Book Description
From two senior Sports Illustrated writers comes an explosive, fast-paced satire that will do for today's NBA what North Dallas Forty did for the NFL a generation ago.
Just months from his Yale graduation, street-smart whiz kid Jamal Kelly leaves school to take a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the front office of the Los Angeles Lasers. Once on the West Coast, Jamal gets a quick introduction to a subculture awash in big egos and fast cars, as well as an introduction to the charms of the team's new hard-charging beat writer, Jilly Forrester.
In the spirit of Primary Colors and The Devil Wears Prada, Foul Lines peels back the curtain on the trappings of big-time professional basketball. No other sport encapsulates so many cultural hot-button topics, and Foul Lines at once exposes and lampoons this parallel universe.

Geographically challenged and unfunny.......2007-07-30
Onw wonders how accurate the rest of the book is when a character apologizes for being late to a meeting because she took Wilshire Blvd. all the way from Studio City. Uh, Wilshire Blvd. is nowhere near Studio City. It does go Downtown, though, east from the beach, where it passes right by UCLA where Bill Walton used to play. One would think that Bill would have spotted this geographical faux pas before he gave the book such a glowing accolade. Leads me to wonder whether he actually read it, or was doing a favor for a couple of pals? The Amos and Andy dialogue, along with the hilarious making up of names such as Litanium, is, come on, frankly racist. Don't be suckered in by the 'insider' pitch. This alleged roman a clef reveals nothing even the casual fan doesn't know. The rambling plot, cliched characters, and flat writing doesn't help either. Question: How many writers does it take to write a novel anyway? Answer: not these two.
Great game plan; okay execution.......2006-12-13
Entertaining trip with an NBA team. Predictable with no twists or turns, but the authors kept it moving. A real fun read. If this is "dead-on" as Bill Walton says in the cover blurb, then the NBA life is just as good and bad (and as R-rated) as you imagine it to be. A couple minor irritations:
- As another reviewer says, the authors use unnecessarily obscure words. Sample: "... Kwaanzii would be ushered to center court, in mufti, and panegyrized by Padgett..." This is in the same paragraph where they use the word "redolent".
- The lingo and feel of the religious player is so thoroughly wrong that it makes you wonder what else is phony. Fortunately, this player's lines are few.
All in all, I enjoyed the book. I wish there were more like it.
Keep a dictionary handy.......2006-06-29
Okay so this review is a bit premature being that I've read up to the 16th page so far but I am highly irritated by all the complex words the author is using---especially for a story of BASKETBALL. The wording is making it difficult for the story to flow.
This is why I no longer go to NBA games!.......2006-06-27
The description of the thinly disguised NBF is lamentably (for an old basketball fan) on the money. Clearly written with an insider's knowledge and, apparently, no fear of David Stern. Read it and weep!
Great Satire of the NBA.......2006-03-10
This was a really quick read that was funny cover to cover. It got the NBA satire down to a T. The bratty billionaire owners, the arrogant young players, the way Stern spins everything positive even though half the players are criminals. Some great specific jokes about A.C. Green, Doug Christie, and Stu Scott (names changed of course). It's also well-written and has compelling characters that make it a joy to read. I highly recommend this book to any NBA/sports fan, and even to readers with little interest in sports.

As Judge Dee copes with the administration of the plague-ridden Imperial Capital, he must also bring his skills to bear on the mystery of two seemingly unconnected murders that could mean the extinction of the city's oldest, most aristocratic families.

"A tense and exotic mystery."—Publishers Weekly
Robert van Gulik (1910-67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. He drew his plots from the whole body of Chinese literature, especially from popular detective novels that appeared in the seventeenth century.

Judge Dee & Old Chinese Justice.......2004-09-20
Published in 1965, the historical mystery, The Willow Pattern, A Judge Dee Mystery by Robert van Gulik, portrays 7th century AD China and Judge Dee, the Lord Chief Justice in China's Imperial Capital. The author, a Dutch scholar writes in the manner of a traditional 18th century Chinese writer of 7th century Chinese mystery stories. Although historically Judge Dee was a magistrate in the Tang Dynasty, the stories are set in the Ming Dynasty. The antecedents of this popular mystery series is only the first complications the reader meet. Judge Dee (probably based on a real character) is an intelligent and canny Confucian Magistrate who always delivers impartial and fair justice to all. Populist hero Judge Dee and his justice are not always in line with the Imperial Rule justice. But Judge Dee's justice always solved the crimes and sends the evildoers to their doom.
But, justice did depend on Judge Dee and how he alone decided to investigate, interpret the facts, interpret the law, pass judgment and decide the sentence (if any) based on his judgment and knowledge of the case. There was no appeal after Judge Dee declared the verdict. Fair, impartial justice under the old Confucian system in China was solely dependent on the judgment of the magistrate. The mystery story, The Willow Pattern illustrates how arbitrary Chinese justice can be under the old Confucian system. Ordinary citizens of China were regulated differently from the nobility. Women were, of course even lower in status than ordinary citizens. The ability to defend their life with deadly force, a natural law that we take for granted in America, is illustrated in The Willow Pattern, "Women of the underworld sometimes carry an iron ball of about the size of a large egg in the tip of each sleeve. Since the law forbids ordinary citizens to carry daggers or other cutting weapons on their person, on the penalty of a flogging, those women have developed a special art of fighting with loaded sleeves." The "loaded sleeves" were considered deadly weapons. The people accepted their place in life since it was the will of heaven that the rulers had a mandate to rule. When they had a bad master they understood that they were expected to accommodate the situation as their fate. Speaking of a bad man (Yee) who was their master, Cassia explains, "He was a bad man, but he was our master. Heaven willed it so." Justice was also the will of heaven so when it was not arbitrary that was a blessing but not to be counted on.
The story here occurs during a time of plague and Judge Dee rules alone in the Imperial City and wears many different hats. He must administer and safeguard the city's food stores, manage the military (normally separate from civilian control) and deal with the disposal of the plague victims. Judge Dee also investigates charges of wrongdoing, conducts inquests concerning suspicious deaths and arbitrates civil affairs. He also prosecutes, defends, adjudicate and oversee sentencing of criminal cases. Judge Dee is also concerned with finding the causes of the plague, the plague sanitation problems and trying to ameliorate the conditions in the Imperial City. Justice in China during a state of martial law is also harsh with no mercy under Judge Dee. Under Judge Dee's rule when the hungry, poor men and women attempt to raid the granary for food, they are slaughtered by the military. Military iron-shafted arrows launched by the soldiers' crossbows are no match for the unarmed civilians. Judge Dee rationalizes that 30 dead men and women saved thousands of people from starving. Judge Dee does not investigate if there was a better way to deal with the hungry crowd. Floggings and beheadings are also considered rational steps for controlling the unruly crowds.
The fact that justice for all was not an ideal realized in old China escaped Judge Dee's discernment. The safeguards built into the Chinese justice system (ring a gong if something's wrong) do not always lend themselves to practical living. The pressures of Chinese life in old china for the poor to conform to the governments mandate to fulfill the will of heaven take their toll. His Confucian training and way of life does not leave room for the possibility of justice not being blind in a society mandated by heaven. "High up here in your palace, my lord, you know very little indeed about the kind of justice meted out by the minions of the law to us, the poor." In the end Judge Dee does mete out fair, impartial and creative justice and just desserts for the evil doers. But, even with Judge Dee heroics, justice in old China is not always assured or just for everyone.
A fun read on any level that you care to take it!

Book Description
Dawna Markova is revolutionizing the way parents approach their children’s education. A leading educator and psychologist, she has noticed that parents tend to focus on correcting their children’s weaknesses. But in this groundbreaking book based on the world-renowned SMARTWired program, Dr. Markova demonstrates a more effective strategy that centers on building a child’s strengths. This approach not only helps children discover their passion and purpose in life, but it also instills in them a strong sense of self-worth–which in turn makes them highly motivated to learn.
A longtime teacher, Dr. Markova understands that by recognizing and developing children’s unique assets, parents can help them succeed not just in school but in life. She cites compelling anecdotes across all age groups and reveals practical strategies: the essential principles of the SMARTWired approach to learning, the three kinds of attention the human brain uses, and the five categories of children’s assets. Along the way, you will discover how to
• identify and support your child’s hidden talents
• help your child make sound decisions with confidence
• communicate on the same wavelength with your child for better mutual understanding
• nurture your child’s assets in partnerships with schools, mentors, coaches, and other resources
• free your child from societal expectations
An impassioned call to arms backed by a point-by-point plan, The SMART Parenting Revolution provides the road map for all parents looking to develop their children’s full potential.

Finally a great book with a purpose .......2006-03-25
"Smart parenting revolution is about listening and guiding your child. Learning as a parent/educator that there is a diversity of ways of thinking and processing information. It helped me find practical ways to support my children and to boost their confidence in building on their successes."
Finally, focusing on the asset not the deficit.......2006-03-23
This book has been a godsend to my work with children and youth. Most importantly, the focus on assets versus deficits makes so much sense I can't believe it's not everywhere in the media. Its a very simple concept but its not easy to do and it is a breakthrough idea. We are so programmed to notice all the things that are wrong in our lives, our kids and our society. It seems like this simple 180 could create dramatic change in our world. The tools in this book will help everyone to communicate better with their kids, their and their family and their coworkers. I highly recommend it!
sigh.......2006-02-19
Not all practices work for all people.
"Drugging" my ADD child keeps him from failing every class he takes. My son has amazing strengths, an IQ that got him Mensa membership at 14 - BUT - due to ADD, OCD, and arthritis he needs prescribed medications to have the necessary focus to 1-not lose completed major assignments, 2- remember to bring a book home before the school is locked for the night, 3- look in his English folder for his English report, instead of wondering where he put it thus getting a zero... or, to be able to utilize his strengths and reach his full potential.
For my non ADD/OCD/arthritis children - this is a great book!!!
Where's my review?.......2006-02-17
I had a lengthy review of this book that I posted a few months ago here for this book. Within the past few days it disappeared.
The review did say some negative things but also contained positive remarks, too. It certainly contained nothing profane or libelous. And 19 out of 39 people found the review helpful. Now it's gone, and I did not remove it
I only gave the book 2 stars though, which had made the overall collective review a star less than the full stars. Now the review has mysteriously disappeared & the overall review is now up to a full 5 stars again. Who is responsible for this?
Approach for Educators, Parents and Managers.......2006-01-30
Wouldn't it be a better world if each of us could reach our full potential? Dr. Markova provides a logical and amazing approach that will allow children to thrive. Her approach early on in her teaching career proved to be an exciting journey for the children in her classroom as well as parents and herself. She demonstrates how focusing on a child's strengths and interests can unlock the gifts children (and adults) have. Understanding these strengths and interests can be used to assist a child to improve in other areas.
I particularly like the fact that she lays the foundation and philosophy in the first part of her book, and follows up with the practical approach that allows easy implementation.
Dr. Markova is on target that we've become a society that clearly sees what we did wrong. She guides us now to see what we've done right and how this approach can transcend our children and ourselves. More, please, Dr. Markova!

Beautiful and delicious!!.......2001-10-13
Having tried recipes by Alastair Hendy from the Style magazine, I was thrilled to see that he had done a cookbook.
Not only is it beautifully presented, the recipes are simple, easy to follow and taste delicious. They reflect Alastair Hendy's spirit of adventure, in that he has included recipes from his travels abroad in the Middle East, India, Thailand and
other places in the east.
Alastair Hendy may be a self-taught cook but he certainly knows how to combine ingredients to give food a wonderful flavour.
I hope that this is going to be the first book in a long line of cookbooks by Alastair Hendy and if he were to write another, I would the first in line.

Barbie Doll Identification.......2006-03-20
Good resource. Would have been much better if each doll was listed by name under the category in table of contents. ie; Bob Mackie: Queen of Hearts, etc. and the page number where it can be found. Some Bob Mackies are in the porcelain section as well as designer section and would be missed if you don't know your dolls, which is why you buy the book in the first place.
Very good information book........2005-09-15
I found this book easy to use because it was well organized. I also found the prices to be on target. The pictures are great and they cover most of the collectors dolls. They also give you all the right basic information you would want to know about a doll.
The Best Guide to Barbie Doll Collectors.......2005-08-04
I have been a fan of J.Michael Augustiniak since I read his first "Encyclopedia".As a Barbie Collector who lives in a foreign country and doesn't have the same access to the informa
tions that are necessary to buy a doll, this book gives you a full view of all the types that have been made, their market values, focusing into the designers' work, the changes a Barbie
doll has been passing through and the most amuzing part:The one
of a kind dolls, which we woudn't be able to know if it wasn't for this book. Excellent for rechearch and a very accurate source for a good purchase.
A must-have!
Definitive volume for collectors.......2005-02-26
Okay, you might ask what a guy like me is doing reviewing a book on Barbie Dolls. Well, for one thing, I happened to pass down the collectible aisle in the local bookstore, which had books on collecting coins, stamps, signatures, cars, antiques, art glass, dinner plates, you name it, and on the end, was the book on Barbie Dolls, with information on prices and rarity. So I picked it up and took a look. I was surprised to see some of these dolls go for nearly $1000, but most of the dolls in this book go for $10 to $50.
Also, the Barbie Doll is probably one of the most important pop culture icons of the last 40 years. Hundreds of millions of Barbie Dolls have been sold in just about every country.
The book also had some interesting historical info. The first doll came out in 1959, and from there until 1966, there was only one head mold used, altered slightly for the Fashion Queen and Miss Barbie Dolls. From 1967 through 1976, there were four different head molds used (the original 1959 was used for Montgomery Ward, Twist n' Turn Barbie, Stacey, and Steffie Dolls).
Since 1977, however, many other molds have been used, offering more variety and ethnic diversity, including the 1981 Oriental Barbie, the 1983 Spanish Barbie, the 1991 Shani Barbie, the 1992 Mackie Neptune Fantasy Barbie (which looks like it might have been Aquaman's girlfriend or significant other, from the comic strips), and the 1999 Fantasy Goddess of Africa Barbie.
The book also contains info on prices and rarity, and other general information on each model, including clothing, accessories, face make-up, Ken dolls, and other Barbie paraphernalia.
Definitely Worth The Wait-.......2004-11-29
I absolutely recommend this book! Very Detailed-from the beautiful Silkstones to the innovative Dolls Of The World-Princess Collection(I have almost EVERY one!)-stunning photos, close-ups and all-if you collect Barbie, you MUST have this book(and the other with the special store editions)-

Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives: Identification & Values 1972-2004 .......2007-01-16
The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives is a great reference to the value of different types of Barbies. I was a little dissapointed that the Holiday Barbies and Bob Mackie Barbies are not listed in the book but I was pleased, otherwise. I would recommend this book.
Collector's Encyp. of Barbie Doll Exclusivies/1972-2004.......2006-07-20
Having read the other collector's encyclopedia's written by this author, this one is also a beautiful collection of the Barbie doll's one may want to know about and/or collect. The pictures are well done and the descriptions very clear and understandable. At a book store, before even my first purchase of these books, I skimmed other books stating they had what I was looking for, but none compared to Michael J. Augustyniak's. Through his books, I have been able to purchase Barbies at what I know is a fair and good price for my own collection. Very good resource book. Highly recommended.

"Exactly what I was looking for!".......2003-10-07
I have looked at many many books trying to find one that would help me to easily identify Barbie. Well folks, this is it! The pictures are wonderful, brightly colored and large enough to see detail. This is a "Must Have" book if you are a collector. (or if you buy used dolls to make up an OOAK) Well worth the money spent. I highly recommend!
Wonderful Encyclopedia for Barbie collectors!.......2001-10-24
This book is the most wonderful Encyclopedia about Barbie dolls. It has so many dolls listed with descriptions, prices and pics of the dolls in their boxes. Many pink boxes, OOAK Mattel dolls and collectibles. Pictures are nice, they are from the doll in box, and there are closes on some dolls.
If you need information on Pink Boxes, this book is the best!!! There are a new version 'cos this is not updated, the dolls showed ends on 1999. There are no 2000 dolls or 2001. But there are a second edition, so search for the new edition!
Good Book.......2001-03-30
This book was very informative regarding dolls and values. I wish it would have had more of the "Special Edition" models and values though. Lots of pictures that are a good size for viewing and easy to see.
This book is put together very well, the index pages in the back make it easy to locate the dolls that you are looking for. I am a beginner and this book was very helpful for me to put a value on the dolls that I already have.
And I Thought I Knew Barbie!.......2000-04-06
I just received the COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA of BARBIE by JMichael Augustyniak. I thought I knew a lot about the value of eachdoll, I sell them and buy them regularly right here on amazon.com auctions. However, I opened the pages of this book and it is fantastic and a must for any serious collector. All the photos are in color, by date, series, it is all in this book. You will be amazed that some Barbies are valued in high 5 figures! I'm so glad I have this reference. Everyone who is interested in Barbie should! END

Collector's Encyclopedia of Barbie Dolls & Collectibles.......2000-04-03
This is a must for anyone who collects vintage Barbies and related items. It contains information and prices from the first Barbie starting with 1957 to 1976. It has all marks from those times. Also, pictures with information each year, which dolls were released and what clothes they were wearing. They have a year by year section, with information on other Mattel dolls, Ken, Midge and other rare ones. This is the most informative Barbie book I've read.

An excellent review of housing types.......1999-01-17
This is certainly a book that many who deal with housing design have felt lacking from their libraries. Being an excellent review of housing types of the last century, mainlyafter modernism,it is an excellent reference book for those in need of an historical overview of housing. The categories into which the examples are divided into is logical, which helps in comparing different types of housing. It is also a pleasure to read it as the book is designed in very elegant and clear lines. Unfortunately it costs too much for me but for those who can afford it, it will be a great pleasure to own.
