Breathtaking.......2007-09-07

This book is simply amazing in every respect, from the gorgeous photographs to the poetic text dedicated to the animals featured inside it. Robert Vavra is one of the most brilliantly visual artists I've ever come across.

On each page, there's a small but clear picture of an animal's face in the corner and a larger photograph that focuses on the animal's fur/feathers in stunning detail. You may not know the extent of nature's beauty until you see a peacock's feathers, a butterfly's wings, or an abolone's shell up close! With each creature, Vavra pens a poetic "song" dedicated to their nature and habits.

I recommend this book to any lover of beauty, young or old! Thank you Vavra, for your blessed vision.

Sensual Delights.......2002-02-02

Considered to be "left brain" (intellectual/academic), this book urged -- no, required -- my "right brain" (aesthetic/artistic) to dominate. And what a joyous experience. Executive behavior is simply what managers do. But what do they do? To answer this question, Kelly reviews the observational studies of managerial behavior made in the 1950s and 1960s by H. Mintzberg and S. Carlson, among others, and updates the record by including research of the 1980s and 1990s. This hard data of scientific observation is compared to and contrasted with the soft data of top manager interviews and CEO biographies, which includes material on Lee Iacocca, John Akers, Steven Jobs, John Sculley, and Jack Welch. To get these "facts" and "fictions" of executive life together in a meaningful and understandable way, this book develops a new view of executive behavior, which focuses on two paradigms: the classical and existential models of the manager. In the classical approach, the manager plans, organizes, leads, and evaluates (POLEs). Both observational studies and the soft data of interviews and biographies shows the executive to be a much more intuitive person who engages in fleeting, superficial, and often distracting interactions with his or her peers and subordinates. A comprehensive history of the New Georgia campaign.......2003-02-16

Mr. Altobello's book does justice to a previously overlooked pacific campaign. Situated chronologically between Guadalcanal and Bougainville, it has become a footnote in history. It, unfortunately, was not a very well run campaign, lasting much longer and costing much more in men and material than anticipated. The reasons for this are several - inadequately trained, poorly led troops,a terrible attack plan that was made worse with modifications, poor intelligence, and a worthy opponent in defense. In all honesty, in 1943, the south pacific theater was low on the list for appropriations, most army troops available were national guard divisions with little or no combat experiance, and the navy was somewhat limited in its' support ability due to enormous losses at Guadalcanal - specifically no fleet carrier support. So, this campaign was a painful learning experiance for theses services ,and learn they did, with the much more successful campaigns in '44-45. The author has obviously done extensive research on this campaign and no facet of it is not well covered. I highly recommend this book to persons wanting in depth coverage of the Solomons campaign or someone with particular interest in the New Georgia campaign.

The Way it Was.......2001-05-13

I participated in this operation and was a member of the lst Raider Bn. The author was very detailed in his various reports of the battles and accurate. His description of the battle fields and terrain were exactly what I remembered. He wrote about the "grunts" their feelings and miseries - the heroes and those not quite as heroics. He pulled no strings for marines or soldiers or sailors. He called the shots. He was so detailed in his reporting that I swear he must have been there. I recommend this to veterans of that campaign especially. You will never know what was going on over there, even if you were there, unless you read this book.

Brian Altobello's Into The Shadows Furious is the vividly presented story of the American battle to drive out the Japanese from New Georgia after the U.S. armed forces had finally secured Guadalcanal in the spring of 1943. The Japanese airbase at Munda on the island of New Georgia was a vital target and the focus of the Army's 43rd Division. The Japanese commander, Major General Sasaki, had prepared a series of strong defensive positions and roadblocks on the trails east from Munda directly in front of the American advance. The ensuing combat in difficult terrain slowed the Americans long enough that General Sasaki managed to evacuate the bulk of his forces. Into The Shadows Furious is compelling reading and a superb addition to the growing library of World War II Pacific Theater with its vivid, powerful story of an almost forgotten campaign that took a tremendous toll in blood and lives.

A Great Read!.......2001-01-02

Altobello does a great job describing the true enemy in the battle of New Georgia, the merciless terrain. His vivid descriptions of the unrelenting jungle of New Georgia and its arsenal of weapons (mangrove swamps, giant crabs, mosquito swarms, and torrential rains) make it easy for the reader to visualize the obstacles our young soldiers faced. Into the Shadows Furious is at its best, however, when Altobello is describing the emotional battles the soldiers endured. Through his own easy to read and insightful prose and through the oral accounts of actual battle of New Georgia participants, Altobello is able to capture the frustrations and mental anguish that our yet untested soldiers faced. The resulting story is a compelling account of both the physical and mental journey each solider underwent during the costly battle of New Georgia.

It'll make you cry.......2000-12-22

My father fought at Munda and New Georgia. He is now dead and he rarely talked about his experiences. As a 50 year old man, I have become interested in the New Georgia Campaign. Altobello makes you understand that Guadalcanal got all the press and that New Georgia was more violent. Altobello forces you to smell the rotten jungle floor and feel the blankets of mosquitos that covered bare skin. Altobello then wraps the physical conditions in terror and fright. I regret that I was ever a hippie.

Raises Questions To Ponder.......2005-12-30

"Tocqueville's America: The Great Quotations" is a stimulating collecting of quotations from this renowned observer of, and commentator on the early American scene. Arranged topically, the reader is treated to a broad range of thought provoking ideas of what America was, served in the span of this relatively short book.

Tocqueville shares his ideas on how Democracies and Aristocracies behave differently in the social, economic, political, religious and military spheres.

Among the selections, I found the most thought provoking to be those which challenge the reader to think about whether the America of Tocqueville's day still exists, or have we become more like the Europe with which he contrasted us. Is the taste for intellectual pleasures still lacking in America, as compared to other countries? Do we still produce a large volume of low quality art, as compared to the small volume, high quality produced by others? Do we still have a broad, but shallow education? Is our country still decentralized?

This book raises questions which we can ponder indefinitely. This is a book to read, reread and just peruse for the intellectual stimulation which only this sage of yore can provide.

This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever had. There are lots of fun projects with detailed instructions. If you enjoy your animal neighbors, you should get this book.

Best book I've seen on houses for wildlife........1998-09-11

The most complete and innovative book on bird houses I've seen yet. Not only that, it has houses and other structures for bats, butterflies, squirrels, bees and toads. I especially like the variety and creativity of the "abodes" -- natural looking, not cutesy. The section on what each type of wildlife needs is especially welcome. I read this book in the library and had to make it part of my permanent collection.

This book provides serveral varieties of houses for different animals. The instructions are well written and easy to do. Also, the book provides information about where to place the completed houses and why the houses will attract animals.

This is a great book w/good basic instructions........1998-07-08

This book has good, clear instructions for many projects, from bird houses to toad houses, from woodworking to working with gourds and reeds. It also has helpful information about placement of houses and the ecology of selected species. We've already made 4 houses from it, all of which we were able to build quickly and successfully. There were one or two places where the directions lacked certain details, but in general the instructions had the right amount of specificity. The book has beautiful pictures of every project, and has inspired us to do more to attract backyard wildlife.

Very helpful for my first and second visits to Boston!.......2006-12-24

I took my first trip to Boston this summer and this book was very helpful in helping me with restaurants, shopping, sight-seeing and especially transportation. When I went back this past weekend, I brought it with me again. In two trips, I feel like I know the city pretty well. Highly recommend it. It doesn't get a 5 only because I disagree with some of the ratings of restaurants and because I found some places on my own that were not listed in the book. No biggie. I mean, the author couldn't possibly cover every single place in Boston worth seeing.

Could have been better...................2003-10-06

I feel that although Alice Rhea presents alot of good, common-sense ideas from her long association with cats (hers included) and their owners, she falls short in some parts of this book when it comes to judging the cause or the solution to some of the behaviors mentioned.

Her "if-all-else-fails" attitude of locking a cat inside a carrier for the night (and placing the carrier in another room) is, in my opinion, downright ABUSIVE, CRUEL, and traumatic for the cat. Even if the carrier were big enough for a litterbox, and at least a dish of water (which kitty could tip over in his frantic efforts to get out), it would still be cruel. When getting out of bed in the middle of the night, what are the odds that the cat owner will GENTLY place the cat in the carrier???? And once kitty is locked up in this jail cell of a carrier, suppose there was a fire, or an equally urgent emergency that would cause the residents to leave the home abruptly -- what would happen to kitty, locked up in a carrier in a remote part of the house or garage??? Whether remembered and or forgotten, kitty stands to lose its life!!!!

And although she makes a good point about "Bad Breath" (may be a sign of serious dental disease), she doesn't pick up this thread in the "Messy Eater" section -- messy eating could also be a sign of diseased gums or teeth.

"Bed Lying on" does not even mention the SIMPLEST approach to keeping or getting cat hairs off the bed (in addition to locking the cat out of the bedroom buit NOT in a carrier) -- 1) Daily Brushing and 2) daily use of lint rollers, available in any drug store or pet store. My 3 cats, two of whom are longhaired (and who love being brushed every day) are welcome on my bed -- and so is the lint roller.

I was disappointed with those specific parts of the book -- with all those years of contact with cats and cat owners (and being, herself a multi-pet owner), Ms. Rhea did her readers (many of them not familiar with cat behavior) a disservice in those specific areas of her book, by not pursuing a less abusive way of dealing with these problems.

Help with a smile.......2003-06-24

This book brought a lot of smiles and laughs of recognition. As the "pets" of 2 homebound felines, we gained a world of understanding about how our companions viewed us and our shared home. The startle-can trick works wonders for keeping cats off furniture, even when we "alpha-cats" are not around. Handy habit-troubleshooting guide and clear explanations of what underlies the behavior. Have already shared the book with other cat-companions and they are getting their own copies for continued future reference.

Good Owners, Bad Habits.......2001-01-05

All in all, a fantastic book! I have recommended this book to tens of people already ... if you want clear, common sensical and effective ways of (re)training your kitty or want to understand why your cat is peeing in your bed/lounge/laundry ... then this is the book for you. Yes, it is written in a simple, good natured way, but if you are actually willing to put to work the advice given, it is a god-send. This is not a book for people who want a quick-fix, sell me a pill type solutions!! All the recommendations in here work - I have two living examples - but they all take some effort and time ...

Disappointing........2000-09-24

I wanted so much more from this book. I felt that the information contained was mainly common sense, and the writing seemed to be aimed toward a small child. Not only that, but the quality of this print is pretty bad - cheap paper and binding. There are so many better books out there, with creative and innovative techniques described that WORK. My kitties required that I try another title: "Is Your Cat Crazy?: Solutions from the Casebook of a Cat Therapist" by John C. Wright. I found this title to be much more helpful.

I gave this book two stars because a child might benefit from it, or even just someone who simply has not spent much time around cats.

Everything you need to know about your cat...in simple terms.......1999-04-17

Being the "protector and slave" of 8 cats, I thought I had a fair amount of knowledge on how to deal with feline behavior! I had also read a large number of books over the years on the subject. However, I was really surprised at how useful Alice Rhea's book is and how much more I have learned about cats from it. A huge variety of problems are answered in the book in a clear and simple style which outlines the problem, explains why it happens, suggests ways of stopping it, and details how to stop it from ever happening in your household. Ms. Rhea writes in a most entertaining way and obviously is a great cat lover. I have recommended this book to many friends, including to experienced cat breeders. It is a most comprehensive book at a bargain price. Highly recommended.

JUST OK .. THERE ARE BETTER REFERENCE GUIDES AVAILABLE ON THIS SUBJECT. THERE IS A LOT OF MATERIAL THAT IS NOT COVERED IN THIS "COFFEE TABLE" REFERENCE AND IDENTIFICATION GUIDE. I HAD ACTUALLY EXPECTED A MORE COMPREHENSIVE REFERENCE BOOK SOLEY BASED ON THE REVIEWS I HAD READ.
