5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source Book.......1999-12-28

If you're looking for house plans for an old house or are remodeling an old house, start here. These are plans for real houses the way they actually were built, not the way somebody thinks people want them built today. It's a great book, with elevations and floor plans complete with measurements. There are also a lot of other schematics, for windows, doors, stairs, paneling, wainscotting, etc.

        Book Description

If photography is the art of writing with light, then photographer Dan Dancer has written the story of Kansas. In this beautiful volume, he has assembled a portrait of the state in its many different lights--a sunflower field at dawn, a rural Main Street in the eerie, greenish light of a summer storm, a nighttime prairie fire, and a dusty stretch of prairie in the hot light of midday.

In 105 full-color photographs Dancer moves through the four seasons, capturing first the vast, spare grandeur of prairie and sky, then focusing closer, to illuminate the more intimate pieces of the Kansas landscape--the icy fur of a buffalo in winter, a solitary gravestone nearly overgrown by prairie grass. He pursues what he calls "wild space"--uncluttered landscapes that embody a quiet beauty that eludes the hurried and undiscriminating eye. Season by season, he uncovers the uncomplicated, subtle beauty of the state.

This revised edition features a new preface, four new seasonal essays, and twelve new photographs replacing those found in the original 1988 edition.

5 out of 5 stars Essential book on the mathematics of cryptography.......2006-06-20

This wonderful book lies between the layman's approach of "The Code Book" and "Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms, and Source Code in C", which takes an algorithmic approach to cryptography but glosses over the mathematical details. It is great for people who already understand the use of various cryptographic algorithms as depicted in "The Code Book", but want to understand the underpinning mathematics before they implement cryptography in code. It is the best of the applied math books on the subject, since it manages to explain the mathematics behind cryptography without getting bogged down in proofs. If cryptographic algorithms and implementations are your business, all three books are essential reading.

This book is a college level mathematics text that does a pretty good job of explaining the mathematics involved without assuming a lot in the way of background, but a preliminary course in abstract algebra would certainly be helpful. If I have any criticism of the book it is that there is a scarcity of actual numerical examples versus the multitude of unsolved exercises left to the student. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the mathematics of cryptography.

NOTE: A second edition of this book is due in February 2007. Preliminary information shows it to be 100 pages longer than this edition. Thus, if you have to buy the first edition now, you might want to get a used one and demand a lower price due to the limited lifespan this edition has.

2 out of 5 stars Difficult to understand.......2006-05-06

I took this course at the U of Minn (where the author is a professor). He has a reputation of being a good professor and a good guy (and I have no reason to doubt it). Unfortunately, his book is very hard to understand. While packed chock full of information, it is written in a **very, very** dense style. It makes a lot of assumptions about your prior knowledge and there are few examples to illustrate the theory. While this may be OK for a grad student in math (or even a bright senior), it is definitely not sufficient for a non-math major and most undergrads.

                5 out of 5 stars Great buy!.......2003-04-27

Other than a few 1st edition errors and too small of an anwer key, the book is definitely worth the money. It has a very down-to-earth style which is great if you're using the book on your own like me. I'm using this book for the Siemman's Westinghouse Scholarship Competition, and I think it is a great book for anyone interested in Cryptology, whether they like math or not.

                5 out of 5 stars Actually 4.6.......2003-04-27

I like the book quite a bit because of the actual down-to-earth language Garrett uses. It is very nice since I'm using it on my own time. There some errors in the book, however. He also selects only about 25% of the questions to anwer in the key. He could show about 50% and give an explanation on how to find the answer. Other than that, there is nothing wrong with the book and those problems shouldn't keep you from buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on cryptology.......2003-04-16

Very good book. His explanation is very clear.
I recommand to anyone who wants to learn cryptology.
I think computer scientist will get the most benefits from
                this book.

Colleen Alexander-Roberts has done a lot of leg-work for you. She has written a book that touches on many, many aspects of adoption. The book is written in easy, flowing language. It is a great benefit to pick up a book that a lay person can understand. So many books are written in "legalese" which is very frustrating to those of us without legal training. Thanks, Colleen, for writing such an informative, easy-to-understand book for all us Moms-to-be (and dads-to-be).

                          Book Description

This collection was originally developed as an interdisciplinary reader for Puerto Rican Studies courses under the title The Puerto Rican Struggle: Essays on Survival in the U.S. It is being reissued with updated commentary because of its continuing relevance to courses in American, Ethnic, and Latino Studies. Included are articles that continue to be vital to the Puerto Rican community, but were generally ignored within more mainstream contexts, ranging from literary selections by non-academic writers to more traditional social science approaches. Articles on Puerto Rican women, the Young Lords, Latin music, the struggle for local political control, spiritualism, the struggles within the Catholic Church, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, race within ethnicity, political activism, the economy, and a beginning critique of the conceptual models and methods used to "measure" the quality of life among Puerto Ricans make up this interdisciplinary volume.

                              Book Description

For the first time in one collection, here are Montana's most famous animal stories, carefully researched and written by Great Falls author Gayle C. Shirley. Read about... Shep, the sheep dog at Fort Benton that met every train for more than five years, waiting faithfully for its master to return home. Earl, the vagabond elk that wandered to Missouri and became an ambassador for Montana. Giefer, the notorious grizzly that ransacked cabins and outsmarted trappers throughout the Flathead Valley. These stories and more reveal how some animals were celebrated for their loyalty and intelligence, while others were cursed because their instincts to survive put them in conflict with people. Whatever the reasons, their legends provide enjoyable reading for animal-lovers of all ages.

Although this book has good basic information it is several years outdated.

5 out of 5 stars Great Basic Cruise Information.......2005-09-27

This cruise plan and enjoy your cruise by Fodor is a great basic first read for anyone new to the art of cruise vacations.
It is easy to read, laid out simply and gives many idea's on which line to choose, what to take with you, when to go, how to investigate what excursions you might like.
After reading this book I then purchased two Travel books to look at my options for how best to investigate the ports of call I will be going to see.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Newbies.......2005-06-24

In Plan and Enjoy your Cruise by Fodor's FYI series, you get a brief, basic description of each step from planning, purchasing, packing for and enjoying your cruise trip.

The book is the size of a small paperback and is only about 200 pages of large-print type. That being said, it really does step you through all of the basic, common-sense things to keep in mind when you're planning a cruise. It talks about making sure you choose a cruise situation that is right for you - and not right for the travel agent's pocketbook. It discusses types of cruises, special needs, and how to choose a travel agent.

There are tips about what to do when you first get on board, how to make the most of your time at see, how to avoid any hidden charges. There are safety tips for both the cruise ship and shore excursions.

I don't know that this was really an "experts share their secrets" as touted on the cover of the book. There wasn't anything TOO secret in what I read! Again it was all pretty much common-sense information that you find on just about any cruise website. But it is all nicely gathered together for you, nice easy-to-read type, perfect for sitting back and thumbing through and preparing for your upcoming cruise.

Well recommended for the new cruiser!

With the rallying cry "we need new mysteries," +rosebud appealed to over 200 international artists, designers, scientists and authors to investigate the remaining enigmas in our world. The resulting fifth issue of the design magazine reveals secrets still hidden within our seemingly demystified and predictable everyday lives.

mystery presents the experiments of the participating artists on 350 impressive pages. Varying widely in form and content, all contributions examine the unexplained and paradoxical through subjects ranging from quantum physics and parapsychology to jackalopes.

Like its award-winning predecessors, +rosebud no.5 challenges the conventions of ordinary design magazines with unusual features including an integrated paper bag filled with little extras.

As I read through Dr. Ackerman's Book if the Great Dane, I found myself wanting more information than what was given. It was almost as if the author was trying to beat a deadline; so minimal information was given on a vast number of subjects. If you are getting a Dane or have a Dane and wanting a book to help you get a better understanding of the breed, look elsewhere. This book only left me asking more questions.

Dr.Ackerman does a wonderful job of making sure the reader understands the Great Dane. He lets it be known that the Great Dane isn't for everyone because of it's incredible size. Ann Lovejoy describes Cascadia as a gardener's paradise, but it's an Eden with steady winter rains and long summer draughts. This has spawned an abundance of gardening wisdom even for those who don't live within the perimeters of northern California to British Columbia. With sage monthly advice on encouraging the blooms that thrive in one's local soil and weather, and opulently gorgeous pictures by Sandra Lee Reha, Lovejoy's garden visions are exceptionally refreshing and inspirational.

                                          Book Description

Cascadia, the lush region of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, is a place and a state of mind-particularly for gardeners. Here Ann Lovejoy, author of the classic The Year in Bloom, turns her attention to the aesthetic roots and boanical possibilities of shaping, planting, and tending a garden in this evergreen place framed by mountains and water.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A delightful book.......2003-09-21

This is one of the most delightful books I've read in ages. I found it to be combination of poetic insight and sage advice - easy to say but very difficult to do well. For the gardener in the Pacific Northwest, it's a book to enjoy on a dark evening in front of the fire as you dream of next year's garden. And if you love natural gardens but live elsewhere, enjoy it for the prose and the beautiful images.

The writer defines Cascadia as the coastal region from northern California to southern British Columbia, taking in western Oregon and Washington State. This is probably one of the finest places in the world to create a garden and this book celebrates its richness of climate, scenery and natural plant growth. The writer has designed and worked in the gardens of Cascadia for many years and she has a deep understanding of the natural advantages (and excesses) of the region and how they can be united in beautiful gardens.

The exceptional photography by Sandra Lee Reha vividly illustrates each of the short essays in this book, interpreting them with unusual clarity. The page-long essays, almost poetry, somehow combine description that is as lush as the northwest rain forest with plenty of sound gardening advice. The final twelve chapters, one for each month of the year, articulate the glory of the Cascadia garden throughout the seasons.

This is not an in-depth, how-to-garden book, but a leisurely overview. Indulge yourself with this slim book, or buy it as a gift for a friend

In general, I love Ann Lovejoy's books. They're enjoyable to read and when I read her essays, I always seem to find myself muttering, "Oh! that's why that isn't growing well" or "that sounds like something I should try in that spot in the rose garden". But this book is more of a picture book than a collection of essays. It's a lovely picture book, though, if that's what you're looking for. If not, I'd recommend one of her other books, like The Border in Bloom or The Garden in Bloom.
