Customer Reviews:
Very useful book.......2004-11-11
This book really lifted my animal-drawings several levels.
I think it has very well-explained step-by-step lessons. Both on seperate parts of animals leading to a whole animal-drawing. Lee Hammond has a certain way of leading you, so you feel comfortable and yet challenged all the way.
This book will inspire you to draw more!.......2000-03-12
I read Lee Hammond's book, "Draw Real Animals" and I think it was really really worth my money. She discovered a blending technique that makes drawings look real. What's nice about this book is that she presents before and after drawings of kids (and they look real). When I first tried her technique, I got INSTANT RESULTS! Before when I used to look at a paper and try to draw, I thought, "no, this won't work" But now, every drawing I finish looks like a masterpiece! Buy this book, it will inspire you to draw more!
A great book.......1999-08-17
Lee Hammond's books stand out above the rest and this one is no exception. I'm staring at my drawing of a tiger she presents in the book. It is so good that I can't believe I did it. If you want to learn to draw realistic animals get her book.
This is great! A+++.......1999-03-28
Oh My Gosh! This book is amazing! When I had tried to draw animals in the past, I always turned up with bunches of rough, uneven lines that had a sketchy appearence. After studying this book and practicing the techniques within it, I created this beautiful drawing of a horse which I have now framed. I always get lots of great comments about it and a lot of my friends ask who I bought it from, since they can't believe that I did it! I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to improve their drawing skills, or to anyone interested in bringing out their artisticside that want a place to start.
A wonderful book.......1998-12-05
This book is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn to draw real looking animals. I have done so much with the techniques this book has taught me. I would recommend it to anyone.

Sergio Aragone's final collection of MAD comic strips.......2004-03-09
It sure is strange to see the art of Sergio Aragones blown up to one panel per page given that he is the "MAD" Magazine artist who does the little cartoons buried in the borders fondly known as "Marginal Thinking." To help readers along in getting through "Sergio Aragones' Next MAD Book," the numerical sequence of each page in a particular bit provided in a little circled number at the top. Otherwise you would have some trouble in figuring out what is the set-up and what is the punch line in this collection, the sixteenth and I believe final such collection.
A native of Castellon, Spain whose family moved to Mexico during the Spanish Civil War, Sergio Aragones has the well-deserved reputation of being known as the fastest cartoonist in the world. He game to New York City and did his first bits for "MAD" Magazine, beginning with "A Mad Look at the U.S. Space Effort" in the January 1963 issue. Then when he was in the 1980s Aragon?s and writer Mark Evanier (to whom this collection is dedicated) created "Groo the Wanderer," the best pastiche to date of the sword & sorcery genre and a success story as a creator-owned comic book.
All of these bits are done without dialogue, with thought balloons in place of the traditional word balloons. The humor consists mostly of gentle gibes and simple ironies, such as the man who climbs all the way to the top of a mountain to talk to a wise man only to discover he is one mountain over. Aragon?s is also a master of the cut, where the point of view suddenly changes to deliver the punch line. Of course, since this is Sergio Aragones that means the back of this paperback includes a shameless plus for his other 15 books, form "Viva MAD" to "Totally MAD." The only downside to this sub-series of "MAD" collections is that you can get through this entire book in just a few minutes, a subtle reminder perhaps that the humor of the master of "Marginal Thinking" should be taken in small doses.

Book Description
When a parent is poet, the child becomes a muse-often wondrous, sometimes terrifying. This anthology explores the vast emotional landscape of parenting, from the serenity of innocent naps to the howling anguish of early deaths. Here are poetic mothers and fathers (and children), across cultures both ancient and modern, trying to make sense-and art-from the sublime mystery and relentless grind of living with children.
Never has there been a collection that so honestly speaks to the parents' perspective, where moments of tenderness-such as a father abandoning "the most divinely inspired poem" to feed his son-have their counterpoints:
-a nursing mother-poet, who has not slept in 400 nights, going "gradually mad" or-a mother's realization that her daughter would "drive nails into my tongue"
Remember those older friends we used to envy,
brilliant and glittering with beauty,
Who refused to have children,
not about to sacrifice their careers;
Who refused the mess, the entrapment,
as we toiled over chores and homework,
worried about measles and money-
Have you seen them lately?
They no longer converse in sparkling cadenzas.
They are obsessed with their little dog
who piddles on the Oriental rug,
who throws up on the bedspreadâ¦
They way they caress him makes you fairly ill;
the way they call him, "Baby."

Customer Reviews:
"So how're the kids?".......2003-01-25
This anthology, the first in a planned series of anthologies to explore common themes, is a look at the role of parenting and the intimacies of parent and child, as experienced by forty-two distinguished poets.
The publisher notes that the poems, in a variety of ways, answer the oft heard question, "So how're the kids?" This they do and then some. This collection will break your heart, cause you to laugh out loud and bring back memories of anger, fear, despair, wonder, love, joy and a host of other recollections on the experience of parenthood that will linger in your thoughts long after you have finished the book.
The poets come from an eclectic background as diverse as a Chinese village, the woods of the Pacific Northwest, Norway, Poland, a contemporary American city and discuss a wide array of parenthood related themes such as the father-child relationship; new parenthood; illness & loss; political issues; mother-child relationship; and breastfeeding. One of my favorite piems is by gregory Orr titled Father's Song that contains the following lines and present a feeling I suspect has been felt by many parents...and children: "I try to teach her caution, She tries to teach me risk."
The poem by Anna Swir, Maternity, contains the following passage that exposes the diverse feelings of one contemplating parenthood and its mysteries: "You are not going to defeat me" I say. "I won't be an egg which you would crack in a hurry for the world, a footbridge that you would take on the way to your life. I will defend myself."
This is a wonderful collection of poems dealing with parenting that will appeal to any reader that has ever contemplated the question "So how're the kids?"

Book Description
Renowned historian Perry Anderson takes on leading conservative, liberal and socialist thinkers in this iconoclastic volume.
In today's drastic reconfiguration of the world of ideas, how best should we treat its leading forces? Spectrum offers a critical survey of the ideas of rival intellectual groupings from the far right, the liberal center, and the Marxist left, rarely considered in the same optic. The book opens with a comparative examination of four remarkable minds of the radical right: Michael Oakeshott, Friedrich Hayek, Leo Strauss and Carl Schmitt. In the liberal and social-democratic center, it considers John Rawls, Jurgen Habermas, and Norberto Bobbio. On the Marxist left, it assesses the work of three major historians: Edward Thompson, Robert Brenner and Eric Hobsbawm, and a great philologist, Sebastiano Timpanaro.
Customer Reviews:
Uneven, but that's in the nature of the thing.......2006-01-23
Here Perry Anderson groups together a bunch of essays written over the last fifteen years or so under the concept of the political spectrum, from right to left (and then, with no compelling explanation, appends essays on the London Review of Books and his father). His essay on right wing theorists Oakshoot, Schmitt, Straus and Hayek is too deferential. His choice of leftists--Thompson, Therborn, Brenner, Timpanaro, Marquez and Hobsbawm--is a little sad. It is as if the left does not produce thinkers anymore--admittedly most of his choices skew old (although the book is loaded with comments on contemporary politics, the cycle of struggles epitomized by Seattle-Genoa-Prague goes virtually unmentioned, as do any thinkers associated with the global justice movement or the World Social Forum). His liveliest writing is about centrists like Rawls and Habermas. Apparently support of US military interventions in places like Yugoslovia is what really gets Anderson angry these days--much more so than support for neoliberal policies. These essays, and the ones on Timothy Garton Ash (filed under the right, but of a piece with the centrists in his support for the US) and Hobsbawm (the best essay about a leftist) are the most worthwhile. There are many little gems scattered elsewhere--his theory about Italian intellectual life (in the essay on Timpanaro), his preference for the memoir of the reactionary Vargas Llosa to Garcia Marquez, etc. Anderson is always interesting, and his indifference to contemporary academic techniques of intellectual history is tonic (and, depending on your taste, you may find his vocabulary, the most obscure of anyone writing in English since Nabokov, either brilliant or pretentious); but he exaggerates the importance of the end of the cold war, which has clearly left him in a funk; and, even for an English Marxist, he is ridiculously tone deaf on US politics.

Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2007-04-16
This is a GREAT book, very complete and lucid as the sky. It is revised and expanded from the earlier "Growth of the bacterial cell," and retains something of an emphasis on growth economy.
I strongly suggest the book. I am not sure "Physiology [...]" includes 100% of the material from "Growth [...]," but I see no substantial reason not to study "Physiology [...]" only.
These authors, fine scientific writers, moreover are mostly (or all) editors of the massive king-of-the-hill reference "Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium: Cellular and Molecular Biology." So they know what the hell they are doing, in a big way. But these books are far shorter and more readable than the latter; you can read em while you eat lunch. However they are written at a high level and to an impressive completeness.
I prefer this title over the David White text, not that the White book is bad at all. Whether there are more up-to-date titles in the same niche, I don't know. I do rather doubt that they could be as good as this title, especially with respect to growth economy.
This is not a book on pathogenesis or stress responses, nor does it have much depth on ecology.

Book Description
The application of new molecular methodologies in the study of bacterial behaviour and cell architecture has enabled new revolutionary insights and discoveries in these areas. While this has also raised a number of scientific mysteries about bacteria, it certainly improved our understanding of these organisms as complex and adaptive entities rather than just simple tiny buckets of enzymes. The value of this recent knowledge in bacterial physiology is not only restricted to fundamental biology, but it also extends to biotechnology and drug-discovery disciplines where understanding cell behaviour and structure is essential for better exploitation of useful bacteria and effective eradication of harmful ones. This makes a new text accommodating recent developments in bacterial physiology highly relevant to a wide range of readership including those interested in basic and applied knowledge.

Where Vacations Meet Adventures! First, Hidden Maui reviews the destination’s famed attractions. Then (more importantly!) it invites the reader to go further to “Hidden” spots other guides overlook, including small inns and local restaurants. The guide also focuses on outdoor adventures with detailed information on beaches, parks and outdoor activities. Special traveler-friendly features include hidden spots, author’s favorite picks, getaway itineraries, driving and walking tours, websites and e-mail addresses, and multiple scaled maps that zoom in on each area. Hidden Maui leads to sacred sites on Lanai, historic spots in Lahaina, and cool waterfalls along the Hana Highway. The author offers recommendations and opinionated reviews for over 110 restaurants and over 80 hotels. This updated edition includes 20 maps.
Customer Reviews:
A good place to start.......2006-08-08
When you know you're going to Maui, this is a much better option than a book that addresses all the islands at once, like its sister book, Hidden Hawaii.
There's a lot of information in here, although some of it I could have done without; if I wanted information about the culture, flora & fauna, geology, history and language, I would get a book about those things. This is supposed to be a vacation guidebook. That other stuff is extraneous, to my mind, and doesn't belong in this book.
I did find that the "hidden" places they listed were ones I had not heard of in many other places. I don't know that much of anything is actually "hidden" out there any more; it's been developed so much in the last 30 years, you won't find many places that are really and truly unknown to at least some of the tourist traffic, especially if it's published in a book that will be read by thousands of vacationers. So, taking that into consideration, I guess the book lived up to its promise there, somewhat.
I could have used some photos. There were none. But the maps were pretty good.
I got a copy of this from the library for our trip to Maui in a couple of months; I may purchase this one to take along, as I found it more user-friendly and overall more useful than many other books I checked out.
A great guide.......2006-02-14
I am not sure why the previous reviewers gave so much flak to the author for this book, because it really is an excellent guide to the island. Most people like to compare each guide for Maui to the Wizard book, but if you consider the relationship between that "other" book and the locals, then Hidden Maui by far comes out on top.
A nice guide for the island, one I'd recommend along with Maui Mile by mile and Driving Maui.
Wrong title for this book.......2005-05-18
It should be titled "Things other books talk about when describing Maui". There was not much that I found new in this book that I have not read in other Maui tour books. It had some decent descriptions and pictures, but not much more then that. I was looking for some real "hidden" places and finds, but was really disappointed.
Very Ordinary Travel Guide.......2005-01-04
Despite the title, there's nothing especially "hidden" in this book. It is a tolerably-good guide to Maui, but nothing special. Most everything in it can be found in any decent guide to the island.
Customer Reviews:
A fabulous introduction for teenagers.......2000-08-31
This is a FABULOUS introduction for teenagers to one of the best loved Christian leaders of the 20th Century. It makes "the Doctor" into a fully rounded human being. The author is his eldest grandchild, and for fans of Dr Lloyd-Jones it is great to see that he was as wonderful a grandfather as he was a world famous preacher and writer. Buy this book yourself and then buy a copy for your youth pastor - and, why not - all the teenagers in your family as well. Everyone of all ages can profit by reading this brilliant book.
Book Description
This book is a detailed study of the evolution of the canine social behavior. The author leads the reader, step by step, through the various aspects involved in the development of single social behavior patterns. This book is also a comparative study, where the reader is lead from one argument to the next with mathematical precision.
A surprising book, dismissing common believes and assumptions, and leaving the reader with simple sound explanations. A book for all students of animal behavior wishing to uncover the whys and hows of canine social behavior.
`The idea of dominance-aggression is biased. It is possible to be aggressive and dominant, but the term suggests the dog attacks because it is dominant. No dog attacks because of dominance. Dominance aims at controlling another by means of ritualized behavior, without harming or injuring it. The final attack if there is one is motivated by aggression alone.
Saying that a dog is a fear-biter is equivalent to saying that the dog does not behave purposefully. By saying that the dog shows submissive-aggression we simultaneously answer the question of how to solve the problem. The dog is submissive, which means reacting to a threat by another, giving in, and surrendering. It only becomes aggressive because its behavior does not have the desired effect. The dog is then under threat and ready to react by flight or immobility. If flight is not possible, it may freeze. Some do and die. Others resort to their last defense, they attack, and then the drive of aggression takes over. This situation is easily avoided by accepting the dog's submission or allowing it to flee.
Barely 14,000 years ago we were predators on par with out soul brother, the wolf. We too are highly aggressive animals, with sophisticated rituals and inhibition mechanisms. Recent discoveries uncovered that the learning of human languages is partially a kind of imprinting. Maybe human and animal behavior are two sides of the same evolutionary coin after all.
Customer Reviews:
Book of high scientific quality.......2001-08-06
This little book is a must for everybody who are seriously interested in ethology and especially canine behavior. Most of the social behaviors are described with examples from the wild canids, but it indeed also gives us a better understanding of the instinctual behaviors our domestic dogs show. Even though it is of high scientific quality, it is not too difficult to read and can also be read and enjoyed by regular dog owners.

Book Description
The history of China's Southeast coast has unusual features. For many centuries, overseas trade and migration, internal and external warfare, strong religious beliefs and receptiveness to foreign influences characterized this society of fiercely independent traders, fishermen and mountain farmers. The protracted struggle of Cheng Ch'eng- kung and the Southern Ming against the Ch'ing dynasty precipitated Fukien into a crisis, from which many chose to escape by emigration to the Philippines and Taiwan. Recovery was slow. ; The fourteen Western and Chinese contributors to this study focus on internal economic and social developments, overseas and religious change. From the rich Chinese and European source materials, a picture emerges of great regional diversity. Local interests and values were confronted by the central government's orthodox rule, and Western influences of Jesuits and traders. The Fukienese reaction to them produces fascinating insights into Chinese society, and a truly local history which may qualify our ideas on the Chinese Empire. REA sinologists, social and economic historians. AQ Y FB Y NFB Y RED AH MU 01-Jan-97
