Book Description
On a frozen highway in a pitch-black Alaskan night, environmental terrorists sabotage an oil truck, killing its driver and despoiling miles of precious wilderness. Their point: that the President's plan to open the Alaska refuge to oil drilling will cause irreparable damage to the area's ecology.
This is the first strike in a deadly plan known as Charon's Landing.
Exciting new author Jack B. Du Brul returns with a Philip Mercer adventure that takes readers from the political hotbed of the Middle East to the frigid waters of the North Pacific.
Ivan Kerikov, ex-leader of the KGB's secret science division, has joined forces with a renegade Arab oil minister to derail the U.S.'s plan to stop buying imported oil through the development of alternative fuels and the use of Alaska's oil. Kerikov's plans include crashing a fully loaded supertanker in the middle of San Francisco Bay and bombing the Alaska pipeline at key points. The minister's planned coup will make him dictator in his own country and head of OPEC--and will line Kerikov's pockets with several million dollars.
But Kerikov hasn't accounted for Philip Mercer, on the surface a mild-mannered geologist. When the discovery of a fire-blackened charter fishing boat leads to the murder of three of his drinking buddies, Mercer gets involved. And when Mercer gets involved, trouble follows--for everyone. Mercer knows all the right people in all the right places...or is it all the wrong people in all the wrong places?
Mercer's got extra trouble in the form of Aggie Johnston, the beautiful daughter of a petrochemical magnate. Eager to destroy her father, Aggie feeds secrets to the eco-terrorists--until she discovers the ecological damage they are willing to do to promote their cause. Kidnapped by Kerikov and imprisoned in an off-shore oil-drilling platform, Mercer and Aggie escape into the freezing ocean and begin a hair-raising thrill ride more exciting than any roller coaster.
With the fate of the U.S. and the Mideast riding on his damp and grimy coattails, Mercer journeys into the heart of Alaska to stop Kerikov's assault on the pipeline. Can one man stop an army?
If that man is Philip Mercer...the odds are in the Free World's favor.

Fast-paced, very enjoyable read.......2007-08-03
There is no Amazon rating between 4-star and 5-star, but I would actually give this book a 4.5-star (close to perfect). This is the first book I've read of Jack Du Brul's, but it definitely will not be the last. Just excellently written: Believable and compelling characters written into a complex, multi-threaded story that keeps you turning those pages just as fast as you can digest them. A MASTER THRILLER!!
Not His Best.......2007-05-28
As others have said, the book is just too long. I enjoyed the arctic setting and the introduction of new characters like the Petroleum Minister of the UAE. I also enjoy the character of Mercer who shows a new side in his interactions with Aggie in this book. Unfortunately, the constant pacing is choppy and this leads to the book being slow. Major disasters are not averted and instead of dealing with the consequences, the characters just jump to the next attack. Even the cover is a letdown as it shows a huge oil rig (which I think would make a cool setting) that only appears in one small part of the book.
If you want to read DuBrul, I recommend The Medusa Stone or Pandora's Curse, unless you have a lot of time to spend on this one.
Another great adventure by Du Brul.......2007-04-21
Jack Du Brul returns to the world of Phillip Mercer in another no holds barred action adventure. Mercer is a geolgist who seems to be a lighting rod for danger. Drawn back into the world of international intrigue and violence, Mercer is the one thing the terrorists could not expect. Terrorists are targeting the US oil economy. A group of Arabs are funding the terrorist, seeking to take over the Middle East as well as force America to capitulate or be starved for oil.
Mercer is thrown into the story and the action never stops. The adventure and settings are very well done. The characters are well crafted with the romantic friction between Mercer and the devout environmentalist striking sparks all through the story. A good read.

Our hero seems to be an alcoholic .......2007-04-06
I have read and very much enjoyed former DuBrul books, but this one just seemed to go on forever, with geologist Mercer unable to keep up with the bad guys. Also, he seems to be either becoming or is, an alcoholic, as he just had to drink at almost every occasion. Also, at the beginning, he has Muslims drinking champagne - isn't alcohol forbidden for Muslims? Why cannot any of these action heros just find a good woman and marry her, for pete's sake? How about finding a woman of his own persuasion who could be his partnet in future world saving missions? I will read future DuBrul books, though Amazon says the latest is "unavailable", but doesn't say just why that is. Give this one lots of time to read or put to aside with a yawn.
eco-terrorism at it fullest.......2006-09-21
Arguably the slowest book of the Mercer series; it's only slow because there are too many plots, sub-plots, and more characters that really don't get their fair share of time. Charon's Landing could have been a 3 part series, which I believe would have helped this book alot. It would have given us a more intricate character development and plot sequence. Two of the more important characters who get developed succently in the first part of the book, simply disappear at the end with a one sentence send off. In this respect the book fails. Another important character, Aggie, who gets referenced in other books, and plays an important part of Mercer's own character display, seems extremely forced and unbelievable. Again, I contribute this to too many plots that simply cannot get fleshed out within a single book. The overall premise is, however, very complex and quite interesting. Justice was served very well at the end of this book; and in wonderfully horrifying fashion. For Mercer fans it's another link in the chain for the series, but it should not be the first book read by the uninitiated.

Book Description
Forced to leave San Francisco after the devastating earthquake of 1906, Fremont (née Caroline) Jones follows her heart to the bohemian beach community of Carmel-by-the-Sea. She is eager to be reunited with her elusive suitor, retired spymaster Michael Archer, but finds him mysteriously metamorphosed into Misha--otherwise occupied and decidedly unavailable for sleuthing. But the irrepressible Fremont Jones has her pride, and determined to restart her typewriting business part-time, she signs on as temporary keeper of the Point Pinos Lighthouse.
She has barely settled in to her watch when a velvet-clad corpse washes in on the tide--and Fremont is off on a new and ultimately life-threatening quest. Starting with the free-spirited artists of Carmel, she searches for clues to the identity of the dead woman and uncovers a community filled with intrigue, violence, and plenty of motives for murder. When Fremont is attacked and robbed, her lighthouse torched, and the artist helping her turns up missing, she realizes she is perilously close to the truth. And that the next body to drift in on the tide might well be her own.

Great fun!.......2006-10-23
I picked up this series after reading Amazon reviews and while waiting for the next Laurie King - Mary Russell book. The story has a strong lead character - Fremont Jones - who leaves her stuffy home in Boston and sets up a typing business in San Francisco during the time right before the big earthquake. The books are funny and well done. Thumbs up!
Fremont recovers from the quake on the Monterey Penninsula.......2002-10-22
As soon as her affairs were in order after the Great Earthquake, Fremont travels to Carmel to her friend Michael Archer and the cottage he rented for her in the bohemian artist colony. She arrives to find not Michael, but Misha Kosskoff, apparently his real name, and his lifestyle is as different as that name. She moves her business to a nearby community and takes temporary charge of the local lighthouse while the keeper is away. While on watch she sees the body of a woman wash up on the rocks of the light and sounds the alarm. The woman wears expensive and elaborate clothing, not the clothes of a transient, yet noone claims the body. Does she have any connection to Misha's new friends?
This is an intereting look into the bohemian lifestyle of the early 1900's. The writers and artists that flocked to Carmel were a colorful bunch as evidenced here. Michael becomes even more mysterious if that is possible and the murder is very difficult to solve. Great read!
Absolutely wonderful page-turner!.......2001-02-12
This is the third in the series that began with "The Strange Files of Fremont Jones." And it's amazing! It does everything you want a mystery to do. It's even better than the first two of the series, which I would have thought were impossible to top. This hard-to-put-down book is a superb read. Fremont's and Michael's characters continue to evolve, as does their relationship. And the ancillary characters are so much fun! Dianne Day absolutely sets up a world of time and place and mood and drops us in it. This has instantly become one of my all-time favorite reads -- mystery or otherwise. I'm not kidding! More! More!
Still a Good Read!.......2000-08-21
I too found this installment just a little weak, but still worth the read. Slower pace, with more understanding into Fremont and Michael. I think this book is the more of a explaination about just who is Michael and Fremont and what makes them tick. It brings them to more human terms. Sometimes in real life, courtship can be slow. And to top it off, Michael seems to be moving away from Fremont and acting like a real jerk. But it all comes together, and in the end you know so much more about the two of them. There are mysteries from all angles in this one. So pay attention and enjoy!
Tension, tension everywhere.......2000-05-28
I found the Bohemian Murders, the third in the Fremont Jones Mysteries, to be more intriguing than the last Fire & Fog. Although the atmosphere of San Franciso was delicious, I was glad for a change of scenery when Fremont moves her typing business to Carmel and finds herself frustrated with both a love interest who suddenly changes, and a mysterious body that washes ashore close to the lighthouse for which she is temporarily keeping watch.
I think Fremont grows up in this novel. Anyone who has been fascinated by the work of lighthouse keepers will love this book. It's the perfect setting for a mystery.
Day adds flavor to the Carmelites by introducing colorful characters all distinct in their 'bohemian' artistic ways. From the 'Twangy Boys' - Tom, Dick, and Harry, to artistic Artimisia, Day throws in so many wacky characters that the novel keeps you guessing to the end, about several things. . .
Truthfully, the real reason to pick this book up is the for the romantic tension between Michael and Fremont!

For a Fan.......2007-05-15
I am a big Angus Wells fan. I have read all of the fantasy he has written save for the Godwars series. After his passing, I picked up the series in a used book store. Though it is well written and interesting, the plot is very generic, and the ending can be seen from a mile away. I am really disappointed in this one. I will read the last 2 books which I hope add a little more to the story. If you want good Angus stuff, read "The Guardian", or the Kingdoms books.
Awesome!...but slow out of the gate........2006-09-28
I acquired this book on accident. A friend found it in the trunk of his car and assumed it was mine. I layed claim to it since he was just going to throw it away otherwise (Barbarian!).
The book turned out to be the usual "young man, feeling oppressed, runs away in search of adventure" storyline. But then, about halfway through the book it became suprisingly good. The plot twists in the later books get even better. If you can get through the first half of Book 1, you will be rewarded for you effort.
Recommended by a friend.......2004-01-16
A friend who is as avid a reader of fantasy as I am recommended this book with great enthusiasm. I have to say, I am now a little dubious of his potential to recommend me books in the future.
This book is very predictable. In fact, it's so predictable, that I found myself waiting for the twist within a twist to slap me in the face, because the truth behind the lies in the book is so obvious. It never came. Apparently, I was actually supposed to be fooled.
If you can't guess the ending of the book and spoil the "suprise" for yourself very early on, then who knows - you might enjoy this book. Otherwise, you'll probably feel as if you must have read this somewhere before in a past life... (it can't possibly be that obvious, can it?)
Among my favorite titles..........2003-12-01
This, as well as the other two of the series, is among my favorites. I've read all three of the books, and I find them hard to put down, once you get past the characters' backgrounds, as well as the history of the world they live in.
Calandryll, a fopish, book-engrossed prince, leaves Secca, his father's kingdom, in search of the Arcanum, a book rumored to hold the knowledge of the resting place of the Mad God Tharn. This book is also sought by the wizard Azumandias, who turns out to be dead at the hands of his son....Ah, but the rest, you've to figure out for yourself by reading it.
A very enjoyable tale.......2003-06-29
Being an avid science fiction and fantasy reader I am constantly on the lookout for new authors and tales to capture my interest. With this novel Angus Wells kicks off his Godwars saga. As a whole the series is very enjoyable, if not particularly original. I found this book to be good, if a trifle slow in places. The story follows the scholarly prince Calandryll on his voyage to recover the mysterious arcanum. With the help of Bracht the kern freesword, and Katya the beautiful and capable swordswoman of the Vanu. Calandryll matures from a fopish princeling to a capable adventurer. Assailed along the way by assassins and evil wizards the three travel into hostile lands to find the book, so that it may be destroyed.
The characters tend to be superficial at times, and the plot limps heavily in several places. The world and concept have a great deal of potential, but the plot is fairly predictable. Don't expect this to be the best book you have ever read, but it is still very entertaining.
Book Description
Every child has an off day when nothing seems to go right, but for some, angry outbursts, frustration, and resentment are the norm. When a child's anger threatens to jeopardize his school and social life and introduces an element of strain into the family dynamics that affects every member, it's time for a parent to ask: When is angry too angry?
Child psychologist Dr. Tim Murphy has addressed this very question with hundreds of families, helping them to understand both the causes and the repercussions of childhood anger and to devise effective strategies for defusing the time bomb in their midst. Whether it's a toddler staging a tantrum, a grade-schooler unable to make friends, or a sulking preteen who greets every adult request with antagonism, parents of angry children are baffled by both the depth and the root of their child's unhappiness. And when small social problems and household disputes regularly escalate into full-fledged battles, it's nearly impossible for parents to distance themselves enough from the situation to find a perspective that will remedy it.
With simple, direct techniques, Dr. Murphy shows it is possible to help an angry child understand what triggers his outbursts and develop new approaches for coping with potentially explosive situations. Identifying the ten telling characteristics of an angry child, Dr. Murphy provides examples from his clinical experience to help adults guide their children to more appropriate responses. Dr. Murphy also alerts readers to parenting styles that work best for these volatile children, explaining how a parent's own behavior can sometimes escalate a child's meltdowns. He pinpoints the moments when anger moves from a normal emotional expression to an extreme one, indicative of a larger problem. In a special chapter devoted to winning daily battles, Dr. Murphy offers advice on situations in which an angry child's temper is most likely to flare.
The Angry Child is destined to be a classic. With real solutions for the concerns of millions of parents, Dr. Murphy offers answers and hope for the families and educators of unhappy children of all ages.
From the Hardcover edition.

Great guide for frustrated parents.......2006-12-27
I recommend The Angry Child to patients in my psychotherapy practice because it offers easy to apply techniques to solve a child's anger problem. It teaches parents how to set up their children for success and tolerate frustration better. Parents learn how to spot the stages of anger with effective methods of intervention at each stage. It contains discipline techniques that make sense, and actually work to correct problem behaviors. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to help an angry child improve his or her behavior.

The Angry Child: Regaining Control When Your Child is Out of Control.......2006-03-17
This book has good advice, but the words on the page are really small and I could not read but a few pages at a time before I had to set it down.
great advice.......2003-07-10
Thanks for such a handy resource parents can learn from. I find Congressman Murphy, being a psychologist, has some helpful insights for parents, especially when he says the answers rest in everyone's houses, not state houses or within the federal government. In fact, he said the same things recently in a television interview.
I'd recommend this book for its common-sense discipline strategies and perspectives into the types of family and their actions that can unwittingly keep the turmoil going in a home. I've read plenty of books on out-of-sorts children. This one, by far, ranks high on my list.
a psychologist in Congress is great for parents.......2003-01-10
The material Amazon[.com] presents on this book is excellent, but it leaves out that Dr. Tim Murphy was sworn into the 108th Congress. I'm a constituent, as well as a parent, and I'm glad that he will bring much needed insight into issues relating to children, families, education, healthcare and much more as he did in Pennsylvania, only now for all. Your book presents a positive approach for parents and teachers on how to handle anger in their children, and sometimes recognize it in themselves.
Good luck Congressman Murphy! So glad you'll bring learned insight into some pressing national issues.
CBS Early Show/Bryant Gumble/The Angry Child.......2002-03-07
I saw Dr. Murphy talk about his book on the CBS Early Show with Bryant Gumble. I was really impressed by the information he gave as it sounded like he was talking about my child.
After i received the book, I could not put it down. The information was to the point and filled with useful advice. Thank you for a book that really helped my family!

I got this cookbook when I first moved out on my own and had to learn to feed myself. The recipes range from simple to comlex; all the ones I have tried are a taste treat. The asparagus chicken has been a favorite at many a party. Even in today's calorie and health conscious world there are recipes to enjoy here. My first copy from 1986 got destroyed in a minor flood and I will be replacing this well used cookbook.

review.......2004-03-01
It was the most interesting beatles book i've ever read. It had inside information and opinions of each beatle. I felt like i knew them personally. It wasn't helpful in writing my papers but it was the most intriguing. Once I have the time i'd like to read it from cover to cover. It is good for pleasure reading but not for research.
authoring made easy: use auto-generate book on your PC.......2003-10-13
This time Geoffrey Giuliano decided to make life easy for himself and present a book full of interviews, press conferences, letters, FBI memos etc., and so he didn't have to write a lot himself (Bob Wooler wrote the foreword). The book consists of 8 parts; The Beatles (interviews & articles from 1964 - 1996), John Lennon (1963 - 1983), Paul McCartney (1968 - 1998), George Harrison (early 1960's - 1991), Ringo Starr & Pete Best (lumped together for all of 2 articles; 1976 - 1985), Family (1979 - 1984), Friends (1961 - 1984) and Newspaper Reportage (1967 - 1998).
Of course this book will almost certainly feature some interviews that you haven't read before and at 349 pages this book is thicker than the average GG book, but why the interviews etc. provided in this book were selected, when there is so much more to choose from, remains a mystery (the author's introduction doesn't shed any light on this either). There is no specific `theme' in any of the sections, so it's not a book you could easily use as a reference. It includes things that I just can't place in a book like this, for instance `Forty Beatles Trivia Questions' (answers provided) - why? And there is also a single page that claims to be All About Apple Corps Ltd (when there are complete books about Apple alone). Once again - why when the subtitle is The Beatles In Their Own Words? And there are many more puzzling examples.
A lot of the interviews don't have the exact date and/or location where they were recorded and this limits their value somewhat.
The photo sections include quite a few snaps I hadn't seen before, so I found that part interesting (of course the author has made sure he features in a few of them, like he does in most of his books).
I read in another review of this book that it probably took him a weekend to put this one together. If he gets himself a faster PC, he could probably do 3 of these in one weekend.
Big Deal.......2002-11-29
As if we need any more evidence that Geoffrey Giuliano is a opportunist hanger-on disguised as a "expert" - this book is strictly the work of a clerk, not an author. Collate a bunch of old, dubious interviews, insert one's own impressions, call it a book. That great effort of journalism must have taken, what, a weekend to toss together?
And isn't it nice Geoffrey Giuliano can take credit for this "monumental" work and collect royalties off it.
Some expert.
CAN YOU DIG IT?.......2002-10-12
I sure did. So should any serious beatles fan. Great shots too. I keep it a reference book and go through it often.
Looking Through A Glass Onion.......2002-08-05
I have been a Beatle fan for thirty years, and it is great to finally hear the Beatles own story as told in their own words. Not only are the Beatles featured, but so are their closest family and friends. It was a great read, as are all Beatle author Giuliano's works.

Interesting Quotes.......2001-03-11
This is a nice book to peruse thru every now and then. It shows how John, Paul, George, and Ringo have evolved since the break up. Yes, each of their opinions change from time to time but don't we all see things differently at specific points in our lives. In spite of some acrimony over the years, I feel that these guys all basically respected and cared for each other very much. A neat novelty.
GOOD BOOK!!!.......1998-07-27
True Quotes from the beatles after the break-up, four individual beatles say about each other, the problems that led to their break-up, from their solo years, to john lennon's death and beyond. Good book for all Beatles fans around the world. ***JAI GURU DEVA OM****
This is the best book that I have read by the Beatles!.......1997-11-24
I have read a lot of Beatles books, and I thought that this was the greatest book on them. It is just so much better to actually read the Beatles own words on each other, drugs, and music. This book was well edited and I am still able to read it over and over again. I would recommed this book toanyone who has any interest in The Beatles or who really wants to read a terrific book on the best band ever.

Truly In Their Own Words.......2006-10-03
I looked this up on Amazon because I've had this book in my library since it was published in 1978, and I'm glad to see it is still in print.
The book's cover notes that the contents are "compiled" by the author "Miles" (aka Barry Miles) from "interviews and clippings assembled by the author," and also from extensive interviews of McCartney, Lennon and Harrison conducted by the author in 1966 and 1968. Nothing is notated as to source.
Every word in the book is from the mouth of a Beatle. The topics covered include "the story," really a collection of topics ranging from the early days to the break-up. A section titled "press conferences" of Q&A with unnamed correspondents. A section titled "Songwriting" discusses the songwriting partnership and process between Lennon and McCartney, and "The Songs" section is a song-by-song commentary from the band. Other sections cover the films, politics and drugs. Black and white photos appear throughout the book, none of which are particularly rare.
Overall, it's a fascinating look into not only the Beatles as a group but the individual personalities of the Beatles. I would particularly recommend this to a neophyte or casual fan of the Beatles.
