Riveting. A look into the future from a time before all the turmoil in todays world started.

3 out of 5 stars Typical Brown.......2006-08-13

Again Dale Brown shows his vile distaste for any service but the Air Force. Unfortunately, his love of a service without a mission blinds him to the capabilities and professionalism of the other services. Book after book he thumps his chest for an air service he loves, but one that has failed to see reality of the real world. Understanding that this is fiction...his venom for his sister services pours through his writing, turning the other services into a reflection of the service he loves. I only give this book 3 Stars because Brown's writing is still a fast paced thriller.

5 out of 5 stars Satan's Tail.......2006-03-11

Although this series, to me, is not quite as good as the "Old Dog" series, it is only a partial step down. The story is a continuation of the same major characters, and they are quite good and very interesting individuals. It is fast paced, has plenty of action, and a few tear-jerker momemts. If you are a Dale Brown addict, as I am, you won't want to miss this book!!

Very good book! Exciting reading! Would recommend it to all Dale Brown fans.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2005-12-23

This book had everything that a person who likes these type of books is looking for. Non stop action, multiple storylines, and it was very hard to put down once I got started. Dale Brown did a great job on this book and anyone who has liked his books in the past will love this one.

                  Book Description

Cornell Woolrich published his first novel in 1926, and for four decades his fiction riveted the reading public with mystery, suspense, and horror. America's most popular pulps-Dime Detective, Black Mask, and Detective Fiction Weekly-published hundreds of his stories. Classic films like Hitchcock's Rear Window, Truffaut's The Bride Wore Black and Mississippi Mermaid, Tournier's Black Alibi, and Siodmak's Phantom Lady, as well as dozens of other movies, were based on his work. Novels like Deadline at Dawn, Rendezvous in Black, and Night Has a Thousand Eyes have won him the epithet "father of noir." Every one of the countless many who have read and loved the work of Cornell Woolrich will welcome and applaud this publication of a new collection of tales-the first in nearly two decades-by the greatest writer of suspense fiction in the twentieth century. Woolrich lived a life of such deep despair and utter terror that he could do little except put those fears onto the printed page. In the masterfully wrought suspense of this volume's twenty stories, readers can enjoy works written at the height of Woolrich's powers, as well as many never before published in book form before now.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars A Sensory Writer.......2007-08-30

It's easy to see why Woolrich is considered a pioneer--as in first, or nearly so--of the noir mystery genre. His prose is terse, clean, with few if any throwaway or mere transition sentences or paragraphs. Nor does he employ much dialogue, preferring mainly description to tell his stories; dialogue generally gives the reader respite from deduction.

In which sense this book of short stories is not for everyone, because it requires an attentive reader, one willing to enter the detailed flow of the writer's simple but elegant prose. On top of which, Woolrich is what I call a sensory writer (in the Jungian sense of psychological types). His descriptions present sounds, smells, light and dark and colors ... Not that he can't sum up a state of mind with a memorable turn of phrase. He certainly can. But this too requires attention: you never know when one of his descriptive gems will come.

This book was my introduction to Woolrich, and I look forward to seeing what he can do at novelistic length. I Think, Therefore Who Am I?

                  4 out of 5 stars High anxiety........2006-11-06

The legendary Cornell Woolrich was an exceedingly lonely individual whose life was dominated by intense feelings of guilt, anxiety and fear. These are the self same emotions he was able to successfully transfer to the written page as he skillfully composed stories calculated to manipulate readers at a very visceral level. His stories unfold with a relentless build up of suspense and dread even as the plotting often defies plausibility and common sense.

Woolrich biographer Francis Nevin did a great job in selecting the 14 short stories that are reprinted in this very appealing book. Each one unfolds smoothly and each one demonstrates the author's remarkable ability to tantalize readers with a writing style that can only be described as spellbinding.

Night and Fear is a wonderful collection of short stories guaranteed to hold your interest. For best effect, read it at night preferably when you are alone. And don't skip the introduction, it's a good one.

4 out of 5 stars Taut suspense fiction.......2006-02-03

When the "hard-boiled" mystery authors from the early 1900s are listed, usually the names that stand out are Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Although not as well known, Cornell Woolrich belongs in the same group as the other pair. His stories that were adapted into movies are often the best known: good adaptations like Rear Window and The Leopard Man (based on Black Alibi) and bad ones like Mrs. Winterbourne (based on I Married a Dead Man) and Original Sin (based on Waltz into Darkness).

One big reason that Woolrich is less well-known is his lack of immortal characters: there is no Philip Marlowe, Sam Spade or Nick and Nora Charles in his books; instead, each story stands apart with its own unique characters. As noted in the introduction to Night and Fear, the lack of series characters adds a level of uncertainty; you're never certain whether you'll get an upbeat or downbeat ending. And in this collection of short stories, you do get both.

Like Woolrich's novels, his short stories have a definite noirish quality. With the novels, this means antiheroes who seem to move slowly and inevitably towards doom; although there is action, the emphasis seems to be on the characters and their self-destruction. For these short stories, the noir elements are the dark urban environments and the violence and corruption that comes with them. Night and Fear is an appropriate title; it seems like most of these tales take place long after dusk, in a realm inhabited not by ghosts but more tangible evils.

As a writer, Woolrich is a better novelist than a short story writer. There is little wrong with these stories, but they are merely pure suspense, and the characters are not all deep. There are a few, however, that stand out, such as the workhorse cop constantly outshined by his boyhood friend or the detective who devises an elaborate form of revenge for a cop-killer who successfully had another executed for his crime. But most stories are exercises in tension: a guy and his girlfriend are at the movies when he notices the man next to her is a wanted killer; a young child is intent on finding a killer to help his detective father keep his job; and others.

So, although I'm giving this book only four stars, it is still a very good book; it's just compared to Woolrich's five-star novels, this collection isn't as good. Nonetheless, for those who enjoy old-style, hard-boiled mysteries, this is a must-read.

5 out of 5 stars Night and Fear.......2005-07-18

Published in 2004 to commemorate the centenary of Cornell Woolrich's birth, `Night and Fear" contains 14 short stories that had not, until now, been included in any anthology of his work. In the Introduction editor Francis M. Nevins says of Woolrich, `He was the Poe of the twentieth century and the poet of its shadows.'

And that, in my opinion, pretty much nails it. Although, of course, there are differences. Poe's tales always seem to take place in drafty mansions dimly lit by guttering candles, his characters slowly going mad by morbid introspection. Woolrich's characters, on the other hand, are out in and a part of the larger world. Creeping madness is not what threatens them. Rather it's freakish, capricious Chance that will put a valuable string of diamonds in a sugar bowl at a table in a greasy spoon diner. At your table. It's the malevolent Chance that sends the death dealing thug, who had been frantically looking for that hot ice before you chanced upon it, out to your side in the shadows of that diner. To paraphrase Mr. Nevins again, the typical Woolrich hero cannot move forward, or backward, or even stand still.

According to a web site that usually gets such things right, Woolrich's stories have been made into movies sixty-six times, probably most successfully with Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 Rear Window. He has often been called, along with Raymond Chandler, the `father of noir.' There's a breathless, fast-paced quality to many, most, of the stories in this collection that make them seem natural for a cinematic treatment. As a rule the setting is urban, the characters are flawed and danger is imminent. In other words, a typical noir setting.

Most of the stories are taken from pulp magazines and, as far as I can tell, probably won't hold up to great critical scrutiny. You can only stretch credibility so far until it snaps, and Woolrich doesn't seem to know or much care about its breaking point. That flaw, if it is a flaw, didn't bother me much. I enjoyed these stories immensely.

5 out of 5 stars A master, even when not at his best.......2004-07-18

When I was a boy I loved Cornell Woolrich and I'm old enough to remember Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine publishing "For the Rest of her Life" and "New York Blues." I was shocked when he died, straight off the twin triumphs of "The Dark Side of Love" and "Ten Faces of Cornell Woolrich." Now as I read the stories Mr. Nevins has collected for "Night and Fear," I'm a little puzzled as to why I loved him so much as a youngster, but out of respect to my memories I give this book five stars. I think frankly the collections CW published while he was alive have a bit more authenticity, even if the biography explains how different editors and publishers chose the arrangement of those books even more than did Woolrich himself. And then again Nevins really wants to sell the "Noir" angle on Woolrich, and thus downplaying the gay pastoral fabulist of something like "Stranglers Serenade" or "The Black Path of Fear." Indeed no one but a gay man could have written the famous "Black Curtain," nor the fragment of a novel that Lawrence Block later completed, "Into the Night." However that's just my two cents and reflects probably my own dark vision as much as anything of Woolrich's.

"Night and Fear" collects a whole bunch of pulp fiction that truly has some serious ups and downs, but when Woolrich is hot (as in "Cigarette" or the aforementioned "New York Blues", he is smoking! Good work to all concerned. I hope there are further collections, for the barrel has been bottomed out yet.

                          Book Description

Old Magazines, Second Edition, will delight both collectors and dealers. Author Richard E. Clear has 30 years of experience dealing in periodicals, and wrote his first book on magazines in 1974. Magazines from many different areas are included: movie, trade, fashion, farm, sports, and more, and over 300 new color photos have been added to this edition, representing the thousands of magazines available. The book focuses on the more common, easily recognized and attainable copies rather than rare issues. Each listing includes information such as title, size, volume, publisher, dates published, all known names of the magazine, and a realistic market value. Because old magazines often span large periods and appear in literally thousands of issues, Clear gives criteria for spotting the more valuable issues. Included in this new edition is a list of illustrators with information about where to find their work, a suggested grading guide, a list of paper dolls by name and where they can be found, and a ten-page section on advertisements.

Nothing against this publication, but it was not what I was looking for. I thought it would give the value of individual issues of specific magazines which it did for what I would consider antique magazines. However, there was very little information provided on old issues of contemporary magazines.

4 out of 5 stars SLICK PACKAGE WITH A FEW FLAWS.......2006-02-17

Old Magazines Identification and Price Guide is written by Richard Clear and advised by David T. Alexander, two long time dealers with decades of experience in the field of collecting magazines and pulps. The first thing that stands out about this book is its attractive look. It's magazine-sized, printed in full color on thick, glossy stock. Three vintage magazine covers are printed per page and at 288 pages (NOT 224 as Amazon states In the listing) you get almost 900 color cover reproductions. To me that alone is worth the price of the book. So many very rare magazine covers are included...from popular things like Life, The Shadow, and Mad, to obscure titles like Camera Craft, Electrical Review, Gun Molls, Jolly Joker, and Peep Show.

Clear uses multiple sources to arrive at prices in the guide including surveys of dealers, computer listing, online auctions, and his own thirty plus years of experience. Pricing for long running magazines is done by span of years. For example Life Magazines from 1950 - 1959 are listed at $5 - $10 each while those from 1960- 1972 are listed at $2.50 to $5.00 each. Even with thousands of magazines listed, evidently no guide can be complete and exhaustive. As a collector of monster magazines I was a bit disappointed to see so many omitted from the pages of the book. While a few such as Famous Monsters of Filmland and Monster World are included, many others are not. Fangoria, Scarlet Street, Midnight Marquee, FilmFax, and Cult Movies are all missing. Perhaps these are just too new, but that doesn't explain why older publications like Monster Parade, Castle of Frankenstein, Shriek, and Horror Monsters are also not included. Likewise, Clear includes some of Marvel Comics 1970's horror magazines such as Legion of the Monsters and Vampire Tales, but omits Dracula Lives and Tomb of Dracula.

I found the prices to be a bit inconsistent from my own experiences. Warren titles like Creepy and Eerie are way too low, particularly on the early issues which feature Frazetta covers. On the other hand, prices on Famous Monsters and Vampirella seem right on the nose so go figure...

Clear does make special notations for magazines which featured the work of notable writers like Edgar Rice Burroughs and Norman Rockwell and prices the magazines accordingly. Unfortunately one thing sacrificed to print all these wonderful covered was more detail about writers and artists. For example, Weird Tales which feature stories by Robert E. Howard or H.P. Lovecraft go for significantly more than others of the same period, yet Clear does not note this, nor does he mention Weird Tales covers by Margaret Brundage. Oddly though, Clear does make mention of the stories written by Robert E. Howard for Fight Magazine. These inconsistencies do make for a somewhat perplexing guide.

Still based upon the sheer number of quality covers printed and the number of titles it does include, the book does prove to be a valuable, if not complete resource for magazine collectors.

I bought this book because it has nine hundred covers, printed on glossy paper, three to a page (mostly two and a half inches deep) and best of all, in color. The listing is alphabetical with the magazine title, publisher and prices relating to the life of the title. This arrangement makes for some odd visual surprises Jungle Stories (1954) is facing Kimball's Dairy Farmer (1917) or Everbody's Poultry Magazine (1916) facing Exciting Detective (1940).

The color covers are a bit of an extra for a book that is really a listing but you get a chance to see how publishers presented their newsstand wares over the last hundred years or so. All type covers from the nineteenth century change into illustrations in the first half of the twentieth century and finally into photographic covers that we see today.

How accurate the prices are I can't say but apart from first issues most titles seem to be very reasonable. So if you are going magazine hunting in shops or car-boot sales it would be useful to take this paperback as a guide before you haggle.

If you like looking at magazine covers check out these two titles, ' Front Page: Covers of the Twentieth Century' by Stephanie Duperray and Raphaele Vidaling, or the sumptuous 'Great Magazine Covers of the World' by Partica Kery, both books have hundreds of colored covers arranged in meaningful chapters and finally 'Cover Story' by Steven Heller and Loise Fili, a beautifully designed paperback showing two hundred American magazine covers from 1900 thru 1950.

5 out of 5 stars For Artist of all ages and stages.......2006-09-20

This is an excellent book for both the beginner and the advanced artist. The writing is direct and to the point. Both children and adults can use this book, so a lot of other books are not necessary. The fundimental of drawing are covered with advanced techniques and portraiture included. The lessons and reminders work.

1 out of 5 stars Good for kiddies.......2006-03-08

If you are the mother of young children, or homeschooling your youngster to do art, then this is quite possibly the book for you. Assuming you have little or no knowledge of drawing, it takes you through the basics, in easy, child-level steps. I've used it with my little boy, and he's showing great talent, at least according to this book - it's hard to tell at this age. Book seems a bit limited, though, but at least for my boy the level of language is usefully simple.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks to Ms. South.......2006-02-07

This is a well written book that will give the reader good ideas to try. If you are a "non-artist" like I am, but want to keep trying ... Read this book. Also, please check out her informative column at "http://drawsketch.about.com/".

1 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2006-01-17

I was given this book for Christmas. Fortunately I have a 7-year old nephew who is the right age to appreciate it. Not long to his birthday :)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners!.......2005-01-14

I've always been fascinated with freehand drawing, but unfortunately I have absolutely no talent for it. As an engineer, my drawings are highly structured with limited opportunity for creativeness. My wife, however, has a young niece who is showing real signs of talent in drawing, and we wanted to help her unleash her abilities and see how good she can be. I've seen some of the "Everything" books, and they're usually pretty good, so we ordered The Everything Drawing Book. The book is organized very well as it covers the most basic matters (drawing materials and how to use them) through various topics, including pen and ink, charcoal, landscapes and nature, animals, and people. The book is so well written and organized that Ms. South almost succeeded in tempting me to try my hand! In any case, my wife is going to have a go with her niece and see if we have a budding young artist in the family.

That's not to say that the book is suitable only for children. I think that any adult who wants to learn to draw would enjoy this book very much. Highly recommended.
