Halfway House, Katharine Noel's triumphant debut, does far more than expose the highs and lows of battling mental illness; rather, it leaves readers with a sense of longing that transcends the subject matter. Told from the perspective of five family members, Noel expertly captures each character's essence with unapologetic honesty, creating sympathies that would falter under a less gifted writer. The result is a profound look at how a crisis can both destroy and reinvent a seemingly typical family.
Set in rural New Hampshire, Halfway House tells the story of the Voorster family, whose lives are upended when 17-year-old Angie suffers a breakdown and is eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As Angie shuffles between hospitals, dorm rooms, halfway houses, and her childhood home, the side effects of her disease and treatment impact each member of her family. Her father Pieter, a Dutch-born cellist, retreats into himself, while her mother Jordana begins an affair. Angie's brother Luke finds comfort in his girlfriends, especially Wendy, whom he meets while at college in Wisconsin. Eventually, familial relationships must be broken in order to be reinvented. In the process, family dynamics must shift, and each character must confront their own demons in order to emerge on the other side.
From One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest to Girl, Interrupted, the subject of mental illness is hardly uncharted in modern literature. What Noel does is go beyond the disease to explore the consequences of crisis, both punishing and redemptive, without compromise or excuses. That is what makes Halfway House a wonder, and a pleasure to behold. --Gisele Toueg
Book Description
One day, Angie Voorster—diligent student, all-star swimmer and ivy-league bound high school senior—dives to the bottom of a pool and stays there. In that moment, everything the Voorster family believes they know about each other changes. Katharine Noel’s extraordinary debut illuminates the fault lines in one family’s relationships, as well as the complex emotional ties that bind them together.
With grace and precision rarely seen in a first novel, Noel guides her reader through a world where love is imperfect, and where longing for an imagined ideal can both destroy one family’s happiness and offer them redemption. Halfway House introduces a powerful, eloquent new literary voice.

Interesting Story of Mental Illness.......2007-09-26
I enjoyed this book. I liked the way that the story was told in different perspectives. It was interesting to see how the main character's mental illness affected her brother and parents. I would recommend this book to anyone!
Depressing.......2007-07-18
I found this to be one of the most depressing novels I've read in a long time. Not because of Angie's mental illness which was really the only interesting aspect but because of the other characters. Ugh. I could not find one positive thing to react to in either of her parents....both struck me as self-obsessed depressives. Luke and Angie seemed to have some spunk at least but even his girlfriend, Wendy, seemed flat to me. Reading about Jordana and the baby bunny rabbit at the end did me in. Was it supposed to be some clever metaphor for her (failed) relationships? To me the book ended with not much hope or resolve and by the end I wish I hadn't wasted my time.
Not even halfway decent.......2007-06-17
Katherine Noel's debut novel reads like she wanted to write a book about a girl with bipolar disorder and built the story out from there, making sure the family was sufficiently screwed up and that each plot point served the greater theme. The end result feels forced, mechanical; above all, inauthentic.
It's a shame, really, given that in the hands of a more capable writer, Angela Voorster might be an effective protagonist. She's headed to an Ivy League college, a star athelete and suddenly stricken with mental illness in the middle of a swim meet. What's most interesting about her is that she never quite comes to terms with her bipolar disorder. It's as much a part of her as her hair color or height, another stage of her life that will surely pass. Though at times the descriptions of other halfway house residents or Angela's post-breakdown interactions with friends and family can be tiresome, Angela is, at her core, an inspired character. What proves that is that she doesn't always think or do what you'd expect.
When Noel writes in Angela's point of view, the narrative becomes wrought with conflict. Perhaps switching perspectives is the author's major mistake here. As they tell their sides of the story, the reader can't help but want to skip forward and follow Angela again. The supporting Voorsters are too thinly drawn to carry such huge chunks of the novel. Anyone could predict marital trouble for Angela's parents and the standoffish reactions of her brother; they don't need extra time and their actions feel like padding that just distracts from the main story.
Very true to life account of a family struggling.......2007-06-07
Ms. Noel's treatment of this story is wonderful. A young woman's mental illness just rips this family up, and we are allowed to read from the point of view of each participant. It is very real and touching.
couldn't put it down.......2007-04-18
I couldn't believe that this was this authors first novel. It is absolutely awesome. Her writing gives you a very vivid picture of what it must be like to live with someone with bi-polar disease. It seems that the book would be depressive, but it is just the opposite. It is insightful and captures the compassion and anguish that this girls family feels as it struggles to cope with her illness. The story is told beautifully; literally couldn't put it down until I finished it.

He ain't Heavy, He's my Brother.......2006-09-26
This is the fifth novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth in Rome at the time of Vespasian. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on her part to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in the Roman world of circa AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop. In this the fifth novel Falco and Helena Justina seem like old friends.
Falco is eager to get back to the hustle and bustle of Rome after what has seemed like an endless journey from Germania where his last adventure took him. Falco and Helena are shocked to find the apartment in Rome has been ransacked and used by squatters. Falco has been talked into staying with his mother until he finds out that she already has a lodger, an ex-legionary friend of Festus, Falco's brother and this so called "friend" is demanding money he says he is owed to him by Festus from a business venture.
The next day the ex-legionary is found stabbed to death and the chief suspect is guess who? Falco has his work cut out to prove that he is innocent, find the real killer and also prove that his brother is innocent of the crime too. The last part won't be easy because it is just the sort of crude justice that Festus would employ. As if that wasn't bad enough Falco may have to call on someone else for help. The last person he wants to be indebted to . . . Geminus, formerly Marcus Didius Favonius, Falco's father. If his mother finds out his life won't be worth living.
Great Stuff!.......2002-12-04
This is an excellent book. It's sharp and witty like all Didius Falco books, but in this one we see a more vulnerable Falco as he tries to get rid of a lot of preconceived notions about his father. Geminus Falco is a wonderful character, and I certainly hope we see more of him in upcoming books. In this book Falco and his father are working together to try to clear his late brother's name and some very outstanding debts. Falco gets in a lot of scrapes as usual, but this is more of a caper book than the others I've read so far. It's great fun, and hard to put down.
A masterful mix of history and mystery.......2002-05-05
I've been a fan of Lindsey Davis for some time. I am an amateur historian who is especially interested in ancient Rome, so I've read dozens of books on the subject. I am amazed at the wealth of detail contained in this book (and in all of Davis' Falco mysteries, all of which I've read). Such minute attention to detail not only provides an absorbing background to Davis' stories, but also testifies to her admirable efforts at presenting a plausible snapshot of ancient Rome, its geography, its history, and its populace. Davis' novels are both literature and history. This would not be exceptional were it not for the fact that Davis is a hell of a story-teller. Her tantalizing mysteries are spiced with the day-to-day details of life in ancient Rome, and the result is a fascinating read. Highly recommended!!
A Funfilled Journey through Rome.......2000-11-30
This was, in my opinion, one of the best Marcus Didius adventures. Marcus's relationship with his father adds great humor to an already wonderful story.
I don't think the reviewr below and I read the same book.......2000-10-23
Poseidon's Gold pits Falco against the forces that would defame the good name of his not-so-honorable brother Festus, his father and a band of art thieves trying to collect a questionably unpaid debt. This lacked some of the action that marks the earlier Falco novels which is why it only merited four stars, but it's still great fun. It's not entirely fare to compare Davis with Saylor - his writing is very different and while it is sophisticated it lacks the irony and humor of Davis' work. Read her when you want to smile and let's hope poor Falco gets a break in one of her future books.

Good puzzle is nicely paced although the end meanders........1997-11-10
A solid mystery with a good puzzle. Davis's greatest strength is her description of Rome and its daily life. However, the Sisyphean story of Falco and Helena not being able to get married is starting to pall. Memo to LD: time to pick up speed and move these two onto another level in their relationship.

Hohokam Bones.......2005-06-24
If you are in the mood for a mystical mystery, here's a new one that will keep you turning
pages. Hohokam Bones by Peter Spotswood Dillard carefully and cogently reveals the
story of Kokopelli, the snake-man and shape-shifter with the power to transform himself
into many things.
Archeologist Emily Harken had been curious about the Hohokam tribe since she was a
little girl. Indeed, this tribe, which disappeared from Arizona around 1450 AD, was a
major reason she followed in her father's footsteps and became an archeologist. Imagine
then her excitement when an intact Hohokam skeleton from about 850 AD was
uncovered. More, there was a hole at the base of its skull and a two inch arrowhead
inside. Murder!
Enter Kokopelli, the legendary supernatural snake-man who could turn himself into a
man, a hawk or anything else he wanted. With his help, Emily "...had a profound
experience of levelness: nothing in the landscape dominated anything else. They were all
with each other and with her. She felt the landscape stretching beyond the corners of her
vision into the earth that was both far away and nearby."
And so Emily and Kokopelli set out on an adventure of discovery. What they discover is
that the Hohokam's Solar Power had run out. But why? Was it because they rejected
Earth Sense for Sky Knowledge? How does Tlaloc, the rain devil of Camino del Diablo,
fit into the story?
Peter Spotswood Dillard has taken equal parts of metaphysical and Native American
spirituality and combined that with brilliant detective fiction and wondrous descriptive
prose describing the Sonoran Desert to give us an engaging novel you'll not want to put
down. In this reviewer's opinion, Hohokam Bones is a welcome addition to your night
table or reading chair, or wherever you enjoy escaping with a good book!

Book Description
Breakthrough genetic research indicates that genes are not just on/off switches for characteristics we can’t control (like gender or eye color). Some genes, including those that shape our bodies, actually adapt to outside influences. In
Turn Off the Fat Genes, Dr. Neal Barnard draws on this cutting-edge research to create a revolutionary new program to help your body sculpt away excess pounds by activating thin genes and suppressing fat ones. The heart of Dr. Barnard’s book is a three-week gene-control program specifically designed to help you identify your gene types by asking questions like:
What’s your genetic taste type?
Do you strongly dislike Brussels sprouts? Are some desserts too sweet to eat?
Is black coffee undrinkable?
If you answered yes to all three questions you’re a genetic bitter “taster” or
“supertaster” (as opposed to a “nontaster”). On page 24 you’ll find out how to work with your genetic taste type.
Is your appetite becoming harder to control?
Have diets made your appetite unpredictable? If so, your hunger-suppressing leptin gene might need a tune-up. (See page 59.)
Do you gain weight more easily than your friends?
Do you have difficulty losing weight no matter what you do? If so, the genes that set your metabolism might need a boost. (See page 71.)
Do you hate exercise?
If so, your genes may have overloaded you with sluggish Type II muscle cells. Learn how to change them on page 100.
Once we understand how the genes that control shape can be influenced, we can enjoy virtually the same effortless weight control as naturally thin people and reveal the healthy, vital body that nature intended us to have.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing new. Not for health knowledgeable readers.......2003-10-13
I picked up this book, thinking it had something new on healthy eating. Big error! Barnard presents nothing new. Eat whole grains, don't skip meals, eat several small meals, fruits, vegetables and the other lingo that any health conscious reader already knows.
I was expecting to read about how food xyz sparks gene abc and causes weight gain or loss. Instead, I got a lot of theory without intelligent analysis of the data.
His blasting of fat is a joke!! He postulates fat-free eating?! That I would say be careful, fat is good, it is just the type of fat. Cut down on the saturated. He even says no to Olive oil!! Now that totally put me off.
His write off on meats, chicken etc is another joke. Argentina main food is meat yet less than 2 in 10 people are overweight. Studies have shown that the bad rap for meat is misplaced and I agree. I think we should examine what we feed our meat. All that genetic modification is the culprit!
In all, save your money. Nothing new, trust me...unless your are a beginner, even then, be careful.
Think twice before wasting money on this book.......2003-07-04
Do not buy this book unless you believe all dairy, meats, and nuts are evil and should be banned! This man is an extreme vegan and for those who do not know what that is, it is a person that believes milk, eggs, nuts, fish, and meats will kill you. Feeding chicken to a child is the cause of obesity in America today! Even breastmilk is demonized. Now that I have that out of my system, the greastest disappointment with this book is the utter lack of theory and the studies to back it up. On virtually every page of all his books (yes, I have suffered through them) are wild opinions with no references whatsoever. For example, he states that in an uncontrolled study (or, in otherwords, unscientific) carbohydrates do not cause obesity but then just a few pages later states that carbohydrates may cause weight or fat gain. Now which is it? I was the most shocked on his recommendation that diets with no fats and just vegetables and grains provide enough fat. His idea of turning off the fat gene is not eating fat all together and if you eat enough vegetables and pasta you will no longer crave it. Oh please, if dieting were that easy we would all be thin. His idea of controling food cravings is stuffing yourself with pasta or cold cereal but please no butter or milk. He says that all nuts are bad because of the fat level but for those of you interested Cooking Light has reported a double-blind study of women eating nuts for a period of time and reported no weight gain. Nuts are also full of vitamins and antioxidants. I find difficulty in his continual statements that if a person does not agree with him and his medical cohorts they are confused and do not understand the greater knowledge. I wanted to find evidence that low-carbohydrate diets are bad and wanted legitimate data to back his assertions but the studies are just not there. So the bottom line is if you want a vegan life, go for it! You can look as gaunt and sickly as the author himself in just six weeks and be just as fanatical!
Amazingly Delicious Recipes!.......2003-06-19
It is not to be believed how wonderful these recipes are! It even got me to eat eggplant (which I hate!), but now I buy it almost every week just to make the delectable "Eggplant Manicotti" recipe. Other favorite recipes from this book include, "Potato Enchiladas", "Polenta Pizza" and "Lasagne Roll-Ups". All the recipes are simple to prepare and I haven't run across a single hard to find, strange or exotic ingredient I couldn't find at my neighborhood grocery store. I have tried several of these 100% vegan (strict vegetarian) recipe's and they have infused my daily meals with the flavor I never knew was missing.
This is now, officially my favorite cookbook.
To top it all off, every non-vegetarian who has tried the recipes I've made from this book have wanted the recipe for the dish afterwards.
I would also highly suggest you try, "Melody of India cuisine : tasteful new vegetarian recipes celebrating soy and tofu in traditional Indian foods" by Laxmi Jain, "The Uncheese Book", "Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure" and my second favorite vegetarian cookbook of all times, "How it all Vegan".
Lots of theory masking a simple concept.......2002-06-27
This could have been a much shorter book; on dozens of occasions, I found myself thinking, "Oh, come on; skip the theory, and let's cut to the chase! Enough obscure biochemistry already, just tell me what to eat, and we'll be all done!"
Well, OK; I'm impatient. And too much theory is always preferable to too little. The diet recommendations are basically the sound, healthy diet recommendations we've been getting for years: eat whole grains, more fruit, more vegetables, less fat, less sugar, and exercise more. The presentation is unique, in that Dr. Barnard suggests that this diet will somehow 'trick' our genes into making us slim. Well, this diet would make anyone slim, regardless of their genetic structure. Perhaps the book sheds light on why what happens, happens; but the actual recommendations are nothing new. I deducted one point for this reason alone; taking the same, tired old idea and putting a new wrapper on it doesn't make it a new idea. This book is not about do it yourself gene therapy, despite the sexy title; it's a vegetarian diet, and that's it.
One thing that I did like was the included meal planner; Similarly, I also appreciated the many, many recipes that make up the last half of the book. It's nice to start a diet with much of the hard work - the diet planning - already done for you. There's also a sourcing guide, if some of the raw materials prove hard to find. Something that is absent, is a discussion of vitamin and mineral supplements (although Dr. Barnard does mention the importance of B12). Multivitamins are a contentious issue; many feel that 'you can get all the nutrition you need with a knife and fork', while still others feel that concentrated multivitamins are not well absorbed, and tend to pass through the system without providing benefit. Personally, I believe high quality multivitamins are important; but aside from suggesting the consumption of any common, inexpensive multivitamin, Dr. Barnard makes no suggestions, one way or the other.
Dr. Barnard also does not mention alcohol consumption in his book; nor does he mention artificial sweetener use. However, on websites that he has participated in creating, he warns against alcohol consumption (cancer risk). I guess that, after making the major change to a vegetarian diet, Dr. Barnard felt we might need a drink. He might well be right.
The diet does not include specific portions; indeed, Dr. Barnard suggests that you let hunger be your guide. He does provide a 'rule of thumb' that you should consume 10 calories daily for each pound of your target weight; that is, if you want to wind up at 150 pounds, you should consume 1,500 calories daily. But this is only a guide, not an absolute. Indeed, he warns against eating too little, and suggests that we should eat second helpings if we want them. There's no reason to go hungry on this diet.
The diet is largely a subset of a vegetarian diet in nature, but Dr. Barnard does not present it as such; his presentation seems to be coming entirely from a 'whats best for you' approach, which winds up being essentially a vegetarian diet (minus high fat items, like nuts). The motivation seems to be based purely on health, not ethics. However, it is difficult to determine to what degree his health beliefs have been influenced by his moral stance; Dr. Barnard is a strong supporter of a strict vegetarian diet, which means no consumption of animal flesh or animal products such as eggs, milk, or butter. He is also an outspoken critic of using animals for medical testing purposes.
In reviewing the reviews of his earlier works, people tend to fall into three categories: Those who felt Dr. Barnard was trying to trick them into vegetarianism, and were very angry as a result; those who were confused, because the philosophy of this book runs counter to high protein/low carbo books, such as Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution; and those who had actually tried the diet, and experienced dramatic weight loss. It is worthwhile noting that, while there have been many criticisms of Dr. Barnard, there have been NO reviews in which someone actually followed the diet, and failed to lose weight. Say what you will of it; the diet does appear to deliver the goods, while providing good nutrition from a solid scientific base.
(Yes, it's vegetarian. Get over it.)
While I lack the medical background to either validate or challenge his statements, I can tell you that the actual recommendations are largely in keeping with what you've been getting from everyone from the National Institute of Health to your local physician. (By comparison, high protein/low carbohydrate diets are pretty much universally condemned by government health agencies, universities, local health boards, and both doctors and dietitians around the world.) Whole grain foods, less processed food, less fat, less salt, less sugar, more fruits and vegetables, more exercise... sure it'll work. It's even safe. If you're looking for a sensible, sane, balanced approach to weight loss that is both informative and supportive, you might want to check this book out.
After all, it's gotta be better than eating a hundred grapefruit.
Best Information I've Ever Read.......2002-03-20
This is by far the best book I have ever read as far as food for a healthy life. It makes complete sense out of so many myths we hear everyday about different kinds of diets. This is a program for good quality living. It has information on many experiments and testing that have been done and explains the complete metabolism issue in detail. If you are interested in nutrition at all this book is a must read!

great book.......2003-01-11
I have had this for a week and have already tried 3 of the recipes. Most of the recipes are very good, and they sound yummy. Great for vegetarians and I love the fact that they are nearly fat free! Very simple recipes and in an easy-to-use format.
Delicious and Easy!.......2000-07-03
What a find! For anyone looking for easy, tasty, low fat vegetarian recipes, this book is a "must have." Banana Dream Pie, Tofu Cheesecake, moist cornbread, zesty mushroom soup...all fabulous recipes that can be made in minutes. The majority of the ingredients used are available in regular grocery stores, which is helpful. I have 83 vegetarian cookbooks and this is one of my absolute favorites - because of its simplicity, consistently good recipes and because the recipes are fat free. By the way, it's vegan (no dairy, eggs, or any other animal products).

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and useful book with some limitations.......2001-08-18
While the book generally does an outstanding job of deftly balancing good resarch and an entertaining style, it stumbles badly when west of the Mississippi. What happened to (at the least) Winston, or Powell? Neither one is in the index, and I could not find them in the text. The eastern U.S. bias is quite clear.
A Real Treasure for any Fly Fisherman or Collector of Tackle.......2000-02-02
This is by far the best book that I have read and read and re-read on fly fishing tackle. The history of early bamboo fly rod makers is extraordinary, very informative and extremely interesting. If you are interested in fly fishing rods and reels, this book is well worth the price. This is a large book with lots of information on rods, reels, collecting, tackle manufacturing, tackle value, etc. etc. the list goes on. You won't be disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
A classic album.......2007-08-29
There are not a lot of albums I would buy, but this is one that I did. As far as I'm concerned this album rates among the all-time classic (pop?)rock albums. It's rates to be there along with other classic albums, such as the Beatles White album, or Neil Diamond's Hot August Night. What else can I say?
Good Transcriptions.......2003-07-29
Very good note for note transcriptions of the songs.
To the person who couldn't get boxer to match : The book says no capo required. This is misleading. The recording is tuned one step lower than standard tuning. So you need a capo at the -2 fret :) If you want to match the recording, you will have to retune. The publisher assumed most people wouldnt want to do that, so they just said no capo required.
Excellent for beginners........2001-08-02
This is an excellent book for beginners, I just got it and I'm already enjoying it. If you play the Acoustic guitar and you're not an expert that you can play songs and write notes only by listening to them - this book is for you. Bridge Over Troubled Water and Mrs. Robinson are only 2 of the great hits you'll find in this book. Here is the list of songs: America, Bookends, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Cecilia, El Condor Pass, For Emily, Whenever I Might Find Her, Homeward Bound, I Am A Rock, Kathy's Song, Mrs. Robinson, Scarborough Fair/Canticle, The Boxer
The 59th Street Bridge Street Song (Feelin' Groovy), The Sounds Of Silence. Enjoy!
Good for beginners but not perfect.......2000-02-13
Songs within are Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mrs. Robinson, the Sounds of Silence, The Boxer, The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy), Scarborough Fair - Canticle, I Am a Rock, Kathy's Song, Cecillia, America, Bookends, Homeward Bound, El Condor Pasa, For Emily Whenever I May Find Her.
There are words with each song. Songs match the CD with the same title and cover picture. Except I can't get the Boxer to match the one on the CD.
Doesn't have the usual note guide with it. I'm a beginner so this book is a stretch.

EXCELLENT = ACCURATE TRANSCRIPTION.......2007-08-06
Paul Simon's style can be difficult to get down on your own but this book and the accompanying CD are an EXCELLENT description of Paul Simon's solo classics. The accompanying CD allows you to hear how the guitar part SHOULD sound. Practicing the accurate tab will get you up to speed in no time. MOST highly recommended by a guitar player with 40 years experience.
a real insight in Paul Simon's playing.......2003-07-28
This book/cd combination is excellent!! What you get is a 44 page book with six of Simon's solo songs (50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, Kodachrome, Me and Julio, Peace Like a River, Something so Right, and Take Me to the Mardi Gras). The book includes both standard and tabbed notation. The transciptions are excellent and note perfect. The cd includes two performances of each song "karoake" style (backing tracks only). On the first performance all the instruments in the backing are included, and on the second the guitar has been removed so you can play along. My only complaint is that I wish the second performance had featured only the guitar so you could study the nuances more closely. That, however, is only a niggle and doesn't detract from this otherwise excellent study. Very highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
A Disappointment.......2004-05-13
One would assume that the reason most people buy Paul Simon music is because they like the music he plays as he plays it, not arrangements that merely borrow Simon melodies and lyrics, or at best, approximate his fingerpicking patterns. Alas, if you buy "Paul Simon Greatest Hits Songtab Edition" you're not going to get anything close to authentic transcriptions on most of the included songs. The arrangements in this book are often quite nice in and of themselves, but considered as transcriptions, most of them would rate from mediocre to poor. While this book might appeal to someone seeking simplified fingerstyle arrangements of Paul Simon songs, for the intermediate to advanced guitarist seeking genuine recorded-version transcriptions, this book can only be something of a disappointment.
