Bookends, Jane Green's third comic novel of contemporary love and lust, proves beyond a doubt that when it comes to light reading, plot is everything. Bookends makes a great case study because it has little going for it besides plot. Dialogue? Stilted. Characters? Clichéd. Writing style? Sloppy. And yet the book is well-nigh impossible to put down. A few friends meet at university: Simon, the chirpy gay character; Portia, the glamour girl; Josh, the adorable, unpretentious catch; and Cath, the overweight, insecure narrator. Portia strays from their crowd, but the other three remain friends into their 30s. Now successful Londoners, each faces a personal crisis: singleton Cath leaves a secure job to start a bookstore; Simon looks for love; Josh's marriage goes through growing pains. And then Portia, as intimidating and elegant as ever, wanders back into their lives--with surprising results. Green is a past master of the ugly-duckling-turned-swan story. Cath's transformation--neatly echoed by the changes in the lives of her friends--is completely addictive. Plot does indeed rule. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
On the heels of her national bestsellers Jemima J and Mr. Maybe, British sensation Jane Green delivers a sparkling tale of old friends reunited and old jealousies rekindled.
Catherine Warner and Simon Nelson are best friends: total opposites, always together, and both unlucky in love. Cath is scatterbrained, messy, and–since she had her heart broken a few years back–emotionally closed off. Si is impossibly tidy, bitchy, and desperate for a man of his own. They live in London’s West Hampstead along with their lifelong friends, Josh and Lucy, who are happily married with a devil-spawn child and a terrifying Swedish nanny, Ingrid.
All’s well (sort of) until the sudden arrival of a college friend–the stunningly beautiful Portia, who’s known for breaking hearts. Though they’ve grown up and grown apart from Portia, the four friends welcome her back into the fold. But does Portia have a hidden agenda or is she merely looking to reconnect with old friends? Her reappearance soon unleashes a rollicking series of events that tests the foursome’s friendships to the limit and leaves them wondering if a happy ending is in store.
Fortunately, Cath has plenty to take her mind off Portia’s schemes–like her gutsy decision to leave her job in advertising to fulfill her dream of opening a bookstore. And then there’s James, the sexy real-estate agent who keeps dropping by even after the bookstore deal is done. With his irresistible smile and boyish charm could he be the one to melt Cath’s heart?
Told with Jane Green’s captivating wit and flare, Bookends is above all a story about friendship–its twists, turns and complications–and how it weathers the challenges of love, ambition, marriage, and, most of all, growing up. Warmhearted, sophisticated, and full of delicious surprises, Bookends is Green’s most dazzling novel yet.

OK Chick Lit.......2007-08-22
This book starts off marvelously, introducing us to young people at the beginning of their university careers, with the foreshadowing that they will have an impact on one another's lives forever. The characters are carefully drawn and the situations believable. But alas, then they graduate. Much of what happens to them as adults is highly predictable. I was only carried along by the sizzle and excitement of the early chapters. This is my second Jane Green book, and the second time she's underwhelmed me. From now on, when I need a Chick Lit fix, I'll stick with the superior Marion Keys.
Good Summer Read.......2007-08-09
I like this author. Her books are great light summer reading by the pool or on a trip.
Story about frienship.......2007-03-11
Simon, Cath, Josh, and Portia were college friends and roommates in England. They thought that they would remain friends for a long time. Then Portia did something that changed their relationship. Si, Cath, and Josh are all still friends and see each other all the time. Cath and Si are so close that if he were not gay they would have married long ago.
Then Si, Cath, Josh and his wife Lucy find out that Portia is the writer for a very popular T.V. show whose characters are replicas of themselves so they get back in touch with Portia.
Lucy and Cath get involved in opening a bookstore together and with the help of James whom becomes Cath's boyfriend they are the hit of the town. Unfortunately Si finds himself in the worst crisis of his life. He was involved with aragent Will who after they break up tells Si that he just found out he's H.I.V. Positive and they had not used any protection.
This is a great book, showing the ups and downs of friends and how when the chips are down friends will always be there for you.
yeah it was definitly a torture B0G T0ME.......2007-03-10

A story about friends.......2006-07-13
This is a superbly written story that about the bonds of friendship. The characters are so vivid and have great chemistry that you wish to be part of their group.
The beginning tells of the friendship among college mates Cath, Si, Josh, & Portia. It was a friendship that revolved around each's love and admiration of the beautiful Portia who knew this. The tightly-knot foursome comes undone after Portia seduces and breaks Josh's heart. As Cath, Si, and Josh graduate and move on, they purposely lost touch with Portia until 10 years later when Portia returns to their lives.
Chemistry among the Cath & Si, and Josh & Lucy (his wife)is obvious and very real. There are many funny "Will & Grace-esque" moments along with some serious issues; AIDS, adultery, & sexuality. I finished the book in good spirits and wishing for a sequal. I only wished we could get the story from Portia but as Cath notes towards the end, there is not enough water under the bridge to continue their friendship in the same manner as 10 years ago. Don't worry, Portia does redeem herself in the end!

Book Description
It's summertime in Sunnydale, and Salma de la Navidad, a friend of Buffy's from Sunnydale High, needs help. She and her family immigrated to America, and now she fears her brother, in an attempt to gain social acceptance, has stumbled into supernatural gang warfare. To make matters worse, an unknown creature has been doing a little night stalking. Buffy is certain that this new demonic presence has its roots in L.A. -- Angel's turf. So with the help of the Slayerettes, she heads off to battle demons -- both actual and personal.
Meanwhile, in the City of Angels, Cordelia stumbles upon a vampire-worshiping cult of runaways as Angel investigates an invisible presence wreaking havoc in the local prisons.
Now Buffy and pals must deal with identity crises of their own. Buffy may be the Chosen One, but she is, ultimately, expendable. Angel is unique, yet his particular status isolates him from humanity and monsters alike. So while all wonder -- do I make a difference? -- the humans and demons who surround them answer that question in astonishing ways...

Super Reader.......2007-08-06
Take some shadowy unseen monsters, add in a young gang of vampire worshippers, two poltergeists in a family, some of the Russian mafia, some gangs into magic, a few bent cops, and nobody is quite sure where this is going. It all starts when a rich girl tells Buffy her dilettante brother is missing, and Cordelia runs into some stray girls who want to be vampires.
At the end of the book, many monsters start appearing, and no-one knows why. A bit all over the place, this one.
Not what I was expecting.......2004-05-25
When I first read the back of this book, I was so excited. It sounded like an excellent read. I waited until all three books came out and then I bought them. And then I read them, and was extremely disappointed.
Nancy Holder is my 2nd favorite Buffy/Angel book writer behind Christopher Golden. I hadnt read a book of hers that I hadnt liked, until this one. I was just so surprised at how poorly they were written. It seemed as if the author had only seen one or two episodes of the show and based their writing on that which confused me because Holder had written so wonderfully in the past.
The characters just didnt seem right. Buffy would say stuff that I just didnt see Buffy saying. All of the characters personalities were just so off. And Faith wasn't really in the series at all until the 3rd book.
I love Nancy Holder and I would recommend that you buy any of her other books, just not this one.
Burning.......2003-12-23
"Unseen" is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel crossover triligy focusing on a group of kidnapped teenagers. Salma, a privliged Mexican at Sunnydale Collage, goes to Buffy and Willow to help with her brother who went missing. Meanwhile back in Los Angeles, Angel gets involved with a man who was framed by crooked cops, and his psychic son. Cordelia and Wes track down a bunch of vampire worshiping teenagers. All of these stories do not come together in this book. But there is a lot of conflict; Angel seems at odds with Riley (Buffy's new boyfriend), LAPD detective Kate Lockly, and even Buffy herself. Xander get envious of Spike because of him and Anya having so much in common; Giles and Wesley have a battle of the experts. I liked this book, and I couldn't wait until the next one. One little problem is that the "Unseen" series isn't as good as "The Gatekeeper Triligy" or "The Lost Slayer" series, but still pretty good.
The Burning.......2002-04-29
After reading this book I got hooked on the u.p.n. drama BuffyThe VampireSlayer and you will to. I don''t want to go into detail because I might give away the ending so my advice to you BUY IT...

Cholesterol Confusion.......2006-12-16
Having recently been diagnosed with high cholesterol, the title of this book caught my eye. The story was interesting, sympathetic, scary. I like the idea of blending recipes with a memoir, but I was utterly shocked at the ingredients in the recipes - butter, eggs, butter, eggs...um...isn't that part of the problem? Still, I enjoyed the story and wish the author and her husband only the best in health.
An interesting story, but. . ........2006-08-17
. . .I could not help but get frustrated at the way Ms. Ross portrays her husband. She paints him as if he were a dog or a developmentally disabled child. You understand wanting to feel sympathy for this couple as they journey through and beyond a near-death experience. Unfortunately, she makes us feel more sorry for him for being married to someone who (albeit probably inadvertently) seemingly disrespects him.
Destined for a Lifetime Movie.......2006-04-20
Saw this book in the library - it was the clever title and jacket art that caught my eye and aroused my curiosity. I checked it out and was rewarded with an honest, poignant, and inspiring account of love the second time around and surviving heart disease. If you enjoy reading Ruth Rheichls memoirs, then this should delight you.

Book Description
"Yum!" thought Amy Kaneko when she tasted the Japanese home cooking she'd married into. Even better, turned out it uses easy-to-find ingredients, and she couldn't believe how simple the techniques are for food this delicious. This terrific cookbook showcases 70 of Amy's favorite recipes, including Tonkatsu (crispy pork cutlets in a tangy sauce) and Onigiri (cute little rice balls stuffed with salmon). A glossary describes the more unusual ingredients and a source list makes it a snap to find and use Japanese specialties such as daikon, miso, and wasabi. It's tasty, it's practical, it's a wow with family and friends so Let's Cook Japanese Food!
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-08-16
Amy Kaneko presents to the reader a form of healthy and fun to eat foods everyone can and will enjoy. Recipes are easy to follow and most of the food sources can be found at any major shopping food chain.
great book.......2007-06-19
i love this book. she makes recipes super, super easy... but all the food is also realy great. it's simple, so if you're into difficult recipes, this might not be your book... but if you want great food explained in an easy way, this is your book.
a good beginning for a new cuisine.......2007-04-26
I bought this book after a positive review was written in the Oregonian's Food Day section. I enjoy Japanese food, but haven't had the nerve to try making it at home. Amy Kaneko's descriptive details helped me get over the fear of trying it myself. The meal I chose was simple to prepare, and the ingredients were fairly easy to find. (Note to anyone else about to try this - mirin, or sweet sake, wasn't with the sakes in the wine department, but next to rice vinegars in the Asian food section - it's not a drinking sake.) I was very pleased with the results - a much more complex flavor than the simple preparation would have led me to expect.
The only negatives about this book are that vegetarians will be a little surprised to see how much pork and chicken winds up in the 'vegetable' section of the book, and that there is no dessert section.

Learn to make the most popular varieties of sushi: chirashi-zushi (scattered), maki-zushi (rolled), bou-zushi (bar-shaped) and fancy sushi. Basic ingredients, simple instructions and tips are detailed throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Very decorative sushi ideas!.......2002-04-02
After taking a class on how to make basic sushi I bought this book for some new ideas. I love the colorful decorative Maki-Zushi recipe! They also have very good visual layouts for how to make thick sushi rolls, hors d'oeuvres sushi, Ichimatsu Oshi-Zushi & other great meal ideas. Lots of pictures, colorful illustrations, decorative sushi & meals prepared which is great for those of us who are visual people! I recommend this book as a great way to create great looking as well as tasting sushi! :)
Great Sushi book!.......2001-10-04
For quite some time now I have loved going to various sushi places and trying out all different types of Sushi. One day I decided I wanted to make my own, so I picked up this book at a local store, and I must say I am completly satisfied. this book is a great refrence guide on how to make many different types of sushi. It aslo shows you how to prepare the basic ingredients such as the rice. I can recomend this book for a newbie interested in making their own sushi.
Neat tricks!.......2001-01-01
This is NOT a book for those hoping to learn how to make restaurant-style nigiri-zushi. Instead it's filled withfull of pictorial step-by-step directions and color photos for making the kinds of easy-to-do sushi Japanese friends might make at home and serve as party fare. You'll find recipes for chirashi-zushi (a bowl of rice with ingredients scattered over the top), maki-zushi (rolled sushi), inari-zushi (sushi rice in fried tofu bags) and oshi-zushi (pressed sushi). Included are a lot of simple but decorative tricks, such as turning fried tofu pockets inside-out for visual variety... and, yes, a sushi "birthday cake."
A great book for home sushi........2000-07-07
After being introducted to traditional sushi in a Japanese home many years back, I have searched for the right book that would help me replicate what my memory serves me. After purchasing this book and trying several recipes, I have definitely found what I was looking for. The instructions are quite clear with concise listings of ingredients and utensils. Although the color pictures are beautifully done, sometimes their layout can be a bit confusing to the actual "process" of sushi making. I am also fond of the different types of sushi that the book covers... most think sushi consists of "raw fish" only; this book squashes that myth. I have this book at my arm's reach when I am in the mood to recreate my past....the recipes are timeless.
Reasonable But Not Great.......1999-12-29
I have been making sushi for about a year and bought this book in the hopes of obtaining a reference for basic techniques and a guide to new new techniques. Overall I am happy with the book, but not as happy as I had hoped. Although there are some good ideas for exotic sushi, there really isn't much included in the way of basic techniques. Techniques for preparing Nigiri-zushi aren't even discussed. Novices would be better off looking elsewhere for instruction; I would recommend The Book of Sushi. Still this can be a vaulable book for intermediate sushi chefs and does include a variety of interesting sushi ideas such as squid sushi. Aditionally, this book is written by a japanese author seemingly for a japanese audience; western readers may have trouble finding some ingredients.
Book Description
Healthy, delicious, modern - everyone loves sushi. And it's not hard to make yourself. It's delicious as a quick snack, part of a more substantial dinner, or easy party food. Ami Kazuko, Fiona Smith, and Elsa Petersen-Schepelern explain how to cook sushi rice and start with simple rolled sushi using classic ingredients such as cucumber or tuna. There are also recipes for sashimi and miso soups, plus great accompaniments.
Book Description
A complete guide to simple authentic sushi preparation step by step.
- A wide variety of easy-to-follow intriguing recipes with color pictures.
- How-to-prepare Japanese techniques revealed.
- This is a book written by outstanding Japanese sushi experts edited for the use of persons living mainly outside of Japan and yet traditional in its presentation.
Customer Reviews:
Some basic ideas for making sushi.......2002-04-02
Hopefully you've take a sushi making class before trying to make sushi at home. This book has some good basics such as how to make seasoned sushi rice, explaining condiments & garnishes to use and simple recipes, some equipment & utensil suggestions, glossary of terms. There were some creative ideas for both vegetarian & meat eaters like "molded ham sushi" & "Sushi wrapped with pickled vegetable leaf." Additional soup & salad recipes to eat with your sushi were helpful. Although not the best sushi cookbook I've seen it's worth buying a used copy & adding to your cookbook collection.
Don't even think about it.......1999-07-01
If you are new to sushi making don't even think about buying this book. I was frustrated to the point of killing somebody.
Not great, not half bad.......1999-01-13
The photography in the book is excellent. Lots of pictures of nicely prepared sushi. The pictures alone offer great ideas. It is divided into well defined sections that do make sense. However, the information provided in the book is not as simple and didactical as you might expect from the title. It almost seems as if the information was pieced together from different sources and nobody took the time to proofread it. It's not impossible to understand as stated before. Beginners will benefit from this book, but maybe it shouldn't be your sole source for sushi info.
Its basic recipes and techniques worked well for me.......1999-01-03
I bought this book just over six months ago, and we have been having "Sushi Saturday's" ever since. The step-by-step recipe for the seasoned rice (the foundation for sushi) is excellent. The book also has great basic recipes like seasoned shitake (teriaki)and homemade pickled ginger. The techniques for rolling, and creating nigiri were especialy helpful for getting started. Granted, my first try was not great. I still find preparing sushi to be very difficult- but through no fault of this book. However, we have now had several very successful sushi-dinners with friends. I credit this book with getting me started on all the basics.
This book is suppose to be for begginers?.......1998-12-02
Granted, I am not the world's greatest cook, but I think anyone who is exploring such abstract cooking methods as making Sushi must be fairly comfortable in the kitchen. This book confused me to the point of frustration. It is put together in an incredibly complicated (unnecesarily so in my opinion) manner. If you are a begginer look elsewhere. p.s. I think the author's relatives wrote these other reviews!!

Liberty Blue Dinnerware is compact, concise and provides everything a collector or dealer needs. Debbie and Randy Coe have done an excellent job of providing the history of Liberty Blue Dinnerware with pictures of original ads adding value to the readers experience.
The pictures are excellent and the organization of the book makes it easy for identification purposes including descriptions, measurements and current values. Although the book is a "soft cover" the glossy pages are first rate and enhance the quality of the pictures.
Buy it, use it, enjoy it. Value pricing makes it that much better!

Path to Finding Technical Perfection..........2004-12-09
and that ain't an easy pathway to find, believe me. I love Barth's insistance on using only the most traditional methods, when there are multiple techniques that could be covered. His instructions are so clearly illustrated and explained that I've actually gotten a grip on a method that I have failed to understand for years and am presently using to cover a walking stick with - traditional style gourd stitch. Most books simply teach the two step method and don't even mention the older, three step method and when they do, their instructions tend to be so confusing that I end up with a stick wrapped in a tangled net of tiny beads and thread. But thanks to Barth, I finally get it!
The other methods he covers, lane stitch, loomwork, diagonal weaving and others, he covers with equal clarity and skill and I'm looking forward to using this book to upgrade my abilities and make my art jewelry better than ever!
If you buy one book to tell you how...buy this.......2002-11-11
In Europe, people dress up in buckskins, hang out in tipis and emulate the Native Americans of days gone more than a century and a half ago. Their attention to detail seems to be no less than compulsive, and this book is an ultimate product of this compulsion for authenticity, accuracy and completeness.
Barth has completed an instructional masterpiece of Native American Bead work that I give to experienced Native beaders to their astonishment. If you want to learn technique, buy this book.
Traditional Beading Techniques for the Modern Day Beadworker.......2001-09-21
I never received this book ~ Wondering why? ?

Forgotten Heritage-Thankfully no longer forgotten........2000-06-19
The authors and contributors to this book worked deep in the fine details of Houston's past. So much of it has been lost to the ages, but with Houston's Forgotten Heritage, it almost comes back to life through the fine photographs of the opulent homes and even the log cabins. It is a joy to show this book to many of my "old-timer" neighbors, who remember a building here and there, and even the old fixtures, appliances, and ways of life. We should all be grateful to the authors of this book for reminding us of our glorious past.

Book Description
From the author of Becoming Mae West—an in-depth look at the Silver-Screen legend who forever changed America’s idea of the leading man
Tango pirate, gigolo, powder puff, Adonis—all have been used to describe the silent-film icon known as Rudolph Valentino. From his early days as a taxi dancer in New York City to his near apotheosis as the ultimate Hollywood heartthrob, Rudolph Valentino (often to his distress) occupied a space squarely at the center of controversy. In this thoughtful retelling of Valentino’s short and tragic life—the first fully documented biography of the star—Emily W. Leider looks at the Great Lover’s life and legacy, and explores the events and issues that made him emblematic of the Jazz Age. Valentino’s androgynous sexuality was a lightning rod for fiery and contradictory impulses that ran the gamut from swooning adoration to lashing resentment. He was reviled in the press for being too feminine for a man; yet he also brought to the screen the alluring, savage lover who embodied women’s darker, forbidden sexual fantasies.
In tandem, Leider explores notions of the outsider in American culture as represented by Valentino’s experience as an immigrant who became a celebrity. As the silver screen’s first dark-skinned romantic hero, Valentino helped to redefine and broaden American masculine ideals, ultimately coming to represent a graceful masculinity that trumped the deeply ingrained status quo of how a man could look and act.

A Bit Condescending.......2006-02-16
I was disappointed in this book because I really felt that she looked down on Valentino, and many times insulted him by calling him "naive", and putting down his acting abilities in his films, etc. I also felt that she spent too much time and too many pages on printing the bad reviews of his films, and not enough of the positive ones!!!
In this case, I feel that this woman did not understand how difficult the film industry is, and obviously she has never worked in or on a film.
She was more like a critic that looked down on Valentino, and even defended Natasha, who never really loved him! She did not understand Valentino, and how difficult show business can be for a star that is set apart from the rest.
There were many times when I was really angry with this author. She neglected the human side of Valentino, and concentrated more on everyone around him, mostly the negative.
I do not like this woman... Rudy would have been upset at this book.
A Masterpiece About Old Hollywood.......2005-12-07
Of all the biographies I have read, Emily Leider's is the best--and I read many. Leider looks at Valentino's life in an objective way. She reveals a lot about his childhood and struggling years in America. She takes down scandalous myths (about Valentino being a "gigolo"), while revealing his flaws. I find some of the reviewers complaints without merit. Leider in no way is homophobic; she just strikes down the homosexual myths spread about Valentino. (I suppose some people wish for certain accusations for be true.) Leider reveals a lot about the silent star before stardom, career highs, and after his death. Leider deserves a lot of credit for this book. It is underappreciated. A true gem.
A First Rate Biography .......2005-06-15
I have seen other books on Rudolph Valentino but was always skeptical since 'Rudy' has been dragged through so many tabloid type write-ups but this one appeared to be a valid and thoroughly researched work. I am delighted that I bought it. At long last, Rudy is shown as both the man and the actor. There are times when Ms. Leider has to state that "he may have..." but it is necessary when Rudy's early days in New York are open to guessing what he may have done. When there is no record available, Ms. Leider takes the high road rather than interjecting a definite action the young immigrant made. I found it difficult to put this book down. It is a page turner. I found myself feeling as if I knew Rudy and I liked him. I didn't want him to die! Like Jean Harlow, he didn't seek medical help until it was too late.
Both Harlow and Valentino have been subjects of author Irving Shulman. Those books are to be avoided at all costs. Instead, go with David Stenn's definitive biography on Jean entitled "Bombshell: The Life and Death of Jean Harlow". Like Emily Leider, he did his research leaving no stone unturned. As for those reviews who call Leider's work "homophobic", I disagree. There is simply no evidence that Valentino was gay or bisexual. He was not homophobic and there may have been one fling with a man but if no evidence is present then one cannot assume otherwise that Valentino was heterosexual. Like James Dean, people often want him to have been bisexual or gay. Ms. Leider states that both women and men were attracted to Rudy and that is true. The same holds true for Valentino. There is a certain vulnerability and boyishness about him that is attractive. But take note how she refutes Pola Negri's statements that she and Rudy were engaged. Rudy was down to earth and not histrionic like Pola.
The films themselves are crucial and it is sad to learn how many are lost such as "The Young Rajah". Hopefully, it may be discovered like "Beyond The Rocks", his only film with Gloria Swanson.
This book is a keeper. It is alive and the author brings Rudy from his pedestal and shows the young man and his many turmoils with the press and insecure American men! If anyone were to ask me what book to read on Valentino, this is the one. I am grateful to Emily Leider for showing us Rudy, warts and all. He was often foolish in spending, in love and he was no businessman
What we have here is, after so many years, the real Rudy.
Very Powerful.......2005-04-19
Ms Emily W.Leider has brought Rudolph Valentino to life in this book. The reason because Leider has researched and spent the time to go into fine detail about the people who knew him to show us all different characters, details about his Mother, father, lovers and close friends, adds only strength and character to himself.
Great detail about his wives, Jean Acker first wife (on paper only) A smart women, who I feel knew what she was doing, who knew how to tap into Valentino's emotions and wallet. Part time friend and always on hand to throw the Valentino name out there when money seem required she continued to use his name for financial gain. Natasha Rambova A more colourful character cultured, Sophisticated also a dancer, creative, a modern day's women of her time and his soul mate....... and for him, her parents had money, and social standing. Love and passion they both deeply shared. Women caused him a whole lot of trouble, Ms Leider writes more detail but gets the point across spot on.
His elegant mother she was long gone, but I feel she would have set things straight for him, she was a fine strong willed women and the only stable women he had in his life, a women that he needed just to sort out all his worries like she had done for him so many times before.
He was no businessman which he never denied, a man so cultured knowing many languages and sophisticated in every way always trying to better himself and had suffered for his art so much, did not teach himself the business side of things. As for dealing with the film studio bosses he was up against businessman with education trained in strategy. In European circle's and definitely British ones (To coin a phrase "My word is my bond") also from hearing through my own grandparents nothing was in writing back then a handshake was an understanding, that the handshake was a man's word. Studio bosses although gave out their word, when it came down to it, the old...... you needed to get that in writing ploy worked wonders for them, which out smarted most of the stars at the studio's of the 20's all to be taken advantage of, simply because the studio's knew most star's did not have the educational upbringing to understand the boardroom business strategies.
As for his sexuality well from what I've been reading of the 20's, Who really knew who was doing what and with who, affairs, scandal and swinging (and have things changed in our time..... I think not) well the 20's are filled to the brim with it. So it would have surprised me if I found out he hadn't participated in any one of these three. Ms Leider will only write what she has discovered in her research and nothing more, remember proof is needed to write anything concrete on a person sexuality.
In all, the book tells you what you need to know, I know big fans are more passionate about Valentino and pull on any inaccuracy made from this book, But for me I thought Ms Leider did real good, I just wanted to know his Life story and it's all there. Congratulations to Ms Leider for taking a good crack at this, it's been well covered and well worth a read.
As ever, Valentino just out of reach..........2005-02-17
This is a surprisingly dry book about one of the most colorful performers of the golden age of silent film. Leider's obvious bias against delving into the homosexual side of Valentino's complex personality is the book's fatal flaw. Only one indisputable homosexual affair is begrudgingly admitted, and its impact on Valentino's marriage to the (bisexual) Natasha Rambova, which fell apart shortly thereafter, is downplayed. Hey Emily, the guy married a lesbian and a bisexual, can you say "beard"? Apparently not. The details of Valentino's film work are interesting for buffs, but there sems to have been little attempt to corroborate the many rumors of Valentino's gay life, while no attempt to discredit same is overlooked. I can only guess that Leider feels that the mystique of Valentino would be tarnished by acknowledging what seems fairly obvious - he swung both ways. This is homophobic. Valentino's bisexuality enhances his allure, which continues to attract fans over 80 years after his (tragic, stupid and preventable) premature death. Reading this book will give you good insights into his career, his talent, his lack of business sense - but Valentino the man remains, as ever, just out of reach...
