Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great book for planning & dreaming.......2003-07-14

This book is absolutely beautiful to look at and dream of how you can have your own sunroom. But it's more than just a wish book - Mr Tanner gives information that you can use on a smaller scale in your own home. He shows how you can work a garden room into your house for a relatively low price - all the way from skylights to whole glass paneled rooms.

You can plan a tropic green house (good for those orchids you've always wanted to grow) or even a small kitchen herb garden - great for those fresh delights for your cooking.

Mr Tanner also gives practival advice on wht types of plants do well in what setting. The Latin name, as well as the common name is given so you'll know what to get at the store. If that's not enough help for you, there's lots of glorious color photographs so you can recognize exactly what you're looking for when you see it.

Another section of the book deals with the basics of building a glass addition to your house. It thoroughly explains where the addition should ideally be constructed, what type of glass and framework should be used as well as giving sources to help obtain the supplies.

So if you're thinking of adding a sunroom, or just want to dream about it, I recommend this book highly.

The photos in this photo diary is quite small - usually put three in half page, and the text is so big for those small photos. -> It not so comfortable to read a book in this layout.

Also, most photos are not sharp.

                                1 out of 5 stars A Sleeper.......2004-05-22

This book was so boring that I didn't finish it. I forced myself to read 70%, but couldn't continue. While Mr. Nathan has plenty of historical facts, poems and other tidbits, this book feels more like a literary exercise than a book that truly captures the spirit and delight of birding (or bird watching).

5 out of 5 stars bird watchers bible.......2002-10-28

My grandfather has made a stunning book and it truely lets the reader see his deep passion for bird watching and his religious meaning to this hobbie. He captures real passion and makes this book a must have for birdwatchers everywhere.

                                5 out of 5 stars Poet's prose "diary" is a marvelous hybrid........1998-01-16

Jim Schley, South Strafford VT: Leonard Nathan is the author of nine fabulous collections of poems, and the book here reviewed is a hybrid, written in prose, neither fiction nor nonfiction precisely. I use the term "precisely" on purpose, because Nathan's work is replete with exact connections and combinations, images and phrases that defy passing quickly over.

In design and presentation, Nathan's new book is beautiful and compact. In plot, his meta-fictional [ital] Diary is oblique, left-handed in more ways than one, built up like a montage of ruminative passages such as those in a personal diary. One ostensible purpose of Nathan's "entries" is to record the excursions of Thursday's Children, an otherwise unaffiliated gang of aspiring naturalists who gather once a week to carpool to promising sites with their field guides and binoculars. The narrator - a version of Nathan himself, bookworm and unabashed amateur - insists upon the distinction between the serendipitous [ital] birdwatcher and the more zealous [ital] birder, who is "more hunter than looker-on, more passionate about having seen than seeing," and whose Life List is paramount. Nathan playfully interlaces in these pages accounts of hilarious field-trips (grown men and women piling into cars to hurry somewhere because someone has reported sighting), snatches of dreams, poems from various writers, and meditations upon the allure of finally seeing - really [ital] seeing - an elusive exemplar, the snow bunting, which he believes he's only glimpsed once from the edge of an eye. Running through the other diary entries is a series of conversations between poet and scientist, in this case an ornithologist who scornfully questions the idea that an artist could make any genuinely useful contribution to comprehension of the avian world. Our poet is bewildered by the scientist's rebuttals, and he repeatedly tries to reformulate a precept that the scientist will accept. This philosophical confrontation is fierce and grand, even as the genuine friendship of these two men of contrary sensibilities is insightfully dramatized.

I cannot recommend [ital] Diary of a Left-Handed Birdwatcher more delightedly. This is one of the most unusual and evocative books of prose I've read in a long while, as likely to please lovers of poetry as devotees of superb nature writing.

I'm impressed that my own group of friends in New England has become avid for birdwatching. Many of these are people who formerly lived seasonally in different houses, renting or house-sitting or even tenting, and who now have children and homes they've built. We've grown more alert to the other residents of our territory. The activities of the birds around us, arriving and nesting, mating and feeding and fledging then moving on in the fall, keep coming up in conversations as we pass on the sidewalk or in the aisles of a store - the first vireo heard, or last warbler; an unexpected glimpse of a scarlet tanager; the enormous gray goshawk on a maple bough.

In Genesis, Adam undertakes responsibility for assigning a name to each creature in existence, and ever since, poets have defended their task as comparably essential. In actual practice, even poets as skilled as Nathan are less likely to invent than refresh - using the shared vocabulary of our working-day language, to show all over again how bracingly words plunge us not [ital] out of but [ital] into what Denise Levertov calls the life around us. If the aim of scientific taxonomy is to be exhaustive, comprehensive, categorical, and discriminating, the aim of poetic rendering is to crisscross and blend. These are different but complementary modes of precision.

They are appropriate for introductory use as well as through adult level review and education. I have the wildflower and animal tracks guides and am looking forward to completing the set with other tags currently available. My only question now is, when are we going to find more topics?

Gabon is the ideal destination for naturalists, boasting easily accessible rain forests and reserves where an astonishing range of wildlife can be found and environmental conservation and research is being carried out. The country is particularly prized by birders. Excellent history, geography, and culture introductions underpin a practical guide that covers all the hard facts a visitor needs to know, including activities such as fishing, watersports, and whale and dolphin watching. The volcanic islands of São Tomé and Prìncipe lie to the west of Gabon. With a strong Portuguese influence, they are ripe for exploring by independent travelers who will discover an archipelago of sugarloaf peaks, idyllic beaches, and fertile rain forests hosting a range of endemic species. This is the first English travel guide to Gabon and the independent islands of São Tomé and Prìncipe.

I actually only visited São Tomé and I have to say that this guide, although short, is very detailed, both in terms of the historical background and of the present. The approach is straightforward and going through the places, and talking with the people, feels very close to what is described in the guide. Sophie did a great job in capturing the county's spirit.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for visitors to Gabon!.......2004-04-30

I reside in Libreville, Gabon and have not, until now, been able to find much literature about this place in English ... or French for that matter. Then this little gem was published! I take this little book with me everywhere I go, I make a point of consulting it before I plan a trip, ... where to eat in Cocobeach, where to stay in Nyonie, where to shop in Libreville ... it's all in there. I found a couple of phone numbers misprinted, but aside from that, the information on each of the places I have been to is up to date, useful and correct. This book tells it like it is, the good, the bad and the ugly! I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting or living in Gabon.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Buyer beware............2005-04-06

I will admit, I am in the design profession and am always looking for items to add to my personal and professional libraries. When I read the first review for this book, and saw how the book was both scarce and out of print, I went ahead and bought it - my mistake.

Basically this book is a monograph, in fact, a portfolio which could be construed as a marketing or recruitment tool. This is nothing against Supon Phornirunlit and his firm, Supon Design Group, its just to say that the firm is not old enough or diverse in experience to pull off a successful monograph. I have a hard time seeing through the many images of his office and employees. When I do, I see a colorful, yet homogeneous looking view of his firm's work. To be fair, there is some diversity among clientele and intended audience; each chapter of the book addresses the needs of a client from a different business sector. However, this does not excuse how this book fails to elevate the understanding of the deisgn professions or the creative process in general. The book lacks a narrative that progresses from the firm's early development, showing the highs and lows along the way to establishing a prominant and vibrant firm. Look, the firm was founded in 1988, and although you can see that it made a killing off the new companies marketing themselves and those reinventing their image during the dot com boom, there's really a lack of works preceeding and following that moment. Instead of seeing case studies that span the life of the firm and critically examine the success and failure of managing an office and, more important, the design process, this book presents a very glossy and edited view of clients, completed works and the Supon Design Group and a firm.

*If one seeks additional materials focusing on critical examination and understanding of the design process or a good visual demonstration of graphic art and design, then I might suggest Area (ISBN 07148-43253) or Advertising Today (ISBN 07148-43873) both are available in hardback and paperback.

                                            Book Description

This architectural history of the Citadel of Cairo uses indices from maps, photographs, plans of hitherto unstudied structures, and a large array of historical documents to chronologically reconstruct the Citadel's development from its foundation by Salah al-Din until it reached its most monumental form in the middle of the fourteenth century. The study analyzes the influence of Mamluk socio-political hierarchy on the conceptualization of the Citadel's spaces and forms; assesses its impact on medieval Cairo; proposes a new interpretation for the development of Mamluk royal architecture; and presents new definitions for a number of medieval architectural terms. By weaving the history of the Citadel together with the history of Cairo and the Mamluk system, this book is relevant to historians of architecture and urbanism and medieval historians.

                                                Book Description

At the height of the Cold War in 1954, President Eisenhower inaugurated a program of cultural exchange that sent American dancers and other artists to political "hot spots" overseas. This peacetime gambit by a warrior hero was a resounding success.

Among the artists chosen for international duty were Jose Limon, who led his company on the first government-sponsored tour of South America; Martha Graham, whose famed ensemble crisscrossed southeast Asia; Alvin Ailey, whose company brought audiences to their feet throughout the South Pacific; and George Balanchine, whose New York City Ballet crowned its triumphant visits to Western Europe and Japan with an epoch-making tour of the Soviet Union in 1962. The success of Eisenhower's program of cultural export led directly to the creation of the National Endowment for the Arts and Washington's Kennedy Center.

Naima Prevots draws on an array of previously unexamined sources, including formerly classified State Department documents, congressional committee hearings, and the minutes of the Dance Panel, to reveal the inner workings of "Eisenhower's Program," the complex set of political, fiscal, and artistic interests that shaped it, and the ever-uneasy relationship between government and the arts in the US.

5 out of 5 stars Dance as an instrument of foreign policy.......2005-12-18

Long a champion of fine arts, Professor Naima Prevots has achieved a tour de force with this book: Dance for Export; Cultural Diplomacy and the Cold War. Here a serious scholar will find stunning reportage on many aspects of dance as a form of performing art. For this present review we can focus advantageously on three aspects: diplomacy, history, aesthetics.

In her "Prologue," Dr. Prevots sets the scene for diplomacy found in international politics during the decade shortly after the end of World War II. The Eisenhower presidency was a period early in the tension between major world powers of that era. Ideology was a matter of central concern for protagonists, the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. An impasse of policy was seen in threat analysis focused on mutual assured destruction in nuclear warfare to temper any projection of power. We see an emergence of dance as an instrument of foreign policy for the U.S.

Excellence in writing history is measured in attention to detail as one element and here we see our author's forceful scholarship in action. Important persons in government and art are identified. Events and decisions are identified thoroughly so that we have a source book in politics and management as well as in the structure and content of dance in that era of the Cold War. We have the facts presented in a vivid and flowing style that holds a reader's attention. In this vivid integration of relevant details we have a view with results of probing analysis made coherent from disparate, less known archives.

Dr. Prevots adds to her larger achievement some aesthetic observations to give insight into dance as a form of fine art. She says of Martha Graham's Appalachian Spring: "The work was about love's joys and fears, and about the emotional confrontation between new frontiers and established boundaries." We see here a lead into thematic apperception of this art work. Later our author aptly cites a poem of Walt Whitman to take a theme of "athletic democracy" into a discussion of exporting dance from Native Americans. Dance for Export includes a splendid collection of photographs to heighten the impact of our author's panoramic perspective.

Scholars in many disciplines can learn from this distinctive work. Insights for ethics, politics, management, dance and human nature are produced in abundance. Connoisseurs of foreign policy and dance alike will find much of perennial interest in this work.

I will be honest up front - this book is about my Grandfather Wallace and his brother Harold, their uncle Bill and a mate of theirs Arthur. However until last year I never knew this book existed - in fact because of family issues I never knew my Grandfather Wallace. My Father's cousin has edited this book and it is skillfully blended.

The book is really a whole bunch of letters from the boys from Argyle (the 1200 acre Campbell property near Wellington NSW). It provides a brief overview of the family as well as updates at the end and is a chronological acount of there experiences during WWI - at Gallipoli, in France, on leave, their experiences of authority and the subtle way that things changed for them. The letters are written from the boys to the rest of the Campbell family and friends - so you get to see what was on everyones mind during this terrible time

I would recommend spending a whole day to read this book in one go because it is too dis-jointed if you break in up over a period of few days or weeks. The editors have provided commentary where it is needed and as they say it is not their book but the book belongs to the boys from Argyle of which 3 returned alive.

I found it strange to read letters addressed by my kith and kin whom I never had the chance to meet - but a work such as this has keep the memory of 4 very ordinary Australians alive. There are photographs through the book of various characters family friends and the like which makes it a very personal book for any one that reads it.

IT IS A SHAME THAT IT IS CLASSED AS A REMAINDERED BOOK BY THE NEW OWNERS OF KANGAROO PRESS AS A REPRINT WILL MOST LIKLEY NOT BE FORTHCOMING.
