Book Description
Glen of Loch Trool. Spring 1808.
Davina McKie is a bonny lass of seventeen, as clever as they come and a gifted musician. Unable to speak since childhood, she is doted on by her belligerent younger brothers, Will and Sandy, who vow to protect their silent sister.
When the lads are forced to depart the glen, Jamie McKie intends to brighten his daughter’s summer by escorting Davina to the Isle of Arran. Her cousins make her welcome at the manse, and the parish delights in hearing their talented fiddler.
But when she catches the eye of a handsome young Highlander on Midsummer Eve, sheltered Davina is unprepared for the shocking events that follow.
A timeless story of passion and revenge, of lost innocence and shattered dreams, Grace in Thine Eyes explores the sorrow of unspeakable shame and the gift of immeasurable grace.
“Just as Davina is a master of the fiddle, Liz Curtis Higgs is a master of the written word.”
–Teresa Medeiros, New York Times best-selling author
“A phenomenal story that beautifully parallels its biblical counterpart.”
–Tracie Peterson, best-selling author of What She Left for Me
“Absolutely wonderful. Higgs manages to turn history and imagery and language into an unforgettable work of art.”
–B. J. Hoff, author of A Distant Music
A Reader’s Guide and Scottish Glossary Are Included

True Grace and greatness for Grace in Thine Eyes.......2007-09-28
This story is a beautiful one where you'll find yourself getting involved with the characters on an emotional level. This seems to happen to me every time I pick up one of Liz Curtis Higg's books. Not being a lover of romance/fiction I was at first skeptical about picking up Liz Curtis' book Grace in Thine Eyes. This book goes much much deeper than that. The characters are imperfect, lively, and very real, you'll love some of them, be intrigued by some and just cringe at some. She writes reality into her stories. You won't be able to put this one down! I promise you'll be moved by this story!
Stunning.......2007-09-25
I cried through so much of this book, but it's not that kind of book. Its an amazing story of a young lady and her family and what happens to her. Higgs builds her novels on complex, deep, realistic, and profound characters and then writes out their lives like a rich tapestry. This book is faster paced and more dangerous feeling than her first three in the series (don't worry, this is like a sequal to those three, so you can read it seperately). But the most amazing thing I think Higgs does is write out the feelings, thoughts, and prayers of her characters. Reading their faith will change yours.
Grace in Thine Eyes.......2007-02-17
I know this is a retelling of the Biblical story in which Dinah's brothers kill Shechem but I had hoped that Liz Curtis Higgs might spare Somerled's life for the sake of fiction and a more modern setting and let him off with threats or injury instead. I was disappointed that Davina and Somerled did not get to be together because I loved both characters and felt that they were meant to be together and were completely perfect for each other. Adding Graham in at the end just seemed like a way to placate the readers to give them closure but to me fell flat because nothing could replace what existed and could have been between Davina and Somerled. It was still a good book, but the only parts of the book that I truly enjoyed reading were the parts with Somerled and Davina.

I love it when a book whisks me away to another time and place! In this story, novelist Liz Curtis Higgs kept me spellbound off the coast of Scotland.
I've come to love Liz through her poignant and humorous columns in Today's Christian Woman magazine, and so I wasn't surprised at all to see Grace in Thine Eyes on CBA's list of bestsellers. Fans won't be disappointed in her latest novel, which tackles the tough issues of betrayal, rape, and revenge.
No, this is not exactly light summer reading. But who says Christian women can't handle the heavy stuff? Set on the Isle of Arran in the year 1808, Higgs introduces us to the stunning 17-year-old heroine, Davina McKie.
She's a gifted fiddler, though a childhood accident destroyed her ability to speak. To quell loneliness after her twin brothers leave for school in Edinborough, Davina's father sends her to visit cousins on the island. One mid-summer night, she catches the eye of a dashing young Highlander, who seduces her, in a plot taken straight from Genesis 34. (You'll scarcely begin the novel before you'll feel compelled to read the true Biblical account.)
While preparing to write, Higgs visited the actual setting where the story takes place. She tells readers, "I found Davina's bonny Arran amid the heather-carpeted hills, hidden beneath the midst." (Oh, if only I could have squeezed into her suitcase!)
The author immersed herself in the music, poetry, and cuisine of Scotland while staying in a restored stable behind Kilmichael House Hotel. In our modern culture of anything goes, I found the novel's 19th-century moral values quaint and refreshing. The reader's guide and Scottish glossary make this the perfect novel for book clubs.
If only a field trip could be included with the reading!

Heartbreakingly Beautiful - Like the rest of the series..........2007-01-04
A wonderful account of the Biblical story of Dinah set in the lowlands of Scotland. I appreciate how Liz Curtis Higgs makes it simple to "put on the skin" of each character -- you can easily see how YOU could have made the same choices that would have led to the same wonderful or terrible outcome. I also liked that she expanded the personalities of all the characters in the story. The Bible doesn't spend a lot of time on Dinah's story, but Higgs makes you see how individual choices and individual personalities can create the atmosphere for sin and tragedy. A wonderful read, as are the first three: Thorn In My Heart, Fair Is The Rose, and Whence Came A Prince. Can't wait until the next series!

Heart Pumping Series.......2007-09-06
From beginning to end all 4 of these books kept me in emotional agony as the plot thickened, then thickened some more! Liz Curtis Higgs has brought her "A Game" in this emotional series. I found myself in emotional turmoil while grocery shopping and pondering the characters and their turbulent quest for love. Have recommended to many friends and they have all shared my enthusiasm for this series. You won't be disappointed!

Book Description
Join the investigation as lead character, Arson Investigator Phil Langtry, searches every clue to uncover a serial arsonist. Could it possibly be 'one of their own'? This scintillating story was confiscated from the author's home at the time of his arrest. Many believe it parallels his own activities while working as the fire captain and lead arson investigator for the Glendale Fire Department, California. He is currently serving a life sentence at Lompoc Penitentiary, California. This uncut story continues to be a source of ongoing controversy as recently witnessed on Investigative Reports, Nova and Arrest & Trial.
Customer Reviews:
Written by a firebug.......2004-11-21
This book was written by a convicted firebug, who was a fire inspector for the Glendale, California, Fire Department. The manuscript was found in his belongings after he was apprehended, during a search of his home, on a search warrant.
The story was on the A&E Channel, describing many of the fires he set. Some were in buildings, and in one, children died. Not a paragon of virtue. Although the book is supposed to be fiction, it is patterned after actual facts as only he knew the details. He often astounded members of his department with his deductions on how the fires started; but he was not brilliant. He had first hand knowledge.
The proceeds of the sale go to remuneration of the damages his victims suffered, as is common on books by criminals. A book by Joseph Wambaugh is a good companion to this one, if you want to look into a sick mind.

Clarifier.......2002-10-06
'Points of Origin...playing with fire' is a chilling insight into the psyche of a serial arsonist. What makes this book different is the fact that it was written by former fire captain and highly revered arson investigator John L. Orr now serving four consecutive life sentences for the deaths of four people who died in one of the many fires he was convicted of starting.
NOTE: Neither John Orr nor his family will profit from the sale of 'Points of Origin...playing with fire'. A restitution fund has been set up with the State of California Board of Control through the Attorney General's Office and a portion of the proceeds is being deposited into that account.
Many, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the attorney general's office, Los Angeles and Glendale Police Departments and members of various local fire departments, believe that this fiction novel was a 'roadmap' to John Orr's crimes. The two main fictional characters, Phil Langtry, an arson investigator and Aaron Stiles, a serial arsonist who also happens to be a firefighter, closely parallels the "two faces" of John Leonard Orr.
Points of Origin...playing with fire is most assuredly the companion book to Joseph Wambaugh's Fire Lover and a must read...
Buy the Wambaugh book instead........2002-09-28
As can be understood from the Joseph Wambaugh book "Fire Lover," this book is essentially a journal of the pyromaniac and murderer, John Orr. It includes a arsonist act of a large hardware store that killed a toddler and his grandmother. As the former book discusses, this was the actual event of Los Angeles fire that left a boy, grandmother, and others dead. The author, John Orr, is the culprit. I read the Wambaugh book, but I have not read the convicted killer's book. I have no intention of giving him the satisfaction of buying the book. I hope that he reads this review. I would like for him to know that while I am not a proponent of the death penalty, I do believe that he is one who would deserve it.

I purchased this book to increase my knowledge base and have found it to be an excellent source of information. This is great for new as well as experienced nurses who work with breastfeeding clients.
Breast Feeding the Newborn.......2000-07-02
As a training Lactation Cunsultant in a local hospital in Israel, I have been working with breastfeeding women for over two years. Often, differences in opinion between the Nursing Staff and Lactation Consultants surface. I found this book to help promote one uniformed goal; the breastfeeding mother. With all of Ms Biancuzzo's up-to-date research and information, and with the book's easy to read format, this book is a welcomed addition to my library.

Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck has been setting food trends at his world-famous Spago restaurants since they opened in the early 1980s. But when it comes to dessert, he wisely lets his pastry chef, Mary Bergin, stay with the classics (though admittedly she does them in ultrasophisticated ways). Here, as a follow-up to her Spago Desserts cookbook, Bergin's chocolate indulgences range from a decadently satiny Chocolate Cheesecake, and assorted brownies, to her complex Hazelnut Dome, a round of ethereal chocolate and hazelnut cake mounded with rich mousse, all concealed in a chocolate shell. Among the most memorable recipes here are the Heavenly Banana Soufflé Surprise and Peanut Butter Cups. Melted chocolate is the secret surprise at the heart of the classic soufflé. Thanks to the recipe-writing work of Judy Gethers, you will see that this unforgettable composition is really easy to make. The Peanut Butter Cups, balls of butter-silkened peanut butter set into chocolate-filled mini-cups, would make E.T. forget about going home.
Understanding time pressures faced by even devoted home cooks, Gethers tells how far ahead each of the nearly 100 extravaganzas in Spago Chocolate can be made. Right at the top of each recipe there is a list of all the equipment needed to help you get organized.
Alan Richardson's 26 color photos show that these desserts are impressive yet approachable. Most are simple enough for a confident cook to make, thanks to this book's user-friendly recipes. --Dana Jacobi

Not recommended.......2005-01-06
If you like the idea of using Mary Bergin's recipes, try to get them off the internet. I made the chocolate truffle cake off a Food Network recipe (she was a guest chef) and it worked out very well. I tried to make it again using this book and it did not work.
For the marble pound cake, the instructions indicated that a double recipe would work in a 10 inch bundt. There was way too much batter - so much that it would not even fit in the pan so I used about 2\3 of the batter. Also, the instructions called for twice the amount of cocoa in the chocolate part than should be suggested. If I had used the suggested amount, I would have had pound cake mixed with brownies. Finally, the temperature suggested was too high for a cake that dense. The top burned and the center was raw when I removed it from the oven. There are serious deficiencies in this book - I suggest you find another chocolate recipe resource.
Good, But Not Great.......2004-09-02
Desserts at Spago are a very big deal. This cookbook is a collection of the more popular chocolate desserts translated for the home kitchen by Spago's executive pastry chef. On the whole, the author has done a pretty good job of adaptation. The result is a decent, but not exceptional chocolate cookbook.
The gold dust jacket and famous name of this book at first made me skeptical. I was impressed, however, by the well chosen selection of recipes. Virtually all of them are good ones that are worth doing; there are very few bad ones that are to be ignored. The only ones I had trouble with were the ice creams, since I do not have an ice cream machine. One can quibble here and there (chocolate mousse without gelatin; some of the candies were terrible), but the overall quality of the recipes is very high. Each recipe has a list of equipment that is required, and also a note as to where the stopping points are.
It has the following chapters, each with about a dozen recipes: cakes; small cakes, crepes, and pastries; cookies and candies; pies, tarts, and cheesecakes; souffles, brulees, pots de cremes, and other creamy desserts; frozen desserts; fillings and sauces.
On the negative side, there are a surprising large number of deficiencies. A large stand mixer and food processor are required; there are no alternate instructions for manual mixing and preparation. Some of the recipes are simple, while others require a fair amount of skill; some sort of rating system would be helpful for the home cook. The food styling in the photos often do not match the decorating instructions in the recipes, such as a Gateau St. Honore pastry tip used to decorate the photo of the Meringue Napoleon. Many recipes require whipping egg whites or folding, yet there are no detailed instructions for the home cook as to how to do these things. About half of the recipes are lax when specifying when something is finished baking or properly whipped; the cooking instructions for sauces in the last chapter are particularly large offenders in this area. The chapter on cakes seems to imply that regular and non-stick cake pans are interchangeable; they are not, since the oven temperature and baking times will change. It would also be nice to know what brands of chocolate were used in developing the recipes. Information about flour measurement, egg size, and cocoa type is in a small section buried at the back of the book that is easily overlooked (where you will also find a very good list of equipment needed to do the recipes in the book). Also absent is information on how to cut the various baked goods: serrated knife, French chef knife, wet knife, dry and hot knife, angel food knife, etc.
Yummy desserts!!!!.......2004-07-01
I've made quite a few desserts out of this cookbook and they were all fabulous. The Fudgy chocolate cake is so incredible. You have to be precise and follow the recipes perfectly to get the end result, but when you do they are wonderful. The chocolate mousse, chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter brownies are to die for. I have to say I made some goof ups on some first tries and learned from my mistakes. For example, the peanut butter brownies overflowed the first time. I put a little less batter in the second time. The Fudgy Chocolate cake should not jiggle when you take it out of the oven. One of my pans seems to cook to the temp/time given and another you have to cook it about 10 minutes longer to get the same result. I now have four kids under the age of four and now find myself using the Cake Mix Doctor more to make cakes, but long to cook one of my favorite recipes out of this book.
Truly Great Book but Not for the Faint of Heart!.......2003-01-14
This is one of the best dessert cookbooks I have in my library. I've been baking since I was five when I started out cracking eggs in my Grandmother's restaurant. She taught me much about patience and paying strict attention to detail. She also taught me that if it was a humid day that I needed to be more careful and selective about what I wanted to bake that day and how to buy the very best and freshest flour and other ingredients. You must start with the very best ingredients to do these recipes justice. Before attempting the more difficult or unfamiliar recipes in this cookbook, one must really be familiar with all the basic baking techniques. If you use a measuring cup meant for liquids to measure out your flour you are headed for disaster. Yes, these are simple, well known rules but it is surprising how a litle mistake can mean the difference between success and failure. You should also know how to buy, store and temper chocolate for the recipes you are making. This is not a cookbook for the faint of heart but if you are willing to dive in and indulge yourself this book can be great fun. If you don't enjoy this cookbook and aren't successful with it, sell it back on Amazon and move on. Spending precious energy beating a dead horse doesn't help you and won't effect the sale of this book. Try another book:-)

BEADS OF THE WORLD.......2007-05-07
THIS GUY KNOWS BEADS. A GREAT REFERENCE BOOK, AND PRICE GUIDE.
For buyers, not researchers.......2003-12-22
After 20 years working in Africa and collecting beads, I find this the best book of its type for people actually going into African markets, American bead shows, and flea markets looking to buy rare or collectible beads. It is not the right book for someone who doesn't yet know the basics about where and how the major types of beads are/were fabricated, how they have traveled, and the ethnographics associated with their past and present uses. (For those subjects, try Dubin, J. Allen, Liu, Picard, and Beckworth's Africa Adorned.) But for ballpark pricing, comparisons, and availability, there's nothing better in print.
Excellent!.......2003-11-25
I boughtthis book for my mom - she was getting really into hunting for beads (and buttons but that's another story) at yard sales, antique stores etc. She didn't really know what she was buying - just what she liked - so I bought this book for her about a year ago and she has loved it ever since. There are a lot of pictures, descriptions and background info on the different types of beads. If nothing else, it has provided a good foundation for her in her hunt for more beads so she knows a little more about the types/styles to look for (in addition to just what she happend to like)
I DON'T KNOW BEADS.......2000-10-16
AND THIS BOOK DIDN'T HELP ME UNDERSTAND THEM ANY BETTER. IT JUST CONFUSED ME MORE
NOT SO GOOD.......2000-10-16
IS MY OPINION OF THIS BOOK. NOT ALL BEADS ARE PRICED AND NOT TOO INFORMATIVE.
Book Description
French mourning wreaths; Ukrainian Easter eggs; Norwegian bodices; Chinese slippers; Pakistani hair tassels; Egyptian belly-dancing outfits; Central Asian tent decorations; Maasai wedding dresses; Xhosa neckpieces; Athabaskan shot pouches and Sioux moccasins...from Greenland to Bali, beadwork from all around the world is illustrated and its history revealed in this remarkable book.
The amazing worldwide transformation of very small, usually uniformly colored, beads into intricate articles or embellishments is turned into a coherent story for the first time. The earliest drawn glass beads were produced around 200 BC in various locations in India and exported for centuries along the major trade routes to Africa and Asia. From the 16th century on beads made in Europe became highly desirable trade items and spread throughout the world.
After an introduction and an in-depth survey of bead manufacturing centers in Europe and Asia, Beadwork is organized into five principal sections, with over forty topics in all. Each of four main regional sections-- Africa; the Americas; Asia, Oceania and the Arabian Gulf; and Europe-- outlines the history and trade routes of beads in the area, with an accompanying map, before examining what has been produced in detail. A fifth section surveys construction and techniques, from brick stitch and herringbone weave to lazy stitch and three-dimensional structures.
With over six hundred illustrations, information on collecting and conserving beadwork, and on where to see public collections, this is the first survey to reveal the wealth and diversity of traditional beadwork from around the world. The result will inspire beadworkers, collectors and designers, and anyone interested in art, craft, and fashion.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous! .......2007-07-21
This is a fabulous, beautiful book as are many Rizzoli books. It is not perfect as to attributions etc, so scholars may quibble, but for inspiration and a wonderful overview of international beading with small beads it is terrific! I am going off for my first class in peyote beading this morning and this was a perfect source of ideas and information to get me charged up! It is not, however, a how to book. There is a technical section at the end describing how the various techniques are done but not in anyway sufficient to make any projects. The descriptions are clear but not detailed enough for that. To attempt any of these techniques the reader will need a good teacher and most probably additional books.
A Fabulous Overview.......2003-06-03
This is a wonderful book. It is beautifully photographed with sumptuous examples of beadwork traditions from around the world. The text covers each tradition rather lightly, but the information the authors do provide is solid.
That said, some of the size and proportion choices for the photographs make no sense. Entire garmets will be tiny, while beaded trinkets will be magnified. The most annoying example is the Bagobo shirt on page 137. This garmet is worked in the unusual shell and bead embroidery found in the Philipines, and the technique is discussed over several paragraphs in the accompanying text. However, the picture is so miniaturized that if you were not reading a book on beadwork, you would have no idea that the design on the shirt is any kind of applied decoration, much less beads and shells. Meanwhile, a photo of an unremarkable (and undiscussed) purse covers half the page.
A huge disappointment is the complete lack of information about where any of these beautiful pieces may be. For those doing bead research or travelling (or both), it would be helpful to know which are in collections that the public can access either through web contact or museum visits.
Neither of these should deter buyers interested in beads or beadwork. This book is a keeper. If there is a second edition, however, I would hope for the addition of information about the collections from which the beadworks come.
breathtaking.......2003-04-13
i've just re-started beading after a hiatus of about ten years, so i am not familiar with recent beading books and can't compare this to any other overviews that might be out there.
however, in and of itself, this is a beautiful, well-illustrated, far-ranging work. africa is well-represented. north AND south american indian work is represented, including the work of the inuit and northwestern nations. there is a section on greenland beadwork, short, but more than i have found yet. asia, india, oceania, the middle and near east and europe have their sections. the final section is a brief but reasonably adequate, description of techniques.
the photos are breathtaking. and dangerous. i have already mentally designed at least five new projects. the only complaint i have is the lack of dating for some of what are probably 19th century postcards and photos and for what may be relatively recent photos.
i think this would be a worthwhile addition to even extensive beading collections.
Finally! The History of Beadwork in Beautiful Form!.......2002-11-12
I'll start with a quote from the introduction "our aim is to draw attention to objects decorated with, and constructed from, the tiny glass 'seed' beads" (pg 8 introduction). I will attest to the fact that the authors have succeeded in the most magnificent fashion!
Divided into deceptively simple sounding sections, this book will take you on a trip around the world and through history. The six sections are: Bead Manufacturing Centers; Africa; the Americas; Asia, Oceania, and the Arabian Gulf; Europe; and Construction and Techniques. Then each of these sections is divided into the the various countries and regions covered with the broad section heading. There are photographs everywhere - color, black & white, historical, and studio quality. This is a very visual book for a visual medium.
I've always felt as a beader that I am carrying on a tradition that goes back centuries, this book pays homage to the traditions from around the world. It is an incredible resource that belongs on every beader's shelf for inspiration and rememberance of all that has come before. This book will be to beadwork what "The History of Beads" is to beads and bead collectors.
TWO NOTES:
ONE: The section on Construction and Techniques is not meant to teach you how to do a particular type of beadwork, but to give you an idea of what is involved. There are several excellent teaching books available.
TWO: On page 151, there is a set of beaded sleeves from a dress from Western Europe that are absolutely breath-taking.

Book Description
A visual guide to the architecture, design, decoration, and furnishings of the British house of the industrial era, with more than 700 illustrations. Now in paperback. This richly illustrated volume traces the development of the British terraced house from 1774 to 1914. It documents the building codes and customs of the times, surveys the architectural detail of each period, and examines the architectural history of the exterior as well as the interior design and decor. The authors present the subject chronologically by style, looking at how life was lived in and around the house: lighting, color, wallpaper, windows, doors, and gardens are all addressed. Enhanced with hundreds of photos as well as images from the pattern books of builders and craftsmen, this is an excellent reference for those interested in architectural history and period decoration. 192 pp 8 1/2 x 11 230 color & 500 b/w illustrations

Book Description
Recently interest has surged in what Jean Dubuffet called Art Brut, “raw art” produced by persons operating outside cultural norms, reflecting inner need rather than any “official” artistic attitude. Of the known practitioners of Art Brut, one of the most gifted was the Swiss peasant Adolf Wölfli. From 1895, when he was thirty-one, until his death in 1930, Wölfli was incarcerated in Waldau hospital, severely afflicted with rage and depression. Supplied with colored pencils and paper by his primary physician, Walter Morgenthaler, he began to draw. Morgenthaler’s pathbreaking study of Wölfli and his art, published in 1921, aimed at the center of contemporary debates about the relationships between creativity, madness, and art. This first English-language edition includes twenty-four color reproductions of Wölfli’s art and Wölfli’s brief account of his own life.
Book Description
Screenwriter and novelist Norma Barzman’s extraordinary memoir is a unique record of the political tempests of the post-war era and the rise of McCarthyism. It is an unforgettable story studded with adventure, sex, celebrity and gossip, and features a larger-than-life cast of supporting characters including Pablo Picasso, Sophia Loren, Charlton Heston, Ingrid Bergman, John Wayne, Anthony Quinn, and a very young Marilyn Monroe. Eight pages of fascinating photographs are featured in this courageous and critically acclaimed book.
Customer Reviews:
Condemned out of her own mouth.......2003-12-04
This book is really not good. I am very interested in the blacklist period and screenwriting - despite the title this book does an awful job of telling you anything about those things.
All you learn about is Norma Barzman herself, and even though you only hear her side of the story, by the middle of her book you come to hate her, condemned out of her own mouth as a self-obsessed hypocrite.
How is she a hyprocrite? She's a supposed "communist" living in luxury in a South of France estate, employing servants to raise her kids.
She's a wife who shags all her loyal husband's friends behind his back.
She's someone who to this day calls herself a screenwriter when she has only one produced screenplay to her name, a 1953 Italian B-movie. She was shagging the friend of her husband who agreed to produce it.
It's a very irritating book, and really is best avoided.
What a phony!.......2003-08-13
This memoir of the alleged struggles of blacklisted, privileged, self-centered writer and adultress Norma Barzman reads like the chore list of some spoiled Beverly Hills trophy wife. Her supposed Communist ideology is all arm's length and she doesn't seem to have suffered at all after being exiled from the U.S. - in fact, as she puts it herself, she had "the time of her life" in France. So what's this drama queen's beef?
Bravo !A Racy and Riveting Read!.......2003-06-29
God, this book is so sexy and thrilling, compared to the other worthy, dull, snoozy blacklist memoirs out there. Ms. Barzman has really lived a very full life and leaves no stones unturned, about her personal and professional frustrations, her life as a commie, her hubby being jealous, the umpteen affairs, her glitzy starstudded life in Hollywood and in Europe...the gossip is worth the price alone, but its much more than that; its fiercly political, feministic...and get this, she's still a political toughie, uncomprising and stilling fighting the good fight! Bravo!
