Book Description
With Naked Prey, John Sandford proved again that his writing is as fresh and compulsively readable as ever. "This is vintage Sandford, which is to say all but impossible to put down," said The Washington Post. "Sprawling, suspenseful, tough-minded [and] sheer fun."
Six months ago, Lucas Davenport tackled his first case as a statewide troubleshooter, and he thought that one was plenty strange enough. But that was before the Russian got killed. On the shore of Lake Superior, a man named Vladimir Orslov is found shot dead, three holes in his head and heart, and though nobody knows why, everybody-the local cops, the FBI, and the Russians themselves-has a theory. And when it turns out he had very high government connections, that's when it hits the fan.
A Russian cop flies in from Moscow, Davenport flies in from Minneapolis, law enforcement and press types swarm the crime scene-and, in the middle of it all, there is another murder. Is there a relationship between the two? What is the Russian cop hiding from Davenport? Is she-yes, it's a woman-a cop at all? Why was the man shot with . . . fifty-year-old bullets? Before he can find the answers, Davenport will have to follow a trail back to another place, another time, and battle the shadows he discovers there-shadows that turn out to be both very real and very deadly.

Another Great Book!.......2007-06-26
Another great book by John Sandford. The plot involves a Soviet spy ring withering on the vine at the end of the Cold War coming back to life to protect itself. Lucas Davenport with the help of a Russian intellignce operative, Major Nadezha Kalin (Nadya), takes us thru twists and turns as they slowly piece together the puzzle. One thing I liked about this book is that not every loose end is neatly tied up at the end resembling the true reality of crimes. Maybe they got 90%, but they still were pondering a couple of things. I liked it - a good read!
Sub-par Prey novel. Marginal at best........2007-03-06
Sandford diverged from his typical Prey novel here with Lucas Davenport following a Russian spy ring in Minnesota. I can understand why Sandford went this direction since once you write so many novels about the same character they might seem to be following a tired pattern. I have not had any complaints about the Prey novels so far, and this was the first one I have been truly disappointed in.
The storyline wasn't necessarily difficult to follow, it just did not feel right and it lacked that spy thriller edge that I believe Sandford was going for. I applaud the effort, but I wish Lucas Davenport would have been Lucas Davenport, up to his old tricks again. This book lacked what the previous ones had as Davenport skirts back and forth all over the country trying to figure out what this spy ring is all about.
If you are a Lucas Davenport fan then I recommend reading this book; however, don't be looking for what we as readers have come to expect with respect to Davenport's antics and escapades. All other readers, skip this book.
Sandford addiction.......2006-03-30
Read one of the Prey books, you'll want to read them all. Sandford is out generation's master of the crime novel.
-- Mark LaFlamme, author of "The Pink Room."
Good but not five stars worth!.......2006-03-19
a good read but somewhat slow compared to earlier efforts.
If it is John Sanford I love it!.......2006-03-10
The title says it all. Not great literature, but fun reads, I've read them all and am awaiting the next one.

An interesting spin on the murder mystery concept........2004-08-18
A fun little mystery, this novel is narrated by Mark Twain's secretary, Wentworth. While in New Orleans, Twain & Wentworth end up being asked to help solve a mystery, which is basically the meat of the book. The ending felt a tad rushed; the final "aha!" moment seemed to come out of nowhere to me, but all in all, this was an amusing mystery, and the use of Mark Twain as protagonist was rather clever.
A Connecticut Yankee in Criminal Court: A Mark Twain Mystery.......2000-02-24
Mr. Heck has a very good grip on the world of Mark Twain and New Orleans in this book. His discriptions of the wonderful foods on this City made me hungry the entire book. Mr. Heck weaves a very good mystery. He also understands the culture of the time and explains it very well. The author captures Mark Twain's humor in his characters, many times I laughed out loud. Mr. Heck's books are worth the read.
Mildly Diverting Twain Mystery.......1998-02-22
"A Connecticut Yankee in Criminal Court", as probably everyone knows by now, is the sophomore effort by writer Peter Heck. It follows his earlier successful Mark Twain mystery "Death on the Mississippi". This book showed a lot of promise from page one, with the introduction of George Washington Cable as a featured character. Heck did not spend a lot of time explaining who Cable was, a decision which pleased me. I knew immediately that Heck had done some homework on New Orleans history and I sat back, eagerly anticipating an interesting and sly mystery full of bold, well-written characters and inside jokes on New Orleans historical figures. What I got was something less than that. The story, a vague and meandering tail involving the poisoning death of a prominent white Orleanian and the black cook falsely accused of his murder, was indeed an entertaining one, but offered nothing new to the now-bursting ranks of the New Orleans mystery subgenre. Writers plotting mysteries set in the Crescent City now offer us one of three choices; murder against a Mardi Gras backdrop, old family intrigue or corrupt politicians. Sometimes, if they are especially clever, they will mix and match these story elements, but for the most part, they are simply not that clever. For me, the mysteries that work best are the ones that use New Orleans as a setting, but accept the fact that Orleanians have to make groceries, pick up the laundry, clean out their rain gutters and fight traffic like the rest of us. Some writers present a New Orleans whose residents do nothing but fling beads from Mardi Gras floats, run for office and go to fais do dos with their old Cajun families who have so many secrets they are fairly flowing from the closets. But I digress. As a favor to Cable, crotchety old Sam Clemens and his secretary, Wentworth Cabot, fresh off a murder investigation on a Mississippi riverboat, decides to find evidence to free the black cook. Along the way he meets Buddy Bolden, considered the father of modern jazz (although no recordings of his work exist), Marcus Keyes, Tom Anderson and "the widow Paris", whom you will recognize if you know anything about New Orleans history. If not, I'll keep the secret. It obviously vexed author Heck to no end that voodooienne Marie Laveau the second died in 1887 and was not available historically for this 1890's romp through the old quarter, because he felt the need to recreate her in the guise of Eulalie Echo, whom the characters spend the rest of the book self-consciously calling "`Lalie". Get it? `Lalie Echo = Marie Laveau. Jeez. The mystery seems to be going along nicely until... The mystery is solved Perry Mason-style, when `Lalie Echo calls all of the principle characters together at a voodoo ceremony and tells them that Damballah, the snake-spirit, knows one of them is guilty and will haunt their dreams unless the guilty party confesses. Then the guilty party confesses. Sheesh. Overall this book was fun, but not very challenging. A good read for a rainy day or a long bus trip, but don't make a point of rushing out to get it. Too romantically written.......2007-02-19
In an ideal world, we'd all have parents who we would want to help in old age, and it would be our honor to help them in their old age as they have helped us in our youth.
However, for the children of substance abuse parents and/or mentally ill patients the answers do not come easy. Things are much more complicated than simply finding a place to live, and deciding how much time you can spend with said loved one.
I'm not trying to over simplify, because all decisions dealing with older loved ones are difficult, but I was kind of hoping it would have given me more direction as to when its important to protect yourself as well. Its easy to get caught up in the caretaker role, feeling like a matyr without thinking about wheither or not this is the best desicion for you and your immediate family. Especially, if its puts you at risk for other health issues.
Beautiful and moving book.......2006-02-03
This is a beautiful book and I feel it is so wonderful for family caregivers who have just "gotten the call." It has so many personal insights and helpful tips, and I feel it gives a lot of strength and empowerment to caregivers. Please read this. You will be so glad that you did.
A highly compelling and poignant book for all of us........1999-10-21
Beth Witrogen McLeod's book Caregiving The Spiritual Journey of Love, Loss, and Renewal is a must read for any person taking care of an ill loved one, whether they are a child, spouse and/or aging parent. My interview with Beth revealed a strong woman with a fierce detrmination to help other caregivers make the most of a very painful situation. Beth includes her own personal journey along with the stories of hundreds of people she has met online in her chat groups or in person during her many public appearances in her incredible book. As the creator and editor of HotFlash! a woman's online perimenopause/menopause magazine and online support group, I have found women in the same place as Beth. She has described so well in her book the guilt, the pain, the sorrow and yes, at times, the joy of taking care of a sick loved one. In attempting to find hope and love in a truly difficult situation, Beth guides us to make good decisions not only for the person needing care but for the person herself. She pulls back the curtain on this often overlooked yet important topic.
This is a must read for anyone taking care of a loved one and for the rest of us who will one day be in these extraordinary shoes.
Fascinating.......1999-09-17
This is a fascinating book. I highly recommend it, although I was hoping it would have more concrete ideas for caring for an elder. I would recommend something like the Fourteen friends Guide to Eldercaring if you are looking for comcrete suggestions and a unique support group.
A beautiful, and inspiring book that has touched our hearts........1999-08-30
Beth has been there for all of us as the head of our "Caregiving" support group. Her experience and knowledge has helped us through, and her beautiful book has helped us know, why she is so caring of others. A must read for all CAREGIVERS.

A must read for all Roman Catholics.......2007-02-25
If you sit in your pew on Sunday and think, "Ugh, this is the worst...where did they come up with this stuff?" you will want to read this book.
In this well written volume, Mr. Wiltgen lifts the rock and lets the light shine on the factions responsible for twisting and redirecting the the Second Vatican Council away from it's original schemata.
Well indexed.
Valuable insights on Roman Catholic turning point........2006-08-02
Detailed analysis well worth the read no matter where your alliances may fall.
informative.......2005-12-16
A very good book explaining the liberlism of vatican II that has destroyed the reverence and mystery of catholicism and turned it into kumbayah, hand holding, p.c. garbage.
Review from the Publisher.......2001-03-09
This is an unparalleled eyewitness account of just what transpired at the Second Vatican Council. The author's integrity and objectivity won him exclusive interviews with a great number of the Cardinal and Bishops, whatever their allegiance within the Council. The title neatly sums up the fact that Vatican II, and the documents of Vatican II, were shaped largely by the liberal ideas of the Fathers from the Rhine lands. In The Rhine Flows into the Tiber, the strategies of the liberals in promoting their ideas come through on every page. Father Wiltgen's journalistic masterpiece shows clearly the two main theological forces that were at work in the church before the Council, during the Council, and after the Council, and which remain very much at work in the Church today. Here are the actions and actual words of the famous personalities of the Council, including Cardinals Ottaviani, Frings, and Suenens; Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre; Fathers Karl Rahner, Joseph Rarringer, and Hans Kung - and of course, Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI. This book is essential for anyone who would understand the new orientations which came to the fore with Vatican Council II - including the famous "Spirit of Vatican II" orientations which have led to momentous destruction and unprecedented changes in the entire Roman Catholic Church. Important reading! 304pp. PB. Imprimatur.

Illustrated history of Buckingham Palace.
Customer Reviews:
Buckingham Palace, a review.......2007-10-10
I found the book to be very informative, good selection of pictures. It was interesting to compare the different rooms as they were changed from Queen Victoria through Queen Elizabeth. It lacks pictures and descriptions of the rooms in the new wing of the palace, the one facing the Victoria Monument. I do recommend this book, though, I wish it had more pictures of other rooms.
BUCKINGHAM PALACE.......2006-10-20
A nice book on one of the most recognizable if not prettiest palace in the world. The text is highly informative and the images are well presented. Buckingham Palace's exterior style is not exactly aweinspiring, it looks like a government building, like the treasury or department of state, it's really the interiors that make this place special. It's a high Georgian tour de force, the interiors are quite simply spectacular; they are elegant and have elan. If you have any interest in the Windsor's or love Georgian style then i highly recommend this book, if you have never seen the interior of this building, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Excellent Business Resource.......2004-01-20
I come from an art background, and I'm always a little worried about becoming the proverbial, "starving artist". This book provided me with a wealth of knowledge to get started on the right foot. I'm writing up my first year's business plan, creating a portfolio, and will begin marketing soon. This book is an excellent resource for anyone getting started.
An Essential "Business Tool" to own!.......2003-12-29
This was a Christmas gift to my son, our family handyman who loves to dabble in wordworking. Family and friends have encouraged him to quit his job as an Engineer and do this full-time. He has accumulated an impressive collection of carpentry tools and books on "How to build....." (You name it and he has a book on how to build it.) Of all his books, this is the only one that provided him with a thorough insight of the business aspect of woodworking. He said this book is the only one that gave him the proper "business tools" to decide whether or not to make a career change. He hasn't made a career change yet, but reading this book has helped him understand the industry a lot better and what he will have to do to turn his hobby into a viable business to support his family.
Perfect source to learn all aspects of going professional........1999-03-31
I found this book very informative with many professional examples. It gave me an insight into all the necessary steps to start my own woodworking business. Well worth the money!

Catch yourself draw beautiful portraits of famous people!.......2003-06-01
The author is the best drawing teacher you never had. Thanks to his books, particularly this one, I really surprised myself drawing things I never thought I could. Buy this book and catch yourself drawing an excellent portrait of Chaplin, Einstein, Shakespeare. It is a uniquely satisfying experience.
People always say they can't draw faces. Faces are too complex to draw. Well now you can. Get the book and impress yourself and friends.
What a book.......2001-07-12
I started off drawing faces from a book that shows all these circles, then all of the sudden have a great looking face. I was extremely annoyed until I stumbled upon this book. It has amazing steps that lets you draw great looking faces in a short period of time. I now have drawn Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Humphrey Bogart, Charlie Chaplin and LOTS more to come.
A really good book.......1999-01-30
This is a really good book. It has a lot of historical figures as well as current people to draw. The only drawback is that it was first published a while back, so pictures like Barbra Streisand and Bill Cosby are kind of outdated.

Book Description
One of the most inspiring stories in wrestling history, Cheating Death, Stealing Life sees Eddie Guerrero recount his saga in remarkably candid fashion, chronicling a life of heartbreaks and painful personal struggles in frank, graphic detail.
Guerrero was born into Mexico's first family of sports entertainment, and his life story spans three generations of the wrestling business. His father, Gory Guerrero, was among the greatest legends of lucha libre -- Mexican wrestling. Before Eddie was twenty, he was competing in the border town of Juarez, going on to work throughout Mexico. The family name made him an instant sensation but also cast a large shadow from which he would spend years trying to emerge. Paired with the late Art Barr, Guerrero cofounded what became the most hated -- and popular -- tag team in lucha libre, the infamous Los Gringos Locos.
Word spread, and soon Guerrero was blowing away fans in North America as part of the upstart Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion. Eddie's phenomenal matches with Dean Malenko rank among the most exciting bouts of all time.
World Championship Wrestling was looking for innovative new talents to help them compete against their rival, World Wrestling Federation, and Guerrero's unique style fit the bill. Unfortunately, the backstage politics that dominated WCW kept Guerrero away from the main-event spotlight. Eddie sought solace from the pressures of life on the road by living hard and partying harder. Even a series of drug overdoses and a near-fatal car accident could not change his ways.
As WCW collapsed, Guerrero knew it was time to move on. When a group of wrestlers -- including his close associates Chris Benoit and Malenko -- opted to leave, Guerrero joined them and soon signed with World Wrestling Federation.
Now that Guerrero was finally given a chance to shine, things began looking up. Unfortunately, a freak injury in his debut match took him out of the ring action before he could even get started. Upon his return, Eddie was paired with The Ninth Wonder of the World, Chyna, which launched his indelible Latino Heat character. Though his career was flourishing, his personal demons continued to torment him. Years of the wrestling lifestyle, of nightly partying and frequent injury, led to addictions to both alcohol and painkillers, habits that would nearly cost him everything he held dear.
Guerrero spent four months in a rehabilitation facility, cleansing his body and soul. Sadly, he had not yet hit bottom. A relapse into alcohol abuse resulted in a DUI conviction and the loss of his job. Though Guerrero had lost everything -- his family, his money, his job -- he never allowed himself to lose his pride. He stopped drinking and began training harder than ever before. He returned to the independent circuit, where he regained his reputation as one of wrestling's most electrifying performers.
With an open heart and a powerful determination, Guerrero searched deep within himself and fought to regain the life he had lost. Above all, his journey of self-discovery reawakened his relationship with Jesus Christ, and he found peace and strength in the Bible.
Before long, World Wrestling Entertainment offered Guerrero a second chance, and he seized it. From the moment of his return, it was clear he was instilled with a new focus and passion. With his nephew, Chavo Guerrero Jr., Eddie made up one half of the wildly successful Los Guerreros tag team. The pair became one of WWE's hottest attractions via a series of hilarious vignettes that allowed Guerrero's comic gifts to shine and that celebrated his Chicano heritage. Meanwhile, he continued to cement his well-deserved reputation for intensity and creativity in the ring.
Ultimately, Guerrero not only regained his life, he surpassed his wildest dreams. Despite all the obstacles strewn in his path, Guerrero triumphed, becoming WWE Champion.
Cheating Death, Stealing Life offers a no-holds-barred glimpse behind the curtain into the secret world of wrestling, from the harsh realities of a lifetime spent in hotels and rental cars, to the politics that permeate the dressing room. Of course, tight-knit friendships are also forged. Guerrero tells of his personal bonds with such Superstars as Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko.
It's also the story of Guerrero's private struggle, of a son caught in the shadow of a larger-than-life father and three older brothers, of a marriage that reached the brink of disintegration before being reborn as a more powerful and fulfilling relationship. Throughout, Eddie Guerrero pulls no punches describing his battles with self-doubt and inner darkness. In the end, Cheating Death, Stealing Life is a story of great courage and personal redemption, of Guerrero's bravery in facing his disease and fighting to become a better man in every light.

Great book! Sad, but very memorable.......2007-03-09
I just re-read this book. I absolutely loved it and put it up there with the best wrestling books out there. You feel connected to Eddie just like you did when you saw him on tv or dvd or in person. His charisma showed through the ups and downs of this book.
I was left wondering what caused a lot of his demons though. He didn't fully explain the things that haunted him. Like his problems with his wife Vickie, he didn't really go into detail which left me wondering what she did wrong. Cheating? Their fights? Also I got the feeling there was more to his demons than he let on. It just left me curious. I'd like to see a book written by Vickie that might shed some light on things left unanswered in this book.
Eddie was honest. Brutally honest. He didn't back off from saying who he liked and disliked. He was very upfront about his drinking, drugs (though never mentioned steriods whether he used or didn't use them), and his problems. He never acted like a saint, but obviously wanted to be a good person. Thankfully he beat the addictions and enjoyed some time with his loved ones before he passed on tragically.
This book brought me to tears even in the second reading. It made me realize that life is a fragile thing and we got to respect and love people and show it while we can. Given Eddie's many brushes with death he was fortunate to be sober and drug-free for 4 years before his untimely death. Unfortunately, he paid the price for his past mistakes, but he got to patch things up with his wife and daughters, and reach new heights with his fans and ultimately becoming the World Champ!
Highest recommendation possible,(right up there with Mick Foley's Have A Nice Day!) buy this book and quit reading this review!

Eddie's My Hero!.......2006-11-08
Wrestling has always been a guilty pleasure for me. I grew up watching the likes of Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and the Bruiser with my dad. Now I watch with my son. There's nothing I enjoy more than watching grown men make complete fools of themselves. I like the pranksters best--guys like DegenerationX (Triple H and Shawn Michaels), John Cena and, of course, Eddie Guerrero. He brought a lot of laughter into our living room every week. But more than that, Eddie was--and is--an inspiration. He had a lot to overcome, and he did--and this tough guy wasn't afraid to proudly proclaim his faith in God and Jesus Christ. He gave credit where it was due, always. Viva la Raza, Eddie! You still live in Heaven--and through those of us who love and respect you!
Lying to Vickie, Cheating Death, Stealing Life!.......2006-08-03
Now that I got your attention... I just finished the book minutes ago, and it was very inspirational to say the least.
Now at first, I was hesitant getting his book, even after he passed away. I had the impression that the book will be mostly somber, due to his infamous demons, but I gave it a shot and bought it anyway, still expecting a better book from Edge. But after reading it, I can say that this is way better(not saying that Edge's book is not good, its still great). Yes, it is somber in some ways, but its also inspirational, fun, and got some very funny parts! Funnier than Edge's book I dare say.
His life is a good example of overcoming hardships in life, and even though his past still sucker punched him in the end, with this book along with his popularity as a wrestler, still won the day for him. What he wants is to set as an example, and though this isnt what all of us expected, in some strange ways, it did the job.
Aside from that, this book talks about his family, which even to someone like me who dislikes reading that side of an autobiography, finds it entertaining. From his tough dad; to his problems with his brothers; down to his beloved Vicky. Wrestling is all throughout this book, its his life from birth to the end. The book tells his time in Mexico, Japan, then to US with ECW, WCW, and finally WWE.
If there is a fault I can say about this book, its how it summarizes certain events first, then without warning goes back to the start of those events and tell it one by one, which in a way confused me a little... It made me think, "hey didnt he say he did it before? Why say this is the first time?... Oh"... Again, nothing serious.
I suggest you get this book now if youre a fan of wrestling, and know of Eddie(whether you like him or not)! Eddie, you should be proud, even if things didnt work out how you wanted it to be(how we want it to be), you still inspired and touched us all!
