Wirtz International, the master landscape architecture firm, originated in 1950 when Jacques Wirtz founded his practice in Schoten, Belgium. The company has since become a thriving family business, with Wirtz's two sons, Martin and Peter, joining the firm, which now employs 11 people. Gardens in Belgium and all its neighboring countries, plus Italy, Switzerland and the United States, are currently underway; past work has been undertaken in Japan, Spain, and Portugal. This book comes in 2 volumes, with both over 100 pages each. High quality bound and exclusive paper makes this book a pleasant reading experience. It is worth the price - at its current price I personally consider it even underpriced ($ 168.00). Every page shows high quality impressive photographs of the Wirtz gardens. The text, without dominating the presence of the photographs, is highly descriptive about the plants with their common and latin names, the spirits of the featured landscape designs, and the rationales and philosophies behind each featured design. The Wirtz Gardens are an example of Art while tying classical designs and natural elements of the environment together. This book features a very eclectic approach to landscaping with mysterious and calm beauty. I highly recommend this piece of art for anyone considering to hire a landscape architect or for someone who is looking for inspiration. Even for simple reading pleasure, this book is a treat.

I picked this book up because i thought it would give some basics on animation through flash, but it only goes over coloring illustration in flash. Its still useful if your interested in flash, and you can apply some of the concepts to working in other art programs as well.

The book covers a few artists explaining how they color an inllustration using flash, each uses different techniques so its useful to be provided with that range of knowledge.

I've used Flash before and I mainly thought of it as an online animation or game medium but I never dreamed of drawing, much less CGing on it until I saw this book.

It's a very handy book to learn how to draw and color using the versatile Flash program. Flash is easy to use and have features that make Photoshop look like an old model robot and Flash the new space-age cyborg in the block. Seriously, it takes me quite a bit of time to CG something on Photoshop even with a tablet (or maybe I'm just a perfectionist). Don't worry - Flash images can be imported to your Adobe and Corel programs and vice versa.

As for the meat of the book, each artist shows you how they approach doing their art in Flash. They each have their own way of going about it which allows you the option of learning whichever suits you best. If this is the case though, the other methods may not be as useful to you and is a waste of most of your money. There are also some provocative images but no nudity in here, so take note.

If you want to learn how to use Flash, get the offical Macromedia Flash book published by Macromedia. If you just want to learn how to illustrate your characters in Flash and nothing else, then this is the book for you.

Great Techniques.......2004-07-23

If you have the ammount of money to buy Flash, this book is really useful on helping you make great pictures with it. Of course, some experience with drawing is required, but Flash really help you create a much more sleek design for your characters.

It has some useful tips for cell-shading your characters. The only problem I had was with how they explained the gradients. It tells you how to do it on Flash 5, but with the newest version, MX and MX 2004, you're on your own for figuring it out.

Good, but lacking..........2004-07-03

I wanted this book, since I first found it at my local bookstore. I finally got it, and I have to say that it does give you some pretty good tips. There are some parts that it leaves out though. Like how to exactly do a gradation on the skin. It just goes quickly over it. I use Flash MX 2004, and this book doesn't cover it. So some of the techniques they were conveying were troublesome for me because the Flash I use has things in a slightly different place. Not to mention, each of the artist have a different technique to how to use Flash. So take what's best for you and make up your own way. To get a true experience from this book I do recommend getting a graphical tablet (just like I need to do). I just hope the next book covers at least simple animations, such as blnking eyes, tapping foot, and maybe some hair blowing in a breeze or something. Get the book, it's enjoyable and educational for the people who are wanting to give coloring in a different format a try.

Great for the Manga weak on the Flash.......2004-06-17

I am a big fan of these "How to Draw Manga" series. I bought this one primarly for the Flash techniques and I have to say it falls short on that topic. Although it covered Flash, it only covered it to the basics and spent a little too much time on the over all process and pages of barely dressed Bishoujo. Don't get me wrong the images in this book are amazing it just did not include the juicy gold nugget techniques and shortcuts I was looking for.

This book is an eloquently written, serious, and original set of lectures. The book will interest political scientists as much as historians or just simple readers ( as myself) because of its explicit orientation to " International history" . There is a highlight of very deep manipulation of the concepts of power, economy, and culture in order to explain why his three eras-late Meiji, interwar, and postwar differ from each other.
Well, is not a simple analysis, and is without spelling errors , not as some reviews about it.

Just like the other review above. This book was aweful. There were three chapters that werent really chapters at all. It was one long "history" book. I do not suggest this book to any East Asian History enthusiast. His facts were far and few between, and his facts were weak and could have been better. You could do far much better with a middle school history book.

this one is a dud.......1999-07-26

This is a series of shoddy lectures (142) the author did and then had run off. It is a shallow thematic history on hte relations between China and japan with special emphasis on hte pre World War period. The guy is a historian of sorts and the global bit of the title is to hide just how shallow is his knowledge. Harvard have obviously little to do with their money if they publish weak drivel like this.

Inspired me to change my major.......2002-09-09

I picked this book up for some fun reading two years ago, and wow! Did I get more than I expected! As an educated individual I knew a lot about the new directions in contemprary music, and I often dreamed of uniting my love for physics and architecture with my musical talents. This book is a fascinating and well designed introduction to the kind of developments in contemporary architectural/musical circles. These projects discussed in PA-16 are some of the first of their kind, and something I am excited to follow up on in my own lifetime. And it's dedicated to John Cage! I reccommend this book to anyone who is at all curious about architecture or contemporary music. It is always refreshing to learn about people who are pushing the boundaries of our imaginations, whatever the topic.

In the begginning i was impressed by the title but disappointed by the quality of its material besides the font is very bad and hard to read , very small sketches hard to see , and the ideas exploration is not accomplished ,so never start with this book for this subject ....

For me, this is a thoughtful 80-page booklet touching, with a big broad-brush stroke, on some very intuative and evocative ideas on interdisciplinary work framed around ideas of time and space. To expect a book in the successful Pamphlet Architecture series to be an end all exhaustive study of any given subject is like looking at Time or Granta magazines renowned fiction writings and comparing it to a 500-page Dostoevsky novel - both are equally valid views of the world, but to compare them is like comparing apples to oranges.

To cover such an intensive topic in a paperback series format with the aim of bringing interest to a subject that is not explored by many in contemporary theory; to have a current look at an age old topic for students to use as a springboard for research; and for over five years to be rated #18 on amazon.com's bestseller list is quite an accomplishment. I encourage all to keep thinking and writing - taking a chance.

Hats off to the young authors the Pamphlet Architecture series supports!

Am I Missing Something, or Is the Book Missing Something?.......2000-06-02

As the title suggests, I was hoping for a book with a thorough symbolic analysis of the connection between architecture (the design of elements in space; or the configuration of space) and music (the design of elements in time; or the configuration of [the experience of] time). Instead, this book offers some mostly affectatious studies on obscure ideas. If your goal is to find a book which presents ideas as of how to explore the architecture+music marriage, I personally would recommend you look elsewhere.

Some of the projects are intriguing, granted, but perhaps I expected the kind of book which is yet to be written. In any event, this one was not worth the money.

As a collector of cat books, I had anticipated "National Geographic Cat Shots" being something special, especially with the quality of the cover photograph. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Although a good collection of photos, I felt that they didn't reflect the true nature and character of the cat.

Privateer and adventurer Martin Frobisher undertook the search for a northwestern route to Asia under orders from Queen Elizabeth I. A few days after enduring a terrifying storm in July 1576, Frobisher sighted the most easterly outlier of Arctic North America and for the first time England became aware of this vast northern region.
