Book Description
The elegant styling and exquisite detail of traditional fisherman's knits are brought to life in Alice Starmore's 20 original sweater designs for men, women, and children.
Customer Reviews:
Several wonderful Starmore classics........2007-05-04
Most of the sweater patterns in this classic book are for "ganseys" - not Aran sweaters, with the exception of two sweaters, although most of the ganseys offer cables, lace knitting etc. Two of the designs are Norwegian inspired using Fair Isle construction techniques, and one design has both colorwork and gansey design features. Thirteen out of the 20 designs are written for knitting in the round, up to the underarms. Finally, several of the patterns were written for a Rowan yarn that shrinks considerably after washing. There is only one pattern in the book for men, although, some might view some of the other designs as unisex. (Some are more delicate, made with a combination, wool/silk blend yarn.) You can probably see a photograph of many of the finished designs by doing a Google image search using the names of the designs: Stornoway, Eriskay, Lochinver, Fife, Cornwall, Norfolk, Scarborough, Filey, Inishmore, Inishmaan, Inisheer, Kinsale, Norway, Faroe, Baltic, Breton, Mystic, Nantucket, and Cape Cod. The Eriskay gansey for women, the Stornoway gansey for men and the Inishmore Aran are all Starmore classics. The Fife pattern for a young child is also very precious. This book is sure to become more expensive over time like the other Starmore books in the used book market. [...]
Stunning knitwear.......2006-07-10
If it's written by a Starmore, you can't go wrong. This book is full of absolutely gorgeous sweaters that will inspire even the novice knitter. I bought this book 10 years ago and it motivated me to learn to knit to a much more advanced level. It's a shame that Alice Starmore's books are out of print for the most part, as it deprives those new to knitting of some of the most beautiful books and patterns ever created (unless you can afford the ridiculous price for used).
Very comprehensive aran patterns.......2006-03-13
This book goes from fairly simple to very challenging. There is something for every level of confident knitter. I love that there are patterns for men, women and children. This book is excellent for those that have been wanting to try a pattern that looks complicated, but is rather very straightforward. I am anxious to try knitting a sweater in the round instead of knitting in pieces and having to sew them together. I highly recommend this book
Ten Star Book.......2006-02-01
If you love the look of cables, textures and Aran Sweaters, you will love Alice Starmore for putting together this book. This book is a treasure.
Fisherman's Sweaters:Twenty Exclusive Knitwear Designs for All Generations.......2005-10-14
Beautiful book! The patterns included are spectular. There is something for everyone. It is definitely not a book for beginners, but it is very inspiring. Well written, wonderful pictures and diagrams. A must buy for those who love "Fisherman"

A solid debut.......2005-09-02
Her brother Marco was lost and presumed dead. He'd been second mate on the Paradisio, a sailing ship that disappeared when Hurricane Carlos hit the Caribbean. Although she hadn't spoken to or seen him in five years, Ava had always hoped to bridge their estrangement someday. When a lawyer contacts her alleging the ship's owners were at fault for putting the lost crew at risk, Ava heads down to St. Barts to get answers from Marco's boss, Dane Erickson.
To Dane Erickson Utopia Adventures was more than a business, it was his family. However, even as he mourns the loss of the twenty-one crew members of the Paradisio, including his best friend Marco Santori, Dane knows many will look to blame him. Knowing of Marco's split from his family, Dane wonders if Ava Santori's presence on St. Barts is motivated by a need to know the truth or greed.
Wanting to discover the details of the new life her brother had created for himself, Ava accepts Dane's invitation to stay and explore Utopia's fleet. Distrust soon turns to romance, but it soon becomes evident that something illegal is going on. Will Dane and Ava uncover the truth before they become victims of foul play?
Roxanne St. Claire's debut is a steamy mixture of intrigue, passion and red herrings. Dane comes across as a hero too good to be true, but he certainly has the flair to carry it off. Ava is the more complex character as she suffers from a combination of grief, guilt and a need for vengeance over Marco. Set in the exotic locales of the Caribbean, TROPICAL GETAWAY is the perfect escape for a cold winter night.

Tropical Getaway.......2004-09-13
The second book I've purchased of Roxanne's. Sexy, steamy, full of surprises. If you purchase this one, I also suggest "Like a Hurricane" plus the rest of her books.
Tropical Getaway is a wonderful escape.......2004-01-20
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down once I started it. The story has twists and surprises and a sexy romance too. The characters are rich in texture and the description of the Caribbean made me feel I was there as I read. I can't wait for Roxanne St. Claire's next book to come out!!
Exciting.......2003-12-19
Enjoyed this new author's first book so much I bought two more to give as gifts.
Impressive new author.......2003-03-09
Roxanne has the ability to take me to the islands with her vivid description of surroundings and characters. Her characters are so real and thorough. I read this book to escape and she took me away.

Wonderful medicine.......2006-09-11
This is a wonderful book on women's medicine. Using the ayurvedic tradition - as presented by Maharishi Ayur-Veda, it combines solid medical research and ayurveda. It is inspiring. understandable, enlightening and a very easy read. It covers all aspects of a woman's health, physical, emotional and spiritual through all ages.
If you are undecided, read the last chapter (13 - Connection). It also contains two glossaries with explainations of Ayurvedic medicine and resourses. The book itself is footnoted. An extensive glossary covers all those confusing Indian ayurvedic terms and contains a detailed index and selected bibliography.
It would make a wonderful gift for any woman in your life and a great resource for men.
A Woman's Best Medicine.......2006-07-05
I love this book and as a health educator, have recommended it for years. If offers a wealth of practical ayurvedic knowledge to help women make intelligent health choices.
important information.......2005-07-28
A Woman's Best Medicine is one of the most uplifting and important books I have ever read.I read it some years ago and have just reviewed it which prompted me to buy several more copies to hand out on loan, to women I care about. It's easy to read, easy to follow and I wish all women had a copy! I have already begun to benefit healthwise, both in a physical sense and in an emotional one, from implementing some of the deeply wise but essentially simple advice. Bless the author.
A Compassionate Reference Guide to Ayurveda.......2001-01-24
Written with sincere effort to educate and spread Ayurvedic knowledge to other women, this is a book I come back to again and again. A thorough and easy-to-read guide for women on all levels of the mind, body and emotions. This book is written clearly and compassionately by women, and it surpasses all other Ayurvedic books in its accessibility to the reader. No "shoulds" or finger-pointing here. Just clear explanations and a joy to read. I use this book as an excellent reference, as well as a source of comfort and validation in my own personal experiences as a woman.
a treasure of medical information embracing the WHOLE person.......1999-09-25
this book is a wonderful treatise on health and wholeness - for BOTH sexes. unlike much of modern medicine, it addresses not only the health and well-being of the body but the essential link with the emotions and spirit, through a detailed and easy to understand explanation of the principles of the ancient (and very current) science of Ayurveda.
a MUST read for anyone interested in health and wholeness (ie., everyone)

A Wonderful Introduction to An Intimidating Cuisine.......2006-07-15
I love to cook, and have a number of cookbooks. Over the last four years, I have turned to "Terrific Pacific" 9 out of 10 times. Most Asian cookbooks are too frequently focused on one style, assume you know everything about the mysterious, or unfamiliar ingredients cited, and don't make you feel the recipes are accessible. "Terrific Pacific" is, in my opinion, a new classic. If you are interested in Pacific Rim cooking, this is a great place to start. You will develop a comfort level with fresh, interesting ingredients, and an appreciation for clean, lovely food from the other side of the planet. With a new vocabulary of ingredients, I have also had fun changing/developing recipes of my own. Kudos to Anya von Bremzen.
One of the Best.......2003-09-25
I've been through a lot of Asian Cookbooks but this is one that I keep comming back to for new and orginal reciepes.
Asian Fusion is the Theme, particularly Southest Asia. Thai, Indonesia, Phillipines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Fusion Recepies from Australia and New Zenland dot the pages as well as receipies that are had to classify other than really good. They blend ingredients and techniques for some awesome dishes.
The book is more or less organized by theme and ingredient, finger foods, poultry, deserts, salads, soups etc.
In addition to the organization of the book the receipies are organized in a reasonable fashion as well. To many cook books haphazardly organize the steps and ingredients so that you miss something or do it out of sequence (oh, I was supposed to boil this first).
This is not a book for beginners though. The reciepies here are generally moderate to very complex and are generally not the sort of thing you throw together at the last minute. Not to say they don't have some quick and easy ones but the theme is more towards those with gormet inclinations and farmiliarity with Asian cooking already.
One downside to the book is they assume you have access to an incredible variety of ethnic ingredients. In Austin we have Asian Markets and Central Market (an awesome store that specializes in gormet ingredients) but from time to time I find myself unable to locate something needed for some dishes. I've learned some substitutions. Also some of the reciepies can run up your food bill a bit. They are best left for those yearly special occasions.
Still its an EXCELLENT cookbook. Every time I get bored I go back to it and find something new and interesting. Its just loaded with great stuff. Buy it, you won't regret.
A great Pan-Asian book for home cooks.......2003-04-10
I'm a cookbook junkie, and I have dozens of books I just look at and never actually cook from. This isn't one of them. It's stained and dog-eared, from trying exotic but not terribly difficult recipes like Pot Roast with Asian flavors, stir-fried spinach and a terrific pineapple upside-down cafe with rummy, coconutty whipped cream. A great way to cook Asian without resorting to fattening, take-out-style recipes. The small sections about markets in Southeast Asia and such are also good...they make you want to try this food in person!
Fast and Fun.......2000-06-04
I've been making Thai Drumsticks for a Crowd for potlucks for the last two years. They're a real draw on a table full of tahini and tabouli! These recipes are easy and the authors descriptions are engaging. Not for people who are looking for serious ethnoculinary books, but easy to dazzle with.
best.......2000-06-01
I own about 200 cookbooks; this is the best.
Book Description
The latest book in our highly successful "Discovering Your Ancestors" series, this hands-on guide addresses virtually every aspect of tracing Germanic lineage. Written for beginners, Anderson and Thode cover the basics of genealogy, clearly explaining how to plan, organize and begin searching.
They also discuss the unique challenges associated with Germanic ancestral research and offer proven ways to overcome them - including how to locate and interpret vital and emigration records. In addition, this guide provides a history of Germanic countries and their changing boundaries to help researchers find their villages of origin and determine the events that led their ancestors to emigrate.
From naturalization to name changes, actual case studies of both typical and atypical Germanic genealogies demonstrate how to "solve" a research mystery, and comprehensive listings of Germanic archives, research forms, letter-writing examples and maps will save genealogists hours of additional work.
Customer Reviews:
Immediately helpful and practical.......2005-02-02
I've barely begun reading this book and already have found so much practical information to use right now, without even leaving the house. The word lists are great and the info on the problems to be aware of are what I've been able to use right off the bat. The tips will come in handy at the library and research center. The contact and form letters will be useful when I have enough info to take that step. A definite "must have" for researchers with German ancestors.
Book Description
Greene & Greene furniture, widely recognized as the finest expression of the American Arts & Crafts movement, is presented here for the first time as working shop drawings. Featuring accurate front, side, and top views, complete cutting lists, and comprehensive section and detail views, these drawings offer today’s woodworkers a unique opportunity to reproduce the rare furniture line, which has often been photographed but not presented in such detail. Including introductory chapters on both the Greenes and the Halls, an extensive discussion covers suitable woods and finishes and provides solid technical information on how to make such characteristic Greene & Greene details as proud ebony plugs and splines, breadboard ends, and cloud lifts.
Customer Reviews:
This is an exceptional book for woodworkers!.......2004-11-30
As a woodworker, I can say that Thomas Moser is a living legend in the world of furniture design. His thriving company is a testament to that. As a librarian, I am here to say that this book is invaluable to anyone interested in building Moser's furniture designs for themselves.
Thomas Moser's furniture, influenced heavily by the Shakers and Moser's own desire to create lasting quality, has become nearly a style unto itself. This book is his attempt to give amateur woodworkers the ability to copy his designs for their own homes.
What I really like about this book is that is spends zero time covering the basics of furniture building. To a beginner, this book might seem too sparse to be useful, but to anyone who has successfully built a piece of fine furniture, this book stands as a guide to producing many classics. With over 70 projects included, all with measured drawings and excellent attention to detail, this is a treasure trove for those who appreciate Moser's artistry. Though this book is not new (the designs in the book are mainly from the 70's and 80's), every one of these projects is still "in style" due to the classic Shaker influences in his designs.
I highly recommend this book to all furniture makers who want to copy a Moser piece and to any library wanting to collect in this area!
Measured Shop Drawings for American Furniture.......2000-06-24
Modern furniture makers will enjoy the detailed measured drawings and the 320 pages of content. I would classify the designs as not shaker but Danish Modern with a twist to Contemporary design. As traditional cabinetmaker's we find the designs too refined toward Modern and the furniture looses the feeling of richness and spontaneity associated with American Colonial Furniture. In all, a bunch of good lessons in furniture design!
A great book with specific notes on furniture construction.......1998-01-04
This is a very good book. It is specific enough to describe why you should build the furniture as drawn, and what details you need to pay attention. The book does not discuss in detail the wood choices, but it has straighforward blueprints for many kinds of furniture. This is my favorite book and I recommend it highly to fans of Shaker style furniture and woodworking hobbiests.
Book Description
“Moser has produced a wealth of beautiful furniture in a style that combines the best traits of Shaker and other traditional American styles. This title offers measured drawings for a number of Moser’s works, with close-ups of particularly complex areas. Included are plans for beds, cabinets, chairs, clocks, and many other furnishings. A solid purchase for libraries.”—Library Journal.

RCCrouse.......2004-10-27
The text is clearly presented. I enjoyed the drawings but found I needed additional drawings that required careful calculations.
Best on the subject, but not a plan book.......2002-08-01
Moser's book has detailed drawings for many of the beautifully simple furniture products his company sells. The elegant proportions and simple lines are in a semi-Shaker style. Details are shown blown up with the project for minor details, or in an appendix for features (drawers, web frames) common to several projects.
Many color photographs of the finished pieces are given as well, but they are not working photos, they're more like sales photos to show what the finished piece is like.
This book is much more useful than some of the compilations of hundred-year-old plans that are available. Some of those are little more than measured drawings of the finished item. Recommended companion volumes are Taunton Press's "In the Shaker Style" for plans and Moser's "How to build Shaker furniture" for tips and techniques.
The drawings are accessible to an average-skilled woodworker but they are not plans as such, no cut-lists or instructions. I also have found additional construction details in the gorgeous sales brochures his company mails and on the Moser furniture web site.

Book Description
"For Your Precious Love" -- "Only the Strong Survive"--those familiar classics are Jerry Butler at his most soulful. But there's much more to this music pioneer's story.
Here is a portrait of a remarkable performer, as well as an up-close and personal look at the world of rhythm and blues. Filled with intimate anecdotes about such R&B legends as Otis Redding and Sam Cook, Butler's compelling, sometimes hilarious, narrative is told against the backdrop of 1960s America. Only the Strong Survive chronicles the "Iceman's" journey from rural Mississipi to Chicago, and the founding and eventual breakup of the legendary Impressions vocal group.
Soul pioneer Jerry Butler's story doesn't end there: currently serving his fourth term on the Cook County Board of Commissioners, Butler also gives us a glimpse inside the world of Chicago politics--including stories of Harold Washington and Louis Farrakhan.
Only the Strong Survive is entertaining, moving, riveting--like Jerry Butler himself.
Customer Reviews:
More than a book about rhythm and blues music.......2001-01-10
A friend of mine gave me "Only the Strong Survive" as a Christmas gift, and now I treasure it as one of the best gifts I've ever received.
This is more than a book about music--although eighty percent of it is. It is a history book, political book, inspirational book -- you name it! One would never think that a rhythm and blues singer had that much depth. For example, Mr. Butler uses the tragic case of his former bongo player to show the horrors of the war in Vietnam. Then, turning to politics, he reminds us of the debt we owe the late Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, and what all of us can do to make this world a better place. It is at once inspirational and entertaining, thought-provoking and profound -- a must-read for all serious readers!
THIS BOOK WILL BE A COLLECTOR'S ITEM.......2000-11-12
A MUST READ ESPECIALLY FOR DUSTY RECORD FANS. MR. BUTLER IS CLASSY AND ONE OF THE BEST PERFORMERS BACK FROM THE 60'S, A TRUE PROFESSIONAL. I STARTED READING THE BOOK AND COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. TRUST ME THIS BOOK WILL NOT BORE YOU, WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT IS JERRY AND EARL ADD A TOUCH OF HUMOR TO JUST ABOUT EVERY CHAPTER. THIS BOOK IS A KEEPSAKE. JERRY ALSO HAS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VOICES I HAVE EVER HEARD, DID YOU KNOW THAT HE WAS THE LEAD SINGER OF THE IMPRESSIONS AT ONE TIME AND HE LED ON THE SONG "FOR YOUR PRECIOUS LOVE" I AM A LIBRARIAN, AND I CONSTANTLY REVIEW AND PREVIEW BOOKS AND THIS IS A WINNER. AS JERRY SINGS IN ONE OF HIS SONGS "I'M A TELLING YOU".
The Real Survivor.......2000-11-01
Jerry Butler's book tells an important--and fun--story about his history as the one great rnb singers. Did you know he co-wrote I've Been Loving You Too Long, with Otis Redding.
