Good for down time.......2007-01-04
Son broke a bone in his foot and was going to be off the court for about 8 weeks. We decided to utilize the time improving strength, reflex reaction time, etc. We took this book to a personal trainer who used many of the ideas during the hiatus. Results - he went back to the court with a stronger serve, stronger strokes and better endurance than he went out with. So good in fact, that he continues to work with his personal trainer in addition to his on court time.

I gave this book 4 stars mainly beause here is nothing out there like it. Power tennis training is not even close to the coverage of this book. This book is for serious players in good shape already. I would say it is designed more for Juniors and Satalite hopefulls than the weekend player. If your working on the gut and hoping this will bring your game up you need to do more work before getting started on this book. It has great streching tips and fantastic agility drills and explains how to train based on playing tennis. What it contains is very good. The training programs however are written by people with no real world lives. They are all pros or have been around pros without I would suspect a normal 9-5 family and job. It references a lot of weight training equipment that must be in a nice gym. It covers and gets into more tournament fitness building strategy rather than an average weekend game. A modified version for the average guy would be nice. A very big dissapointment was nutrition. I was really hoping to learn when to eat, what to eat before a match etc. This book covered nothing about nutrition. It talked about water and sodium, thats it. If your really into tennis and run three times a week already and work out some, you can benefit from this book. The fitness test is good and gives you goals to shoot for but you better be self motivated. If they add two more chapters; nutrition and a modified weekend players life, home workout system this book would be perfect.
Excellent Reference for Tennis Conditioning.......2000-07-17
Paul Roetert was formerly the Head of Sport Science for USTA Player Development in Key Biscayne. He has been instrumental in advancing US tennis scientifically and shows why here. This book was created for the tennis player and coach and perhaps is the best book on the market regarding conditioning for tennis (there are 3 or 4 other inferior books). For myself, I think it is a bit basic (a primer) and doesn't cover enough scientific applications and how to scientifically create a conditioning program. Anyhow, I think that is for the German DTB (e.g., look up Richard Schoenborn books). Otherwise, Paul and Todd (a top trainer) would limit their audience. The authors produce an excellent resource for most serious players perhaps applicable to all. This book should rank among the top ten tennis books written in the past decade.

Safe & Scientific Conditioning.......1999-05-10
Most conditioning methods recommended by even some of the leading lights in tennis have been a regurgitation of methods which was non-progressive and relied heavily on `past, successful experiences'. Afterall, he won with those exercises and practices, so I don't see why .... This book stays closely to the latest research so that the exercises thus recommended are safe, time-saving, objective and practical - the last a criteria for adaptation into actual court strategy w/o too much of a hindrance. Language is simple. Coaches worth their salt should have a serious look at it before dismissing it as another scientific hoodwink by a bunch of scientists who'd never played the real game, except after work.

Amazing amount of info on the subject.......2007-07-19
Reading this book amazed me of how much more there is to training for tennis vs yesteryears. You can actually see how this fitness quick has taken over the ATP. When you compare Nadal, Djokovic, Roddick, and Blake to past champions such as McEnroe, Smith, Ashe, Laver, Newcomb, and Gimeno; Today's guys look like hulks vs a bunch of twigs. The overall body development including the quads and the upper body is now completely different.
This book tells you in detail how to get there. This includes improving every area of fitness including aerobic and anaerobic endurance and strength, flexibility, speed, and agility. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific area of fitness. Chapters outlining training schedule of champions are also informative. The chapter on how to prevent tennis injury is also excellent.
If you are a serious player or a coach, you will get a lot out of this book.

A softer, more erudite Conan is to be found here. "My dearest wishes","My beloved".
This book lags a little in the second half, not coincidentally I think with the lack of Belit.
Conan goes in search of the Queen of the Black Coast's family for her, and ends up fighting yet another Stygian sorcerer.
Dumbest monarch of the year award to Mentuphera.
"Why, if the Sun Master can do no better than Conan, what is to fret about?"
These Set worshippers never learn, it seems.
Entertaining, but a Missed Opportunity.......2007-02-19
Anderson's story of Conan's time as captain of a pirate ship alongside his love, Belit, is an interesting one, but I can't help feeling that it was a missed opportunity. Very few Conan pastiches continue directly from one of Howard's original pulp stories from the 1930s. This one does, picking up from Howard's "Queen of the Black Coast".
While the plot for this novel was entertaining, dealing with family ties, sacrifice, prophecy, and different stripes of power-hungry sorcerers, Anderson really missed the chance to deeply explore Belit, one of the most compelling female characters Robert E. Howard ever introduced into Conan's life.
Anderson does a decent job in capturing Conan's personality, but suffers the same difficulty many authors after Howard have in authentically nailing it as well as the creator.
The supporting characters and major villains are very well-formed and Anderson provides decent descriptions of the environment so the reader feels immersed in the setting.
The story contains a lot of action, but it does feel a wee bit patchwork in places with ideas being introduced but not fully explored. That said, the ending of the novel is quite good - a splendid, buliding, non-stop gauntlet of evil menace leading to an appropriate twist and a satisfying climax.
A very good Conan pastiche that left a bit on the table by not exploring Belit more deeply.

I was feeling the need to read something different, so as I walked past the new books section at the library I saw a Conan book. I've never read Conan, but one of my friends is a giant fan, so I picked it up.
The plot was pretty simple (hero gets even with sworn enemies who have wronged him in many ways, along the way he gets to use a magical weapon and fulfill some prophecy), but it was entertaining enough, especially in the middle. The ending was way too abrupt (he completes all of the above parenthetical accomplishments in 35 pages) and the language was too clunky. I realize its a style thing, but its like Mr. Anderson sat in front of his typewriter with a thesarous and looked for the more macho version of each verb used to describe Conan's behavior. He never throws anything, he heaves it. He always cleaves skulls, rather than splits them. I got tired of it rather quickly.

Due to the machinations of the evil sorcerer Tothapis, Set the reptile God cruelly rules Stygia. Set warns Tothapis that a threat to their well being comes from the alliance between Conan and Belit, who met in sword to sword combat, felt an attraction and joined sides. Belit leads pirates trying to free her people from the reptileýs rule while Conan lays back providing strategic advice to her.
Everything changes when Conan finds the Axe of Veranghi. Instead of just advising, he begins to take charge. Along side Belit, Conan leads her force in combat as they close in on a final confrontation with the reptile God and his wicked minion including the powerful Tothapis.
The great Poul Anderson takes readers on a journey into the Cimmerian world of Robert E. Howard. The story line of CONAN THE REBEL starts a bit slower than usual for our hero meaning body counts that would make Westmoreland and MacNamara envious. This enables the audience to understand better the support cast, but not why Conan seems more like California mellow than the wild barbarian that is expected of him. Once Conan returns to his normal tendencies, the head count geometrically grows and the action with it. Though a fine tale, purists will feel this is not Mr. Howard or even the Marvel comic.

As with several other authors (De Camp, Carter, Jordan, Carpenter), Poul Anderson takes a retrospective stab at recreating Robert E Howard's Hyborian world and chief hero - Conan the Barbarian. Anderson spins an entertaining yarn with all the elements you would expect in a Fantasy novel. However, Anderson, as with most 'modern' author, softens the barbarians character to be more suitable to contemporary audiences. While this is certainly laudable to remove sexist overtones (remember, Howard was writing in the 20s & 30s), it fails to capture the flavor of the original.

Pretty Good Tale In The Conan Post-Howard Series........2000-06-08
As Poul Anderson's lone entry in the Conan series I was looking forward to seeing what he does with the character.
Overall he did a nice job but unfortunately he kept Conan in a lovesick mood thoughout the novel. With plenty of opportunities for 'casual copulation' Conan is in constant conflict. He loves his mate, but has been away from her for so long it is driving him crazy. With such opportunities and beautiful women all around, Conan should have taken at least one!
Oh well, so Conan's morals were different in this novel than what I am used to, still it was a good tale. Unlike so many of these post-Howard Conan tales, careful construction of the other characters in the novel are obviously made. The three friends Conan meets and adventures with, his lover, and his enemies are introduced and developed throughout the story quite nicely. Near the end of the story you wish that the party could forget their pasts and just adventure together on an entirely new adventure!
One of the better Conan novels I have read so far, it contains gods, magical weapons, women, adventure, and sorcery...everything that should be in a Conan novel (but sometimes is not!).
Still, compared to more original Sword and Sorcery novels like Brian Lumley's Khash stories or any of Howard's original fiction, this is just an average yarn to revisit a favorite old character.

Ive had this book 4 years it was out of date then. I recently bought The Renewable Energy Handbook by kemp which is far more up todate. 8 years in Solar Electrics is a lifetime, the equipment shown and discussed is fit for a museum,sure its solar electricy for the indepedant home, as a model t ford is for cruising the motorway,save your money!

Still Good.......2005-11-27
I bought this book in 2005, almost 20 years after the first publication of the book. I went through a couple of emotional phases while reading the book. First I thought this was a great book: it has so many practical details and insights. When I got to the part on system controls and routing the power, I realized that this part is probably fairly weak because of the passage of time. Then when I looked at a few other more recent publications such as The Renewable Energy Handbook for Homeowners, by Kemp published in 2003, I realized that the present book is still a solid investment for someone interested in solar-electric. A lot of the basic information is still valid and it is more a case of prices changing and some of the technology being a bit easier to use. I like the fact that the book just concentrates on solar. There are no diversions or philosophical discussions on wind power or similar to confuse the situation. However, if you are a homeowner and want to look at all the alternatives, I suggest the newer book by Kemp, but that book is a bit thin on solar-electric so the present book is still needed. Kemp has many good ideas on insulation and conservation. In any case, the present book is down to earth practical stuff on solar: how it works and how you install. So to make a long story short I recommend the book as a buy.
The book is written by Steven J. Strong an MA from Harvard and someone who has worked as a solar energy consultant before writing the book. He describes a number of his projects and they are scattered thoughout the book.
The book has 10 chapters and it starts with how photovoltaic (PV) cells were developed and how they are manufactured. He explains how the atmosphere itself absorbs some light energy. He explains the eficiency of the PV cells, and how to position the cells to maximize power. Then he goes on to explain the manufacturing processes in detail.
Chapter 2 covers the design of the system of cells, controls, and storage of the energy. Storage itself can be a simple idea such as pumping water into a holding tank from a well during the sunny hours, but usually it is more complicated and uses a battery system or returns the power to the grid for credit, if the house can be connected to the conventional supply system. He explains a lot of these details with references to geographic location, be it in Arizona, or New england, or on a mountain in Colorado.
Chapeter 3 is a lesson on how to wire the modules and arrays together so you can get the right voltage and power combination.
Chapter 4 covers batteries and power regulation. He has many pictures and tables showing availbale products. These of course must be updated with current products but it gives a starting point for the reader.
Chapter 5 is very short and covers power inverters and attachment to the grid. An inverter converts DC voltage from the PV cells into AC for the appliances as in a conventional home. Also it is needed for connection to the grid to get power credits. Finally, he presents some options for power back up generation.
Chapter 6 explains how to conserve energy and then how to match your requirements with the size of the solar system, i.e.: how to determine how much power you need.
Chapter 7 and 8 describe how to design a system connected to the grid, or to design a system completely standing on its own. He gives examples with photographs of existing installations and this includes seasonal variations in power generation.
The last two chapter 9 and 10 are on the actual installion of the components along with maintenance tips.
The book contains many photographs, charts, lists of suppliers for parts, and it has many example calculations on how the power is produced, stored, and what it costs. A lot of this information can be updated by the reader using the web.
This book is now a bit dated and the reader will have to update the information when buying parts, but overall it is still surprisingly good. 5 stars.

Last year Humphrey Carpenter published his official biography of Dennis Potter. Roughly 500 pages long Carpenter's book was a disappointing mixture of synopsis of Potters' plays, edited quotes from interviews Potter made to other journalists and interviews with people who have known Potter. Carpenter decides early on that the key fact to Potters' life was his sexual abuse, and the rest of his life is viewed from this angle. His remarks on Cold Lazarus are only concerned with a few, strange sexual remarks.
I mention this because it makes such a contrast to Gilvert's book. At times it is clumsy, wooden overwritten and a bit unfocused, and yes, a lot of it doesn't hold together but it is distinguished by a genuine, though healthily critical approach to his life.Gilbert understands Poters' importance as both a literary figure and a creative figure and writes passionately about both. Potter was a brilliant, difficult man and although he has not yet got the brilliant, difficult review he deserves, Gilbert's goes a long way to understanding the man and his extraordinary writing.
