Magic Eye Mania.......2007-01-12
This book is packed with more images than any other I own, and more vivid colors. I have a lot of favorite pictures, and I love that there are varying degrees of difficulty and depth so theres something for everyone in this book. My only regret is that I cant frame a couple of them as abstract art on my walls. If your looking for an all inclusive book of Magic Eye visual art, this is definately my top choice and top recommendation.
Some good images here, but some duds, too........2006-12-25
(3.5 stars) I've always been a huge fan of Magic Eye images, and I wanted to find a large collection that might keep several grandchildren busy and having fun during the winter holidays. This collection of 3D images, however, proved to be something of a disappointment. Though there are several hidden pictures that are clear and very professionally done (an image of football players and one of an eagle hunting, for example), about twenty-five percent of the images are either unclear, ill-defined, or uninteresting as subject matter.
Two "glass" images are simply the 3D version of the flat image. Five pages contain "no image" at all. Two mazes appear, but only one can be solved--the other has two dead ends at the beginning. Other questionable images include two jet planes with a target site superimposed, making the picture appear confused, a chariot race in which the chariot is unclear and the driver looks like a triangle; and Saturn with its rings where the bottom half of the planet is so hard to see, that the image look like a ranger's hat. Some images of little interest include those of yin and yang, a tapestry weave, an ugly cone, a cube, a car driven by a wolf, a ball seen through mesh, op art, symbols for male and female, four puzzle pieces, and penguins (not polar bears) in front of an igloo (?!?).
I really enjoy this series, but this selection was not interesting to my audience, who felt that many images were just too much work for an image of little interest. In total, I found fifty-seven of the eighty-eight images to be acceptable to good, and two are excellent. Thirty-one, which I marked in the corner so people could skip them, were inferior and detracted from what could have been a terrific collection. n Mary Whipple

Magic Eye Gallery: A Showing Of 88 Images
by N.E. Thing Enterprises
I am pleasantly surprised that this treasury of eighty-eight colourful random-dot stereograms is still around. The publisher is apparently the leading pioneer in this field. I thought the 'craze' had faded towards the end of the nineties.
Personally, I am also fascinated by random-dot stereograms. My first exposure to them happened when I attended the PhotoReading workshop in 1992 & then reading Andrew Kinsman's wonderful book, 'Random Dot Stereograms', about the same time. Besides books, I have also amassed a large collection of posters & post-cards in the same genre.
My personal stance towards random-dot stereograms is that they help to demonstrate the two specific phenomena of human perception i.e. binocular disparity & stereoscopic vision.
Although they are great fun to play with, I find them very educational in understanding - & appreciating - how the brain really works! In actuality, each of your two eye balls take in sensory data independently from each other. To see a random dot stereogram, your two eye balls must work together as a coordinated team to sustain a soft focus (or unfocused gaze). In other words, it takes two eye balls to tango!
For some people, random dot stereograms may be difficult to see (especially during the first attempt) when compared to conventional visual illusions found in 'Can You Believe Your Eyes' & 'Seeing Double' by J Richard Block respectively.
I often notice that many people can see the colourful random dot stereograms more readily than the black & white ones!
For your further visual entertainment, I would like to suggest the following collections, also published by N E Thing Enterprises:
- Magic Eye: A New Way of Looking at the World;
- Magic Eye Vol 2;
- Magic Eye Vol 3;
- Magic Eye: A New Bag of Tricks;
To conclude this review, I can only say that when you can readily see random dot stereograms, irrespective whether they are in colour or black & white, you will be able to understand & appreciate the power of 'splatter vision' practised by secret service agents, army snipers, fighter pilots, martial artists, fast readers, animal hunters & nature observers.
AMAZING.......2005-01-15
This book it TOTTALLY amazing. it has a hidden 3-d image inside a 3-d backaround. I do not even no how they do it without 3-d glasses. It is so easy to use to when you get used to it. later on you will just start starring into random pictures. You may think that is stupid but even though it sounds boring it, you will be sitting down starring at one picture for so long. You will love the stunning 3-d effects. I started getting into this by buying a 3-d spongebob book. It didn't include 3-d glasses so I borroed them. Then I tyhought myswell have some fun wlile I have the 3-d glasses so I searched the internet for pictures that need 3-d glasses. I found so much. Then I learned the cross eyed one. I get that one. Then i learned the parrelell trick. That was o.k. Then I found a wierd site in my search results. It said "magic eye". I looked at it. Then the next day I hatdto give the glasses back. I was sad. I looked at that site again [...] I noticed it did not need 3-d glasses and there was only one image of it instead of 2. I looked into it. I did not believe it at first. I thought it was fake. To see if i was right I printed one out. I looked at the directions. I got fustratted because I couldn't see it(it was saturn). right befor I was about to put it down I saw a big 3-d circle made of stars. Then a ring sorrounded it. I was amazed
Nice images, but book is falling apart.......2005-01-04
The images in the book are cool and there are a lot of them, but sadly the book cannot take much handling-my copy of M.E.G. has about 3 pages that have detattached. I have other 3-d image books and they are hard cover with durable binding, which is very necessary since the book gets a lot of handling when people are trying to see the images especially for the 2 page spreads.

Highly Motivating!.......2000-04-19
I loved this little book. I read it through very quickly, though it was packed with great info and tips. It actually got me out and about every morning, painting little postcard sized paintings. If you've wanted to try sketching and painting on location, this will help you get started.

Good beginner book.......2007-02-02
This book would be very helpful to a true beginner lots of tips and explanations. Very easy to read and follow no rocket science here. I would recommend this to anybody who is starting out in closeup and or macrophotography
Shaw's "Closeups in Nature".......2006-07-22
"Closeups in Nature has provided a good technical approach to closeup photography, especially for the amateur photographer. I was in need of information relative to lense specifications and technical data to try and sucessfully photograph some difficult subject for publication. THis book gave some very generic insight on how to start that photo process and some guidance on how to develope a personal technique.
Classic.. but needs revision.......2006-03-10
This is an excellent book.. if you still use equipment that you have purchase during early 80's. Although the same photographic principles apply, this book can definitely benefit from some major revisions.
Very Good Book.......2005-06-08
This book is very good for Beginners to Intermediate Level Photo Enthusiasts. It has couple of tips and examples which the reader has to grasp and note down till they start using it and make familiar with it. Overall a Great Book for the price with pictures, explanation, Shutter Speed and Aperture values. Lot of new photography students wonder hey how did you get this picture ? What shutter speed and Aperture did you use ? The book indirectly gives you all the answers. Spend time reading it (no Rush) and you will explore new techniques which you can practically use and implement. I Recommend this book.
Out of date - too little advice on technique.......2004-11-02
This book is from 1987, I briefly read the reviews saying that it wasn't in the digital era, OK I figured that's fine, how out of date could it be? However, I didn't expect that so much of the book would be dedicated to functionality that's now fully automatic, such as TTL Flash, and TTL exposure metering.
It's certainly a very interesting technical read, that provided me with an understanding of all the different macro options, lenses, filters, extensions, TC's, reversing rings, bellows, reverse mount adapters, lens stacking, etc. However, it wasn't for me.
I was after something that would show technique, or provide advice on how/where to find the shots he was taking, but the book doesn't cover that at all, to my dismay the book starts with the author writing "it always surprises me that folks find it hard to find subjects" but then provides no advice. After having bought a 60mm Micro lens I was hopeful this would provide direction, but other than "I probably should have bought the 105mm lens" I didn't get any direction from it.

This is a study of when and how compulsory labor has been imposed in different countries since the abolition of slavery.
Book Description
In the telling of these stories, critical elements are the members of this family, their neighbors and friends, their remarkable kinship to the special places around them, and the simple and wonderful things happening there. It is, however, these old and wrinkled mountains of western North Carolina... their majesty, their deep coves and dark hollows, their ridges and towering peaks, and the life-changing influences they impose upon those who linger there that ultimately define The Denton Experience.

Book Description
“When we were children we made our own fun” is a frequent comment from those who were children in pre-television times. But what games, activities and amusements did children enjoy prior to the mid-1950s?
Recollections of older Canadians, selections from writings by Canadian authors and letters written to the children's pages of agricultural publications indicate that for most children play was then, as now, an essential part of childhood. Through play, youngsters developed the physical, mental and emotional skills that helped them cope with life and taught them to get along with other children.
In both rural and urban settings, children were generally free to explore their environment. They were sent outdoors to play by both parents and teachers. Their games were generally self-organized and physically active, with domestic animals acting as important companions and playmates. Children frequently made their own toys and equipment, and, since playing rather than winning was important, most children were included in games. Special days, holidays and organizations for children and youth provided welcome breaks from daily routines. Their lives were busy, but there was always time for play, always time for fun.
Norah Lewis has provided an entertaining view of the toys, games and activities in Canada and pre-confederate Newfoundland from approximately 1900 through 1955. Her book will be of interest to historians, educators and sociologists, as well as anyone who lived through, or wants to know more about,those early years in Canada, and the games children used to play.

Timeless alternatives to the blare of popular culture.......2003-02-07
Examining the period of 1900 through 1955, Freedom To Play: We Made Our Own Fun presents the fond childhood memories of a variety of Canadians, and who learned to entertain themselves with improvised toys and games. From simple sports to crafting one's own radio to going sledding or on a school picnic, these enjoyable pastimes both preserve wonderful memories of the past and offer timeless alternatives to the blare of popular culture entertainment today. Compiled and edited by educator Norah L. Lewis (a member of the Canadian Childhood History Project), Freedom To Play is an original, scholarly, and highly recommended contribution to Canadian History reference collections and Canadian Popular Culture Studies reading lists.

An engaging biography of an American naturalist.......2001-07-06
Two traditions exist side by side in the literature of natural history: the scientific tradition, running through Linnaeus and Darwin to the evolutionary biologists of today, and the romantic tradition, passing from Gilbert White to John Burroughs and today's conservation and nature movements. The American naturalist Florence Merriam Bailey (1863-1947), the subject of this biography, was one of those rare individuals who was at home in both traditions. In her early years Bailey was active in the crusade against feather hats, and we see her vigorous work "in the trenches" of Smith College and of Washington society. On the scientific side, as sister to C. Hart Merriam and as wife to Vernon Bailey, pioneer figures in the U.S. Biological Survey, Florence Bailey was an explorer of the American West, and her many expeditions provided material not only for her technical Handbook of Birds of the Western United States (1902) and her Birds of New Mexico (1928), but for dozens of travel and life history accounts in the popular press as well. Ample quotations from Bailey's writings give a vivid picture of the early West, and make it easy to understand why her works were appreciated by both professionals and amateurs.
The weakness of this biography is that, unlike Bailey, its author is at home only in the romantic tradition. We are told on three occasions, for example, that the scientific method of bird study was to "shoot first and ask questions later," a derogatory characterization Bailey would probably not have made inasmuch as her brother and husband were among the greatest collectors of their generation. Florence Bailey comes through as an admirable figure, but the manner in which her story is told will tend to reinforce the prejudices that members of both the scientific and romantic traditions have toward each other today. [Adapted from my review in Archives of Natural History, 18(3): 415, 1991.]
No Woman Tenderfoot: Florence Merriam Bailey, Pioneer Natura.......2000-05-23
I highly recommend this book. It is a wonderful read about a highly individualistic, inspiring woman who lived a fascinating life. I found it soothing and stimulating at the same time: it made me get up off my duff and get back out into the big outdoors to take another look at birds and the natural world, and it also gave me hope about what we can do as individuals to learn about and protect the environment. Florence helped start the movement to ban the practice of putting birds and bird feathers on women's hats that nearly wiped out many of our bird species around the turn of the century. Her early life in the woods with minimal schooling allowed her to see the world in a less cynical, socially molded way, making it possible for her to become one of the preeminent naturalists of her day. She traveled all over the West camping with her naturalist husband and observing birds so that she could write some of the first field guides for these areas. As a writer and a scientist, I found the author's descriptions of Florence's scientific technique, which relied on intimate observations of birds' daily lives, fascinating. What a role model! I will read this book again whenever I need to replenish my stores of hope and curiousity.

Cult of the Koi.......2002-07-21
Great book! Equally helpful for the novice and experienced Koi lover alike! Great pictures and detailed descriptions.I highly recommend this book.
Not much details, outdated.......2002-04-25
I don't think this is the best book on Koi. Although it covers all the standard topics (Koi identification, pond building, filtration system, diseasees, etc.), it does not give enough details in each topic. The "Tretra Encyclopedia Book of Koi" is by far the best . I know, it is not available for sale any more, but try to find it in a library. It is well worth the effort and you can save money as well.
Cult of Koi is the best I have seen!.......2000-05-16
The book is an excellent reference for beginners and experts as well. It gives a great overview of the history of Japanese, Domestic and German Koi. It gives an excellent
review of the different types of Koi that have help me a great deal in identification.
My local Dianichi and Sankaye Koi dealer also says that their consensus is that Cult of the Koi is by far the best they have ever seen.

Master American Gardening.......2003-09-11
"American Gardens: A Tour of the Nation's Finest Private Gardens," by Peter Loewer brilliantly captures the horticultural genius of master gardeners across the United States. Moreover, the diverse photography on nearly every page of this beautiful book allows it to double as a coffee table selection. But be diligent...because your guests may decide to take it home with them.
The author provides an extensive menu of gardens. It includes perennial gardens, rock gardens, woodland gardens, desert gardens, shrub gardens, city townhouse gardens and even rooftop gardens. The gardens also include a broad rande of climates, terrains, styles and sizes. For pure artistry the "Garden of Roses," by Bruce Krasberg in suberban Winnetka, Illinois, a city north of Chicago, on Lake Michigan is a beautiful testimony to our national flower.
However, my favorite garden is that of Elsa Bakalar in northwestern Massachusetts, not too far from Brattleboro, Vermont. Her garden is actually a patchwork of individual gardens, pieces here and there that add up to an acre on a property of about five acres that includes a pond, a big meadow, and some woods. Bakalar designed giant beds with blends of color schemes mixed in with natural backgrounds.
Still and all, the true value of this book for gardeners is "Part Two: Great Ideas for Your Garden." It includes a section on seasonal specialties, gardens in containers, statuary and ornaments and finally paths and paving. The author also provides an outstanding index of sources of supply from plant societies, regional gardening resources, commerical seed companies and mail order nurseries. And finally the text also has a detailed bibliography. This book would make a great gift for the gardener in the family. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Symbols as Power deals with the period between the end of the Investiture Contest in 1122 and the re-establishment of the Roman Senate in 1143. It was a time of transition when popes had to chart new policies relating to the church and the empire. This study concentrates on information encoded in such media as art, architecture, ecclesiastical furniture, pageantry and liturgy. Combined with written sources it analyzes the ideology and policies of each of the four popes reigning in this period. In some cases they manipulated these media as propaganda, and in others their views were less consciously subsumed in the object or ceremony. Strong currents drew the papacy in opposite directions - back towards its apostolic origins, and forward toward a more secular, imperial papacy. All of the popes but one chose the path leading to papal monarchy at the end of the century. Anaclet II, who lost the battle for recognition as pope in the schism of 1130-1138, identified more with the paleochristian church and its religious orientation. This book illuminates a crucial moment in the papal quest for reform and power in both the ecclesiastical and secular spheres. Not only scholars in the field, but also advanced and graduate students interested in iconography and papal politics will find it provocative and enlightening.

Helpful Review of Literature.......2000-12-23
Respected UCLA dance pedagogue, Judy Alter has compiled a thoroughly useful review of 20th century dance theory that should find its place as a resource text in Dance Theory courses throughout academia. An overview of important contemporary schools of thought, Alter's book emanates from her belief that Dance theory must come from the experience of Dance rather than from borrowed aesthetic philosophies that do not incorporate the corporeal in their initial musings.
To that end, Dr. Alter's first chapter lays out what could be called a manifesto of belief; a definition of Dance and what she believes is required for the creation of a complete dance-based dance theory. It is here that several paradoxes appear: Art-based aesthetics are seen as inadequate yet Dance as a discipline has fought hard to be considered an Art; theory is essentially derived from Word and Symbol yet Dance is essentially Movement and Body; the vast majority of Dance is participatory and improvisational yet most Dance Theory focuses upon the presentational and choreographic forms.
The following chapters review the basic tenants of various theories and it is here where I have a few quibbles. Alter's analysis of H'Doubler's work focuses solely upon "Dance: A Creative Art Experience", ignoring the evolution that H'Doubler's ideas underwent with the following generations of Dance educators. Alter reveals her bias towards Rudolph Laban's work through her insistence that a complete Dance Theory must include a viable notation system as well as her claim that LMA is not culturally biased because Laban was familiar with many different cultures.
These quibbles aside, Dr. Judith Alter has contributed a very strong entry into a field of study that desperately needs fresh inquiry. The review of literature will work well in undergraduate courses and her call for a truly Dance-based Dance theory raises a standard that Dance must attain to be considered a serious academic discipline.
