Book Description

Eight-time New York Times bestselling author Eric Jerome Dickey's new novel is filled with intrigue, speed, and sex appeal. And an unforgettable female narrator rides her sexy yellow motorcycle right through it all.

Billie (aka "Ducati") is known as much for her extraordinary beauty as for the sexy yellow motorcycle she rides through the mean streets of Los Angeles. Tough, talented, and self-assured, Billie's used to doing things her way—but that was before love threw an oil slick in the road and spun her life into chaos.

Billie's first problem is simple: she's pregnant.

Her second problem is that her lover, Keith, is still married.

Keith has some "things" to deal with, and the people in his life are dark and duplicitous enough to take matters into their own hands, determined to keep Billie from having her baby. Billie suddenly finds herself confronted, attacked, run off highways, threatened and shadowed. Keith still has ties to his manipulative wife, Carmen, and he adores his fifteen-year-old daughter Destiny. Will he do the right thing by his new family, or stand by his old one?

Soon all eyes shift as everyone finds themselves desperately chasing Destiny, a troubled and deceptive girl dancing on the edge of womanhood. When the rubber meets the road, everyone's fighting dirty for what they want...and they're all willing to destroy their enemy or go down in flames to get it.

2 out of 5 stars Lot's of drama and lots of sex.......2007-10-02

This is not my favorit EJD book. The drama and high antics were superb, but the content and the characters were mean, selfish and sad. Fiction is generally based on facts, but I'd hate to know any of the damn near middle age folks acting the way they act in this story. Too much was unbelieveable for me or I just don't know people that stupid. I love EJD earlier work, but this did not do it for me. Chasing Destiny was not bad, but it was not good.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-09-13

Considering all the baby momma drama I have had, I am so glad someone finally wrote about it. This book was fantastic from start to finish!

5 out of 5 stars Great read!!!.......2007-09-03

This book sat on my bookcase for more than a year before I picked it up to read...I'm so sorry I waited that long. It is one of EJD's best books so far. I was rooting for Ducati all the way through this book. I loved how it ended and would love to read more about her.

1 out of 5 stars Its Not Up To Par.......2007-08-10

Dickey's books have been way better than this, i was kinda disappointed when i read this book. It was to jumpy and the plot of the story wasn't really all that good.

5 out of 5 stars I loved the book, BUT..........2007-08-06

...I HATED the ending. UGH. I felt like I was watching a GOOD movie for 12 hours straight, only to be slapped with those white scrolling letters at the close to SAY what happened to the characters in two sentences. And then it's done. Otherwise though, I was completely captivated, and read the whole thing on my ONE day off!!

5 out of 5 stars MOST EXCELLENT MYSTERY!.......2002-06-22

Chasing Destiny sure keeps you focused on the mystery tying the main characters together.
Dana Lacey is in the landscape business after trying for five years to run her father's school for the deaf. He had an obsession and the ability to run his school and hoped that his daughter would continue his work.

Chase Mulholland became the catalyst that sent Dana back home after finding a competent woman to run the school. Now three years later things, strange things began to happen.

Chase and the Lacey School for the Deaf reside in Bridgeport, a three and a half hour drive from Wickham, Mass, where Dana now lives. Chase is in danger of being suspended for tampering with evidence and it is suggested that he spend a week in Wickham and interview Dana about the break-in of the school

Dana has an image of Chase as a predatory wolf, a loner and is determined not to fall for him. She knows that he will not willingly give up his position of detective on the Bridgeport Police Force. And she will not return to work at the School. The area is just too depressing.

The mystery of why her father had nightmares and what happened to the little girl he wanted to save keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Dana tells Chase that her best friend Gord Hammersmith and his great uncle Eli could probably help solve some of the questions the he has. Dana has a break-in in her home making Chase even more suspecious and he has the feeling that Dana is in more danger that they realize. They even get shot at and narrowly escaped. But what memories of a deepening passion.

I would have liked a more detailed description of Eli's victorian house as it sounds entirely fascinating. You will love the characters in this story and how it evolves -- a great read and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --M

4 out of 5 stars Review by Allen P. Bristow, author of Playing God........2005-08-02

Overholser's exciting story hangs on the identity of a payroll thief. The prime suspect is the town drunk, Billy Eckstrum, who is shot by a bufallo hunter. Unfortunately, Eckstrum's face is destroyed by the bullet and his identification is based on his clothing. Eckstrum's daughter and others come to doubt that it is her father's body and the search for truth begins. The plot hinges, just as in my book, Playing God, on the possibility that a criminal contrives to escape justice by feigning death. This is a great western mystery with strong family relationship issues.

            Book Description

Casey Jones is a take-no-prisoners female PI who wouldn't be caught dead whining over a lousy boyfriend or asking for help. She's too busy lifting weights, running off at the mouth and making doughnut runs for her overstuffed business partner, the larger-than-life Bobby D.--a 360 lb. lothario whose little black book is almost as big as his appetite. With a stretch in the Florida pen behind her and no official PI license, Casey comes from nothing and has nothing to lose. She lives full speed ahead, with a healthy respect for the screw-ups of others.

Only this time, it's Casey who's stepped in it. When a favorite client gets killed on her watch, Casey vows to find the killer no matter what the cost, either personally or professionally. When the trail leads her into the rarified ranks of North Carolina's social elite, Casey's dirt-poor childhood comes rushing back in a wave of self-doubt that adds fire to her considerable fury. She fights to regain her self-confidence and expose an incendiary killer out to destroy more than her name. Casey moves from farmland to the mountains, from debutante balls to drag bars, from boardrooms to bedrooms-and even down the prickly path of lust-at-first-sight as she battles unknown enemies anxious to see her, quite literally, go up in flames.

            3 out of 5 stars Light reading.......2006-02-22

Fun and an easy read. Will look for others in this series. Airplane and train book.

            5 out of 5 stars A Laugh-Out-Loud Mystery.......2002-09-20

I've read all of Munger's books except her most recent, and every one of them makes me laugh out loud as I'm reading. I write business and technical material for a living, so when I read for enjoyment I prefer fiction, and mysteries are my favorite. I read (and enjoy) my share of Kellerman, Sandford, Pearson, Harris, etc. AND Munger! I disagree with anyone who says she doesn't develop her characters. I definitely feel as though I've gotten to know Casey Jones and I look forward to each new adventure. Casey is an overweight, overbearing female private eye whose thoughts and actions are not what you'd expect if you're used to following the males of the mystery genre...and they shouldn't be! Munger's stereotypes of southerners are surpassed only by her own stereotypes of northerners, and from what I've read of the author, who should know these stereotypes better than someone who was born in the south but spent considerable time in the north. It's true, I pick up Munger's books when I want a "lighter" mystery to read, and "Money to Burn" was just the ticket. When I finished it, I was already looking forward to her next book.

4 out of 5 stars Brassy and bold Casey.......2002-04-15

This is the 3rd book in the series.Casey is the best PI character in the mystery genre and is an great character to read. She get's in over her head, loves what she does and meets the men who love her for her.

4 out of 5 stars Money To Burn.......2001-08-05

I loved this one. I ran across it from a friend and got the other two last summer. I had no idea what a Krispy Kreme doughnut was and now I make 2 hour drives to Vegas to get two dozen... If you do this also, just bring home and put in micro for 6 seconds and then, go to heaven...pick up the book and eat.

Casey is sassy, entertaining, and real. I love mysteries and this was one of my favorite. It is an easy read and great for a weekend quick pick me up. Good job, Katy. Keep em coming.

4 out of 5 stars Sorry about the four stars..........2001-07-18

Munger is a five-star writer, but this story that revolves around tobacco is one I couldn't get into for the subject matter. It also involves a poor little rich girl, which is a plotline that's never appealed to me, not when the girl's old enough to change her own life.

But the plot is a solid one, the characters varied and real and mean when they need to be. Casey Jones is a great lead character. I worry about her drinking (and driving) and eating habits. 170 pounds of muscle? Tell that one to the guy behind the Krispy Kreme counter, Case. And she's got a fascinating romantic lead in this volume. (So glad to see he stuck around for at least one more book!)

Of the four Munger books I've read so far, this is the only one that really didn't grab and hold me until I couldn't put it down... but I still give it four stars for tension and style.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing much new but a great place for new readers.......2004-04-02

I first read this many years ago when i was new to spider-man, this books really give me a great understanding of peter parker and mary jane watson, we get to see them through the years and we see highlights from other comics like the master planner story from issue 31 of the amazing spider-man comic way back in the early 60's.

i could not have asked for a better book to start with, and it even had my favorite spider-man villain doc ock in there.

the art is an older style very close to john romita and is great because it's some of the best spider-man work you can find, moments like spidey under the rubble trying to get out becuase he wants ot save his aunts life..those stick in my mind today.

so it's not ground breaking but it's wonderfully done and is a must for any new fan and i think a great retrospective for older fans.

1 out of 5 stars There is no need for this book.......2001-04-11

Really, I can't really think of anything this book did. The story is a recap of how Peter and Mary Jane met and grew up, and maybe there is some new stuff there, but nothing worth reading the book for. The rest of the book is another fight with Dr. Octapus. And not a very interesting one either. The art is bland like watered down milk. This book just doesn't push any boundaries in story or art, nothing new comes out of it, and it's a shame trees died so this could live, if ever so briefly.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful adjunct to Gyrotonic.......2006-02-23

This year, I experienced an extremely painful bout of sciatica. Although the pain was quickly alleviated through a combination of acupuncture and deep tissue massage, I could sense that a "third leg" of my treatment was missing. My acupuncturist suggested Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis. After taking a dozen Gyrotonic private lessons, I was amazed by the amount of body awareness that had been taught to me, and even more amazed that my body remembered it from lesson to lesson. This book sounded as if it would be able to clarify (at least partially) how this process happens. And indeed it has.

Please read Chapter 1 in entirety! It explains what happens in the body when the exercises described in the book are performed. After reading this chapter, I could accurately predict the breathing sequence in the fundamental Gyrotonic Arch-and-Curl exercise -- actually, I can predict the breathing sequence for any Gyrotonic exercise. Although I have not actually practiced the exercises laid out in the book, they make so much sense from a Gyrotonic perspective that there is no doubt that they will work as the author describes. Many of them (to my eyes, at least) bear a marked resemblance to Gyrotonic routines.

The author promises results in a few short weeks. She says that you will have better posture, more energy, and less stress. What she doesn't mention is that your newfound core strength will also make lifting things a lot easier. This is a terrific book, and a must read if you have back pain. If you're fortunate enough to live near a Gyrotonic studio and can afford a series of private lessons, the lessons of this book will be translated into an incredible freedom of movement. But Gyrotonic is definitely not necessary to the understanding of the book -- it merely makes lessons to be found in this book more accessible through a defined series of simple physical movements.

Disclaimer: I am not a Gyrotonic professional. I have no vested interest in either teaching or promoting Gyrotonic. I am a layman -- an unathletic engineer who has found Gyrotonic to be the fastest and easiest way to learn to move correctly. It also happens to be the Rosetta Stone for evaluating Breathworks.

                4 out of 5 stars A really helpful book.......2005-09-12

Straight forward information on getting your back in shape and keeping it there.

5 out of 5 stars Methods that truly work........2005-04-05

This book will help you. I've suffered from chronic back pain for the past 6-7 years and I've seen a dramatic change in my levels of pain. BUY THIS BOOK! I was out on sick leave from my job as a teacher for four weeks. In desperation I turned to Amazon and looked for some type of help. I found Breathworks but I wasn't convinced that breathing exercises could help but I was desperate. I was still at home for the next two weeks and found by the end of this time I went from not being able to stand up to being able to return to work and finish out a full day. I complete about four to five exercises a night just before bed. The deep breathing relaxes me and helps fall asleep.

On a more vanity driven note, I have gone down one pants size and people are asking me how much weight I've lost.

For the first time in about five years I feel hopeful about what the future may bring and the possibility of being free of pain. I'm on my way to a better and more healthful life thanks to this book.

                Book Description

Jewelry art in Japan is, surprisingly, mainly a twentieth-century development. Classical Japanese jewelry was never made simply for ornament, but had a practical purpose, with beautifully crafted belt toggles, fans, and haircombs being worn for social and religious occasions. In the last few years, however, a whole new studio jewelry scene has emerged in Japan, producing objects of astounding quality.

Featuring 200 beautifully illustrated examples of the very finest work by 50 contemporary artists, and in particular the revolutionary materials being used, including lipstick, ash, and naturally decaying naphthalene, Contemporary Japanese Jewellery is the first book to be published outside Japan that charts the trends and developments in this growing area of interest.

With a historical overview of the Japanese jewelry-making tradition and its social context, as well as twentieth-century developments as Japan became increasingly influenced by the West, Contemporary Japanese Jewellery will be indispensable to anyone interested in modern developments in jewelry-making, and of great appeal to the broader craft and design communities.

                4 out of 5 stars Keep your trash - it's potential jewelry.......2004-02-27

This book is a catalogue of jewelry featured in an exhibition that toured the United Kingdom accompanying the "Japan 2001" festival. The pictures of personal ornamentation in this book will test how you define `jewelry.' Simplicity is thematic, giving the viewer an impression of movement in the swoops and curves shaping each piece. For example, ear ornaments do not hang from the earlobe but, instead, are shaped to the ear's interior, like a hearing aide, with a hole made for sounds to enter.

Teruo Akatsu makes beads from dust, threading them onto stainless steel wire. I surely have a surplus of this raw material at my home. (You might recall that our San Antonio artist Sherry Fotopoulos has used dryer lint to create sculptures.)

Tomomi Arata uses sand, enamel, silver, and gemstones to create rings that looks like they've been lost in an ancient shipwreck.

Hiromasa Hashimoto strings liquid silver bugle beads on silicone cord to make a geometric necklace. Yuta Hataya fashions bracelets checkered by brass and silver.

Mikiko Minewaki is the ultimate recycler, making rings from the ends of cigarette lighters and colored plastics.

The above examples show just a few unusual materials used by these inventive artists, but you must see the book to know how the materials are rendered into spectacular jewelry ornaments.

Most hobby books are generally very specific 'how-to' texts and devoid of organization, background and usually are either too basic or start at a level where some have to 'look up to see the bottom'. This book, like Cliffe's 'Table Saw Techniques' is so very well organized, that it is almost like a novel, with excellent transition between topics. The book starts with a review of the history of the Radial Arm Saw, what models are available today, operation, accessories, and very, very important SAFETY hints. The radial arm saw like many power tools is dangerous if used improperly. Cliffe gives an excellent treatment of safety measures, and techniques to work safely. For example, his treatment of the use of a moulding head, a procedure which many bulletin boards reflect fear or anecdotal horror stories is great...I read his hints and have successfully completed what many consider too 'hairy'. I'm a hobbyist not a cabinet maker. After the thorough treatise on the techniques, the book concludes with many detailed plans for woodworking projects. Well worth the investment and should be on your Christmas 'Wish List'. It was on mine a few years ago and my wife listened.

                    Book Description

In this enthralling and atmospheric tale of murder, revenge and redemption, a young American struggles to make sense of a world he does not understand, where the price of acceptance may be murder. John Vanbrugh is an outsider in the England of 1905: A determined but unsuccessful American architect, he has moved to London to make a new life for himself and his wife, Margaret. When he receives an unexpected summons to meet the dazzling Duchess of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace, he is skeptical. The young duchess, Vanbrugh comes to understand, has her reasons. Like him, she is American-born: Consuelo Vanderbilt, one of the richest debutantes in America. Seemingly on impulse, the duchess hires Vanbrugh to renovate her rooms at Blenheim - a plum job Vanbrugh accepts. He and his wife join the weekend party at Blenheim, a group that includes the foul-tempered duke; his young cousin Winston Churchill; the society painter John Singer Sargent; the duchess' mother and American suffragette Mrs. O.H.P.Belmont; Gladys Deacon, an American friend of the duchess'; and the enigmatic Catholic Monsignor Vay de Vaya. Almost as soon as he begins work at Blenheim, Vanbrugh uncovers a series of unsettling letters that hint at a long-concealed deceit. As he tries to grasp the meaning of this discovery, a sketchbook owned by Sargent is stolen and a young housemaid is found in the courtyard, strangled. It is then that Vanbrugh realizes he is caught in a maze of duplicity and manipulation with no way out. Struggling to uncover the treachery he sees around him, Vanbrugh is forced to re-evaluate everything he thought about Blenheim, himself, even the very nature of truth. Part mystery, part gothic morality tale, A Weekend at Blenheim is a compelling, mesmerizing, deeply satisfying novel. AUTHORBIO: J.P. Morrissey is an editor and writer who lives outside New York City.

My favorite genres are mysteries and historical fiction and so I looked forward to immersing myself at Blenheim Palace with Winston Churchill's family just after the start of the last century. What I got was a story where nearly every character, including the author/protagonist and his wife, were thoroughly unlikeable, and people were chasing each other and wrestling on top the rooftop and stuff. Do you know how some books you want to never end? Well, this was the exact opposite of that -- I couldn't wait to get it over. There was a bit of an intriguing mystery around some old letters, but the Nancy Drew-ish chasing through hallways and up and down stairs action and nasty people turned me off. My favorite line: ".. Mrs. Belmont agreed, as she bit into a French eclair with relish." There are better ways to spend a "weekend" than spending time with these unlikeable characters and improbable events.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but Lots of Flaws.......2006-07-19

I would haved given it 5 stars, but I'm one of those picky-picky readers who like their fiction in a book like this to at least be possible. By "a book like this" I mean a book dealing with real people and real places. The story takes place in a weekend, with time so elastic that it would actually take a week to accomodate all the action. In less than 48 hours, the narrator, John Vanburgh, an architect invited along with his pregnant wife to spend the weekend at Blenheim on a trumped up excuse by the Duchess of Marlborough, falls in and out of love with the Duchess, tears apart a room, has two (or three) harrowing climbs over the roof of Blenheim for various reasons. He also helps find a body, has long interrogations concerning the murder, runs thru corridors and thru rooms, tears up hallways and breaks windows, insults the Duke, has a run-in with Winston Churchill, and along with his wife, searches thru a 1000 book library, book by book in less than an hour looking for a sketch book. What with meals and sleeping and bossing around the servants, he was a busy boy. A house guest from hell. I failed to see why he got so worked up over a situation that clearly was none of his business, and his snide dismissal of the Duchess at the end of the book was rather uncalled for. Why did I enjoy it? Because it kept me guessing as to what was coming next. The charactors were all very unlikable, with the exception of Dr. Barton, his father-in-law and the servants. I decided to just suspend my credulity, and go along for the ride.

4 out of 5 stars Almost loved it.......2005-07-10

From the back cover, this book appeared to have everything I enjoy in this genre -- historical setting, 'real people' playing more than cameos, a peek behind the closed doors of the British aristocracy (names like 'Spencer' and 'Churchchill' were an obvious attraction).

I almost loved it: Other reviewers have recounted the basics of the plot, but suffice it to say that there's one point toward the end of the book where the dispicable Duke looks around at all of his weekend guests and says, "I'm so sick of you all", that I almost jumped up and cheered.

Me, too. Parts of the book were too drawn out: we got the picture -enough, already! A judicious editor should have trimmed some of the middle sections.

What I really enjoyed, however, was how refreshing it was to read a thoroughly American book, one that offers at least a couple of idealistic, decent, honorable people who were concerned about doing the right thing. That's not something you find in contemporary literature very often anymore.

Then, too, there's a not-so-subtle swipe at the decadent class structure of the British system, contrasted with a real pro-democracy, the 'value of the little guy' theme, on the part of the protagonist and his father in law. It was delightful to see someone, finally, touting values and the virtues of honesty, loyalty and integrity, even when it wasn't to their personal benefit to do so.

Great book. Very worthwhile. That said, I'm still wondering about that stink from the crypt --what on earth was THAT all about??!

4 out of 5 stars good first novel.......2004-11-05

With its famous setting and characters, A Weekend at Blenheim captures the imagination within a few pages. This is a mystery that keeps the reader guessing to the end, an easy, entertaining read with an intricate and intriguing plot. Not great literature, but imaginative, fun, and well-written.

5 out of 5 stars Dont listen to Publishers Weekly.......2004-06-21

I think for a first novel this is a terrific book. I can criticize the writing, especially since the author is an editor who works in publishing in New York. But dont let that stop you from reading the book! Here's what another editor in New York publishing (right down the street, Mr. Morrissey) thinks:

The description was wonderful. Far from skipping over it as I do with other writers, I read it two or three times so as not to miss any detail. Either the author spent a lot of time at Blenheim or he did a great job on the research. Not everybody can recreate the scene for readers without making it sound like hard work. It's a gift. Maybe some of the dialogue wont exactly set the world on fire, but I think here one has to cut the author some slack. It's not easy to reproduce conversation from a hundred years ago, and make it sound the way people actually talked. On top of that, he is writing about both British and American characters, who would speak differently. The chase scenes through the palace and all that action on the roof should keep people turning pages right to the end. Some reviewers complained about the characters. I'd like to make the point that sometimes people in a book, especially a narrator, are there to facilitate the story. The "character" everything revolves around can be a place or an inanimate object. I think this book is really about Blenheim and the effect it has on the people in the story. It gets rive stars from me and went a long way to make my weekend.

                                        Book Description

This guide traces both the subject's life and his "system" - a series of deep acting exercises that focus on relaxation, concentration, and emotional memory. Along the way the authors show how Stanislavski's influence continues today.

5 out of 5 stars A great book that fills in the gaps left by the METHOD.......2000-10-23

One of the worst things that happened to acting was the development in America of the infamous and incomplete "METHOD" propagated by a well known acting school that was popular amongst many actors including James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Steve McQueen - I wonder what the link is between their training and their deaths - is the METHOD psychologically sound and safe?

The Method is based on one of two books written by Constantin Stanislavski - a long break between publishing the two volumes (somewhere in the order of 10 years) saw the USA get a glimpse at part of what Stanislavski meant ... this little book helps fill in the gaps..

As a drama teacher I have found this an invaluable resource in teaching students about "method acting", realism, emotional recall, etc - it clearly articulates the concepts at a level that just about anyone can deal with... the pictures and the brevity of text make it an enticing read for students and teacher alike...

do yourself a favour - get this little gem and check out others in the series.
