Book Description
The first novel to articulate the rage and pain of life in "the other America," Last Exit to Brooklyn is a classic of postwar American writing. Selby's searing portrait of the powerless, the homeless, the dispossessed, is a fiercely and frighteningly apposite today as when it was first published twenty-five years ago.
Customer Reviews:
Entered another time in a place close to home.......2007-06-24
I had always heard people speak of Selby's, "Last Exit to Brooklyn", yet it was not until recently that I picked it up. This novel takes you to another time, although not another world. The places Selby speaks of are real and the people could be the guy next to you on the subway. Perhaps it is the language used that makes this novel have the ability to transform the world around you. You are taken into the everyday lives of working-class individuals, and are shown a side of people that most of us will never see. A side that people like to keep hidden to themselves, for if anyone knew what they were really like, the consequences could be fatal. It makes you wonder what you do alone, that would scare others. What you hide as a human being, from all the rest of us...
Hubert Selby is Bukowski with talent..........2007-05-13
Selby is a talented fiction writer. Even in the lackluster stuff, that talent shines through. Unfortunately, the lackluster stuff is the majority of the book, viz., "The Strike", "The Queen is Dead", "Another Day, Another Dollar", and "And Baby Makes Three." There is one good story--actually a series of interweaving character vignettes--called "Landsend", and one story that I'll probably never forget: "Tralala." The latter is remarkable: Selby creates a completely unsympathetic character, who suffers the apotheosis of human degradation...and becomes sympathetic in a transcendent way. There is no volte-face, there is no redemption, but there is the underlying humanity--good, bad, evil, whatever--that is undeserving of such a fate.
I recommend the book on the basis of this one story--only about twenty pages. Skip the rest and you won't be missing much--a lot of faggotry and proletarian filler.
the second-best Selby.......2007-03-17
Hubert Selby wrote what many readers consider to
be some of the most lyrical prose in twentieth
century America. More coherent than Burroughs,
he sweeps the reader along in a stream of the
urban colloquial language of the 1950's.
He is also a far more pessimistic writer than
Burroughs. His characters spin in a tight downward
spiral to their own destruction. Considerations
of empathy with the characters are beside the
point-the relentless urge to self-destruction
is the center of all these stories.
This combination of a single theme and beautiful
writing could make for a book that's hard to
put down. In fact, the effect is often the opposite.
The constant ugliness makes it hard for a reader
to see a bit of herself in these characters and
in spite of the beauty, the ultimate feeling is
one of repulsion.
It's easy to see why this book attracted so much
attention when first published and it's worth readng
today as a milestone. But to get a better sense of
Selby's power, Requiem for a Dream is the book to read.

the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.ISBN

A New Dawn.......2007-03-07
When the book first came out, it was a new dawn for literature, a new dawn for writing in general, and it's a sad time today to know that no one is releasing novels like this before. I don't think this is the greatest book in America, nor is it even the greatest book the Hubert Selby Jr. would go on to write. That would be Requiem For A Dream. I'm saying that this novel was taboo, Transgressional fiction, brilliantly portraying the weirdness, the violence, the sickness that always plagued society. It's not exactly timeless, but it does have it's moments.
A Great American Classic.......2007-01-21
If you're looking for a novel that adheres to the book club check list that so many people rely on these days to gauge the value of a novel--"does it have likeable sympathetic characters that I can care about?" "is there a well constructed plot line?" "is there strong, plausible character development?" etc, --this is probably not the book for you. In Last Exit to Brooklyn Selby purposefully transgressed mainstream writing conventions to create one of the most unique and powerful visions of American life in the history of American literature.
Selby comes out of the tradition of the American Naturalist/Realist school of writers like Upton Sinclair and Stephen Crane who wrote about the marginalized and disenfranchised and depicted their world not as it should have been but as it was. The characters here are not pretty nor is the world in which they live, which is marked by mechanical sex, violence, pervasive ignorance, callousness, complete lack of spirituality and a survival of the fittest mentality. This is the ugly flip side of the American Dream and only those who don't read the newspaper could say that this book is outdated and irrelevant.
Yes, the narrative is episodic and there is no overarching plot line that ties it all together. A lot like real life, no? There is a sense of chaos, randomness and unpredictability although all the characters are limited by their own narrow consciousness and circumstances as well as the stultifying environment in which they live. Most are emotional cripples who express any sort of tender impulse in the only way they know how-- through crude sex or violence or anger. Accordingly, there is little sentimentality here and the little there is usually marks the character in its grip as doomed.
Selby didn't write this book to measure up to conventional standards of what a novel should be in terms of form. In much great art, form follows function and that's the case here. The fact that he doesn't develop an engaging, easy to read plotline or punctuate his sentences is about as meaningful a criticism as saying that the cover of the book isn't a nice colour. Great artists always break rules in their attempts to find the best way to narrate their vision and Selby is a great artist. Read this book on its own terms because it's one of those rare books that created its own standards. Having said that, this book does what great writing always does: shows us some aspect of the human condition in a light that is as harsh and difficult to face as it is illuminating and truthful.

Book Description
Exit an ambitious actor...
The script of the Unicorn Theatre's new play uncannily echoes a quarrel in the star's dressing room. And the stage drama gets all too real when charming Felix Gardener shoots his blustering rival, Arthur Surbonardier, dead-with a gun Arthur himself loaded with blanks. or did he? How the live bullets got there, and why, make for a convoluted case that pits Inspector Roderick Alleyn against someone who rates an Oscar for a murderously clever performance.

Melodrama becomes murder when live ammunition is substituted at the end of a play.......2005-12-27
First Murderer appears at the door
- stage direction from Macbeth, Act III, scene iv
ENTER A MURDERER, the second Alleyn book, is told in a style introduced in A MAN LAY DEAD but gradually abandoned over the course of the series - rather than alternating between the views of various principals in the case and members of the police team, it relies heavily on Nigel Bathgate, a personal friend of Alleyn's who is fascinated by investigation as long as it doesn't interfere with his personal loyalties. Bathgate is the vehicle for Alleyn's involvement in this case, in a tidy bit of business simultaneously illustrating both Bathgate's personal entanglements with the case and drawing Alleyn into it: having acquired two free tickets to a performance of "The Rat and the Beaver" while his girlfriend is away, Bathgate invites Alleyn, only to witness the murder of one of the actors when live ammunition is introduced to the final dramatic confrontation.
Unfortunately for Bathgate's amateur sleuthing, Felix Gardener, the friend who gave him the tickets, is the actor who pulled the trigger, so Bathgate's personal concerns over his friend's involvement lead him to nose into the investigation far more than his professional desire for a scoop. Bathgate, in fact, generally seems unprofessional in this story, as he allows Alleyn to censor his stories before publication and seems very leisurely in getting his copy turned in; his status with his paper is rather vague, since he jumps about from writing theatre reviews to covering a crime reporter's proper beat. Alleyn's permissive attitude toward bringing Bathgate along when he frankly has no business being involved doesn't ring true, and Alleyn's perennial involvement with the bread-and-butter work of the forensic specialists seems unnecessary - while he apparently respects the other members of his team, he doesn't seem content to let them do their jobs.
As for the victim, the police are spoiled for choice as to motive; Arthur Surbonadier (born Arthur Simes) was a good actor to whom the other two leads owed their start in the profession thanks to his connection with theatre magnate Jacob Saint (born Jacob Simes), but Surbonadier dabbled far too much in drink, amateur blackmail, and sexual harassment to leave a good impression on anyone, from the property master whose girl he'd interfered with to his fellow players, who resented what they saw as his use of personal pull to get better parts than he deserved.
I recommend the audio edition narrated by James Saxon - while it omits the foreword, which isn't necessary to the story (it's a mildly funny exchange between Alleyn and the author), it's well played. Like most of Marsh's stories, ENTER A MURDERER works best when performed. It's somewhat melodramatic - Bathgate's extensive appearances as viewpoint character and his personal involvement contribute heavily to that impression - and mostly of interest to readers who are pursuing the Alleyn stories as a whole. Marsh's later stories are better executed.
Drive-in totals:
- Two deaths (shooting, hanging).
- Multiple instances of blackmail, mixed up with criminal libel.
- Multiple love interests, among them the attactions the leading lady holds for Alleyn - Stephanie Vaughan [sic], who was involved to some degree with both Surbonadier and Gardener.
- Drugs (both involvement in pushing and in drug-taking), though drinking more than drugs affects the characters' visible behaviour.
Superb narration brings this great mystery novel to life!.......2001-04-05
Nagaio Marsh's Enter A Murderer appears unabridged, with James Saxon narrating the story of a theater murder and an actor. It's up to Inspector Roderick Alleyn to sort out whodunit. The narration brings the story to life, with all its strengths.
Good, but the plot is a bit similar to Death at the Bar.......2000-06-12
While I enjoyed _Enter a Murderer_, I found the plot a bit similar to _Death at the Bar_. If I hadn't first read _Death at the Bar_ this wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, as both plots are rather clever - it's just unfortunate that they're clever in the same way. I also didn't like Inspector Alleyn as much in this book - granted he was investigating a murder that takes place amongst theatrical people, but still, he came off as a bit overdone at times. At any rate, _Enter a Murderer_ was quite entertaining - Marsh definitely starts to plumb the depths in terms of a murderer's psychology, and the whole set up, with the murder taking place on stage in full-view of an audience (talk about witnesses!) was a really neat idea.

A little blackmail, anyone?.......2004-09-06
Antony Maitland is deeply involved in a case. He's looking forward to a little rest when he gets home. What he gets instead is a visit from good friend, Meg Hamilton. Meg is an actress by profession, but her visit is strictly personal--the man she wants to marry is about to be charged with murder, and she wants Antony to Do Something.
Roger Farrell is the man, and his story is simple enough. His mother was being blackmailed, and rather than ask for help, she killed herself. The police think that Roger has tracked down the blackmailer and killed him. Roger says the man was already dead. Antony is not sure who to believe, but he knows he's got to help Meg. What he doesn't know is that he will wind up in danger himself.
A really exciting story with good characters. Not widely available, but worth reading.

Book Description
Hysterectomy is performed more than any other surgical procedure for women, with the exception of the cesarean section. Authors Adelaide Haas and Susan L. Puretz, both professors in the field of health, have experienced hysterectomy firsthand. Dismayed by the limited information available to them, they collaborated on this comprehensive book about a critically important subject for women. THE WOMAN'S GUIDE TO HYSTERECTOMY addresses common fears, expectations, and questions regarding such issues as what to ask your doctor, second opinions, preparations for surgery, sex and sexuality after surgery, and life after hysterectomy. Encouraging all women to become more actively involved in their own healthcare, this book is a practical catalog of the latest medical information and provides much-needed reassurance for women faced with this life-altering decision.
Customer Reviews:
worthwhile.......2007-08-25
Even though I'm in the medical profession, there is still much to be learned. This was helpful to know what to ask and what to consider trying before necessary surgery!
Not as good as others on the subject.......2007-06-23
This book seemed outdated and doom and gloom. I didn't care for how it was written, or how it made me feel like my sex life was over, my soft skin was over, and I would shrivel up and age quicker because I was having a hysterectomy. What a crock! The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy
by Lauren F. Streicher is a MUCH better book. Save your money and buy that one instead!
This book was my pre-surgery bible.......2006-03-31
I bought this book a week before my hysterectomy and it was SO helpful in thoroughly preparing me for what to expect before and after surgery, down to the smallest details. Although I had made my decision, the chapter on treatment options reassured me that I had covered all my options. The "post-op diet" (to promote nutrition while combating gas and constipation, two prevalent post-surgery issues) was also really helpful. I recommended this book, and The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy, to my gynecologist and plan to share it with friends who find themselves needing such a resource. This book is slightly drier than Essential Guide but still readable and very informative.
A good attempt, but misses medically.......2004-12-06
This is a good attempt to explain the medical aspects of hysterectomy, but is clearly written by non-physicians who don't quite understand many medical aspects of the procedure. Some of the information is confusing, some is out dated, and some is just wrong. As a gynecologist, I routinely read what's out there. This is not a book I would recommend to my patients. Books that are more medically accurate are Wallach's book ( boring) and Streicher's book(very engaging).
Great book!.......2003-09-20
Out of the 3 books I bought on this subject, this one was the most informative and useful. It's a BIG book, with easy to read and understand chapters from pre-op to post-op and more! My doctor was suprised I was so informed at my pre-op appt., and I felt so much better knowing all the details he didn't have time to discuss with me. If you are having the operation, get this book, you'll be glad you did!

Book Description
Lavishly illustrated and extensively researched, this fascinating book chronicles the widening accessibility of jewelry between 1860 and 1960. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, only the affluent could afford many pieces of jewelry. In the mid-nineteenth century, however, industrialization led jewelry to become more affordable and the rising middle class created a larger market. Increasingly, jewelry was made not only from traditional precious metals and stones, but also of materials such as gold-plated base metals, vulcanite, hair, plastics, aluminum, and much more. Beginning with a visual timeline, this comprehensive volume couples an informative text with outstanding photographs of over 1,000 pieces of fine and costume jewelry made in America, Europe, and Asia. The jewelry reflects the changing styles of each decade, ranging from romantic to humorous to sumptuous. Pieces are organized by type of material or in delightful themes, such as heart-shaped items, insects, Egyptian influenced, and more. A helpful glossary, extensive bibliography, tips for collectors, and current values are all included. This book is certain to inspire and delight beginning and advanced jewelry collectors, historians, and designers.

Book Description
The first of three volumes of the drawings by the Italian architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger (1484-1546) and his circle brings to light the archive of one of the most productive architectural teams in early modem Europe. These drawings (some 1,200 in all) reveal more about the planning process in this extraordinary period of architectural invention than any other source. Moreover, they demonstrate the full range of interests of the Sangallo circle, from machinery and construction technology to the ruins of ancient Rome.
Antonio da Sangallo the Younger is a key figure in the history of Italian sixteenth-century architecture. Active on the major building sites of his day, he and his workshop were involved in major church projects (St. Peter's, Rome), palaces (Palzzazo Farnese Rome), and villas (Villa Madama, Rome). They were also responsible for fortification projects (Castro, Florence, Perugia, Rome) as well as dozens of other secular and religious buildings throughout Italy. Their drawing archive is now located in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe of the Uffizi in Florence.
Volume II will cover churches, and Volume III will cover palaces and the antique. Foremost scholars in the field have written complete catalogue entries for each drawing.
Christoph L. Frommel is Co-director of the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome. Nicholas Adams is Professor of Architectural History at Vassar College.
Customer Reviews:
Seeing an important Renaissance architect at work.......2000-05-25
Antonio da Sangallo the Younger was one of the most important architects of the Renaissance during the first half of the 16th century in Italy. A few of his buildings belong to the guiding examples of public and private architecture. Overshadowed by better known artists like Bramante or Michelangelo, his reputation among his contemporaries was as least as high as that of those. But he is also the one architect by whom survived more drawings than of any other one of that time (and even of later times). The long-prepaired edition of these drawings - from the collection of the Florentine Uffizi - is a milestone not only in architectural history, but also in editing important art historical material at all. A group of famous and highly-skilled architectural historians made this work available with a lot of deep-going contributions to the analysis of the drawings. So, reading comments about fortresses, machines and other buildings normally not thought of to be of great interest at all, lets one understand how an architect with great skill and experience (and a large group of collaborators) managed "his job". In fact, Sangallo seems to be the first architect in European history, who organized his work in a way very close to the one still used today: the architect gives ideas to further development to his collaborators, corrects their contributions and organizes the whole work of the "studio" rather than doing everything himself - as others did at the same time. I think, one can not only learn a lot about a special architect in a special time from this book, but also, how architectural invention and execution was organized in the renaissance (and from then on). The detailed analytic descriptions of the drawings sometimes even read like a step-by-step solution of complicated riddles, and it's interesting to follow the discussion of such a complicated matter. If you are interested in architecture or art history, this book is a must!
Book Description
HAIRa musical revolution that defined a generation. Seen by over 30 million people in its first 4 years, it became a cultural phenomenon and a worldwide success. It rocked and shocked the world and was the training ground for many of today's biggest stars.
Good HAIR Days, written by original cast member Jonathon Johnson, offers an insider's look into the Broadway musical HAIR. Johnson is joined by original producer Michael Butler and over 25 original cast members who share their stories. HAIR was more than just a show, it was a message of love and peace that survived strong denunciations and controversies that exploded once the show went on the road. Many threats followed, some which were tragically carried out.
Join the HAIR tribe as the cast and crew lived it. Good HAIR Days covers these events and reintroduces the world to HAIR's messages, which are just as valid today as they were in 1968. An honest and accurate view of the production history, Good HAIR Days is filled with touching personal stories, original cast lists, and many humorous events that offer a refreshing glimpse into the psychedelic 60's and 70's.

I am forever indebted to you for your gift of memory and the efforts to preserve and enliven the Hair experience. So many times I felt "We need this movement today, our country is going down the same road it was in the 60's." Sending you my love, and gratitude.
