5 out of 5 stars Delightful, charming & endearing.......2007-02-24

Fannie Flagg has written a "Christmas" novel that provides year-round enjoyment. Down-home, Southern hospitality and humor is at its best when Fannie sets it on paper. I was so delighted with "A Redbird Christmas" that I read it twice... once on my own and once aloud to a dear friend with vision impairments. I might just have to find someone else to read it to, because part of the magic of this book is sharing it with someone special.

Book Description

A long-awaited package has finally arrived at the fortified estate of billionaire sociopath Artemus Bourne. But instead of containing the anticipated biological nightmare one of his offshore firms created, inside are three severed human heads . . .

An act of vengeance by a man long thought dead has set in motion a drama too terrifying to imagine -- one that will ensnare ex-government assassin Paul Bannerman and his "ghosts," operatives assumed dead but actually hiding in suburban Connecticut from their dark and bloody pasts. For Bannerman and his people cannot sit idly by as a maniac who hungers for ultimate power -- and possesses the wealth and weapons to achieve his terrible aims -- obliterates the lives of the innocent. But the clock is ticking rapidly down to Armageddon. And if he makes one wrong move, everything that breathes in Bannerman's world will die.

5 out of 5 stars Not only a page turning thriller but a possible future scenario.......2006-03-28

This is a highly recommended novel that I found hard to put down - definitely a page turner! As in Maxim's other novels, events of today's culture are taken and woven into a excellent believable story. If the facts of this story can be taken at all as creditable, the bad guys don't even have to spread their virus' in the U.S.: assuming the incubation period prior to showing symptoms of these virus' is 3 to 5 days, a valid sceneario could consider infecting people (even without their knowledge) in another country then using scheduled airline flights move these infected carriers into population centers such as London, Paris, Geneva, New York, San Francisco, Tokoyo, or where ever international flights land. The other side of the world is ONLY 23 hours away by air travel! Scary Huh!! All of Maxim's books are worthy of being read and enjoyed!

5 out of 5 stars These ghosts are very real.......2005-07-15

I picked up a copy Bannerman's Ghost in an airport bookstore when faced with an unexpected flight delay. I had previously read Maxim's Whistler's Angel and had wanted to go back to read the Bannerman series. With the early books not available at the moment, I decided to start at the end of the series with Bannerman's Ghosts. Although I suspect that the book would have been better if I was more familiar with some of the characters that clearly had been part of Maxim's previous works, Bannerman's Ghosts was still a great story - fully capable to standing on its own. Maxim spins an intriguing story, effectively bouncing back between the present and the past while building to an exciting climax. This is a fast read that will not disappoint. I will now absolutely need to go back to start at the beginning of the Bannerman series and move forward.

4 out of 5 stars Anxiously waiting............2005-01-11

I enjoyed "Bannerman's Ghost" as I have enjoyed all of Maxim's books, but I gave it only 4 stars because I found it hard to reconcile Martin Kessler's death with his resurection in this book. I know that we never "saw" the body in "Haven," but Kessler was exposed for a prolonged period to deadly radiation. His prospects did not look good.
Putting that aside, and accepting that he did survive, I thoroughly enjoyed the story.
My only real complaint is this: at the time of this writing it has been nearly two years since "Bannerman's Ghost" was released. John Maxim, I am anxiously waiting for your next book.

3 out of 5 stars Too much prologue.......2004-08-28

When the action happens, it works, but too much of the book is review of the characters and updates on their personal lives.

4 out of 5 stars Bannerman Returns!.......2004-04-30

Bannerman has returned to the scene to battle a new villain. He is still located in the state of Conneticutt with his band of

    BEYOND THE SEA OF DREAMS
Life had never been kind to Joe and Marge. Now, according to Throckmorton P. Ruddygore--a stranger who met them on a road that wasn't there--they were due to die in nineteen minutes. But across the Sea of Dreams lay a new and perhaps better life, in a place where fairies danced by moonlight. Joe could become a mighty-thewed barbarian warrior. Marge could be beautiful and find her magical self.
It was just as Ruddygore had promised, plus a great deal more. For this was a world where Hell still strove to win its ancient war, where demon princes sent men into battles of dark magic, and where Joe and Marge must somehow help prevent the coming of Armageddon!

Jack L. Chalker is best known for his "Lost Souls," series but "River of the Dancing Gods," is one of my favorite fantasy novels. Imagine on your worst day finding a new world full of adventure. That's how the story begins for Joe and Marge.

4 out of 5 stars Are we living someone else's dream?.......2004-07-04

Have you ever wanted to just BE in another world or universe? All the wonderful fantasy books have to come from somewhere. What if they actually happened somewhere. That is what this book is about. This is the first book in a wonderful series. Maybe we can just get away from it all even if it is by reading this book. This is an easy feel good book. It is a little predictable in the main plot twists but it is the little things that keep you on your toes. This book is easily read in one or two sittings on a weekend. When you need an outlet to a new land pick this up and continue with the rest of the series.

      4 out of 5 stars Good info.......2007-05-14

Book had some good info that I have heard before, but it was good to get the ideas back into the head. Dragon and wizard theory was good in parts. But best point is to tackle the problems that you have control over, and let go of the the things you can't control.

5 out of 5 stars The Anxiety Cure: An Eight Step Program for Getting Well.......2005-09-19

Excellent self help-I've also bought this for two relatives.
      Highly recommend this.

      2 out of 5 stars Narrow Focus.......2005-03-20

This book is not about curing anxiety, it is about curing phobias. It does not address any other forms of anxiety, and says nearly nothing about GAD- generalized Anxiety Disorder. If you are starting from absolute ignorance about phobias, agoraphobia or current treatments, it might be worth while as a starting point. If you suffer from anxiety which does not present as a phobia or panic attack, there is little here for you. The advice, in summary, is to expose yourself to your fears and get over it. Kinda simple.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest & fastest working book to reduce or stop anxiety!.......2003-07-17

This book is much faster than regular therapy, and I am the type of person who likes fast results and I will work hard to get them. I, like thousands of others, suffer with some anxieties. This program is loaded with wonderful tips and tools in combating anxiety, and I have learned extra tools that I will incorporate into my own lifelong recovery system. I liked the eight-step program that was used and I liked the "family" kind of feel it gave me when reading it. In the future, I will be recommending this book to people who think they may have a problem with anxiety or if they are just inquiring about it.

5 out of 5 stars You owe it to yourself.......2001-10-25

This book has helped immensely with my anxiety disorder. When it first hit me I had no idea what was happening. If I did not acquire the book and follow the steps outlined in it, I would be incapacitated by now. I confronted the fear--it was tough--but succeeded and am so much better off because of it. I highly recommend this book for anyone who suffers from any kind of anxiety disorder.

        Book Description

Though Japan today has become one of the world's most industrialized, mechanized, and computerized nations, it still boasts one of the world's richest and most fascinating ceramic traditions.

Two of the country's most remarkable styles of pottery are Shino and Oribe, both originating in ancient Mino Province (modern-day Gifu Prefecture) from the time of Japan's artistic "renaissance" in the late sixteenth century.

Oribe ware is one of the most startling and innovative expressions not only of this period but of all Japanese pottery. In a departure from the more refined tea ceremony utensils that represent the meditative aspect of the ceremony, Oribe ware has a more earthy feel, with its layering of naturally
occurring colors: a piece might be made of red and white clay, with green glaze over the white portion, and line decorations done in iron over a coat of white slip on the red part. This ware is named for Furuta Oribe, who in his time was the undisputed master of the tea ceremony and who, it is said,
commissioned certain kilns to make these pots after his own designs.

Likewise, the tea ceremony ware known as Shino is widely considered to have its own unparalleled kind of beauty. With its thick, white, feldspathic glaze and stylized but seemingly spontaneous decoration in iron underglaze, it has an unmistakable sense of softness and naturalness.

Both Shino and Oribe are still being made today, but in many cases it is the older examples that are most striking. Classic Stoneware of Japan brings together these early great pieces with important newer work, in 150 color photographs, and outlines each ware in informative essays - written by two
noted authorities - on each tradition's history and techniques.

Classic Stoneware of Japan offers a comprehensive visual survey and a basic understanding of these traditions' glazes, processes, shapes and decoration. The reader comes away with a clear idea of the essence of these wares and an ability to instantly recognize either. It will be invaluable for
anyone interested in pottery, design or art.

Classic Stoneware of Japan is the combined edition of two earlier volumes, Shino and Oribe, originally published independently in the series Famous Ceramics of Japan. This new, combined edition is a fascinating guide to these enduring and vital art forms.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic book, classic subject.......2003-04-17

Say "stoneware" to anyone fond of traditional Japanese culture and most will respond "raku." Indeed, those loosely-shapen dark wonders of the low-fire kiln are the supercondensed span of an entire culture in an object you can hold. Yet in an almost artless preoccupation with doing just the opposite, two traditions expressing the same qualities of the tea ceremony using entirely materials and effect came into existence and rapidly became popular: Shino and Oribe ware. Both originated during Japan's artistic renaissance of the late sixteenth century (which interestingly was coterminus with the Europeam Renaissance beyond Italy, and just as tumultuous).

The tea ceremony's origins came in a gentler time, the Muromachi. It was as if the mix of vigor and experience hung in the air like a dust mote after a peaceful zephyr, the same way that war is in the air when come the winds of change. Though several theories claim to be the actual inspiration, the era is more definite. A 1932 chronicle relates, "In the first month of 1574, Kagemitsu, third son of Kageharu of the thirteenth generation after the first Seto potter Kato Kagemasa, moved to Akatsu. By virtue of a tea jar that he presented to Lord Oda Nobunaga, the latter formally recognized him as a retainer. Kakemitsu subsequently left Seto and moved to Kujiri, in Mino, in 1583. There . . . he continued working as a potter."

To diehard raku buffs, Shino ware must have seemed a bit overadorned, fussy perhaps. There are geometrics, abstracts, and representations of familiar fare such as birds, grasses, plus the occasional poem such as:

        The inner essence
Of the fence of deutzia flowers
        In a mountain village:
The feeling of treading a road
        Covered with freshly fallen snow.

The authors convey all this with a mix of the poet and the historian. Here is an extended passage that carries the aroma of the whole text:

"To me [Shino ware's] charm lies in the feel of its surface and the mellow luster that accords so well with that surface. And there is the straightforward beauty of the pictures decorating Shino ware. The overall effect is intoxicating.
"Shino pictures are drawn with lively lines depicting the everyday scenery surrounding the potters-the bridges over the streams at Kuguri, a cypress fence and dew-covered path leading to its brushwood gate, a grove of trees in flower, the trees and grasses just outside the window, even the mountain road they traveled day after day.
"Such was the aesthetic of the Momoyama period in general. But the single tree, the few blades of grass these artists sketched are somehow pleasing because the designs pulse with life, the brushwork is clean and bold.
"The white of Shino can be compared to the first snow of the season, or to the last traces of the winter snow, which the warm spring winds are erasing as the bush warbler's first song rings out. Shino's white surface is soft like a mother's breast; it brings back memories of childhood.

"Shino white is tidiness itself. And on that white the potters painted designs with an iron glaze made of oni-ita, a red clay rich in iron and manganese and abundant in the Seto region. The effect of flame in the kiln added distinctive fire marks. Shino is an elusive ware, capable of infinite transformations.
"The Shino potters thickly applied their glaze, which they made by carefully grinding feldspar and refining it in water. To this they added their own secret proportion of ash. Then, after offering sake and prayers to the gods of the kiln, and ritually scattering salt to purify the area, they entrusted their pieces to the fire."

In the depths of the heart
        From which pottery springs
        Flows a crystal clear stream
        Reflecting nearby mountains.
        -- Rosanjin Kitaoji

The above is but the glaze. To get the pot you must get the book. Be sure to look at pictures 2 and 3 on page 54: This seemingly unassuming Shino teabowl is considered the finest teabowl in existence.

Alas, or perhaps huzzah, styles last not long. The next innovation in Japanese teaware can be directly traced to a single man, Furuta Oribe, and as changes in teacups go, his was a doozy.

Japan in Oribe's time was a chessboard of warlords incessantly raiding each other for fun and profit. Oribe, among other things, also was a distinguished general. His tastes ran to the "robust, generous, vigorous, and distorted in shape." He introduce these qualities to the entire tea ceremony-most notably by making it part of a dinner event with a large number of others, all lubricated as much by saké as by tea. Hence Oribe commissioned not only tea ware but serving and dining dishes, saké ware, unusual geometrics, and heavy, dripping glazes the tea ceremony's predecessors would have deemed ghastly. This was not very Zen. On the other hand, Oribe's shaking up the establishment led directly to a great flowering of ceramics. Eventually more subtle tastes tamed down the founder's style-a process that can be seen vividly in the many illustrations of Oribe ware-and Oribe's great-great-great grandchildren's great grandchildren still being made today.

Alas, this review is all too brief. To sum the book in PR blurb terms, "Classic Stoneware of Japan: Shino and Oribe" is a comprehensive visual survey and text explication of the two traditions' glazes, processes, shapes, and decoration. You come away with a clear idea of the essence of these wares and with half an eye you can come to expertly recognize either. The detail is exhaustive given its scant 42 pages of text. Potters will celebrate it. Everyone else will learn from it. No one is likely to forget it.

        2 out of 5 stars Too Basic.......2002-10-07

The author is very detail oriented and explains each technique well. However, there are no unique or inspiring examples. They are extremely common and plain. This book is definitely not for the artsy and creative person looking for that one new and inspiring method to express and create. I want to pack it up and ship it right back.

5 out of 5 stars Tips on using applique, embroidery, and beading.......2002-07-11

"Style, not shtick. Wit, not bombast." That's the way Bob Costas describes longtime San Francisco Giants broadcaster Hank Greenwald's on-air voice in his foreword to Greenwald's acerbically free-wheeling look back at his years in the booth. It's a description that also goes a long way toward characterizing the man and his memoir. Greenwald, now retired from the grind of day-to-day game-calling, was a rarity on the air. He not only knew how to make a game come alive, but also how to liven up the pauses in action with a genuine humor that was funny but not self-serving, self-referential, or worse, self-reverential. Not surprisingly, This Copyrighted Broadcast reflects that balancing act: it's smart in its look at the state of the game, on and particularly off the field (to wit: "If there's one thing owners don't accept, it's blame. They don't have to, they're owners"; "What a shame baseball is so insecure about itself"), it's funny, it's honest (wait till you see what Greenwald has to say about Barry Bonds), it's daring in what it reveals about broadcasting and some of the absurdities of being a ball club's paid mouthpiece--unless you're an institution like Harry Caray, you don't always get to call it like you see it--and it's poignant in its revelations about family, especially concerning Greenwald's remarkable relationship with a daughter who has Down's Syndrome. But mostly, it's a collection of terrific anecdotes from a man who knows how to tells stories, move things along, and amuse with skill and absolute timing. This is, after all, the announcer who, when told by a producer to shorten his sign-on of a game from Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, looked directly into the camera and bid fans a good evening from Two Rivers Stadium. --Jeff Silverman

5 out of 5 stars I remember Hank from the mid 80's and the Giant's broadcasts. None better........2006-10-10

I had been a Cincinnati fan for years when I moved to the bay area. So it was natural to gravitate towards the Giants. As I recall they had a terrible team when I started listening (including the hilarious Crazy Crab ) during 1984.

I haven't started the book yet but I can't wait. Hank was simply one of the cleverest announcers I've ever heard. I think anyone who spent any time listening to him and his excellent sense of humor will always know they aren't getting all they could out of a broadcast by any other announcer. (Even those supposedly brilliant "Hall of Famers" who may have announced for the Reds).

Just reading some of the excerpts from the book brought his brilliantly cagey style back to mind.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for the memories Hank................2003-11-26

I am a lifelong Giants fan and remember listening to Hank as a kid. His wonderful voice, and passion for the game motivated me to buy his book and I was not disappointed. The stories he told brought back so many memories of my childhood, and some wonderful insight as well. I actually knew the disclaimer word for word and could do it in his voice.

Readers will be particularly touched with the chapter on his daughter who was born with Down Syndrome.

Way to go Hank, and thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories. (Even freezing at Candlestick)

5 out of 5 stars This book is like turning Hank on the radio!.......2002-05-04

Those that remember Hank Greenwald from his days as a Warriors and Giants broadcaster will enjoy his book tremendously. You can quickly tell that he deals with the written word as well as he did with the spoken word. The first night I read the book, I stayed up until 4 a.m. reading. There are a multitude of subjects he covers, all with wit, charm and personality. He not only has in-depth writing of his early years at Syracuse University and the East, but also his family, life in Australia, study of General MacArthur, the later years in the Bay Area with both the Warriors and Giants, and some general feelings about baseball. His dry wit, so common on his broadcasts, is quite evident throughout the book and may only be matched by his son Doug, now doing baseball in California. Greenwald retired from baseball broadcasting in 1996, to the chagrin of many, and now enjoys retirement life after a long and illustrious career. For anyone who listened to Hank on KNBR radio over the years, or for those who enjoy reading about sports broadcasters in general, this book is truly outstanding reading.

4 out of 5 stars Not THAT dirty!.......2000-07-30

If you like sports and are a Bay Area native, you have to read this book. Hank does a comical, complete review of early days with the Warriors and of course, the Men in Black (not the Raiders). He is really funny and a down to earth serious person as well.

Having discovered that the book had been banned, I naturally wanted to read it more, wondering what he could have said to anger the team's management that he faithfully and honestly served for all those years. Turns out it wasn't THAT much of a big deal. Just a few lines here and there. But it sure makes the Giants ownership group, at least half of it, sound like sourpusses, as well as a few others.

But Hank is not the type to dwell on negatives. He is far too funny, plus he and his wife have raised 2 children, which make you able to separate the important things from the nonsense real quick.

I am happy that I got to listen to Hank all those years of my youth, but even more happy for Hank that he seems to be living life on his terms. It is the gift that Bay Area sports fans would want for somebody like him after all that he has given us.

Buy it, read it, pass it to a friend. Hank, if you're reading this, we miss you.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff from Hank.......2000-07-09

As somebody who grew up in the Bay Area listening to Hank, this book was a nice re-acquaintance with one of the friendliest, most genuine voices in baseball. This book has plenty of chuckles and it makes you feel like you know a little bit more about somebody who most Giant fans regard as a friend.
