The premise is interesting, and it could have been the means for exploring (and providing fictional answers to) many interesting questions. However, I could not finish this book. The protagonist is a terribly boring, solitary person, and in the first 150 pages, the holy houseguest doesn't do anything interesting enough to keep me reading. The snippets of Marian history are interesting, but that's about it.

This isn't so much a novel, as it is poetry of the heart. Her writing will make you weep, laugh and ponder the mysteries of life and love long after you've closed this book and replaced it on the shelf. Diane Schoemperlen takes human frailties exposes them to the light, and somehow transforms them into precious keepsakes. Warning: If you are looking for a lighthearted novel, despite its humour, this is not it. But if you want to find yourself truly stirred, please read this.

Profound at multiple levels........2007-04-04

No matter how shallow or deep your faith (even with no faith at all), this book can move you. I would have never picked it up, but my book club chose it. When I saw the cover, I literally laughed out loud. The humorous beginning grabbed my attention. This is a book I'll never get rid of because of the many profound quotes, poignant stories, accurate church history, and the honest, vulnerable exposure of one's faith.

Not what I expected..........2007-01-09

This book was not what I expected it to be. I picked it up thinking I would be reading a light-hearted "chick-Lit" type book that would be an easy read. What I got was a deeply introspective, historical book about the Virgin Mary that I quite enjoyed.

There is a great deal of religious/historical information about Mary that I did not know. Over 20,000 reported visions of her (some quite beautiful, some quite strange.) The author appears to have done a great deal of meticulous research, and I truly appreciate her efforts.

The un-named narrator of the book tells a delightful story of Mary's weeklong stay and there are several humorous moments I enjoyed. I found the narrator to be someone I truly identified with, being that I am also a single woman in my early forties. It's not often that I come across a character like that.

I only have one negative comment about the book and that is the over-use of the "comma." Practically every chapter has a paragraph (or two) that contains a series of words separated by the comma. It was a bit much after awhile. 4 1/2 stars for this one.

Lost and Found.......2006-09-07

If you are one of borderline faith due to the times, the doubt, the lack of conviction, etc., this book just might rejuevenate some faith. Mother Mary comes to visit an author who lives alone. She stays a week, during which time she becomes a friend. The book weaves what Mary does and says during her visit with past and present stories of Marian visitations, who they happened to, what happened afterward, and where they happened and when.

I found this book to be not only entertaining but enlightening in many ways. It was a nice story of friendship, a bit of enlightened ramble about the meaning we put into our lives. It was also a history of Mary with the back listing a host of Mary references should someone be inclined to investigate for themselves.

I thought this was a great book of faith, life, friendship, and miracles should you take the leap to believe.

I've read all the Heaven Lee series thus far - and I think this one is just as good as, if not better than, the others. And the recipes are fantastic! I know that's not a reason to buy a novel but it's kind of a fun extra bonus! This mystery is a quick read and I enjoyed it. I do agree with another reviewer who said they don't feel the chemistry between Heaven and Hank. He seems like a great guy, but I keep waiting for Heaven to meet someone who really lights a fire in her!

Not The Best Of The Series.......2004-03-12

I have reviewed all the books so far in this series. Although Death Is Semisweet is not as good as her two best books. A Stiff Risotto and Red Beans and Vice. It is much better than the other books in the series.

It's Christmas Time and Heaven Lee - 4 times divorced, once widowed, disbarred lawyer, ex-stripper and current restaurant owner is minding her own business, sitting in a restaurant with her friend Stephanie, discussing chocolate.

Suddenly a giant blimp which has been advertising Foster Chocolates fiftieth anniversary is shot down, its pilot killed.

Is someone trying to ruin Foster's anniversary or their entire business. Does Stephanie know anything about it? Does the fact that she's a member of the Foster Family and her side of the family was cheated out of the business by her uncles, the current owners have anything to do with it.

Nobody knows, but Heaven is determined to find out and with the help of her friends, once more leads an investigation into this sweet mystery.

What I liked about this book:

Heaven has really grown on me. I disliked her a lot in the first couple of books, but I think her character has mellowed out a little and isn't as irritating.

The mystery was interesting without too many characters, which has sometimes been a problem with her books. So many characters you can't keep them straight and finally just give up.

Many humorous parts. Heaven can be a scream.

Great Chocolate Recipes!

Things I don't like about the book.

I still find no chemistry between Heaven and her twenty years younger boyfriend Hank. But he's such a nice guy I feel bad dumping on him in every review.

My least favorite character is unfortunately in the book. Heaven's daughter, Iris. Heaven and Hank are practically shooting sparks off each other compared with the relationship these two have. Whenever they're together they seem as if they're two strangers instead of mother and daughter.

Heaven says how smart her daughter is. To prove how smart she is, Iris, who grew up with her mother's many bad marriages has taken for a boyfriend, A member of her father's rock band. (Iris's father is a famous rock star). This man who is already a grandfather, is also old enough to be Iris's father and is ex-drug addict and alcoholic. Considering Heaven finds him smoking a joint in her bathroom, I'm not too sure about the ex part.
I know this is just the kind of guy an intelligent girl would want to hook up with.

The mystery was interesting until the end. That solution was ridiculous and disappointing. I think I could have written a better ending.

Not enough use of her supporting characters. Where was Mona. Where was Chris. Please, Please bring back Bo Morales. That is the guy Heaven should get together with. He may also be young enough to be her son, but sparks really flew between them in the two books he was in.

This series is in the middle for me. Not as good as Mary Daheim or Joan Hess, but not as bad as many others, who will remain nameless.

Great, but not by much........2004-01-12

This is a particularly fine entry in the Heaven Lee lexicon, but the ending is reminiscent of the b-movie madman-seeks-revenge mind set. Given the state of mind and condition Heaven is left in on the last page one has to wonder if there is going to be an eighth novel in this series.

But don't dispare, read the novel anyway and enjoy it. The book is a casually good read --- just don't take it too seriously. Then be prepared to move on to something else when you finish it.

tasty amateur sleuth.......2002-09-14

The plaza, a shopping center in Kansas City, is festive dining the holiday season and Foster's Chocolates blimp just adds to the glittery atmosphere. Chef Heaven Lee and her friend Stephanie are eating at a restaurant in the plaza when they hear gun shots. Somebody shot at the blimp and killed the man operating it.

Foster's Chocolates is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary in business when a man trying to destroy them is murdered on the property. Heaven, always interested in solving a murder case, does a little snooping. She discovers that the Foster family is divided against itself and everyone had a motive to kill the man. Things turn really weird when Foster's Chocolates and Stephanie's Chocolates shop are vandalized, but Heaven is incensed when somebody trashes her restaurant too. She's very determined to find out who the perp is and bring that individual down.

This culinary mystery should come with a calorie warning: Do not read when hungry. The recipes, mostly chocolate, are easy to follow and taste delicious (don't say a word). The who-done-it is excellent because there's seems as many legit suspects as the number of carbo grams in any of the recipes. Lou Jane Temple has written another tasty amateur sleuth novel.

HIGHWAYMEN AND HORSES.......2000-08-14

The Regency is my period and many of the stories in this collection take place then. Also, I love horses. So this is super book for me. I tried to space the reading out, keep a little for later, but I got carried away and read it all in a hurry. I highly recommend it.

Entertaining if not envigorating.......1998-07-30

As always with short fiction anthologies, I liked some of the stories better than others. I didn't dislike any of these variations on "The Highwayman." The assortment was entertaining in general, and stories like, "The Bishop's Coffer," "The Dowry," and "The Forest's Justice" gave me interesting themes to ponder a little. But none of the stories really grabbed my heart as I know from prior experience some of the authors are very capable of doing. All in all this was a fun if not a very engaging collection. I recommend it for light reading and for those who look for "theme anthologies."

Excellent Resource.......2007-07-30

I am Victim's Advocate at a domestic violence and sexual assault crisis center, and I am also a survivor of sexual assault. I read this book as part of my training in 1994, and I use it frequently to help my clients. When I read the book, it seemed that the author was writing about me! It made me understand many feelings I had as a child, teenager, and adult, and it made me feel more "normal".

It has helped so many of my clients to work through their feelings as victims and to help them become survivors. The simple language and order of the chapters allows them to start anywhere in the book, put the book down for a while to process their feelings, and pick it back up when they are ready to continue. I order several copies of this book every year so I can let clients take a copy of the book home with them. This allows them to move at their own speed. Sometimes we read the book together in counseling if their feelings are too overwhelming to process by themselves. I highly recommend this book.

This book was one of the first I read after my rape a little over 2 years ago. I read this book in one day and handed it to my boyfriend to read it. It really helped me understand what I was going through and why. My boyfriend, at the time, was able to read it and was bale to further understand my anger, guilt-- all of the feelings that I was dealing with. Although one cannot fully understand those feelings unless you have gone through it yourself; this book does help family members, friends, and lovers understand as much as they can. I really recommend this book especially if you were recently raped. Please, also remember though that just reading a book and not seeking therapy will not help you recover fully. Seeking help from a person with experience in rape and sexual assault will help as well as reading, journaling, and speaking to friends and family.

Good information if you can get past the politics.......2004-01-05

Rape is one of those many real things in the life of humans that shatter good old time notions like "God never gives you more than you can handle" or "Everything happens for a reason", implying a "good" reason if we're bright enough to learn from it. What's to be gained from such an experience as rape? Just punishment? A sense of satisfaction for the rest of us because it didn't happen to us? Support for the notion "God works in mysterious ways"? Such adolescent ideas are one of the many reasons rape victims are further humiliated as made clear by this author.

Having encountered a woman who suffered rape I realized this was something I knew nothing about. As a male raised in a pre-60s atmosphere where respect for women was still taught to boys by parents - not by absent parents allowing Emenim to do the teaching - rape was too foreign for me to comprehend. In addition the advantages ambulance-chasing lawyers and fanatic feminists have taken by inventing rape victims made me suspicious of some claims made, including the now infamous assertion that all human males are born rapists and murderers. This author defines even "undress you looks" and catcalls as "small rapes". Thus not only reducing those who have been truly raped, but losing credibility by such ridiculous claims. Are we to believe that 1 in 4 women will be raped? Naturally, if definitions become as flimsy as those purported in this book then anything is rape so numbers become stratospheric. How can we know? By the time the author has made this reference the critical reader is long pondering agendas.

Human males are not generally born evil, but some become that way. By the numbers such males are fabulously rare, but they exist and perhaps more than most suspect. Like a single CFC responsible for the destruction of countless ozone molecules, a single rapist can cause irreconcilable damage to many and, as this book clarifies, to more than the rape victim. Which is not to take priority from the one most in need of assistance. That assistance comes in two forms - understanding and justice. The text goes some distance in directing how to assist understanding and warns about the typical response - "it's the victims fault". She is right about rape myths maintaining views of social order. Humans embrace what makes us comfortable, regardless of truth. It's clear to anyone with a brain that rape is not a crime of passion but rather one of violence and the author makes this clear for those who don't already know it.

This book shows the rest of us what rape is like from numerous examples of modern women facing Medieval minds on the matter, painting the event on the inside of our skull. Once done, anger clouds our view but the author does, finally, keep us on track to recovery and not for us but for the survivor. Despite indicting males through sweeping generalizations this book is likely to assist those in need, hopefully without additional damage by the author's personal axe to grind.

I read this book after an experience that I had in college. It was very easy to read and also informative. "Free of the shadows" is a great book for anyone who has experienced sexual assault. It is also a good book for family and friends to read who are trying to help a love one get through a difficult time. I loaned the copy I had to a friend, who in turn loaned it to a friend. I have been looking for a copy of this book for years! Ever bookstore that I went to told me that they couldn't order it. They said it was unavailable. I am very happy to see that this very resourceful book is still in print.

A Must for sexual violence victims or close friends!.......1999-03-27

This book is fantastic. My friend was raped, and I wanted to get her a book that wouldn't scare her but would answer her questions thoroughly. This entire book is a series of VERY helpful questions and answers grouped by topic in chapters. A good book for raising self-esteem and helping get on with life. I agree that it is definately NOT scary to read, and definately one of the more gentle books to read. This is an especially helpful book in my case where my friend believes it's her fault, when it really wasn't. It helped a LOT!!

Very good for rape or sexual assault survivors.......1998-12-07

At first I thought it was overly simplistic. But I think its like that for people to be able to read it immediatly after a rape. Anyway, I think its very good. As rape tends not to be something that is openly discussed amongst even close female friends, (for me anyhow) it gives the opportunity to outline some pretty basic guidelines which- sadly just arn't discussed as freely as they should be. Very good. I thought I was pretty aware, but this reinforced and highlighted perspectives that lurk in the mind, but werent addressed. Surprisingly informative. Made me realize how far reaching the effects of the rape were and how recovery from the effects of the rape were just as important as recovering from the rape/assault itself. If you are on the recieving end of unwanted sexual attention, this is a great book. I have found that there seem to be very few books about rape, which is surprising, as I have always found rapes and assaults to be far too commonplace in this society. I think the word rape puts a lot of people off, because they think it always refers to something quite extreme or violent, but sexual assaults are often not 'OTT', but can be just as scarring. -meaning the act itself is one of violence, but the rapist will not always beat people up or yell etc,. It might be a threatening act, but be equqlly as damaging to the psyce as a more voilent rape scenario.

Tremendously helpful to rape survivors and their loved ones.......1998-08-06

This book was a god-send when I was recovering from my experience with rape and I have recommended it to countless others in the crisis intervention work that I do with other survivors. It is one of the best books available for explaining the after-math of rape to survivors and to their friends and family. This book is NOT SCARY TO READ. Far less likely to trigger fear and panic responses in survivors (especially recent survivors) than many on the market. The content is honest and comprehensive but not graphic or anecdotal. The organization of the book is such that even someone suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (whose powers of concentration may be significantly diminished) can read and digest it relatively easily - the sections are very short and the type is large. Each chapter also includes "for the friends and family" sections, which give invaluable advice about how loved ones can support the survivor and take care of themselves as well. T! his book was the first "person" to tell me that what I was experiencing was a normal reaction to what had happened to me and that I wasn't going crazy. It's a very important book for anyone who is recovering from rape or anyone who cares about someone who is.

A metropolitan lover.......2007-02-07

Having lived a half block from one of the Philly shops while going to school, I was thrilled when I saw this book on their shelf one Christmas. I immediately bought it and took it home, knowing that when I left town, it would help with my craving for their perfect danish. Like another reviewer, one of the first recipes that I tried was the oatmeal cookie. What a disappointment. The cookie is overly sweet and bakes crisp, not thick and soft with a crunchy exterior like the cookie sold in the bakery. Fortunately, that is the only recipe that I tried that doesn't come out well. The sourdough starter works beautifully and the country wheat loaf is superb. I only wish that the authors had included both weights and volumes as any bread baker knows, weights tend towards the more accurate measure. I even tried the danish one fateful day, and once they came out of the over, I was transported back to Philly, sitting in the park and discussing life with friends early in the morning before class.
I conclusion, I really enjoy this cookbook and with some minor improvements in a second addition (weights, tune up the oatmeal cookie, include the "metro" cookie) it would easily be the book I reach for most frequently.

I have to respond given Ms. Bassoff's disappointment. Recipes are not to be followed exactly, they give an idea of what ingredients are used. Also, some of these recipes are the ones that were original versions of what is now sold. Beside the fact that I live a couple of blocks from the Rittenhouse Square Metropolitan and can actually buy the products there (or any of the other Philly locations), I have bought several copies of the book to give as gifts and one for myself to make some of my favs (e.g., lentil salad, vinagrette dressing, and tapanade). The versions made are not exactly what you get at Metropolitan, but Ms Bassoff can order the cookies through Metropolitan's 877 number if she wants the exact thing (metropolitan also has a website).

Disappointed.......2004-06-07

Metropolitan's Oatmeal Raisin cookies at the bakery in Philly may be great, but the recipe in the book is atrociously sweet. I sent an email to the bakery and the publisher about the problem. At least the publisher answered and said that they'd get back to me. After four months and two follow-ups, I'm still waiting for a reply. Considering the attitude, I can't trust the other recipes enough to even try them.

Excellent history, but not enough pictures!.......2001-09-02

This excellent history of Jean Schlumberger and his amazing jewelry is very fine in every respect save one: there aren't enough pictures! Specifically, there aren't enough color pictures. Never one to stick solely to diamonds, Schlumberger made piquant and imaginative use of a wide array of colored gemstones. It's a disappointment that we get to see so many of these creations herein only in sketch or black-and-white photo form. The pieces which are shown in color are blazingly beautiful and intricately detailed--Schlumberger at his very best. All in all, an unevenly enjoyable book.

A fascinating museum catalog with a hard back cover and with an enchanting dust cover, but very lacking of text about a collection of Jean Schlumberger's extraordinary jewels. Had this catalog included more vignettes or even the provenance's of the jewels portrayed, as it does of Diana Vreeland's brooch, and how she propped it up on her night stand to admire, I would have found this book more enriching. Had I not recognized the drawing of Elizabeth Taylor's `Night of the Iguana' brooch, I would have not known the famous lady who had been presented this Schlumberger treasure by the late Richard Burton. As a fine jeweler of eighteen years, I am as anxious to know and to pass on to my clients how other people's jewels have added enjoyment and meaning to their lives. Jewels are more than art, they are symbols of love and affection, and often they are the only highly valued heirlooms that are passed on from one generation to another. Hence Jewels also represent our immortality and how sad when the stories of those who wore them are unknown to the heirs. This museum catalog of a 1996 Schlumberger exhibition in Paris doesn't give us any titillating provenance's as does Judy Rudoe's "Cartier 1900-1939" exhibition text nor how this important master's creations enriched the collector lives.

If you're fascinated by what the authors term 'rogue architecture', this book is even more compusory owning than its previous editions! This definitive folly-hunter's guide now is clearly broken down by British counties, and even better, now has an Ordinance Survey map reference for each of its three-dimensional eccentricies, so there should be no more futile driving up back lanes in quest of the architecturally absurd. A book to live in the glove compartment of your car - when you're not gloating over its extensive photos and engaging text in the anticiaption of planning more folly-hunts!
