Book Description
In the Nightside, the hidden heart of London where it's always 3 AM, Detective John Taylor must find an elusive singer known as The Nightingale. Her silken voice has inexplicably lured many a fan to suicide--and Taylor is determined to stop her, before the whole neighborhood falls under her trance. But to catch the swift-winged Nightingale, he'll have to hear the deadly music--and survive.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
John Taylor might have a thing for lost daughters it seems, as he takes on another case involving such a woman. This time she is not lost in the physical sense, but mental, being a famous singer.
A fun tidbit in that the Nightside has its own transvestite superheroine.
We see here that the Nightside is a mixture of superscience and the supernatural, much like Grimjack's Cynosure, for another example, when John is called in at the start to look at the problems a power plant run by an old friend is having. What is at the heart of that is a plot used many a time in comics.
We also discover the newspaper is run by the World's Greatest Victorian Adventurer hero, who was sent through time by his old archenemies, the fate of whom no-one knows.
John, teaming up with Dead Boy, must work out what is going on.
These Nightside books are very entertaining.
More Creepy Fun.......2006-10-10
The Nightside books center on John Taylor, a private investigator who has special abilities that help him find things in a dark, magical place called the Nightside. I love how these are written in a sort of classic pulp fiction detective novel, yet very fresh and fun.
In Nightingale's Lament, the third book, Taylor is hired to find a famous singer in the Nightside whose audience seems to be committing suicide after her shows. Many more creepy (and yet fun) characters are introduced in this story that either aid or try to kill Taylor along the way.
Took me a while to get into it.......2006-07-08
If I were only rating the last third of this book, I'd give it 4 and a half stars. But it took a while to get there, and the piles of cliches at the beginning nearly turned me off. As well, Green's writing style has some flaws - people don't speak like that! and some of the character names are a little too stupid - and, to some extent, just an "Englishness" that makes his style a little more difficult for me, as an American, to get into.
Even at the end of the book, there are many cliches, although Green hams them up so that we know they're there semi-intentionally: the the villain who must explain his motivations to the hero, at length, rather than just killing him; the back-up help that charges in just *after* they're needed. And there are a few things that are unfair; it's my belief that even fantasy requires consistent rules, and characters should not have new powers that suddenly spring out of nowhere, unportended and unprecedented (such as Dead Boy suddenly revealing that he can bring back other dead.)
That said, there are also many, many great lines of dialogue, and that's a big chunk of what gives this book 4 stars in spite of the flaws. Especially toward the end, I was constantly interrupting my spouse's eating or TV viewing to read out loud a sentence or two.
"I've never relied on magic to get me through the many and varied dangers of the Nightside. I've always found using my wits and being downright sneaky much more reliable." Not to mention, "Condiments. Never leave home without them."
Many other reviews have given you details of the plot and of the kinds of supernatural powers that exist in this particular urban fantasy universe, so I won't repeat them. Instead, I'll just advise you to skim lightly the first quarter of the book, start reading more carefully when you get to Pew, and thoroughly enjoy the last quarter.
I expected more.......2006-03-30
I went in not expecting much and that's exactly what I got. It's a quick and easy read but the ending was disappointing. I expect more from an established author. I like the concept of the series and might read the next one but I have been disappointed so far. This one is the worst of the first three in the series.
Singing the Blues (and Blacks) in the Nightside.......2006-03-17
In this, the third installment of Simon R. Green's bloody and brilliant Nightside series, the infamous John Taylor finds himself with a new case, the mystery of the beautiful singer Rossignol (which means Nightingale in French) a torch singer with a voice so sad, so powerful, that some of her fans have taken to killing themselves after hearing her sing.
But John had powerful friends and even more powerful enemies. This novel introduces us to a whole host of dastardly new characters, The Murder Masques, Dead Boy, Julian Advent, and the Cavendishs, just to name a few.
As usual, razor blade action is interspersed with humor as dark as Tarsus in just the right mix to keep you so rived, it's almost impossible to put this book down.
The Nightside series is one of those rare series that no review, let alone mine, is powerful enough to capture fully. It's a set of books that the curious must experience for themselves to get the full feel of the thing, and they will be glad that they did.

Book Description
For feisty Los Angeles crime reporter Molly Blume, life is good. She is newly married (to the adoring and adorable Rabbi Zack), and her latest true-crime book is a hot seller. However, when an overardent fan’s attentions arouse Molly’s suspicion, her thoughts turn uneasily to stalkers.
But the fan, Reuben Jastrow, swears that he desperately needs Molly’s help in finding his eighteen-year-old daughter, Hadassah, who has run away from home to be with a man she met on the Internet. Molly hesitantly agrees–and immediately has regrets. For Reuben hasn’t told her the whole truth. The more Molly looks for clues to the missing girl’s fate, the more she wonders: Is Hadassah a random victim of a predator, or is the girl a pawn in a scheme of revenge against her family?
It’s a long, deadly path that stretches before Molly, a path mined with hidden passions and festering secrets. And it ends with a final twist and an unnerving truth: What we don’t see can lead to danger . . . and tragedy.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting mystery.......2006-12-14
This is the first Molly Blume mystery I've read, and I really enjoyed it -- enough that I will probably go back and read the earlier ones, to find out how Molly got to where she is. As an Orthodox Jew, I'm impressed with the accuracy and understatement of Ms. Krich's depiction of modern Orthodox Jews -- it's so accurate, without painting the lifestyle as the source of all ills or the source of all happiness as a lot of other writers try to do.
I'm also looking forward to the next book. There are some hints in this one of Molly's possible infertility, and I really hope the author delves into that -- having her deal with fertility issues and treatments rather than just providing a miraculous baby. It's such an important topic, especially within the Orthodox world. I would love to see how Molly deals with it.
One of the Best Mysteries Ever.......2006-11-04
This book is FABULOUS! It was filled with plenty of suspense.
Probably one of Rochelle Krich's best.
Molly Blume, the imperfect heroine, sounds an important wake-up call.......2006-07-04
Krich hits her best stride ever in dissecting the intricate relationships that exist between teacher and student, mentor and protege, and lovesick, confused teens. Molly Blume comes through again as her imperfect, human self gets personally involved in helping a HS senior save herself from a series of bad decisions.
The Orthodox Jewish world should take extra note of this important book that analyzes, albiet fictionally, the challenges facing the majority of teens today, in varying levels and consequences. There is also a veiled indictment of the tunnel vision that exists among many adults and educators that "its not happening in my backyard".
Kudos to Rochelle for taking on a difficult topic with grace, and with a great plot twist at the end.
Now you see me..........2005-11-24
I just LOVE all of Ms. Krich's novels! I am in the middle of "Speak No Evil" (been up since 4:30 a.m.!) because I just HAVE know... "who done it?!"
I have enjoyed all of Ms. Krich's novels and am waiting with baited breath for her next one.
A CONTROLLED, FINELY NUANCED READING.......2005-11-23
Voice performer Deanna Hurst delivers a controlled, finely nuanced reading of Rochelle Krich's fourth episode in the adventures and misadventures of writer Molly Blume. As many know, Blume's Orthodox Jewish faith is very much a part of her life - Krich describes this beautifully and Hurst reads these passages with dignity and respect. Further, it's a bit of a dual performance for Hurst as the story revolves around a missing girl, Hadassah, and Hurst imbues this character's lines with guilelessness and gullibility.
Finding the missing Hadassah is not a job Blume sought, but she feels she owes a friend a favor. Seems the girl may have run off with someone she met on an Internet chat room, but the plot becomes murky with murder when the man in question is found dead. Surely the ingenuous Hadassah couldn't have committed such a crime....or could she?
Takes an expert voice performer to inhabit the voices of two rather disparate characters convincingly, but Hurst carries it off.
Listen and enjoy!

Young and old will benefit........2000-07-26
My elderly aunt has been plagued with arthritis for years and hasn't
always been willing to try alternative treatments. As her pain
progressed we convinced her to try the glucosamine and condroitan
blends. She is seeing substantial improvements! Our daughter is taking
it as a way to heal her back injuries due to an accident. She no
longer needs those heavy duty pain killers. Buy both of Theodosakis'
books and see for yourself....Treat arthritis naturally and see how
much better you feel without those pain killers that make your mind
fuzzy.
Worthwhile and perhaps more.......2000-05-03
This is the requisite "book biz" follow-up to their earlier book, The Arthritis Cure: The Medical Miracle that Can Heal, Reverse, and May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (1997), which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one. My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle. Written by three different laureled academics and obviously put together by committee, the earlier book was a big time best seller and occasioned this sequel. Most of the diet advice was like something I had read twenty years ago. The exercise program ditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference. In fact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use of these supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis. People bought the book in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also bought the book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine and chondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplements without the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or is it just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? I was a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, and we all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of a scoundrel."
So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairly close to their overall program. Two years have passed and although I cannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved.
In the follow-up book, the authors give information on other treatments.
I have to say that I think they've done a positive service in writing these two books. The information about healing in general and about prevention and about the positive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile. The authors may have made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they ripped anybody off, on the contrary. I am happy to be positive even though I still think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program can do, although I only have my own experience to go on. Their reports of the double blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way from convincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cure osteoarthritis.
Thank you for another remarkable book!.......2000-03-25
I'm not sure which book I enjoyed more; The Arthritis Cure or it's follow-up, Maximizing the Arthritis Cure. Either way, Dr. Theodosakis has done it again with an inspirational and helpful book. As a nurse, I recommended his latest book to my father who suffers from osteoarthritis in his knees. He has experienced exceptional relief from taking the glucosamine and chondroitin and following the other steps of the plan. He has been able to almost stop taking ibuprofen other than when he has a bad flare up. Now he is able to garden more comfortably and with better biomechanics and he is walking the dog on a regular basis again---the dog is grateful to the good doctor as well! I'm glad that more people in the medical community are coming around to recognize the power of these supplements.
Enlightening positive info, gives one a new sense of control.......1999-01-29
I enjoyed reading your book it was very informatiive with excellent suggestions for well being. I have one problem I hope you can help me with. Because of years of taking medications for R.A. my stomach is very sensitive to many medications such as asprin etc. I find I am unable to take chondroiten & glucosamine without stomach distress. Unfortunatley, these two supplements are a major part of the arthritis cure. I would appreciate any sugges tions.
Thank you Dr. Theo!.......1998-08-24
I was involved in a motorcycle accident several years back, which had left me with severe arthritis.
After reading Dr. Theo's book, my doctor and I decided to try to implement the program of nutrition and exercise, as well as the use of Chondroitin and Glucosamine, as outlined in "Maximizing the Arthritis Cure." All I can say is THANK YOU DR. THEO!
The book was well written, clear and concise. Dr. Theo has a great ability to turn medical jargon into easily understood layman's terms. He provides many useful insights as well as answers to the questions I've been asking all along.
I have seen many doctors, most of whom prescribed pain-killers and anti-inflammatory drugs. I was tired of getting the runaround and tired of hearing "You'll just have to live with it". Dr. Theo shows us a better way. If you or anyone you know has arthritis, you must read this book!

Cooking and eating vegetarian doesn't mean just dropping meat from your diet, it means "mak[ing] a nutritionally complete meal so that you are eating for optimal health." Max and Rosie Beeby, proprietors of Asheville, North Carolina's Café Max and Rosie's, have been serving up healthy and delicious vegetarian fare to locals and visitors since 1992 and proudly claim to have served over 80,000 veggie burgers. In Café Max and Rosie's: Vegetarian Cooking with Health and Spirit, the duo teaches you to cook tasty meals the whole family will eat and reveals some of their most popular recipes while encouraging you to consider the nutritional and social benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle.
Vegetarian fare has come a long way since the days of rice and beans and steamed veggies. Try whole grains like quinoa, amaranth, spelt, and millet in your meals. Millet Mashed Potatoes are healthier and more interesting than their plain counterparts (serve with a savory Mushroom Gravy). Since soy products have become mainstream, more options are available to the vegetarian cook. Tofu chili is just as hearty as the meat dish and has an extra zip from the addition of tamari and tahini. Try Braised Tempeh and Cabbage over rice or Japanese noodles. Substituting nutritional yeast for Parmesan cheese in Fettuccine with Vegan Pesto Sauce adds a "delicious but strong" flavor (adjust accordingly). The chapters on soups and salads are mouthwatering--the Garbanzo Cilantro Soup being particularly enticing. Rounding out Café Max and Rosie's are sections on making your own vegetable and fruit juices and smoothies, both for taste ("Georgia Peach") and for health ("Cure the Cold").
Max and Rosie are dedicated vegetarians who want to spread the word that "becoming a vegetarian does not mean being deprived of good-tasting food, it means stepping strongly in the direction of good health." Testimonials by friends and family are interspersed among Rosie's recipes and Max's artwork. If you aren't going to be near Asheville any time soon, pick up Café Max and Rosie's for the next best thing. --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
When Max and Rosie first opened their café, it had four booths, a counter with no stools, and a makeshift kitchen. They stuck to their then-novel notion that the natural, vegetarian food they served nourished a healthy and soulful life, and it was only a matter of time before Max and Rosie's Café and Juice Bar became one of the hottest spots in Asheville, North Carolina. CAFÉ MAX AND ROSIE'S serves up a tantalizing recipe collection featuring scrumptious overstuffed sandwiches, tasty international dishes, and an imaginative selection of fruit smoothies, freshly squeezed juices, and healing tonics that have locals and out-of-towners alike lining up at the door. Beautifully accented by Max's illustrations, CAFÉ MAX AND ROSIE'S is destined to become a treasured kitchen companion.
Customer Reviews:
AWESOME food! It will knock your socks off!.......2004-02-06
I just have to comment on this cookbook. The recipes it contains are absolutely delicious. I mean, it's unbelievable. Plus, the recipes are not complicated, and the food is very wholesome. You enjoy a plate of delicious food, and then your body feels great! (Not weighed down and greasy.) My favorite recipe out of this book is the Rhia Me Dear Rice Salad. This dish has been a minor obsession of mine ever since I lived in Asheville as a teenager. I now make it in my home regularly. The sauce that goes with it is DIVINE. It's vegetable bliss. If you want to eat healthfully, yet feel like you're cheating on yummy foods, get this cookbook. YUM!
The Real Thing..........2001-11-17
It was October 1994 that I took those first steps into Asheville's vegetarian food grotto. You actually step down a few steps to get into Max & Rosie's Café, and most always greeted by a happy face behind the counter. It has the feeling of some Sufi café in London (if indeed there is such a place). Maybe that's because Max (that's not his really name by the way) follows the Sufi path, and IS from London. He's Rosie's husband. She's from Miami (and Rosie's not her real name either). She'll tell if you ask...
When you buy their book you'll learn more about their names and how they got started. It's a little bit of a mystery.
This is a review of Max & Rosie Beeby's first book.
It wasn't long after visiting the café that first time, that Rosie shared with me her desire to write a book. Our heritages both stem from New York City so she was easy for me to love immediately! She had already been a Macrobiotic food teacher back in Florida, and now serving the public she was ready. It made sense. However, being an active and dutiful mother, and Max doing his artwork (which the book and cafe is filled with) there was little time for book writing (and Rosie would like to stay away from the computer as much as she can.
However they were determined, and 7 years later Ten Speed Press published the book. Named after their restaurant (as in the tradition of Moosewood and other best-selling cookbooks), Cafe Max & Rosie's is a delightful and creative 178 pages of, not only recipes, but short statements of some of the people who have worked and visited the café, sort of like their guest book.
This book is a great "table top" addition. You can "feel" not only the essence of the food, but can also get the same "feel" of Max's artwork. Ah, Max, quite a mystic himself. With the rugged look of an English pub bouncer, he exhibits the gentleness of a Buddhist monk. I've spent a couple of nights talking with him late at night in their log cabin in the mountains.
Their book is divided: Part one called "Rosie's Cooking Classes," and part two "Just Juice It!"
So, what distinguishes one cook book from another? Is it the amazing dishes? I think not, for as I have said of their restaurant, I say also of their book, "As Japanese culture has shown, how we eat--the ambience--is as important as the food itself."
The heavy parchment paper on which the words and artwork are reproduced can best be described as a table setting worthy of the love and purity contained within the recipes. And if you are indeed a food aficionado, page 56 offers a "Linguini with Fresh Garlic and Asparagus" recipe with tempeh, Portobello mushrooms, and spinach, that will soothe your senses, titillate your palate, and nourish you body.
Is this the best cookbook I have read? I can't say, because I don't "read" cookbooks, I sense them. My sense of the Cafe Max & Rosie's book is that it is very "edible." It is a book worth having in your home....
Sw. Virato is editor and producer/publisher of New Frontier Magazine, Asheville Magazine, and Chattanooga Spirit, Bliss Magazine.
Cafe Max and Rosie's: spirited nourishment at many levels!.......2001-03-02
I am returning to order my sixth copy of this inspiring and entertaining cookbook for a Vegan friend. My kids (7 and 9 years old) even love the fare, and that's a blessing to a single, working parent with little time and very picky eaters. Ten Speed Press scores again -- who wouldn't want to devour these deliciously clever dishes sourrounded by the tale of Max and Rosie's timeless love? Spirited, playful, and best-of-all yummy, healthful eating. Congratulations Max & Rosie -- your family is about to get much, much bigger!
Cafe Max and Rosies.......2001-01-22
What a fabulous book! It magically creates a whole ambiance around healthful eating, from the gorgeous illustrations to the mouthwatering recipes and delightful, insightful commentary that both captivates and educates. Also, as a practising Nutritionist, I really appreciate that these recipes are truly healthy and not dairy or wheat dependent. A perfect companion for those new to a naturally healthy lifestyle, and those seeking new inspiration in an established natural foods diet.
A cook book with soul.......2001-01-21
It is so hard to find a beginning of this review, as there is so much coming out of the book. First the book comes alive with the people that are involved in the making of the book, and the Cafe itself. It was like you read about the characters in a story which come to life and and you can not wait to get to the recipes to see what they have done. Without saying I thought the selection and types of recipes was outrages in the good sense. Besides having a wonderful cook book for veggies, they went beyond the normal and added the wonderful stories about the beginning and the people involved in the Cafe. I believe if more cook books were written this way the people would enjoy them more than they do. In closing I would like to congratulate Max & Rosie for a job well done. If more are to come would be very interested in knowing. Thank you.

Overall a good book with lots of information on the subject. A few of the pictures in the book were labelled with the wrong descriptions. Otherwise, worth the money.
The history is lively and well done.......2002-12-06
Firearms played an important role in the West, guarding against animals and outlaws alike. Guns Of The Old West is an informative survey which will interest a wide range of readers; from those interested in early firearms, to others who want an accurate narrative of those who used them. Descriptions accompany black and white drawings of rifles, revolvers and other weapons. The history is lively and well done and will interest a large audience.
Book Description
In the remote parts of America’s Western territories during much of the 1800s, law and order was overextended or even nonexistent. Guns were used by some, such as hunters and settlers, for self-protection and their very salvation, and by others as a means to impose their will, legally or otherwise. There can be no doubt that the exploration and exploitation of the Western frontier that began in 1804 was inextricably linked to the development of the firearm. It is certainly true today that firearms are associated with the Old West more than with any other era of American history. That Old West period, which ended officially in 1890, saw gun
design and manufacture improve dramatically, such that the “taming of the West” could be accomplished with grit and determination, and also with reliable firearms. It is not surprising to learn that very often those firearms were Colts or Winchesters, since these were the gunmakers who achieved more than most in technological development and manufacturing prowess, pioneering the revolver and the lever-action rifle, respectively. Within these pages are the pistols and revolvers, rifles and carbines used by the hunters, the settlers, the lawmen and the lawless, the military and the showmen. All are interestingly described in accompanying essays written by an acknowledged expert in the field.

Guns of the Old West: An Illustrated History.......2007-06-01
This was a gift to my husband. He loves it.
really good. info you won't find elsewhere.......2003-09-07
This is a really good book.
It has a lot of information about old guns that you simply will not be able to find elsewhere.
Mixed.......2003-04-03
A "mixed review" is about the best possible for this book,
because there is such disparity between the good and negative
elements. The photos are fabulous, which much detail and
well-informed captions, and that part is clearly the best
part of this book. Most photos were taken of gun collections
in famous museums, mainly the Gene Autry museum in L.A., and
the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, WY, so the guns themselves
are rare and usually documented in a way that clearly sets them
apart from what most of us will ever see. Anyone who has ever
tried to photograph a gun will have their breathe taken away
by the clarity and beauty of these photos, and they have to
be seen to be believed. Any student of the Old West, or of
firearms, will want to study these photos and relish the
details.
Unhappily, the text doesn't seem to have as much detail or
accuracy. Many old legends are repeated, seemingly without
verification, and some of them are rather discredited now.
So the stories have to be read with an open mind, knowing
that further reading would be required before forming an opinion
of some of the historic figures of the Old West.
So there is an odd mix in going through this book, but the
photos alone make this an interesting and worthwhile project.
Especially recommended for antique gun collectors.......2003-03-04
Guns Of The Old West: An Illustrated History by firearms expert and historian Dean K. Boorman (President of the Armor and Arms Club of new York) is detailed guide to the revolvers and firearms of America during the course of its frontier years. Black-and-white as well as color photographs present examples of numerous guns and gun-related memorabilia, thereby enhancing a thorough history describing the evolution of guns and the relentless advance of a technology that changed how wars and individuals on the American frontier fought for their lives. Guns Of The Old West is a fascinating, informative volume which is especially recommended for antique gun collectors and western history buffs.

Book Description
A critical essay on the declining economic and military greatness of Britain after World War I. The banking and industrial institutions that made Britain financially rock solid had been fatally weakened. Yet too many financiers and politicians were loathe to make accommodations for Britain's weakened state, and the country's voting population was generally unaware of the situation. Thus Britain continued diplomatically to play the part of a first-class world power, trying to impose a European settlement upon Germany, acting as the policeman of Europe, and telling the United States that its help was not needed. This was not only a bluff, it was self-deception.
Gilbert's critical analysis concludes with an examination of wartime politics, the effects of wartime civil defense activities on the postwar welfare states, and the astonishing defeat of Winston Churchill.

This affectionate, almost loving portrait of two of Britain's most distinguished and controversial artists is made all the more poignant by the fact that the biographer, art journalist and author Daniel Farson, died while writing it. Being about Gilbert & George, the salacious material is fairly unorthodox--the most shocking revelation is that George married as a young man and has two children--and for the most part Farson is almost apologetic about any intrusion into Proesch and Passmore's (their surnames) private lives. The first half of the book takes us from their childhoods in the Dolomites and Tiverton via their meeting at St. Martin's School of Art in the late 1960s to their current status as art icons. The second half sees Farson following them around--Moscow, Shanghai, Barnstable--as they exhibit around the world. Farson wisely highlights his admiration at the outset, and the reader is clear that this is no hatchet job. That said, he covers both the art and the lives with a straightforward professionalism that is never less than absorbing. This book is a fine tribute to Gilbert & George; equally, their closing words are a fine tribute to Farson: "On 27 November our dear Daniel died, not knowing how much we loved him (though we told him often enough)." --Nick Wroe
Book Description
Gilbert and George are now recognized as two of the most important living artists on the international scene. In their sculptures, photography, paintings, and performance pieces, they have proven themselves to be both amusing and subversive social commentators. Immensely popular in their native Britain as well as abroad, their work has been the subject of major exhibitions throughout Europe, Asia, and America--including an upcoming retrospective at London's Tate Gallery. Now Daniel Farson, with the full cooperation of Gilbert and George, has written a candid and intimate biography of the artists; entertaining, anecdotal, and richly informative, it reveals what lies behind the art world's most famously inscrutable double act. Daniel Farson is an art critic, biographer, and best-selling author. His books include Sacred Monsters, Jack the Ripper, The Man Who Wrote Dracula, Never a Normal Man, and The Gilded Gutter Life of Frances Bacon, which Booklist hailed as "a deliciously vibrant portrait."
Customer Reviews:
Ordinary people who produce extraordinary things.......2000-11-07
The best account of the duo's rise to fame, infamy and institutionalisation that you can buy, this is a warm-hearted biography of their life and work up until the mid-90s. The revelation that George was once married and led a relatively normal family life does nothing to dispel the suspicion that the pair remove their suits over the weekend and retire to the countryside anonymously. Certainly, the appear to have spent most of the 1970s being drunken party animals. It's amusing to listen to lots of critics initially finding them amusing, then alarming, then deeply moving, then warm and lovable, according to critical fashion. As with their art, the book has a melancholic air to it, as the author sadly passed away shortly before completion (the book stops rather abruptly and is finished with some travelogue essays on their exhibitions abroad). The closing observation by the pair that Farson did not realise how much they liked him is deeply sad. It's big and thick and well-written, and there is a nice selection of photographs. Best of all, you can order it from Amazon.co.uk for considerably less money than it costs to buy it here!
