Book Description
The rich atmosphere of South Carolina, Hilton Head and Charleston, is brought vividly to life by Dorothea Benton Frank, a South Carolina native who, with her exquisitely evocative prose, makes you smell the sea air, see the palmettos, and savor the sweet tea, but this time it comes with a side of antipasti.
Hilton Head, a South Carolina retirement heaven—at least it's supposed to be, but for Big Al and Connie Russo, the move from New Jersey to this southern paradise has been fraught with just a few complications. Especially for their daughter, Grace.
Well, that's what she likes to be called. Her family insists on Maria Graziella. Seriously, enough with the Neapolitan. That might have been okay in New Jersey, but now it's just plain silly, and Grace at thirty-two is, horror of horrors, still unmarried. No wonder her family drives her crazy. Well, that and the fact that she's living with the man she would marry if they both weren't so commitment phobic. Michael is a doctor and a scientist and Grace is pretty sure he's also an atheist. Over the years, Grace has become a bit ambivalent about her faith, but her family is as old-fashioned Italian as they come. So the stage is set for a major showdown that just might change Grace's outlook on life, family, and the New South.

A wonderful story for the beach.......2007-08-29
Sullivans Island was one of my favorite books by Ms. Frank and even though I didn't think this book was as good, it was still a wonderful story. In her typical style this was a fast read, with humor (I had to laugh at the wedding scene) well developed characters and a story that contains romance and a bit of drama.
Dreadful..........2007-08-07
I have enjoyed other books by Dorothea Benton Frank, but I thought this was dreadful. Characters weren't plausible, nor was the story line. This one is going into the trash - not even worth passing on to friends.
Good but Not the usual DBF book.......2007-08-05
I found this book a mass of contradictions that were difficult to reconcile. Perhaps I can't relate to how a close Italian family may control your emotions and behavior, but I didn't understand how a seemingly independent and strong woman would allow her family to exclude her significant other from family events and holidays.
Dorothea Benton Frank excels at depicting close, loving relationships - whether it's one of family, love or friendship and she does that well in this case. What seems ajar is the loving family's refusal to acknowledge her boyfriend and her acceptance of this, albeit resentful.
Perhaps the biggest problem I have with the book is that the central character, Grace, just doesn't seem to be more conflicted with choices she has to make between Michael and her family and Michael and her need to travel for her job at times when he needed her most. If the relationship was truly as idyllic as indicated, you would have thought she would have insisted her family accept him - and that when he was most needing her time and attention, she choose him over them.
The story did get more interesting and traveled in some unexpected directions to come to an ending that rewarded you for making it to the conclusion.
This one just didn't measure up to the standards of the other Dorothea Benton Frank books I've read, which doesn't mean it's not a good book.
Unbelievably plotless.......2007-07-17
I'm sorry but I honestly can't believe anyone found this book the least bit interesting which is sad because I have enjoyed this author's other books. Perhaps moving out of her southern genre was moving out of her element. If one has ever gone through cancer treatment with a spouse, family member, or significant other it would be beyond belief that one could leave them alone on a holiday to be with an unsympathetic, uncaring family, especially when the one suffering from cancer also has a dying parent.
This book is plotless, the conversations and relationships within the main character's family are unrealistic and inane. I was so bored by the last 2 chapters I was kicking myself for having hung in that far into the book and I had to skip ahead to figure out how it ended to be able to finish it at all. If I could rate it lower than a one, I would rate it a huge goose egg.
Not your typical DBF novel....but I liked it!.......2007-07-10
This book was different from the other books written by Dorthea. The fact that the main character was from New Jersey, was Italian and Catholic was far from the normal Southern themes that run rampant in the Dorthea B Frank collection. I liked it though. I'm not Italian but I am Catholic and I enjoyed reading about the references to the Catholic religion through out this book. I did recognize the DBF humor though. I got a big kick out of the fact that Grace couldn't remember Marianne's mother's name. Classic Frank humor. I think Dorthea likes wine and loves to eat and either has traveled a lot or wishes she has. All of her books are filled with food, wine and far away places. This one in particular. The ending was very hopeful. I commend Dorthea for giving us all a little more hope and a little more faith. This is probably one of my favorites of the Frank collection. I have read them all.

Book Description
On the heels of the stunning success of the Summer '04 award-winning bestseller Brooklyn Noir, this second volume digs deeper into the criminal history of New York's punchiest and most alluring borough. Brooklyn Noir 2 offers short stories by the classic authors who blazed the path for the success of the first volume, which award-winning mystery author Laura Lippman called, "a stunningly perfect combination . . . the writing is flat-out superb, filled with lines that will sing in your head for a long time to come." Brooklyn Noir was featured in every media outlet in New York City (including two New York Times features and an appearance on the Leonard Lopate NPR radio show), as well as publications and media all across the country (and the UK, Australia, Italy, etc.).
Once again in Brooklyn Noir 2, each story is set in a distinct Brooklyn neighborhood and mixes masters of genre with some of the best literary fiction writers to ever set foot in the borough. These brilliant and chilling stories see crime striking in communities of Russians, Jamaicans, Puerto Ricans, Italians, Irish, and many other ethnicities--in the most diverse urban location on the planet.
Contributors:H.P. Lovecraft, Lawrence Block, Donald Westlake, Pete Hamill, Jonathan Lethem, Colson Whitehead, Carolyn Wheat, Thomas Wolfe, Hubert Selby, Jr., Stanley Ellin, Gilbert Sorrentino, Maggie Estep, Salvatore La Puma, and Irwin Shaw.

Brooklyn Noir 2: the Classics.......2006-11-10
Interesting concept...a follow-up to the excellent Brooklyn Noir 1 with a collection of "classic" short stories ranging in tone from H.P. Lovecraft's stately "Horror at Red Hook" to Hubert Selby's torrid "Talala"
(an excerpt from "Last Exit to Brooklyn"). Something here to please everyone, but not everything to everyone's taste. Not quite as entertaining as the original BN1 but the stories are well chosen and varied in style, a worthy addition to the Noir collections.
Dear, dirty Brooklyn.......2006-07-09
Superior to Manhattan Noir and Bklyn Noir 1. Ranges from the elegant (and enraged) H. P. Lovecraft (originally from Rhode Island, so what can you expect?) to Selby's dreamy, slick brutalities (a prose style halfway between Henry Miller's and William Burroughs's). Brooklyn (being Brooklyn) allows for the fine-tuning of realism in the canon of American prose styles. Wolfe's attempt to reproduce Brooklyn speech fails pitifully (just as do Hollywood's attempts to suggest Southern speech), but Selby's waterfront Brooklyn of WW 2 succeeds (see the German film production of LAST EXIT: is that Jennifer Jason Leigh as the perky, scrofulous siren of the Bklyn waterfront?). Unfortunately, Flatbush is totally absent (as it is in Bklyn Noir 1). During WW 1, Flatbush was the epitome of middle-class American aspirations ("When it's nesting time in Flatbush..."). Miller's Death of a Salesman comes out of Flatbush, as do portions of Malamud and Edmund Wilson ("Princess with the Golden Hair"). And don't forget Woody Allen. Somehow, both vols of Bklyn Noir omit this fertile enclave. Essential reading for students of American literature.

What Gurahl Is.......2002-08-19
Gurahl is an expansion to Werewolf the apocalypse. This book contains everything you need to play a werebear character (black, brown, polar, and grizzly only) including history, culture, merits, flaws, abilities, gifts, and fetishes unique to the gurahl. This book contains much more information than the player's guide did on the werebears. It even inludes how to bring a werebear into your werewolf game. The only dissapointment is that this book does not have a greater variety of bears such as the sun bear, or kodiak bear. The gurahl are the Healers of gaia, and are much less violent than the werewolves (but MUCH more strong)!
Gaia's Healers.......2001-11-05
This is a great sourcebook for players and storytellers alike. It gives a deep insight into another breed of Gaia's changing children, more specifically, the werebears. While players may find the concept of playing a huge bear-changer intriguing, storytellers might want to include the powerful Gurahl in their chronicle to add extra depth or perspective. On top of that, the white-wolf crew have put together another piece of brilliance, which pretty much characterises the whole white-wolf publishing and game company.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-08-01
Since I am pretty much a newbie to Qigong I bought a couple of DVDs and this book on the subject to learn more about it. I am pretty satisfied with the instruction in this book. The routine is well explained and the instructions about Qigong massage and insights on specific problems are excellent and very helpful.
Started me in Chi Gong.......2007-05-31
I have a bunch of other books about this form of exercise but this book is the first one that got me started. All of the other's are a better book but they want to give you the complete history of their form, or of Tai Chi, instruct you in breathing and standing and you are damn lucky if you find a posture before the mid point of the book.
Not this book--you dive right in and she tells you later about the postures--I like that.
Simply Wonderful.......2006-10-21
Qigong (Chi Kung) is a Chinese art and science that means working with and cultivating the vitality of life. This book is an outstanding method to learn this ancient and modern tradition for staying young, healthy, and in harmony with all and everything.
This book's many exercises are simple and easy to understand--no unneeded verbal baggage here. Everything is clear and to the point.
Yet paradoxically the book is encyclopedic in its coverage of what was previously hidden and secret. Shoshanna has studied for many years with masters and has made a vast wealth of practical knowledge available to the student.
There is a DVD--same author and same title--that shows Shoshanna doing the movements, again it is magnificent.
A Must Have.......2004-12-06
"Qigong for Staying Young" has a permanent place on my night table. Shoshanna teaches us how to achieve wellness through the mindful practice of this unique form of gentle exercise. Beautifully written, this book artfully interweaves ancient Chinese medical philosophy into a modern model for understanding what health actually is. Shoshanna's own voice of wisdom and experience guides us through the chapters, providing the inspiration to achieve and maintain balance and wholeness in our lives.
Over time I have studied each chapter in depth as I learned each of the exercise sets individually. Shoshanna's clear, user-friendly language enables the reader to work their way through each set with clarity and ease. Although I have read it from cover to cover, re-read it in sections and referred to it numerous times to address specific health topics, I am amazed to discover that every time I pick it up I learn something new, or deepen my understanding of a previously learned subject.
Shoshanna's book is a gift from her heart and soul, rich beyond words. Those who read it will find it is a resource to be treasured.
What are you waiting for?.......2004-08-06
This book is unique among the ever growing catalogue of Qi Gong books now available. It is written by a woman who is a practitioner of of Oriental Medicine. Rarely do we see this type of book written by a medical professional with the practical experience to support what she teaches. It is written specifically for women. It was recognized early on that women have different health needs from men. Therefore treatment, including Qi gong exercises should be different. It teaches a full workout plan. Many books merely show exercises, leaving it up to you how to use them. And it includes the treatment of various disease to take your practice further and utilize Qi Gong as a personal tool.
Everything one needs to get started is here. Warm up exercises, explanation of theory, a detailed 20 minute workout and enough information to last a lifetime. The treatment of symptoms spans from anxiety to weightloss with everything in between specific for women's needs. This is a great book for any woman curious about learning the ancient exercise of Qi Gong. It is perfect for any practitioner to better understand the healing process and share exercises with others. And it is perfect for anyone who wants to take their health and healing process into their own hands.

A Tutorial in Culinary Creativity.......2001-12-14
I feel emotions about this book that I did not think that a cookbook could elicit from me.
For starters, the recipes themselves are fantastic. Over the years (I originally bought the hardback) I believe that I have tried at least 75% of them, among my favorites being the guacamole made from peas and the glazed brussel sprouts, of all things. The only recipe that didn't work out for me was the homemade sauerkraut, and the book has a whole chapter on sausages that just didn't appeal to me as a matter of personal taste.
But the recipes are only the beginning.
As educational as the surprising combinations are, the most valuable aspect of the book is content unusual in a cookbook: Michael Roberts includes a succinct prelimary discussion on flavors and how to marry, oppose, and juxtapose them, each of these verbs representing a different type of combination. For example, lemon and garlic is a flavor *marriage*; sweet and salty, like peanuts on an ice cream sundae, is a flavor *opposition*; and clove and red wine is a flavor *juxtaposition* (tasted at different times or on different parts of the tongue).
These three types of combination underlie all the recipes in the book. Roberts takes pains throughout to explain why his combinations work and to offer variations on the recipes. Together with his introductory chapter, this book offers the cook beyond the beginner stage a tutorial in culinary creativity.
The adventurous cook will not regret this purchase.
Every Recipe Is Wonderful.......2001-11-08
This has been my favorite cookbook since 1993! Many of the recipes are a bit of work, but all are worth the effort. The "Pork and Succotash Stew" is fabulous...the secret ingredient is caraway seed. Mmmm. I also love the "Pan-Roasted Lamb Chops with Cracked Pepper and Tarragon"...and be sure to try the "Chicken, Spinach, Eggplant, & Peanut Salad".

When Mattel's Hotwheels toy cars exploded onto the market in 1968, venerable Matchbox Toys met the challenge with its Superfast line. This Is a Book Which Grows In Its Reference Value.......2007-06-16
I have purchased both of Mack's MBSF books. This one sat there for a while pretty much unused, whereas Vol 1 got opened every day. However, as I get more into what this volume actually contains, I am finding in it a wealth of additional MBSF reference material e.g. on model number and name indexes, variation themes & product lines, etc, etc. This is making it a very valuable guide and companion supplement to Vol 1, especially given the wealth of MB issues since the 1990's. I consider it well worth the asking price for the serious MB collector. Give it time and it will prove its worth.
LOTS of data, few pics.......2007-04-02
This book is a great technical reference for those looking for variation listings. It does NOT provide a lot of pictures, or back story. A little more content on the development of the Superfast line would have been nice, but this book does serve a purpose to those chasing variations of certain models.
I also have Vol II of this book, and it is the same format.
This book is only half the story........2006-11-05
Helpful guide, however, it is part of a two volume set and you really need both volumes to effectively use this guide. Listed above is Volume 2 and it is loaded with pictures. The information that gives relavence to the pictures is contained in Volume 1. (Volume 1 has a blue title block and several red squares on the cover.) The 4 star rating is for the pair, this book by itself would only get 2 stars from this user.
