Think First - Write Later.......2003-05-16

Power Writing is practical, good advice, for real business people.

The all too often overlooked element of writing (ie planning and setting objectives) is covered here in detail which is useful if you want to get the desired outcome from your communication.

As a copywriter, I found myself nodding to a lot of the things in here. I'd recommend this mainly to business people who are looking to do things like a professional, but there's still plenty in here to help you improve if you already are one.

Making us think harder and write better.......2003-04-26

I have to write a lot in my business - everything from press releases, speeches, company biographies and sales brochures, through to presentations and marketing reports. Most of my efforts are spent on making it "sound" good and I never really gave any thought to the next step down the line - making it "work". I think it's because we all get set in our ways, and the day-to-day problems we are constantly facing leave little time to step back from what we are doing, and try to gauge how the words we produce will be absorbed or understood by the customer.

In that respect I found the book's advice both sensible and pragmatic. For example, the need to explain - really explain - what you are saying, and not make the assumption that the reader is telepathic and understands/agrees with points you feel are self-explanatory. Once you've got the hang of it all feels so obvious.

Indeed, some of the advice given in the book is obvious. But the advantage of Powerwriting is that it shows you how to apply what may be obvious on to a real situation, like writing a CV, a company brochure or copy for a video. And that's where the book's strength lies - it's full of what ought to be obvious to anyone in business, but most of us never take a deep breath, stand back and see how and why we need to apply it to the everyday problems any businessman faces.

"Powerwriting" is the first book I've ever read which helps me understand the simple "rules" of making a message really work and not just add to the pile of wasted words passing across the recipient's desk. It's easy to use as a reference and I strongly recommend it to anyone who want to make what they write work more efficiently.

I read this book for a graduate course in medieval history.
Charles Oman's great book "The Art of War in the Middle Ages" is a great introductory work for warfare of the period. It is especially useful for battle descriptions of English wars against the Scottish, and for the Hundred Years War. Oman writes that the lesson of the Battle of Falkirk in 1298, was clear for any competent military commander to follow; cavalry alone could not defeat the Scottish squares, but archers supported by cavalry could easily break them. These tactics would be successfully repeated by Edward III against the Scots at Hallidon Hill in 1333, and Neville's Cross in 1346, not to mention in his invasion of France

Edward I's most important contribution to advancing the war fighting capability of Britain was in the battlefield tactics that he employed. It cannot be stressed enough that his use of mixed cavalry and archery was a monumental leap in battlefield tactics, as well as the precursor in making the longbow a force multiplier during the Hundred Years' War. The military record of Edward II, who reigned from 1307-1327, was abysmal. Charles Oman spoke on behalf of all historians who wrote about Edward II's lack of military prowess, and was justifiably unflattering in his critique of Edward II's military acumen. Most of what Edward I won on the battlefields in Scotland, Edward II ineptly lost.

Edward III's strategic and tactical abilities were on full display during the Hundred Years' War. One of the most important tactical innovations that Edward III instituted to increase the fighting capability of the English army before the start of the Hundred Years' War was the introduction of mounted archers to its ranks. Oman took notice of the importance of Edward III's tactical innovation. Mounted archers rode ponies for quick transport to the battlefield, and then they would dismount to shoot their longbows in battle. Undoubtedly, Edward III learned from the previous one hundred years of his predecessors' fighting the Scottish, that too many times the Scots outmaneuvered the English; thus, they escaped from having to fight a battle advantageous to the English. Edward III was going to do all he could to make sure that this did not happen to his army. Oman's research shows muster records from 1334 listing mounted archers for the first time as part of Edward III's expedition into Scotland. This was Edward III's second largest campaign against an enemy during his reign. The expedition served as an excellent opportunity for Edward III and his army to prove their new tactics, which they would put to good use a dozen years later in France.

Recommended reading for those interested in medieval history, and military history.

A historical document in its own right.......2004-01-24

The Art of War in the Middle Ages was first published in 1885 in Oxford and London. A revised edition was re-published in 1953, with indicators of revisions included in the text. This particular portion is true to the original, using particular terminology. It is part of the section that deals with the "arms, organization and tactics of the Byzantine armies". The 19th century scientist uses the term "Macedonians" as a synonum for "semi-Romanized Slavs" of the early Middle Ages, a proof against the claims of anti-Macedonian propagandists who attempt to portray the Macedonian people as a recent "invention." A quote:

"It would appear that Maurice had intended to break down the barrier which has been imposed in the fourth century between the class which paid the taxes and that which recruited the national army. "We wish," he writes, "that every young Roman of free condition should learn to use the bow, and should be constantly provided with that weapon and with two javelins." If, however, this was intended to be the first step toward the introduction of universal military service, the design was never carried any further. Three hudnred years later Leo is found echoing the same words, as a pious wish rather than as a practical expedient. The rank and file, however, of the imperial forces were now raised almost entirely within the realm, and well-nigh every nation contained in its limits, except the Greeks, furnished a considerable number of soldiers. The Armenians and Isaurians in Asia and the Thracians and Macedonians--or more properly the semi-Romanized Slavs--in Europe were considered the best material by the recruiting officer."

The whole book is enjoyable and provides intelligeble analysis of military matters. The "100 year war" part is especially memorable and well laid-out.

immensely readable.......2001-07-31

This is an excellent and fascinating work. I highly recomend it for anyone interested in warfare, the middle ages, or both. It is full of well-researched insights and synthesizes and provides a broad general framework for understanding warfare in this period. Serious scholars or those seeking to use this as a textbook should note that the original version that forms the basis of this book was written a century ago and is probably outdated, despite the rewritten portions. However, the greatest strength of this book is that it is extraordinarily well-written, and a pleasure to read.

Well written and interesting, but very outdated. You're better off with Keen's new _Medieval Warfare_ or Verbruggen or R.C. Smail (Crusading Warfare) or France's new book.

This book is more for entertainment than practical use. On a trip to France in December 2006, I stayed at several bed & breakfasts.

I had much better luck going directly on the internet to find information and descriptions of available properties.

The Pharaohs: Master-Builders.......2004-04-10

A reader might expect from its title that this book would be a history of Pharaonic architecture. Really, though, it is more of a standard history of Egypt that is illustrated with photographs and descriptions of the usual variety - pyramids, Sphinx, temples, tombs. Both the history and the photographs are competently done, but there isn't much here that is new, or that hasn't been covered as well or better in other surveys.

For me, the best part of the book is its generous selection of 19th century copies, of ancient tomb paintings, by the likes of Rosellini, Champollion, and Belzoni. This is a great idea! The copies were made when the ancient paintings were still fresh, vivid, and undamaged. The meticulous copies give us an impression of how lively and vivid the originals must once have been, before their current and unfortunate exposure to moisture, air, and tourists.

The book contains some quite annoying errors. For example, on p. 115, a painting of Isis in Horemheb's tomb is misidentified as Hathor, in spite of her speech formula that reads, "words spoken by Isis!" On page 118, the same goddess is misidentified as Nut. On p. 80, Amun is characterized as a "sun god." On p. 148, the name of Ramesses II is both transliterated and translated incorrectly.

In spite of these problems, I wound up keeping the book for its selection of tomb scenes. The publisher also deserves credit, for bringing out such a well-produced and well-illustrated book at a very reasonable price.

Best moderately priced plant/garden problem solver book on the market .......2007-08-07

I searched a long long time for a decent, yet reasonably priced problem solving book for plants/gardens. This book had the answers I was looking for; it really is three books in one. There is a section for basic plant maintanence and prevention, problems by plant types (blueberry, apples, roses, exc.), a flow sheet that shows what symptoms will manifest if (leaves, roots, bark, exc.) are being attacked by an invader, and an in depth section on damaging and beneficial creatures (with color photos). This book gives you everything you need to get started and problem solve your plant or garden. A solid book, and a good investment.

This is a must-have book for any gardener or anyone who has the luxury of a gardener, second only to the Sunset Western Garden Book. It is superb at describing and illustrating problems and instructs you on what can be done, if anything. For example, it told us that the sudsy-looking substance on plants was relatively harmless and there is nothing much we can do about it. That put our minds at ease so we can move on to tackle other, more pressing problems. Sunset rules when it comes to their gardening books and their magazine!

Another indespensable book for the western gardener........1998-12-18

This is the best book I've seen on identifying problems in your garden. Clear color pictures make identifying diseases, weeds, insects and other pests easy and it tells you the most benign way to rid your garden of the problem. Insects good for the garden are shown as well, so you know what to kill and what to keep. Several chapters cover how to prevent problems from occuring in the first place. A heavy emphasis on evironmental gardening.
