Book Description
Benni's friend and her husband have opened a dude ranch that's about to go belly-up. So Benni helps out, tempting vacationers with a Western extravaganza. Soon, she's cooking and quilting with a slew of tenderfoots. But the fun turns sour when a dog finds a human bone on the property and Benni uncovers the remains of a man murdered outlaw-style.

A bit too thin.......2007-06-29
For a Ms. Fowler book, it was very superficial. As was mentioned by some previous reviewers, it's almost as if characters were thrown in just for the sake of naming them. I'd almost prefer they be left out completely. Unfortunately, too, Whip's justifications for his actions were never fully addressed (disliking Johnny isn't even a hint of a reason to jeopardize the animals he loves). But probably the thing that plagued me the most was the concept of dude ranch guests sitting down and being waited upon for their meals (unless this was just a poorly veiled excuse to introduce Benni's self-centered, selfish, sleezy, sloppy, slutty cousin as a lazy waitress). Any ranch, be it working or dude, will serve food family style; wait staff would be considered an outrageous extravagance. I grew up in Arizona and worked these ranches during summer vacations and know well what they can and can't afford to provide.
But I do hope we have an opportunity to see more of Hud's dad. He was a breath of fresh air.
Broken Dishes by Earlene Fowler.......2007-06-11
Typical of the Benni Harper mysteries. The charaterisations, glimpses of life in California and the continuing development of Benni's and Gabe's relationship are always more interesting than the plot, at least to me who lives in New Zealand. Loved the side story of Solomon the Goose.
Traditional story and quilt history.......2007-02-07
Part of the reason I like these books is the quilt history. I have checked up on the authors data, and she is always correct. I also enjoy the relationship Benni has with Gabe--how it is changing and developing. However, the new man in the series, Hud, sounds like a wonderful guy and I can see why Benni is in tuurmoil. The story lines are clear and enjoyable, and the mystery evolves with all the clues there--you just have to pick up on them. It's an easy read--relaxing and enjoyable--with a bit of history to wake up the brain cells. I've enjoyed all the books.
Love the Beni Harper books!!.......2005-09-30
Great Read and great characters. Always a good story laced with humor. Cannot wait for the next one.
I'm sorry but this wasn't one of my favorites..........2005-08-27
I love this series, but this one just seemed to drag a bit. Like another reviewer said, don't start with this one. Go back to the beginning of the series. I still enjoy Ms.Fowler's writing and look forward to reading the next in the series.

Now officially deputized, 92-year-old Victoria Trumbull must dig up clues to find a missing corpse.
Customer Reviews:
Great Location and Lead Character - with a Caveat.......2006-05-27
I love Martha's Vineyard, with its quiet lanes and lovely gingerbread cottages. I was thrilled to find a mystery series set on this lovely location. I was even more happy that the lead character - Victoria - was a 92 year old island resident. It offered a lot of texture, background and wisdom to come out of the main character.
The story is a nicely complex one. There's an empty coffin which, it turns out, has millions of dollars of jewels hidden in it. There are numerous people who are after the jewels and perhaps killing each other off as well. You have the typical small island politics, with people fighting with each other, attracted to each other, and generally leading mixed-up lives. You also get the quiet, non-tourist-season glimpses into the island in its "natural state".
I love how you really get a sense of what an island is like off season. The residents all know each other. They know the back routes into the dump when the front one is closed. They plow through the snow, they walk down the quiet lanes. They're lonely and friendly and patient and tense.
There are subtle clues slipped into conversation that you might miss or might pick up on. There are literary references that, if you catch them, give you a leg up as well.
I do have a complaint about Victoria. I really like characters with flaws and with a well rounded aspect to them. So I appreciate that Victoria shouldn't be perfect. However, she appears to have completely NO common sense at times. It starts with her planning on sending cash in to a "you've won $10 million dollars" sort of sweepstakes offering. It always drives me insane that people in our modern day and age fall for the Nigerian Money Scam, so to have a lead character in essence doing this in the story bugged me. This happens right in the beginning of the book so it was very off-setting.
Victoria goes on to do several other things like this, including inviting a supposed murderer to her house and just chatting with him, with nobody else around, completely unprotected - and bringing up key topics with him. You could say "Oh, but she comes from a gentler time when everyone was friendly." Surely she didn't get to age 92 without learning to take care of herself. It's like this aspect of her comes and goes to fit the plot. Sometimes she is quite wise and sharp. At other times - when the plot calls for it - her brain turns to mush and she is completely blind to the dangers. It was very frustrating to me.
Still, I did enjoy the book and I told myself that "her brain had temporarily become feeble because of her age" to get myself past those moments. It did reduce my enjoyment of the book, because the whole reason I was enjoying the 92 yr old character was that she WAS portrayed as able to live on her own and be a productive member of the community. To have to reduce her to "having flashes of great stupidity" because of her age upset me. If at least *reasons* for her lapses could be put into future books, I think I would enjoy them much more.
A missing coffin and murder on Martha's Vineyard.......2006-04-26
This wonderful book is set on Martha's Vineyard. Victoria Trumbull is a 92-year-old police deputy. The police chief is new to the island and knows that Victoria knows everyone and can be invaluable in an investigation.
When a casket isn't where it's supposed to be in the cemetery, Victoria is the one to notice something wrong to help them locate it.
Her friend Howland's cousin Dahlia is coming to the island. She has cancer and will be getting treatments at the local hospital. Victoria agrees to let Dahlia and her bird Bacchus rent a room until Howland can get his home presentable for Dahlia.
Soon the hearse driver disappears, there is a string of suspicious deaths, as well as the coffin goes missing after it's dug up.
Victoria begins to put the pieces together, but can she do so before the rest of the players are dead?
I really enjoyed this book. Victoria is such a wonderful character. She may be old, but her mind is very sound. I like that this book was told from her persepective.
Martha's Vineyard is a favorite setting of mine. I always feel like I'm on vacation when I read a book set there.
I highly recommend this book and series.

Diamonds Can Be Costly.......2006-04-06
In this third book in the Victoria Trumbull series, we see the 92-year-old sleuth trying to solve several murders on Martha's Vineyard. Moving around a little slower than she would like, Victoria tries to connect a series of events that confuse law enforcement on the island. An empty casket that had been buried for 10 years, a fire at the dump, a missing hearse driver, and a boarder with a barking bird keep Victoria hopping. Will she ever be able to find the $10 million in missing jewels that are reportedly on the island?
This book started off a bit confusing for me, but liking the other books in the series, I did finish it. About half way through, things started to fall into place, and I was kept guessing as to who the murderer might be. The ending was surprising, and paved the way for some of the characters from "off-island" to return.
This series is much different from another cozy series by Philip Craig also set on Martha's Vineyard. Both are good reads, and wonderful additions to the cozy genre.
The first book in this series is titled "Deadly Nightshade". Enjoy!

Product Description
Theres more than one reason the new West Tisbury police chief officially made ninety-two-year-old Victoria Trumbull her deputy. For one thing, Victoria knows just about everything about everyone in Marthas Vineyard, not to mention their ancestors. She may be ninety-two, but she is as sharp and as sharp-eyed as the proverbial tack. So when Victoria is the only one who spots something amiss among the gravestones of the West Tisbury cemetery, its no surprise that the police chief listens.
Something is indeed amiss. First comes a request by presumed relatives in the Midwest to disinter a coffin for reburying elsewhere. Then things go wrong from there. When, as a last measure, the coffin is found, dug up, and opened, it does not contain the expected body. Then the coffin itself disappears.

An invitation to Transformation.......2002-12-16
Gearhart continues themes she developed in "The Wanderground" in this thought-provoking beginning to her trilogy. At the same time that she develops an exciting narrative, she raises all sorts of questions about the strategies we should use to create social change. She encourages us to think in new ways about our planet, gender, and communication.
A great beginning.......2002-08-10
In the not-so-distant future, a series of ecological changes have caused all the animals to die and the population of Earth to dwindle, leaving the ratio of women to men about twelve to one. The Earth (now called Little Blue) has restructured with this new governing force, and the peacekeeping group, called the Kanshoubu, also assist in running the prisons. Since the bulk of the prison population is male, there is a growing worldwide movement to use the prisoners to find the biological cause of violence, but there is also a group advocating against this as well. When three of the world's large prisons stage revolts, the Kanshoubu must quell the violence, even as both sides of the debate continue. In this first book in a new trilogy, Gearhart explores the nature of violence in humanity and the different ways in which each sex deal with it. Told through a series of intriguing characters, this thought-provoking story challenges the reader's own conceptions of violence, leaving the reader to decide alone on which side of the debate to land. While there are similarities with such works as Jean Stewart's Isis series, Gearhart's new trilogy is less of a focus on individuals than on humanity as a whole.

Chapters focus on topics of real concern to us - abstinence, anger, fear and depression, relationships, and money. Life-changing.......2002-10-29
I got this book for my pet gerbil when he reached the 1-pound mark. It was time to face up to the fat and start shedding some ounces, and I have to say the cheeky little rodent took it like a man and really got into the spirit of things, and he's been dieting successfully ever since.
Unfortunately, as he correctly pointed out, it was time for me to do the same, so we're both eating tofu burritos and bean- sprout sandwiches these days and yearning for those glory days when we used to suck down a large chocolate milkshake together on a balmy, moonlit night with hardly a thought or a twinge of guilt. It's been a tough ride but he's really stood behind me the whole time. I couldn't have done it without the furry little guy's constant encouragement, and I can't say enough about how this book has changed both of our lives for the better.
Excellent.......1998-09-16
Although not OA approved literature, it is well worth any OA'er reading. The author states that the BIG BOOK is still the bible, and he reads it often, but his book shows us overeaters the 12 steps from a compulsive overeaters perspective. Something he said helped me to return to program something like its not just another diet program, it's a "save your life program". AMEN

Book Description
During Piero Fornasetti's long career he established an enduring reputation as a designer with a style that was all his own--a style based on illusionism, architectural perspectives, and a host of personal leitmotifs, such as the sun, playing cards, fishes, and flowers, from which he spun seemingly endless variations. Fornasetti applied his decorative vocabulary to an astonishing array of objects--hats, waistcoats, pipes, ashtrays, chairs, plates, cabinets, pianos, shops, racing cars, ocean liners: all were transformed by the application of unexpected images. The Post-Modernist reappraisal of design has left Fornasetti's oeuvre more contemporary and popular than ever. Designers and collectors today celebrate his use of allusion, unsettling images, and striking juxtapositions to create unique, whimsical objects. Fornasetti's masterpieces shock, delight, and inspire.
Customer Reviews:
The next best thing to owning a piece of Fornasetti!.......2007-07-05
What a wonderful book this is!
Quality binding, paper, and printing. And the photography of this artist's work is extensive. The text is authorative and well-researched.
If you are a fan of Fornasetti, this is a "must have".
Beautiful book However..........2007-05-15
I wish there was more pictures.. I did not realize it was more of a biography, my mistake!!!
But very nice quality.
Stars Barely Apply Here.......2005-12-26
It's rather sad that not only is this book out of print and absurdly hard-to-find, but that finding any generally available record of Fornasetti's work seems to be an impossible goal nowadays. Pretty much everything that is missing from the contemporary world--wit, whimsy, engaging complexity, craft, imagination, humanity, a sense of history (sorry, it's a long list of absentees!)--can be found in this man's remarkable graphic work. How to describe it? Well, think of old architectural prints, renderings of sea life, hot air balloons, astrological symbols, the sun with a warm countenance, the visual vocabulary of the Renaissance recombined and recyled and reused with a mildly surrealist but distinctly upbeat edge. The result is a style of design that wraps the present in the past, sometimes almost literally, always lovingly.
Hardly a review, I mean where will you get the book without spending $100 (although I feel it's worth it, the book is excellent and packed with examples of his work). Do a Fornasetti Google for images and revel in the stuff. A bit of that and you may be willing to spring for the book or pester a publisher.
very impressive.......2000-06-18
When we discovered plates, chairs and other decorative gadgets from Fornasetti some years ago, we did not imagine, my wife and I, that a real artist lied behind all these creations. I was really impressed when I discovered in that book the beautiful face of the artist and when I learned that he would never create any more because he already passed away. Fornassetti art is mainly decorative. It pleased every body because it is an harmonius equilibrium between classical inspiration and to-day printing technologies. If you do not know where to buy furniture inspired by Fornasetti, buy this book and place it on a coffee table. Everybody will want to read it.

All Night Long... : The True Story of Bon Jovi.......2001-08-23
It's clear from this book that this guy cannot write. Bon Jovi are huge and have a huge story to tell. Can you tell it in 99 pages? Of course not. Where 'The Dirt' by Motley Crue is sublime, this book by Wall is ridiculous. There is no style to his writing. His words are far from exciting, and, are infact, boring. Clearly he has done this just for the money. Unless of course, he just can't write. I suspect he is a college grad who's pa works for the publishing company. You get no insight into the band here, and you learn nothing new. Motley Crue are much finer storytellers, and they are not even writers. (Yes I know the book was ghost written by journo Neil Strauss.) Save your money on this one. I have all the books on Bon Jovi, and this is the only one I'd say steer well clear of. It's just a shame I can't get my money back. Still, die hard Jovi fans will lap it up purely because it's about their fave band and they have to have all the stuff they can collect. But anyone with a brain will give up on this past page 12. Mick Wall, who is he? Get a life and learn to write, buddy! But please, no more rock bios! Leave it to the pro's, like Neil Strauss!

I CAN'T SEE..........2000-03-28
I can't see how a book with only 96 pages can cover all the aspects of the career of such a great, good and famous band as Bon Jovi, with already almost twenty years on the road. TO to that, it is necessary a book like Mick Wall wrote about Iron Maiden, called "RUN TO THE HILLS", with almost 300 pages filled with text (not photos).
All Hail the Great Bon Jovi.......2000-03-17
Do you love the Bon jovi as much as i do? Still get goose bumps when you hear Always or the beginning chords of Wanted? Or have you just discovered this great band and want to find out just what you've been missing all these years? Then this book is for you! It covers the everything from their slow but steady start in the bars of New Jersey until their record breaking days as one of the greatest live rock and roll bands ever! But read this book quick because with their new album CRUSH about to hit stores, in June I am quite sure the story is not over. And there will be a quite a few more bon jovi books to read in the not to distant future. But for now this is the best Bon jovi book out there.
A must for Bon Jovi fans!.......2000-03-08
I am a big Bon Jovi fan which made this book very interesting to me. It starts with Jon recording at the Power Station to the madness of Slippery When Wet and New Jersey, to the writing for the These Days album. It covers the trials and tribulations of the band that almost broke them apart and the counseling that brought them back together. Gives great insight to the Young Guns II album with the number one single Blaze of Glory. It is written in British style that makes it harder to read and understand at times but flows well. This is a must for all rock fans and especially fans of the best rock and roll band ever.
