisenhower and Bradely, who were overjoyed at the taking of territory, Patton, in his and his subordinates writtings, knew that to win wars you must engage and destroy the enemy not hold territory.
An Academic critique of an American icon.......1999-11-17
This is one of the only books I've ever read that critique General Patton. This book, to me the layman seems extremely well researched, and worthy of academic exaltations. The author is brave to look at the Lorraine Campaign with such a critical eye, not always welcome on American icons of war.

Book Description
A team of prominent historians and curators have produced this innovative cultural history of gold and its impact on the development of Australian society. Throughout history, gold has been the "stuff" of legends, fortunes, conflict and change. The discovery of gold in Australia 150 years ago precipitated enormous developments in the newly settled land. The population and economy boomed in spontaneous cities. The effects on both the environment and indigenous Aboriginal peoples have been profound and lasting.

Book Description
FutureNatural brings together theorists of culture and science to discuss the concept of "nature"--its past, present and future. Contributors discuss the impact on our daily life of recent developments in biotechnologies, electronic media and ecological politics, addressing the issue of whether political and cultural debates about the body and the environment can take place without reference to "nature" or the "natural." This collection considers how we might think a future developing from emergent scientific theories and discourses.

Customer Reviews:
Bible.......2007-03-10
This book is the bible of structural engineering of tall buildings. Every designer should read it and every time you want to design a tower, you should use it. Thanks for hectic effort Prof. Taranth provided to help the structural engineers.
A must source for structural engineers.......2003-04-12
This is a great analysis and design book in tall buildings. You will find plenty of examples and discussions. Although the book does not get deep into some of the advanced topics, it is still a great source for structural engineers.
Very Practical and Useful Book.......2001-12-07
It is a very practical book containg material which will be useful to those engaged in the design of tall buildings. The unique thing about this book is the fact Taranath has given details of many important tall buildings, which will guide us before choosing a framework for the new building. He also explains how a structural system can be chosen. It has numerous practical examples. The code clauses are clearly explained. The Design for Wind and Earthquake are given in a nice manner with reference to latest codes of practices. His explanations are very easy to understand. Lateral and gravity systems for steel, concrete and composite constructions are given with numerous drawings in seperate chapters. Analysis techniques are given in an easy to understand fashion with less mathematical complexity. Design methods are also given. Discussion on related items such as damping and cladding systems,Foundation design, seismic design of Diaphragm ,etc. are also included. The data on Structural quantities will be a boon to those who want to have a preliminary estimate of the building, they are going to design. In all, it is a book worth buying and will serve as a reference for a long time. With this book and a proper software, we can design any tall building with ease.

Book Description
Photographer Jitka Hanzlov's new series, Forest, here accompanied by a John Berger essay, continues her work in and around the village where she grew up, leaving the town and its inhabitants for the forest. Her stark prints explore the Moravian woods of her youth--and all the naturally-occurring corridors, courtyards, haunted houses and gilded ponds there--as a kind of visible, perceptible "unknown" in herself and the viewer, as a dark spring, as the unfathomed depths from which we emerge. Though many of us don't often go into the forest, we know that it is there, and we know that it is critical to both the way one imagines the world--light and dark, city and country, home and unknown territory--and to the physical processes, not least the manufacture of oxygen, that keep the world going. In this respect, Hanzlov's work is once again, as it has been so directly in Female, and persistently in Rokytnik, meaningful sociopolitically as well as aesthetically.
Customer Reviews:
FOREST.......2006-08-28
FOREST is a book of color photographs. Though not all, many are taken in low light; because of this we see colors not ordinarily seen, we see colorlessness in instances where light will not emit color. Jitka Hanzlova photographs seasons, water, insects, trees, flowers, a smattering of the basics we could expect. Light, is well used to shape these images. It defines the compositions, it is often sparse, comes from behind, glows, reflects, creates linear compositions of branches, mutates color, and creates mood. Color is subtle, sometimes intense; it is in the grasses, weeds, sunlight and dark snows. She sees very well in color; it's truly a photographic book.
What to say about the photographs? They are simple and experiential. They lack the sophistication we have come to expect of traditional landscape photography. And, they are all the better for that lack. The pictures are not artistically contrived nor edited to express a philosophical, environmental, or personal agenda. They are simply seen, simply shared by one very familiar here. They are very still images by a lone photographer. The book is not polished up nor finished off, it is open ended and continuing.
Personally I found the introduction to be at cross-purposes with the images. The questions, the multiple enigmas expressed, seemed too very heavily philosophical an introduction to the sophisticated simplicity of the images. As I was not familiar with this photographer I would have liked more information on her photographic process and materials though that is not necessary for the enjoyment of this book.
I've been back for a "look" many times. I found it a pleasure, delightful, and fresh.

Book Description
The Interregnum has been interpreted variously as a conspiracy of rich ill-intentioned men and as a subterranean rumbling within the whole frame of society. `Into Another Mould' takes up a number of significant themes about a period which continues to attract the attention of historians, who have in recent years tended to concentrate on the causes, at the expense of the course and consequence, of the troubles of the 1640s and 1650s. This fully revised and updated second edition includes two new chapters.
The intention is to stimulate interest and to offer guidance through some of the thickets of confusion and controversy which have grown up as an effect of the historiographical disputations of revisionist and post-revisionist researchers.

Book Description
This book presents the state of the art in modeling and simulation on supercomputers. Leading German research groups present their results achieved on high-end systems of the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) for the year 2003. The reports cover all fields of computational science and engineering ranging from computational fluid dynamics via computational physics and chemistry to computer science. Special emphasis is given to industrially relevant applications. Presenting results for both vector-systems and micro-processor based systems, the book allows the reader to compare performance levels and usability of a variety of supercomputer architectures. In the light of the success of the Japanese Earth-Simulator, this book may serve as a guide book for a US response. The book covers the main methods in high performance computing. Its outstanding results in achieving highest performance for production codes are of particular interest for both the scientist and the engineer. The book comes with a wealth of color illustrations and tables of results.
