Nicely Translated Book for those studying Vaganova!.......2005-08-18

This book does well as a student resource for those studying Vaganova Methodology. Simple sketched pictures assists well those individuals whom really want to know what soviet dance instruction is all about.

A ballet classic!.......2004-09-15

Agrippina Vaganova is legendary in the world of Russian ballet and, in fact, the Russian style of ballet is usually called the Vaganova style(the term "school" is usually used instead of style). The reader should keep in mind that this is a classic and not a modern tutorial; nevertheless, it is so well written that it is still useful to today's students. In these pages we can learn many little tips not found elsewhere. The book is amazingly complete, despite its small size. The book will be most appreciated by the more mature sudents of ballet. This classic is ALWAYS included in any serious ballet library!

Beautiful Book.......2003-11-29

As a student dancer I usually like to brush up on things that I wish I could at school or on the bus. It's a great book emphising on Russian Technique and basic steps. For eight bucks it was one of the most cheapest ballet books I have boughten. It goes straight into the positions of the feet. It tells you of what are the correct ways and what are the incorrect ways. It gives little drawings of a ballet practicing the step. If you can remember those little diagrams of the silloutte of feet for ballroom dancing, most of the diagrams are like that. In the drawings when a leg is suppose to switch or the body, little lines are drawn and it is almost impossible not to understand what the steps are drawn out to be. The only thing I wish was more of introduction to pointe. There are only a chapter dedicated to pointe work, clear and understandable on how to develop strength with echapes and releves. Even in the diagrams they give you Russian and French and Italian for some to show you the possible difference. This is a very detailed book, the only problem you would have if you didn't live in the ballet world at all. If your looking for an introduction I suggest the Royal Academy Ballet Book, but if you know your ballet terminology and learning how this manual will save you steps, get it. It helped me understand really what I was suppose to do. Visually you don't learn everything but it breaks it down perfectly to really know what your doing physically than visually.

This is what it must have been like.......2005-06-12

I was given a beat-up Avon paperback from 1963 and became thoroughly engrossed. Often repetitive but never dull, this day-by-day account by a Seaman First Class of three years of action on a light cruiser in the Pacific afforded me a new appreciation of what my father endured in the same places at the same time. Highly recommended to any American.

An unrealistic utopia, to this blue-collar liberal........2007-08-25

I ordered this book when I saw the first half of a two part program on PBS by the author, Michael Albert, but missed the second half. He spoke about how liberals (and liberal organizations) often research and describe problems of governance or poverty, etc., but the way we often try to fix these problems is by reiterating what they are, over and over again, accomplishing little. Thus we are at a disadvantage to the operators of the politics of greed, in which the ends justify the means, and self-interest rules. In the second half of his program he was to show how to get out of this circle of non-action. So I bought this book, hoping to find out what I'd missed on PBS.

While the book contained a few interesting ideas, such as getting rid of class structure and attitudes in liberal organizations as well as in everyday life, overall the book seems to me to describe the hyper-liberal fairy tale of a communist utopia (with emphasis on a small 'c'.) As such, Realizing Hope was of little interest to me, as it is both impractical and unrealistic. I'd be fascinated to hear if someone got anything of value from Realizing Hope, but I didn't.

This is an ok field guide to some, though certainly not all, of the flora in sagebrush communities. It offers good to mildly satisfactory photographs of the plants, and keys to help identify them should one get stumped (pun not intended).

Beautiful book with great field usability.......2006-01-24

No this book is not as comprehensive as Hitcock and Cronquist but it is so user-friendly that it is an essential for travel in sagebrush country, anywhere in the great basin. It serves as a great starting point to find a genus when a more comprehensive resourch is available for further clarification. The addition of natural history (ecosytem descriptions) and some ethnobotany make it even better. The color photos are great for quick ids of more common plants. Here in Central Oregon it is excellent. With this book along with Andy MacKinnon's books, you can give you pretty good id coverage for most of the Northwest. Websites can fill in gaps and details effectively for most of us. Great for gardeners who use native plants as well. If you even know about this book, you will love it. All the copies I have seen have been well-used. It is a great bargain too. Highly recommended.

locally good.......2001-04-03

I have used this book in two places: the Columbia Basin sagebrushcountry just east of the Washington cascades, and in south-central Idaho. For the Columbia Basin this book is very good. Anything that catches your eye is likely to be included, despite the book's slimness. In central Idaho the coverage is not so good, and you will end up wondering if what you're looking at is in the book. Just remember, as with all small, easy to use plant guides, there are probably five times as many plant species on the ground, even in the Columbia basin, as there are in the book.

The natural history coverage is reliable but not terribly extensive.

In Washington I have found it's nice to have this in combination with the authoritative but unfriendly and jargon-ridden Hitcock and Cronquist flora. Taylor will get it for you if it's a reasonably common plant, or give you a good starting point for wading around in H&C, if there's any doubt.

A Great Field Guide and Reference.......2000-05-29

This book is useful in many ways: as a field guide, reference, habitat identifier,uses of plants such as food or medicine (e.g. by local Native Americans), soil types, animals present, etc. It opens up the tremendous beauty of the steppe-shrub-sagebrush deserts of the West. Lovely photos. This so-called "barren land" is teeming with amazing diversity and color. It is also helpful for those of us attempting native plant (indigeous) gardens. I highly recommend it.

You can figure Florence out on your own!.......2001-08-21

This set of walking instructions is terrific if you are very limited with time in Florence. These walks will take you around the major sites; however, Florence is an extremely concentrated city. It's not the behemouth that London/ Rome/ or Paris is. Therefore, with any basic map (Insight makes an excellent one), most travelers can plan a basic route. I left this map in the hotel room, and once oriented to Florence (which takes a day) was more than capable of finding these points and major streets on my own. This little foldout is for the traveler with very litttle time or interest in planning his/ her itinerary. The times given for the walks are fairly accurate, though.

Great walking tour of Florence - off the beaten path.......2001-01-15

Jeanne does a great job taking you on wonderful walking tours of Florence. If you are looking for a detailed tourist guide, this isn't it. It was obvious to me that Jeanne spent a signifigant amount of time developing this guide and her recommendations for walks, gelato, trattorias were right on. She led us to places that the locals go! One of our best meals was a trattoria she recommended!

Perfect guide for the relaxed traveler.......2000-06-11

This guide is full of wonderful tips for planning your day in Florence! As a casual traveler, I enjoy wandering the streets of a new town watching how the people pass the day and moving slow enough to allow time to look around and really see the neighborhoods. The guide gives the phone number to call for reservations at the Uffizi saving hours of time on line. We walked up to a special entrance with our reservation and were admitted in less then five minutes! I have friends who have waited on line twice and were never able to get inside the Uffizi.The walks are organized and the details explain sites that would normally be unexplained as you hurried from the Duomo to the Ponte Vecchio to Santa Croce.In addition, the local trattorias listed were wonderful. I have also used the Venice Walking Guide with great success and I recently ordered the London and Paris Walking Guides for my next trip. This guide is money well spent.

Useless - Copy of tourist office pamphlet.......2000-01-07

Warning: Buyer beware - It's a 16 page pamphlet with no substance it contains no more than what you would find in a free promotional pamphlet you pick up at any tourist office. We are Disappointed.

a winning textbook.......2003-03-12

I'm currently using Frankforter's Medieval Millennium as the textbook for my survey of medieval history. It's the most successful textbook I've ever assigned! (And that's not just me; the students agree.) The book is highly readable, catches people's interest well, is comprehensive in its coverage, and even has interesting pictures. This is definitely the text I'll be using in the future. I'd recommend it highly to anyone who wants a one-volume overview of medieval Europe.

Very well written.......2004-11-13

I rec'd my shipment much sooner than expected, so that was my first good reaction. I was delighted by the contents. It is categorized by early preschool to adults/teens, there are readings for solo and for theatre and these can be adapted to suit whatever audience/actors available that you have. Clearly explained outline in the production notes with written and diagramed instructions. The scripts are clear throughout the book. Categories from a traditional view to a modern twist on an old story. Very well done and a welcome addition to our home. I will be using one for our Christmas program coming shortly and there's no worry about memorization for this one! My favorite part of this book is that this treasure trove of plays are royalty free!
