I've enjoyed the Monica Ferris books since book one (Crewel World). In Embroidered Truths, John kicks Godwin DuLac out of the house - again. Betsy takes him in assuming that it will follow the usual pattern and they will make up soon. But when John's office calls to see if Godwin knows why John missed work ... well Godwin begs Betsy to come with him to check the house and they find John dead.

Godwin is devastated especially when he is arrested for the crime. The Monday Bunch swings into action to run the store while Betsy tries to hire a lawyer, learn the ins and outs of Bail bondsmen pricing, and investigates the crime and John's life and workplace in order to get her employee back. Add to that John's homophobic brother in town to close out the estate and you've got a large cast of characters.

There's the usual wonderful descriptions of needlework projects, multi-dimensional characters, lovely settings, action, adventure, and office intrigue. These are great mysteries with a wonderful set of continuing characters and we seem to have more with each book -- join in the fun now or go back to the beginning with Crewel World.

It centered too much on the gay employee and didn't put a very good image of him forward. After the first 50 pages I wasn't interested in finishing.

For those of us who are into needlecraft of some kind (it's knitting for me), Embroidered Truths is fun and entertaining, while at the same time a murder mystery.

The primary focus on crafts is embroidery, cross stitch (free tlatolli pattern included) and needlepoint in the shop Crewel World owned and operated by millionaire businesswoman, Betsy Devonshire. (Having not read other Ferris books and, therefore, not privy to earlier events in Betsy's life, my eyebrows shot up when I read she was worth three million buckaroos!) In this story, Betsy's shop manager and dear friend, Godwin DuLac, is thrown out of his lover's home and a few days later, John Nye, is found dead in his home. Actually, it's Goddy and Betsy who find him after receiving a call from Nye's law firm wondering why he hadn't shown up for work yet. It isn't long before Goddy is arrested and charged with the murder. Amateur sleuth Betsy is horrified that anyone would think Goddy capable of such a thing. Friends and shop customers take over the shop while Betsy sets out to find the real killer.

This book is very light fare; fun and easy to read. I was amused at the way Ferris expresses herself on occasion. Having had it pointed out to me by my editor that I sometimes go about a phrase the long way `round, I had to chuckle a few times at Ferris's style. Example: at the top of page 116 she writes (with regard to the hiring of an attorney for Goddy), "...overworked fellow still blowing on the ink on his law degree to dry it." I could hear my editor saying that to state that the same overworked fellow might still be "blowing the ink dry on his law degree" would have worked as well.

Friendship is important in Betsy's world and she certainly proves herself a loyal one, indeed.

I really enjoy the Betsy Devonshire mysteries, and this one is no exception, but it does fall a little short of the other books in the series. While we get to know a great deal more about Godwin and his relationship with John, there seems to be more description of setting than actual plot development. And to be perfectly honest, Ms Ferris almost gives it away about 2/3 of the way through. The character development was good, and there were a few surprises scattered throughout the book, but they seemed to distract from the story line.
A good read, but not one of my favorites by this author

Needlecraft mystery!.......2005-09-27

Betsy Devonshire, owner of Crewel World, is Excelsior, Minnesota's own amateur sleuth. When Betsy's friend and store manager, Godwin (Goddy) DuLac has a fight with his lover, attorney John Nye, the resulting break-up sends Godwin to temporarily reside with Betsy in her home above Crewel World.

When Betsy and Godwin discover the theft of his jewelry, and then John's very dead body in his home, grief sets in for Godwin. But then Godwin is arrested when the police learn that he would benefit from John's will. Betsy knows in her heart that her friend is innocent -- and it is up to her to prove it. The investigation leads Betsy and the others helping her, to a discovery about John's life that no one, including Godwin, knew about. And this leads to the why and who.

Monica Ferris writes delicious, cozy mysteries and Embroidered Truths is one of her best. I love her characters and found the plot interesting. As a needlecraft lover, I thoroughly enjoyed that aspect of the book.

Murder In Stitches.......2007-01-10

Once again Monica Ferris has given me my money's worth with a good puzzle, fun characters and a delightful cozy mystery. I've read and enjoyed all her books, and hope for many more.

A nice addition to a charming series, but not the best.......2006-07-13

Betsy is a 50 something woman who inherited a needlecraft shop from her sister, whose murder Betsy investigated in the first book of the series. Newly divorced, Betsy inherited a new life in a small town Minnesota along with the shop, and a collection of colorful characters who soon became friends. In this book, recurring character Godwin (Betsy's flamboyantly gay and invaluable assistant) is accused of murdering his long-term but recently estranged lover, and it's up to Betsy to find the real killer.

Reading this series is always a pleasure, and this book is no exception. However, I find one of the joys of reading books in a series to be the cast of ongoing characters, and with the exception of Godwin, they seemed very light in this book. Yes, they were there (unlike the last book in the series, which was set out of town) but they seemed nearly incidental.

Having said that, Betsy is a fun if uncomplicated protagonist, and Godwin an over-the-top and amusing friend in distress, and the book will charm fans of the genre.

Monica Ferris continues to please with Betsy's antics! I love all the characters and always relish a return trip to Excelsior, MN!

In this one, Betsy's faithful assistant, Godwin is accused of murdering his boyfriend (John) and she sets out to prove him innocent. This story helps to develop Godwin's character as lot as well as provide an interesting plot.

Having started out well with "Heralds of the Storm," Andrew Bates has continued this series with the same flair for action and story line that made the first volume a success. Again, he has managed to avoid the 'academicism' that plagues many White Wolf novels. Mixing two new character types, Hunters and Mummies, Bates introduces many new ideas, and renews hope for the World of Darkness story world.

The story opens with the arrival of Beckett in Chicago. He is a Gangrel who has run independently for centuries, seeking information on the origins of the vampires. Unlike the Nosferatu, who are bookish, Beckett does his research by wandering the world interviewing fellow vampires and investigating ancient artifacts. He has come to Chicago to talk to Inyanga, another Gangrel far older than himself. She offers a trade. She will part with her knowledge if Beckett will investigate the Hunters, humans who seek the death of all vampires. Beckett quickly finds this quest is far more complex than he expected, and in short order he finds himself enmeshed in clan politics, and confronted with mummies and the most ancient of vampires.

When Maxwell Carpenter, resurrected as a zombie to carry out his revenge against the Sforza clan, first planned and executed the attack against the Temple of Akhenaton, he expected to face with a professional espionage organization, not find that his next target, Nicholas Sforza-Anhotep, has somehow made the transition to a creature of uncanny powers. Maxwell managed to overpower Nicholas in that struggle, but now finds that having the mummy is considerably different from controlling him. Both of these creatures perpetually batter each other, and it is only their supernatural recovery abilities that keep them in the fray.

In the midst of this, Thea Ghandour and fellow members of the Van Helsing Brigade are healing their wounds. Events at the Temple were devastating to her team, leaving two dead and many of the others fugitives. The brigade is caught in the interplay between Vampire, Zombie, and Mummy, because the canopic jar Thea stole from the temple has become the target of nearly every supernatural creature in Chicago chances. While Thea has shown considerable skill at beating the odds the Hunters are facing grim prospects.

Truthfully, none of the protagonists is in for an easy time. The diverse factions are all interesting on their own, and it is hard to pick one or two people as favorites. And every time you think you have a handle on what's really going on something happens to lead you in a different direction. So far this series is the best that has come out of White Wolf in the past year. I am looking forward to Volume III and subsequent work from Andrew Bates.

Continues To Please.......2001-09-23

Like the first, the second book of White Wolf's latest trilogy is a great read with plenty of suspense, intrigue, action, monsters, and gore. Also like the first installment, it maintains a much quicker pace than many of White Wolf's other publications. Thus far, this trilogy has provided several illusive and incrediblly fasinating characters. If you like horror and the concept of people willingly facing off against all manners of evil then this book is for you.

I bought three books on canning and this book was the best. It is simple to understand, has pictures of the way things should look, such as the canning jars in a not water bath. I was canning tomatos and this book was so easy to follow. It listed the different methods for canning, as stating the best method.

I bought a pressure cooker and could not understand the manufactures directions, this book explained in simple terms, everything I needed to know, to use the pressure cooker. It has pictures on how to can tomatos from start to finish, which I really appreciated. To me a picture is worth a thousand words.

I think if you are a first time canner or even experienced, that this easy to use book is for you. I know I will be using it for years to come. Thank you to the authors.

I found this book in the library and used it for my first garden bounty -- my first canned peaches, my first jam, and my first frozen green beans. Keeping the Harvest is informative, fairly comprehensive and simple to follow. I'm buying it now so I'll be ready for next summer!

Dynamic Writing On Morrison........2003-03-30

Jim Morrison is one of the most written about performers of rock n' roll and "Mr. Mojo Risin'" stands as one of the wildest, most poetic biographies ever produced on the self-proclaimed Lizard King. David Dalton writes in a rich, feverish style that makes the book just as enjoyable to read as it is to look at. He describes in great detail Morrison's influences such as Jack Kerouac, William Blake and Nietzsche. What we end-up with is an intellecual dissection of Morrison's art, his rise to legendary heights with The Doors, one of the most influential of all rock bands, is described in mythic fashion, which is fitting considering men like Morrison are like Che Guevara, they are the mythic figures of our time in our culture. The is very fascinating when concerning the literary influences that contribute to the great lyrics of classics such as "Break On Through" and "The End." This is significant because it helps understand why the music of The Doors does not decrease in popularity, with a rich literary force in the music, it survives as does good literature. "The End" remains as vital as Conrad's "Heart Of Darkness." Jim Morrison comes off not just as a tragic poet, but also as an artist looking for answers in that which is almost spiritual, he was the first performer in rock who used the concert setting as a seance, as a religious event more than just a fun time. Consider his shamanistic movements on stage and the invoking power of the music in numbers such as "When The Music's Over." Of course, this is lost today in most of Morrison's influence on modern music when you look at bands like Marilyn Manson, Godsmack and Disturbed, even older bands with The Doors influence stamped on them such as Iggy Pop & The Stooges and Alice Cooper are more about the shock viscera than deep poetic journey. Dalton's writing is also intellectual in it's insight, as when he rightfully writes about the conservative landscape being also a breeding ground for monsters and also describes in interesting fashion the 60's and radical art changes that occurred during the era. The true delight of this book is the words, Dalton writes with great poetic prose, describing everything with visceral energy and rich phrasing which is enhanced by the great selections of photographs showing The Doors on stage and individual shots of Morrison dressed all in black leather, looking like a rebel with the heart of a poet. He almost seems prophetic. This is a poetic read and a great tribute to The Doors, their time, their music and their timelessness.

"mr. mojo rising" is the best book on jim morrison to date. if you admire morrison and understand who the man was, you will appreciate the non-academic, poetic nature of this book that paints a picture of jim as a creative but also very human and flawed individual who dug his own hole and yet was still a well intentioned, noble young man full of talent and passion as well as self destructiveness and rebelliousness. although at times i was a little annoyed at dalton's slightly excessive cynicism and criticism, as a whole it strikes the balance perfectly between admiration and construtive commentary, giving the intelligent fan an imaginative rush and a glance into the underground literary/pop rock vision that is all too rare in the literature available about jim and the underlying message of his art. ignore dalton's occasionally arrogant dismissal of morrison's attempt to transcend rock and actually change things, and you will find that no other study of morrison is as penetrating into his motives and the inspirations that formed his attitude to authority and oppositional philosophy of life. a passionate study of a somewhat misguided but nonetheless truly great figure, the like of which popular culture will probably never see again. a must.

No Flowery 60's types need apply.......2001-01-08

With a deft pen Mr. Dalton cuts through the man-made creation that many of us know as Jim Morrison to expose something more truthful. A tragic figure caught in the idealistic and pretentious 60's, trying to use music to transcend, yet ultimately defined and cliched, trapped in his own celebrity. Not always easy to stomach the book paints a picture of the rock scene and the 1960's far and away from the nostalgic musings we hear on the subject today, the picture the author paints is far more sinister. Yet through it all Morrison's music stands as a testament to his genius, and the often dark journey you take with the author serves the necessary task of shattering the creation that is Jim Morrison. When this was accomplished I felt I had an insight into Jim, a deep empathy and closeness that our pop culture seeks to conceal.

This is one fantastic look at Jim Morrison. It really does give you some insight into the man, myth and legend, without becoming to over-the-top. Not to mention the fact that I learned a lot about other poets that influenced him. Mindful, insightful. It really gives you the blood and guts of the man right in front of your eyes. Go Dave! I wonder what else your have in store for us with other rockers of days gone by.

A fresh approach.......1999-11-24

David Dalton relates the life and death of JM in a style I have found severely lacking in the multitude of other bios. Here the Lizard King is seen through the eyes of an obviously well versed writer. No hero-worship here, yet a fair factual account presented in an enchanting language. "Pieces of Osiris" indeed. Not recommended for recent Hooked on Phonics graduates. Highly recommended for any Doors/Morrison fans looking for something different or for anyone looking for a simply marvelous and rewarding read.
