4 out of 5 stars Worth the Read...for several reasons.......2006-07-11

I must disagree with "disappointed's" review. I have MS, the experiences in this book are accurate. While MSer's experience different symptoms and progession of the disease, much of what the author writes about is very real to the those who are dx's and learning to live with a chronic illness. I would encourage this as a book for those who HAVE MS and for those who want to understand MS. The 'drug' use is very real, Montel Williams who has MS is a very vocal advocate for the use of 'recreational drugs' for symptom relief, this is not for me, but the debate is very real. People with MS will get what they need out of the books, those looking for an understanding of the disease should read it with an open mind.(very much a problem with people who don't understand the disease). THE OTHER BENEFIT of the book is the characters struggle w/faith, this was a very unexpected addition to the meaning of the book, that I found personally rewarding. I gave the book a 4(not a five) because I felt she fell into a few "danielle steel" moments with her overly flowerly descriptions of the romance, I found myself thinking 'keep it real and raw' like the rest of the book, get away from the the wordy romance.(oh, by the way I have wonderful marriage too) I am not a STeel fan at all...HOWEVER, it is still very much worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars insightful inspirational character study .......2006-02-25

Michael and Elizabeth Whittaker are a loving well-balanced couple fluid like Astaire and Rogers in all they do. However, without warning, Elizabeth begins to become uncoordinated. Concerned they have her checked out fearing a brain tumor. Though not that, both are stunned when Dr. Jones informs them she suffers from multiple sclerosis. Their harmonious world will never be the same.

Her family and friends react with horror only adding to Elizabeth's sudden feeling of isolation from the secure world she knew. Her mom is over the edge; her best friend has no idea how to act with her; and her loving spouse fears leaving her on her own. Needing understanding not trepidation, Elizbath joins the Northern Neck Neuromuscular Support Group, but some members turn to marijuana for healing and pain relief. Instead Elizabeth turns to Father Wells who advices her to seek the sun where sundogs provide halos of hope when things seem it's darkest.

This insightful inspirational character study will grip the audience from the moment that the heroine begins to comprehend that she has more than just an illness to battle; as caring relatives and buddies drive her up a wall. Elizabeth's search for solace goes through the five steps of grief as she struggles spiritually as much as emotionally especially as her body fails her. Though the realistic portrayal that makes this a strong novel at times slows down the pacing, Sharon Baldacci, an MS sufferer, provides a wonderful tale of a courageous woman.

4 out of 5 stars Hope for the hurting.......2004-11-30

What a book to put in doctors' offices for those suffering with pain! No, it's not a 'feel good' book - but pain isn't 'feel good'. I have to admit that I know the author slightly, as we all live on the Northern Neck of Virginia where you can't 'not know someone'. But this woman is a true hero, and I'm sending a copy to my adult son who lives with pain. We are not talking about a 'good read' here, we are talking about a truly useful and inspiring book. Oh, and yes, my child gets relief from marijuana that he can't get from any other (government approved) drug.

5 out of 5 stars A bit thick, but well-worth the time to read!.......2004-09-07

Elizabeth Whittaker has suddenly developed some mysterious symptoms that have her husband and doctors baffled. Afraid of a brain tumor, they run test after test, relieved to find out that a tumor isn't what is causing her problems. Something incurable is. Her husband, Michael is devastated to learn his wife has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Beautiful, talented Elizabeth laughs the diagnosis off. She'll be fine. Okay, she has a few problems, but they'll go away. She doesn't seem to understand why everyone is so concerned. Her daughter has just left to attend college, now Elizabeth's life is ahead of her.

Once the truth sinks in, the shock is total and the fear overwhelming. Now, Elizabeth must travel down a road she would have never chosen to travel if given a choice. Facing tough physical, emotional and spiritual challenges, Elizabeth searches for relief by making some decisions-and the decision she makes threatens everything she holds dear.

A SUNDOG MOMENT is a beautiful first book written by a talented author. Elizabeth and Michael are a very realistic couple, in love with each other, even after years together. I was saddened by Elizabeth's diagnosis, and hoped the doctors would be wrong.

A SUNDOG MOMENT is a bit thick, but well-worth the time to read. The story is beautiful, told with humor mixed with the truth. Even when the night seems the darkest, God doesn't let you walk the path alone. I couldn't read this book in one sitting, I had to pick it up and read some, then put it down and think about what I read. This book is probably best read in small doses, so you can consider everything.

In this ninth book in the "witty"* series, Desiree discovers that by ignoring her answering machine messages, she missed a desperate call from a woman who is now dead. So begins the latest investigation for plump P.I. Desiree Shapiro....

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too much, talk, too boring.......2002-04-11

I have read all Desiree Shapiro books by Selma and each one gets worse. I was hoping that by reading another one it would keep my interest but... I don't care what Desiree looks like or if she is plump or etc., she cannot keep a thought by which you can follow what is happening after a murder has been committed and Desiree is hired to solve it. How does she have time to solve anything when her life is in turmoil and her co-worker, niece and the neighbors are running (ruining) her life. There doesn't seem to be any story line to follow and after about 25 pages you just give up and get rid of the book. I kept hoping the stories would change but they didn't.

1 out of 5 stars This book can upset your brain.......2001-09-30

Usually I love Desiree Shapiro and the methods she uses to solve a crime but this book seemed unorganized and I found myself not even caring what the outcome was. There were side stories about Ellen picking out a wedding dress and somebody giving a party but this was not one of Selma Eichler's best.
    Don't waste your time.

1 out of 5 stars Talk, Talk, Talk.......2001-06-23

I was amazed to see that this person has written more than one book. This is the most boring mystery I have ever read. Not only do I not care about the lead, I don't care why the woman was murdered or anything else. The book is too talk-y. Shut up!

3 out of 5 stars Not the fairest of them all..........2001-03-26

Desiree Shapiro is a heroine who is usually good for a laugh. She's human, funny, and fallible, and her perspective on the world makes her adventures quite delightful.

However, "Murder Can Upset Your Mother" is probably the weakest in this series of six novels by Selma Eichler. The plot seems quite contrived, and filled with frustratingly false diversions--wedding dresses, food poisonings, and other events which don't contribute to either plot or characterization.

The ending, too, is formulaic: we knew who the murderer was, we even knew Desiree was going to catch him, and it was only a quirk of fate and a little sleight of handedness that the drugstore clerk identified the purchaser of the poison as quickly as she did. And then, to add insult to injury, Eichler adds nothing less than a recipe for eggplant parmigiana. It's not even a particularly distinguished recipe, for heaven's sake...but it is in keeping with the mediocrity of the novel.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-03-21

I've been a big fan of the Desiree Shapiro series, but this book fell really flat for me.

The one fact Desiree recalled which led to her conclusion of "whodunnit" didn't seem like a big enough deal to me that it should've convinced her of the person's guilt with such conviction, based on all the other evidence she'd gathered. The way she went about setting out to prove the person's guilt was extremely contrived, and the ending much too convenient and uneventful for this type of book.

I also didn't understand why the reader seemed to be getting teased with other potential subplots that led absolutely nowhere. Desiree's desire to see all she could of the opulent Manhattan residences she was visiting, Jackie's food poisoning, Pat's birthday party and Ellen's trip to the bridal shop in New Jersey served no purpose to the story whatsoever, and seemed like they just occurred to fill pages.

An utter disappointment from a usually stellar author. I hope this isn't a trend, but rather just a bad writing day.

2 out of 5 stars Beware the End.......2005-04-21

I would've given this book 4 out of 5 stars, but I just got to the ending. Obviously, the ending does not bother other people who made a review, but nevertheless I know I would've liked to have known about it before I read it (so I wouldn't have wasted my time, or at least had the appropiate acceptance).

Don't worry about spoilers, as there are very few to worry about and the problem is that the story itself never reveals what happens in regards to what I'm about to point out.

The ending simply fades out after the final climatic battle, with SEVERAL unanswered questions.

This includes, but is not limited to, the outcome of NuGene and the dragon Lofwyr, the fate of a few lesser characters, romantic tensions, and how (if) the team survived the retaliation sure to come from the mafia, Yaks, and Lone Star. I would think that the Tir (or at least capable forces from within it) would still wanna wipe them out, too, out of pride/rep if nothing else.

Most (and worst) of all, we do not find out the fate of Emma, the baby of a shadowrunner. The baby has come into the possession of rich corporate (and surprisingly decent) owners but is the actual child of the main character. We do not know if he takes the child (and if so, the shockwaves this would create with the public and possibly even the Tir), and how he changes his life as a result. Or if he leaves his daughter in the capable hands of the wealthy couple who have come to really love her, instead. I found this being left unresolved downright unbelievable, given how it was so crucial to the plot and the primary character motivation in the last half of the story. That I even give this book 2 stars is a testament to how good I think the rest of the book is, as if it weren't that good I would have to give it 1 or 0 stars.

Btw, the events around the main character dealing with his dead love and lost child is just one aspect where the main character is emotional. Love, guilt, and vengeance (and more) all played no small part in this story.

Finally, if just a lesser point, I never did see the reason why Archangel was so terrified of the Tir. There was obviously a story there and I expected to learn about it. There were times I read it late at night and there's a slight possibility that I somehow missed this (but given other aspects of the book, I doubt it). But if this book (or another one) DOES explain this, would you be so kind as to email me and tell me or at least where I could find it? Thanx

      Jane

      5 out of 5 stars Quality Shadowrun.......2003-06-23

Ignore naysayers. This was one of the best shadowrun books I've ever read.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......1999-07-31

I must say I enjoyed this book more than any other novel of series. It's well written, intelligent, serious, and to a certain degre, more realistic (M. Odom has done quiet a good job creating a complex plot, while transposing the Shadowrun's world on top in a credible and detailed way) than what I have seen from others. Sure for some this may be lacking in the emotional departement and his characters may seem too cold, but that's what we are suppose to like in the universe of Shadowrun. Personally, I think emotions should be a bit restraint in a Shadowrun novel. Face it, if every time skater kills someone, he's suppose to weep...

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......1999-06-19

I enjoyed this book quite a bit compared to most of the books that have come from FASA. I appreciated that level of ingenuity and realism (for the genre) in the novel, especially compared to The Dragonheart Saga (which was good, but...). Definitely worth five stars. I just wish I could say the same for Odom's latest Shadowrun book.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......1999-03-22

This story is a bad a** story. A story that would rival the "Dragon Heart" saga.

          Book Description

Five years ago Jane Stern was a walking encyclopedia of panic attacks, depression, and hypochondria. Her marriage of more than thirty years was suffering, and she was virtually immobilized by fear and anxiety. As the daughter of parents who both died before she was thirty, Stern was terrified of illness and death, and despite the fact that her acclaimed career as a food and travel writer required her to spend a great deal of time on airplanes, she suffered from a persistent fear of flying and severe claustrophobia. But a strange thing happened one day on a plane that was grounded at the Minneapolis airport for six horrible, foodless, airless hours. A young man on a trip with his classmates suddenly became dizzy and pale because he hadn’t eaten in many hours, and there was no food left on the plane. Without thinking about it, Jane gave him the candy bar that she had in her purse. A short time later the color had returned to his cheeks, the boy was laughing again with his friends, and Jane realized that this one small act of kindness—helping another person who was suffering—had provided her with comfort and a sense of well-being.

It was shortly thereafter that this fifty-two-year-old writer decided to become an emergency medical technician, eventually coming to be known as Ambulance Girl. Stern tells her story with great humor and poignancy, creating a wonderful portrait of a middle-aged, Woody Allen–ish woman who was “deeply and neurotically terrified of sick and dead people,” but who went out into the world to save other people’s lives as a way of saving her own. Her story begins with the boot camp of EMT training: 140 hours at the hands of a dour ex-marine who took delight in presenting a veritable parade of amputations, hideous deformities, and gross disasters. Jane—overweight and badly out of shape—had to surmount physical challenges like carrying a 250-pound man seated in a chair down a dark flight of stairs. After class she did rounds in the emergency room of a local hospital, where she attended to a schizophrenic kickboxer who had tried to kill his mother that morning and a stockbroker who was taken off the commuter train to Manhattan with delirium tremens so bad it killed him.

Each call Stern describes is a vignette of human nature, often with a life in the balance. From an AIDS hospice to town drunks, yuppie wife beaters to psychopaths, Jane comes to see the true nature and underlying mysteries of a town she had called home for twenty years. Throughout the book we follow her as she gets her sea legs and finally bonds with the burly, handsome firefighters who become her colleagues. At the end, she is named the first woman officer of the department—a triumph we joyously share with her.

Ambulance Girl is an inspiring story by a woman who found, somewhat late in life, that “in helping others I learned to help myself.” It is a book to be treasured and shared.

I was reading this book as I was going through the same experiances as the auther, right down to the people who would show up late to class.

It made me laugh, and think about the career change I was making. I loved the book. I hated the movie.

          4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-03-29

I stumbled across this book while looking for a road food book by Jane and Michael Stern. I didn't think it was the same Jane Stern--I didn't know about this part of her life, only having listened to Jane and Michael on NPR"s "The Splendid Table". Jane's personality really comes through in the pages of this book. She's chatty, vulnerable and fun to read. I found myself getting very easily caught up in her story.

          5 out of 5 stars I can relate.......2007-02-03

Jane was 52 years old when she became an EMT. I can relate after recertifying at 45 years old. A great read. If you haven't seen the movie based off from the book, do so. It too is excellant.

4 out of 5 stars A quick, satisfying and inspiring read.......2006-12-14

Jane Stern, a middle-aged woman with all kinds of issues ranging from phobias and depression to anxiety and being overweight, tells the tale of how she did the unexpected (even to herself) and became a volunteer EMT for the small town of Georgetown, Connecticut. A writer by profession, Jane infuses her experiences responding to calls, riding in ambulances with victims and on-scene traumas with just the right amount of poignancy and humor. Readers may very well be inspired to become EMTs themselves.

          5 out of 5 stars A Phenominal Read.......2006-01-11

Jane Stern's Ambulance Girl is an amazing story of a woman who, late in life, decides to become an EMT to save her from herself. A depressed hyphochondriac, Stern can't seem to find a reason to get out of bed in the morning. But after starting to see a new psychiatrist, that "volunteers needed" sign posted at the fire station catches her eye. Filled with humor, laughter, quirk, and sadness, Stern's story brings to life the adventures of those wonderful men and women who save lives everyday. Mrs. Stern throws herself on the line with this one, willing to have the world critique her unabashedly. Ambulance Girl is a very light read, and Stern's sarcasm is what gets her and her audience through the troubling times she goes through. Her entire life gets thrown out of whack, and while becoming an EMT saves her, there's a time when she realizes that she can't save everyone, and it becomes tough again. It's the cycle that every person goes through: believing in themselves, letting that confidence get away with them, having everything ripped away, and having to start right back at the beginning again. It's a universal truth and Stern does a great job at making herself seem human in this aspect. This book will make you laugh and cry all at the same time, while saying to yourself, "I know how that feels." While not all of us are going to become Emergency Medical Technicians, we all have our monsters to face and we're all going to have to find a way to face them. Stern's story makes us realize that we're not alone. If only we all could be as brave as Stern and decide it's time to attempt to knock down the walls that keep us from living the life we want to live.

              5 out of 5 stars Super resource!.......2006-08-24

This book is a very useful resource if you deal in sterling silver flatware as it provides actual photographs, not drawings of the handles of each patter. The other benefit this book provides is that you can identify the pieces based on size -- and accurately call a piece by the proper name. Each pattern has a list of many available pieces and their value. I use this book alot and bought one for by business partner -- anyone who deals in sterling flatware should have a copy!

              3 out of 5 stars good for a beginning.......2006-01-23

easy to follow and while this does not have hallmarks or much history, does carry clear pictures of standard patterns and makers. Good for a start and considering how little is out there, not bad.

1 out of 5 stars Even More Disappointed..........2006-01-08

I wish I had read the above review before I spent my money on this book. I think if someone is going to sell an identification "guide" for a specific category of goods and they are only going to cover a representative selection of that category, they should at least be honest about it on the cover. The cover of this one should say "If you only need a few photos from each manufacturer and you don't need makers' marks to help you IDENTIFY your silver, then this book is for you!!!"

              3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing...............2003-07-28

As an avid collector of sterling silver flatware I am grateful for any new publication relating to pattern identification. Unfortunately, this guide is somewhat disappointing. The pattern illustrations and photographs range in quality from fairly good to down right poor. There is no section on hallmarks, an essential element in the identification of flatware patterns. Warman's guide is primarily a price list. As Moran correctly points out in his introductory remarks, merely a "ballpark" valuation. Nevertheless, while not a definative work, one should consider adding this guide to their sterling flatware reference library.

5 out of 5 stars Gene Marshall, the beginning.........2000-11-26

For the fans of Miss Gene Marshall, this walk down Hollywood's memory lane will not be a disappointing one. Gene's early days from childhood to her initial experiences on the set of her first motion picture, Blond Lace, serve to chronicle the much anticipated story of one of the 20th centuries most beloved celebrities.

A carousel of sweetly flavored reminisces from "those in the know" are often interwoven by the tartness of tensel town's own diva, Madra Lord.

This well written text left this particular reader wanting more, more, MORE!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for a beautiful doll.......2000-11-20

I had wanted this book since I first heard about, so when I got it for my birthday, I was very pleased. The book is just beautiful, Mel Odom's illustrations are fabulous, as are the photographs which make Gene seem to come alive. After reading through the "interviews" and letters from people who worked with Gene, you almost find yourself believing that she was a real person, and want to go and rent a movie staring her, which sadly one cannot do. It is a wonderful book to add to your collection, and it makes Gene's story even more real. I highly recomend it to any Gene fan. Even if you do not collect Gene dolls, this book would make for an entertaining read.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Book for a Beautiful Doll........2000-10-31

I just saw the Gene Marshall - Girl Star book at Borders. It is beautifully photographed with excellent illustrations. This book will make an excellent addition to any coffee table in any home. The story line is very well thought out and it can rival any fiction of the 1940s. Also, the book should be displayed right along with the Gene dolls that all of the collectors have, it would make a great conversation piece for visiting guests in your home.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous photography brings Gene to life.......2000-10-27

This is a terrific book. I am a big fan of Gene - as well as the way she is presented. The use of shadow and light in the wonderful photography makes her looks very real. In addition, the thing that makes Gene special is that she has a whole story - of how she was discovered and became an actress. They have interviews with various friends, enemies and family, again, making her become very real. Two thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars A must have for the Gene fan!.......2000-10-26

This is a very entertaining and beautifully illustrated story of the rise of Gene Marshall. Anyone who has enjoyed reading Hollywood history and movie star biographies will love this. The story is told in snippets from studio memos, a gossip column, and excerpts from the biographies of Madra Lord, Trent Osborn, Eric Von Sternberg and others. It all begins with Gene's childhood and ends with the debut of her first film "Blonde Lace". There are some new characters introduced into Gene's story such as Trent Osborne, an aging actor who has dated Madra Lord and Ivy Jordan, a character actress who becomes Gene's friend. The photographs are cleverly done and the illustrations are wonderful. Anyone who has studied Hollywood lore will see the similiaries to real life stories and situations and that makes it all the more fun. The only reason I don't give the book 5 stars is because it ends too early. An entire synopsis of Gene's career would have been welcome. It really leaves you wanting more.
