Book Description

Donna Leon has topped European bestseller lists for more than a decade with a series of mysteries featuring clever Commissario Guido Brunetti. Always ready to bend the rules to uncover the threads of a crime, Brunetti manages to maintain his integrity while maneuvering through a city rife with politics, corruption, and intrigue.

In A Noble Radiance a new landowner is summoned urgently to his house not far from Venice when workmen accidentally unearth a macabre grave. The human corpse is badly decomposed, but a ring found nearby proves to be a first clue that reopens an infamous case of kidnapping involving one of Venice's most aristocratic families. Only Commissario Brunetti can unravel the clues and find his way into both the heart of patrician Venice and that of a family grieving for their abducted son.

4 out of 5 stars Consistent, intelligent mysteries.......2006-07-01

This is another of Donna Leon's wonderful Comissario Guido Brunetti mysteries set in Venice. While some of them are slightly better than others, each is a solid, pleasurable, intelligent read. And Guido is a "best of breed" police inspector with humor, a conscience, and frustration with the corruption of the ruling powers in and around Venice.

4 out of 5 stars Ken Le Huray.......2005-10-10

Donna Leon's creation of Guido Brunetti detective of Venice is one of the great figures of the genre. His family and the city of Venice are equally realisic. "A Noble Radiance" is full of the corrupt and aristocratic background of that city. The interplay of characters in the story is first class.

5 out of 5 stars A master at the top of her game - an excellent mystery.......2005-10-04

I love this series. It is set in one of the most interesting and mysterious cities in the world with a complex and equally interesting main character. The plots of each story masterfully intertwine the grit and politics of every day Venice with the day to day challenges of being a police detective. In this story, Brunetti is faced with solving the 2 year mystery of a kidnapping turned murder. Naturally, his insufferable boss, imperious Italian nobility, embarrasing police incompetence (or is it disinterest) and the grinding politics of Italian bureaucracy all challenge our hero's skills as much as the mystery itself. All of this would be forgetable if the book had been written by someone with fewer skills or a heavier hand than Ms. Leon. I especially love her dialogue. The conversations between Brunetti and his wife are tender and realistic. But I really love the way she gives voice to Guido Brunetti's inner thoughts - it makes this, and all of her books, so involving.

With so many cookie-cutter mystery series out there (many of which, I admit, I read and enjoy), it is refreshing to read a novel that is both interesting and very well written.

Note: Unlike some other mystery serials, this book stands on its own and can be read without having to have completed the prior books in the series to enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars very good writing but not a classic mystery.......2005-02-05

A Noble Radiance is the second Guido Brunetti mystery set in Venice by Donna Leon that I have read. Leon is a very good writer, and she has made an admirable character in Brunetti, but this is not a typical mystery novel of the "whodunit" variety.

The story centers upon the newly discovered body of a young nobleman who was kidnapped two years previously. After two ransom demands, the kidnappers made no further contacts with the young man's family, and so the case remained a mystery. Now with the body discovered buried on a rural farm, Brunetti of the Venice police department, reopens the case as a murder investigation.

Other than Brunetti and his family, most of the characters were not very interesting. What did hold my interest was the life and attitudes of the Venetians and how the European world of commerce works with the opening of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Bloc. The murder case was rather secondary to the actual story of the young man's family's business and not much of a puzzle. Leon's strength as a writer is to make the reader really see the story through Brunetti's eyes, which is no small feat, especially when she uses third person narration. I just wish she could give Brunetti a more complex mystery to unravel.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mystery novel!.......2004-01-01

I came across this novel purely by accident, purchased it, and finished it within 4 hours. I could not put it down. This was a very well-written mystery and I am thrilled to know there are other books about Commissario Guido Brunetti. I obviously read this slightly out of order with her other Brunetti books, but this was written with no other knowledge of the Commissario needed. The book was self-contained and was a fine read. I have already ordered the rest of her books.

The Kill Clause's opening pages will knot the stomach of even the most seasoned crime reader. U.S. Marshall Tim Rackley is expecting his daughter home for her seventh birthday party. Instead he finds a fellow cop at his door, bearing the news that little Ginny has been savagely dismembered, her remains recovered in a nearby creek. Only an hour or so later, reeling with shock and grief, Rackley learns that the perpetrator has been caught--and that some fellow cops have arranged a little one-on-one meeting for him at an isolated shack, complete with an untraceable gun. Rackley arrives, faces this monster, and...

But that would be giving too much away. Suffice it to say that this powerful opening launches a killer thriller, rich in both adrenaline-pumping action and thought-provoking issues of vigilantism, power, and the moral dilemmas of those sworn to uphold the law. Hurwitz's prose is muscular yet intelligent; he draws characters well, and he unrolls action scenes with amazing vividness (as well as treating us to lots of fascinating lore about lock picking, identity theft, and cell-phone technology). Occasionally his plot twists verge on the outlandish, and a few characters seem to exist only to speechify on a certain point of view. But these are minor flaws in this fine, intense, often un-put-downable tale. --Nicholas H. Allison

                  Book Description

One father's vow to avenge his daughter's death becomes a fight to save his own life – The Kill Clause firmly places Gregg Hurwitz in the pantheon of great thriller writers.

A riveting and explosive novel, The Kill Clause is a brilliantly inventive tour de force by a powerful new master of suspense.

Tim Rackley is a dangerous man of honour, a deputy U.S. marshal who is very good at his job – until everything he believes in is shattered by the brutal murder of his own daughter.

Betrayed by an imperfect judicial system, Rackley watches helplessly as the killer walks free on a legal technicality. Devastated, furious, and burning with a righteous need for vengeance, he is suddenly forced to explore his own deadly options – a quest that leads him into a shadowy no–man's–land between justice and the law.and into the welcoming fold of 'the Commission.'

A vigilante group made up of people like him, relentless streetwise operators who have each lost a loved one to violent crime, the Commission confronts the failings of a system that sets predators loose to hunt again, cleaning up society's 'mistakes' covertly, efficiently, and permanently. But as he is dragged deeper into a deadly morass of hidden agendas and murderous justice, Tim Rackley discovers that playing God is an excruciating and fearsome task. When his new secret life starts coming unwound at an alarming speed, he is suddenly caught in the most terrifying struggle he has ever faced – a desperate battle to save his marriage, his career, his life, his soul .and everything left that's worth fighting for.

                  5 out of 5 stars A fast read.......2007-07-24

I enjoyed this book, it was fast paced and engaging. The action scenes were top notch and Rack was a master of his tradecraft. What disappointed me was the Commission went through so much trouble to coerce Rack into working for them. Did they really need to manipulate things so much to get him to join? That required a suspension of disbelief and the fact that Rack got off on just misdemeanor charges after the whole fiasco was almost too good to be true.

I was really touched by how Ginny's death affected his and Dray's relationship.

                  5 out of 5 stars Kill Clause.......2007-05-06

Just as good as I felt it would be. Hurwitz is a wonderful storyteller and I haven't found any of his books I don't like. He has a wider variety of plots than I first thought, but the way he writes makes the books alive and the plots something to think about. He carries through the story and makes it impossible not to finish.

2 out of 5 stars Skip this One.......2006-11-07

I read a lot of thrillers and I must say I was really disappointed with this novel.

The main flaw of THE KILL CLAUSE is the remarkably weak and bland characterization. The main character, Tim Rackley, is a square-jawed action hero with very little personality. The supporting characters in this novel are equally uninteresting and two-dimensional. If there's one thing I've learned about good thriller writing, it's this: if you don't care about the characters, you won't care about the story. Since I never cared about Tim Rackley and his problems, I was never truly engaged with THE KILL CLAUSE.

The storyline of this novel deals with vigilantism, and strongly resembles the plot lines of movies such as THE STAR CHAMBER and DEATH WISH. The moral message of this book is heavy-handed and not very original. There are too many stilted conversations where characters talk like ameteur psychologists and not real people. I also found the ending of this book (including the final twist) to be pretty predictable.

Hurwitz writes good, detailed action scenes, but I personally believe there are too many of them in this novel. This book is way too long, and could have easily been 150-200 pages shorter. Hurwitz is obviously a smart guy who does a lot of research, but I think he puts too much of it on the page. Lengthy descriptions about technology and weaponry are pretty boring unless they are directly relevant to the story.

Hurwitz is obviously an intelligent writer, but I think he needs to focus more on characterization and tighten his plots. He didn't do that here, so I can't recommend this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!.......2006-08-30

US Marshal Tim Rackley and wife Andrea, lives are blown apart with news of their daughter's brutal murder. The torment they experience over the loss of their only child is escalated when the killer is set free on a technicality. The agony causes them to drift apart at a time they need each other the most and Tim is forced to cope with their loss and a decision he made to turn down an opportunity to deal with the killer when he was first captured.

Frustrated, Tim is approached by a vigilante organization called "The Commission," a group of people who lost loved ones to violent crimes and whom the system failed. The Commission needs a leader, Tim needs justice and soon finds himself on the other side of the system he once so fervently upheld. The Commission's goal: to right a wrong and eliminate the system's mistakes. Tim's angst, to forgo everything he believes in to seek his own justice. The Commission's covert missions spiral out of control and Tim discovers deadly secrets so manipulative that he must use his precision and skill to fight for everything that matters to him, and re-evaluate his own quest for vengeance.

From the opening page the characters face the unthinkable and take you through the emotional turmoil of a loss in one of the most horrible ways imaginable. This is a supernova thriller filled with gripping emotions, explosive action, and meticulous detail. The author's research is evident without sacrificing the suspense. This is a well-plotted, character driven thrill ride. Highly recommended.

Past tragedies caused by "miracle drugs" have taught the public to approach cures with caution, and vaccines, in particular, have come under public scrutiny. In The Virus and the Vaccine, journalists Debbie Bookchin and Jim Schumacher uncover the true tale of the polio vaccine and its past and present dangers. Like many medical detective stories before it, this book starts with a chilling anecdote, then flashes back to slowly set the stage for disaster. Baby boomers who only know Jonas Salk and his virus-fighting colleagues as heroes will be disturbed at how some of them downplayed concerns about a monkey virus called SV40 that was present in the polio vaccine. The links between SV40 and human cancer took a long time to define, and breakthroughs in molecular biology made the job more realistic in later decades. Nevertheless, Bookchin and Schumacher argue that a biased scientific bureaucracy in combination with a desperate public and money-hungry pharmaceutical! companies fostered the use of a vaccine that may have increased cancer risk. "The vast majority of baby boomers--almost all of whom received polio vaccine in the late 1950s and early 1960s--have potentially been exposed to the virus," they write. But baby boomers aren't the only ones at risk. The authors reveal that Lederle Laboratories continued to produce potentially contaminated oral polio vaccines well into the 1990s. Although the authors point fingers of blame at some specific targets, they carefully balance their accusations with reminders that public demands for cures must be balanced with careful assessment of new medical treatments. --Therese Littleton

                          Book Description

Jonas Salk's polio vaccine has taken on an almost legendary quality as a medical miracle, for it largely eradicated one of the most feared diseases of the 20th century. But the story of the vaccine has a dark side, one that has never been fully told before....Between 1954 and 1963, close to 98 million Americans received polio vaccinations contaminated with a carcinogenic monkey virus, now known as SV40. A concerted government effort downplayed the incident, and it was generally accepted that although oncogenic to laboratory animals, SV40 was harmless to humans. But now SV40 in showing up in human cancers, and prominent researchers are demanding a serious public health response to this forgotten polio vaccine contaminant. A gripping medical detective story, The Virus and the Vaccine raises major questions about vaccine policy.

3 out of 5 stars If You Liked This Book..........2007-09-16

If you enjoyed reading this book, I suggest you also read The River, by Edward Hooper. Hoopers book posits a similar Frankensteinesque consequence of the race for a polio vaccine: the emergence of HIV in central Africa resulting from a batch of experimental polio vaccine, created in Zaire, using infected monkey kidneys.

5 out of 5 stars And our government wants us to trust them?.......2007-02-12

This book shows just how much the corporations and even our own government do not care about you or me, they care about continuing their domination of our lives and making money.

I've likely had the polio shot that is described in this book, and you probably have too, it was around for four DECADES.

My mother fell into the years where the first horrible joke of a vaccine was first introduced in the United States by Jonas Salk, and she died from ALS in 1995. Maybe there is no connection, Lord knows there are other toxins in our world that could have been responsible, but was it their right to continue to vaccinate us with trash viruses from monkey kidneys? Is this the US or Hitler's Germany?

This book is meticulously researched and written. It's the one book I've run across on vaccines that none of the "pro-vaccine" people I've talked to have been able to debunk.

If you haven't already read this book, do so. It's scary, but I would rather know than not know.

And these are some of the same type of corporations currently pushing for legislation for the HPV vaccine to be mandatory - I don't trust them, do you?

Someone remarked in a previous review that this was a horrible mistake -- no, it wasn't. A mistake is when you shut your finger in the door and then realize how and why you did it, so that it doesn't happen again. This was calculated crime, in my opinion, by the "powers that are" on millions of Americans. They knew it was there [SV40] and they made choices to leave it there. What other viruses are in there that no one has found, or even bothered to look for?

5 out of 5 stars This Book Should Be Required Reading For ALL Doctors, Lawyers, Parents and High School Students. .......2006-05-21

The other reviews have more than expressed the high level of journalism these authors have attained. Suffice it to say they should be inundated with movie offers by now. This is indeed the most compelling read in a very long time.
It is appalling to know just how reckless (and criminal) the vaccine programs really are and how deep the disregard for the public health. I promptly sent "Virus and the Vaccine" to a friend who is a top cancer specialist, to get an outside opinion. He too was blown away, horrified and found the book a powerful read. If your here and wondering if you should get this book..YES READ THIS BOOK. You will not regret it.
It is my opinion that the authors have done a great service to this country (and humanity) by dedicating their talents and time to uncovering this outrageous tale of woe. A Nobel Prize might just be in order! I am buying this book in lots, and sending copies to the most influential people I know (and my family). Bravo! S.A. Sarnoff, Founder & Pres. 4 out of 5 stars The Virus and the Vaccine.......2006-03-25

This book is a frightening expose of the potential damage done to millions of unsuspecting Americans who were receiptents of polio vaccines that may have been carelessly contaminated with monkey virus that somehow eluded the best intended manufacturing processes of that day.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning for themselves whether vaccines may have caused more harm than good over decades of use. Let us hope the authors are wrong, because if they are right, the harm done will be uncomprehensible.

I purchased the autumn book and really enjoyed it, so I ordered Christmas Joy. I was tad disappointed to see this was such a small and slender volume. It has the same cute recipes and suggestions but fewer of them. It is also fairly short- only 46 pages. I read it in about 15 minutes.

Overalll, a cute book, but I was expecting more.

This is a CLASSIC reference book on Revolutionary War artifacts!
This one first came out around the time of the bicentennial, and has set the standard from day one. With photographs of original (and in some cases, excavated) and reproduction equipment, this book is a gold mine of information. Where photographs are not available, black and white line drawings by George Woodbridge fill the gap. Woodbridge is one of the BEST illustrators of military subject matter. He captures the details that matter.
Members of the Brigade of the American Revolution were used to further display everyday items used by 18th century soldiers. Museum curators, reenactors, collectors, illustrators and makers of reproduction equipment MUST HAVE THIS BOOK on their shelves.

George C. Neumann and Frank J. Kravic have really done it this time. Hands down this is the best book written on artifacts of the American Revolution. From A to Z you can look up nearly anything that was used in the War For Independence. Great for amateurs and pros alike it is an indispensable reference tool especially with museums and private collections. Very popular with online auctions as this book is referred to often. Great photographs that are clear with a brief description of every item. Some of these artifacts are now on display at Valley Forge. For collectors and historians alike this work is unparalleled and for over 20 years has been the "bible" for collecting artifacts of the American Revolution. No other work has come close. Highly recommended.

If you love making baskets, or just enjoy looking at them or maybe even collecting them, then this book is a must have book. Law and Taylor have put together the definative book on white oak basket making ( as well as some baskets of other materials). For the accomplished basket maker the photographs and illustrations can serve as inspiration as well as pattern. Reading this book will make you want to grab your ax and head for the woods, and if that isn't possible you will want to get to your local basketry material supplier as soon as possible. This is the best book of its kind that I have seen, the perfect blend of art and history.

The Chicago Bungalow is more than a housing style indigenous to the city. It epitomizes Chicago's work ethic and its rewards for successive waves of ethnic newcomers to the city since the early 20th century. In this book, the Chicago Architecture Foundation interprets both the design and the meaning of these homes, in keeping with CAF's mission to raise awareness of Chicago's architectural legacy. ÝÝAfter 1915, new neighborhoods appeared across the prairie. The Chicago-style bungalow came to both dominate and symbolize these areas. A one and one-half story single-family freestanding home, it included such conveniences as electricity, indoor plumbing, and central heat. Chicagoans built some 80,000 bungalows. Another 20,000 were built in suburban Cook County. Nearly every ethnic and racial group in the area has made its way at one time or another to the Bungalow Belt. Today the Bungalow Belt includes white ethnic, African American, Latino, and Asian families. ÝÝ

The book wasn't what I expected from a book with this title. But, I'm glad someone wrote it and wished they had focused more on the architecture, the many styles, and the seemingly endless stained glass designs in the front windows of the fancier bungalows. Overall it was very nice to see and a decent read. I had lived in one on a corner lot and appreciated the author's discussion of face brick, and other details on corner houses.

"The Chicago Bungalow" is a collection of essays created as a companion volume to a Chicago Architectural Foundation exhibition staged in connection with the City's Historic Chicago Bungalow Initiative, which provides financing and other incentives to help bungalow owners improve and maintain their homes and communities. To this day, the bungalows themselves are an important part of Chicago's architectural heritage and the neighborhoods that grew up around them are part of what makes Chicago such a liveable city.

Although sponsored by an architectural organization, this book emphasizes social history rather than aesthetic appreciation. There is one brief essay on the characteristics of the bungalow (i.e., what is a bungalow and what, if anything, sets Chicago bungalows apart from those found in other areas of the country), but most of the rest of the text addresses how the various areas were developed by real estate tycoons and others, how bungalows were built and financed, how the modern conveniences they contained affected the lives of women, which social groups bought bungalows (interestingly, the non-Chicago authors seem to think these were middle class neighborhoods, while the Chicago authors mostly characterize them as working class), the social organizations of one bungalow community (Portage Park), and how neighborhoods have changed (primarily racially) over the years. (The latter essay mostly glosses over Chicago's sad history of segregation, racism, block busting and white flight.) I found the information on the "own your own home" movement (a relatively recent part of the American dream) and on the standardization of plumbing fixtures and non-standarization of wood trim particularly interesting. Black-and-white pictures throughout the book more or less illustrate the text (sometimes the connection is not obvious) and there is a 16-page section of color photos illustrating the diversity of forms and some of the decorative features of Chicago bungalows.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the origins of this housing form and how it affected the lives of working class Chicagoans. If your interest is confined to the aesthetic aspects of bungalows, however, this will not add much to what you already know.

Nice book on Chicago's own bungalow tradition. Nice pictures of not only classic Chicago bungalows, but of many of it's inhabitants in the great Chicago Bungalow Belt. Only wish the book was longer and had more color photos, but it does show examples of my favorite part of the Chicago bungalows from the 1920's, art glass. They will NEVER build houses like these again. Attention to the Southside as well as the Northside belts. Recommended reading for us lay people who love Chicago's unique brick bungalows.

                                          Book Description

It's hard to overestimate the complexity of the factors that dictate something as simple as where, and in what sorts of structures, people live. Urban planning, business, labor, ethnicity, architecture—each influences the types of structures people live in, and the sorts of lives they lead within them.

Joseph C. Bigott takes on all of these fields in From Cottage to Bungalow, a sophisticated study of domestic structures and ethnic working-class neighborhoods in Chicago during the critical period of 1869 to 1929, when the city attracted huge numbers of immigrants. Exploring the meaning of home ownership in this context, Bigott develops two case studies that combine the intimate lives of ordinary people (primarily in Chicago's Polish and German communities) with broad analysis of everything from real estate markets to the very carpentry practices used to construct houses. His progressive methods and the novel conclusions they support chronicle not only the history of housing in Chicago, but also the organizations of people's lives, and the ways in which housing has affected notions of who is—and who is not—a worthy American citizen.

I started genealogy research for our family this summer. Our ancestors hail from the Hammond and West Hammond areas featured in the book. The author does far more than merely focusing on the housing designs. He provides an interesting look back at the social, political, and economical climate the immigrants / early settlers lived in. The Notes section is packed with references and has proved to be invaluable as I continue my family history and local history research. I can only hope the author chooses to pick up where this book left off.

Poignant autobiographical book by former soap star/Emmy nominated actress Sharon Gabet (Raven on The Edge of Night, One Life to Live, Another World). Personal stories include her Indiana background, life as a soap star in New York, and the birth of her autistic child that changed her life. Big families, making it in New York, motherhood, psychotherapy, angels, fairies, autism, past lives and future potentials are the backdrop through which her wisdom emerges. An inspirational and fascinating read.

From The Raven To The Dove is an autobiography by an actress who portrayed Raven Whitney on the soap opera Edge of Night provides plenty of involving insights that go beyond the usual actress' focus on the entertainment world to discuss her personal transformation and union with God. Angelic messages, family connections to God, and spiritual insights are the driving force of her coverage.

Half expecting just another celebrity-turned-writer voyage into mediocrity, imagine my surprise when I found I could not put this book down, literally, until I had read it through. Witty, funny and profound: Ms Gabet's 'joie de vivre' is intoxicating; her writing is superb. I highly recommend this one, not just for the good read, but for the life lessons Sharon unveils to her readers with the utmost candor and compassion.
