Unexpected Turns.......2007-06-27
I enjoyed this book a great deal. There were numerous twists that kept me reading. I had trouble putting it down. If you enjoy romance with the unexpected, this is a must read for you.
A breath of fresh air........2007-05-16
This book is so very different from any other book I have read from Catherine Anderson. Bethany is the only heroine to have such a life-changing physical handicap. Also, there's no murder case to solve, which makes it different, but not worse.
Bethany and Ryan fall in love immediately. However, Bethany thinks Ryan is just humoring her, and Ryan is confused of why Bethany avoids him. Bethany eventually convinces Ryan to agree for them to be just friends.
But for a month straight, Ryan sets to the task of thoroughly seducing her. Meanwhile, working on his ranch, to make it the perfect home for the future Mrs. Ryan Kendrick.
He does everything he could possibly do to make Bethany happy, but when he shows it to her, she gets furious. He's forced to admit that friendship was never on his mind, and he convinces her to stay. They set off on a wonderful relationship, in the end are forced to overcome the biggest bump in their relationship, and end with a happy ending.
This sounds cliché, I'm aware, but I love this book to bits, and I hope you do too.
I most definitely recommend this one.
Phantom Waltz C Rating from the Lenster.......2007-05-12
I did like that one of the main characters was a paraplegic and that the story emphasizes her attractiveness, courage, and capability. It is great to have a story in which a handicapped person is shown as having a full, happy life despite a tragic accident. However, the story was so sugary sweet, that the author lost me about half way through. I was creeped out by the dwelling on orgasms and overdone descriptions of intercourse. It was also highly unrealistic, suggesting that all or most paraplegics can have lives with no limitations whatsoever. It is insulting to those paraplegics who cannot void, who canot climax or bear children, by suggesting that a person needs those things to be fulfilled or happy. I also didn't like that the man in the story was perfect in every way. This book is not one of her best, but overall, Catherine Anderson is a good writer and I enjoy her unconventional relationship books.
Phantom Waltz.......2007-01-18
One of my favorites! Catherine's stories can touch your heart and leave you with a feeling of warmth. I enjoy every one of her stories and can never wait for the next one! I highly recommend anything she writes!!!

Customer Reviews:
Fun, Light Cozy Début.......2006-07-17
In the 1st book in the Candlemaking Mystery series, we meet Harrison Black, the new owner of At Wick's End, a candle shop in North Carolina. His great-aunt Belle has just died, and being her only relative, Harrison has inherited both the shop and the entire building in which it resides. He immediately quits his dead-end job as a computer salesman, and moves to the small town to start his new life. Unfortunately, Harrison knows nothing about candles, and has to rely on his aunt's employee and friend, Eve, to teach him as he works alongside her. He soon starts to realize that something is wrong when he discovers that Belle's apartment had been searched before he arrived, and he cannot shake the feeling that his great-aunt's death was not an accident. Harrison works hard to learn both the business and the inner-workings of the close knit community, and quickly figures out that one of his new acquaintances has a lot to hide...and would be willing to kill to keep hidden.
This was a fun, light start to an interesting cozy series and I really enjoyed the characters and the setting. Reading many books of the genre, I normally stick to female protagonists, but really enjoyed the character of Harrison in this book. It was also interesting to learn some aspects of the candlemaking business, and I liked the way that the ending went along with the overall theme. I am looking forward to reading more of these light, quick reads in this interesting series.
The next book in the series is called "Snuffed Out". Enjoy!
Another promising series.......2005-11-09
I enjoyed this book - the characters were developed well, and that made me care about them. The details show that the author actually does know something about making candles, too. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series. Not a terribly long book, but that's ok - sometimes I get tired of reading by the pound!
trade to learn.......2005-09-19
Harrison Black has inherited his Aunt Belle's candle shop - and the small mall in which it is located, River's Edge. He moves into her former apartment on premises and learns her trade, meets her friends, and uncovers her secrets. But someone has some secrets to hide - like Aunt Belle's fatal accident. The writer has created an interesting world with likeable - and not-so-likeable - characters. Snuffed Out is next in the series, followed by Death Waxed Over. Pleasant reads, I think, and a mall I'd like to visit!
Charming and piquant cozy - .......2005-08-13
This is truly a charming cozy mystery which draws the reader right through the door and into the candle-making shop, where all sorts of things come to pass. I particularly enjoyed the young man Harrison Black who is the main character. He's not exactly bumbling, but not always overly swift, either. However, once he gets his feet on the ground in his new surroundings, he does begin to better process and understand the events swirling around him.
An orphan, Harrison was mostly raised by his Great-Aunt Belle Black, who had purchased (with the help of the local bank) an old building on the bank of a river in North Carolina. She called it River's Edge, and peopled it with a variety of small shops and offices. In addition to her candle-making shop At Wick's End, she made an apartment for herself on the second floor. When she is found dead in the shop, Harrison inherits everything.
Although he has little of his own, he's not exactly sure that he wants to pick up and move to River's Edge. However, Aunt Belle has stipulated he must live there and try to make it work for five years, or else he loses everything. Harrison has bounced from job to job, has no particular love interest at the moment, so why not? And away he goes.
As he meets the various tenants, he begins to wonder about Belle's death. Was it the accident it looked like, or could it have been something else. After several strange things happen to him, Harrison becomes rather paranoid about his close neighbors. He patiently builds up a case against each of them, only to have it all dissolve into nothing. Finally, however, he guesses right and just happens to have a handy (and most unusual) weapon available at the right time.
The characters are all engaging, and will certainly prompt the reader into wanting to know more about them. The plot was more than sufficient to keep me turning the pages, and although I did occasionally get a twinge of `it was -`, turns out it wasn't, after all. I'm looking forward to the next venture at River's Edge.
Did I read the same book as the other reviewers?.......2005-04-01
I honestly thought this book read like a first novel, and not a particularly good one at that. I think I'll try reading one of the later ones in the series to see if the author's writing has improved, but I was not impressed with this one. It was good enough for me to read it (I'll quit reading really bad books) but it seemed rather amateurish to me.
This is the first book of a series. A woman who owns a candle shop dies at the beginning of the book -- murdered by someone who she was insisting go to the police. As it turns out, she also ownsd the building that the shop is in -- the building is a refurbished riverside industrial building with an apartment for the owner on the top floor -- and her grand-nephew inherits all, but only if he makes a 5-year serious effort to make a going concern of the business. He knows nothing about candlemaking but he's in a dead-end job and welcomes an alternative. He quickly suspects that his great-aunt's death was not an accident and decides one of the tenants in the building is probably the killer.
This is in the genre of "cozy" mysteries -- the reader can fantasize about living in this cozy community in a beautiful mountain location with a job that would sound ideal to many readers. I suspect that this is the appeal of this book. The mystery itself isn't very well written, and I was way ahead of the "detective" (the grand-nephew) for most of the book. If you like a well-plotted, suspenseful mystery, I think you may be disappointed. If you like "cozy", you may well like this book's coziness enough to forgive other weaknesses.

Book Description
This new edition provocatively places SCUM as a classic among The Communist and other radical manifestos.
SCUM Manifesto was considered one of the most outrageous, violent and certifiably crazy tracts when it first appeared in 1968. Valerie Solanas, the woman who shot Andy Warhol, self-published this work just before her rampage against the king of Pop Art made her a household name and resulted in her confinement to a mental institution. But the Manifesto, for all its vitriol, is impossible to dismiss as just the rantings of a lesbian lunatic. In fact, the work has indisputable prescience, not only as a radical feminist analysis light-years ahead of its timepredicting artificial insemination, ATMs, a feminist uprising against under-representation in the artsbut also as a stunning testament to the rage of an abused and destitute woman.
The focus of this edition is not on the nostalgic appeal of the work, but on Avital Ronell's incisive introduction, "Deviant Payback: The Aims of Valerie Solanas." Here is a reconsideration of Solanas's infamous text in light of her social milieu, Derrida's "The Ends of Man" (written in the same year), Judith Butler's Excitable Speech, Nietzsche's Übermensch and notorious feminist icons from Medusa, Medea and Antigone, to Lizzie Borden, Lorenna Bobbit and Aileen Wournos.
Customer Reviews:
A powerful weapon against a phallocentric culture.......2007-10-05
Although Scum Manifesto reads like a bitter rant(which it is), there is much truth in it. "Women don't have penis envy; men have pussy envy." Theories of women as biologically inferior, weak, passive are male projections of their own weakness and passivity: men project their own lack onto women, become obsessed with their manhood and with possessing women so as to cover up and compensate for this lack. The class system was created by men, and operates according to a stereotypically masculine logic that stifles individuality, creativity, spunk. The solution, she says, is not for women to compete alongside men in their soul-destroying institutions, but to destroy the class patriarchal system, create a different kind of economy, fluid and circular as opposed to linear and rote...I don't agree with her essentializing (there are some women who are power-hungry and egocentric, and some free-thinking, independent men who can empathize with others; although, judging from my own experiences and observations, it does seem that men need women way more than women need men, and that women are more reliable, emotionally stronger and better at taking care of business than men, which is why I could never understand all the importance on the father in psychoanalytic theory, when in most families I know- and not just single-parent homes--- the mother is both nurturer and authority figure, father and mother combined) but I do agree with her basic premises: we live in a society that privileges the type of Man that she describes, and it is up to all of us to become Women and change that. This would mean the end of capitalism, not the death of men.
Crazy, but Well Done.......2007-03-20
As a previous reviewer stated, given her background, this is VS's opinion. She explaines her "out-there" philosophies in a very intelligent and well thought out manner. The scary thing is that one finds themselves thinking, "Huh. She makes sense."
The SCUM Manifesto is blatant, in-your-face, irreverantly anti-male. It is also intelligent, well thought out, well organized and clearly written. It is rare that such outlandish philosophies are so well written.
Valerie Loves Men.......2007-01-13
Valerie Solanas loves men. This is an incisive feminist critique of the men in Val's life, and also of men in society generally. She champions the demise of the patriarchal capitalist system in favour of feminist and matriarchal chaos.
I love this book and wish more people had the big hairy balls that Val has to write like this.
Valerie and your followers, I love you.
Readers Digest.......2006-11-18
Read it, and then consider that yes . . . she had every reason to consign half of the human race to to the toilet. If her mother hadn't coupled with a member of that other half, Valerie Solanas never would have existed. Really - - you should read this book, whichever half you belong to.
Brilliant.......2006-08-27
There's a perspective on men that only women who've worked in the sex industry can truly grasp. It's us who see men as they truly are- not trying to impress a boss, not trying to land a wife, but when they are free to express who they truly are. And it isn't pretty. Valerie saw this and Valerie shouted back.
A lot of people may not get this or think it extreme or "crazy". But there are women who will, and to us it's a breath of fresh air.
Revolutionary.

Great screenplay.......2000-03-26
"I Shot Andy Warhol" was an amazing movie with a great screenplay that swept the characters of the film through the surrealism and strangeness of the sixties, and this is the screenplay. It's great how the mental degeneration of the main character is depicted so subtly.

Customer Reviews:
The Chili in this Bowl of Red Book will Put Your Lips on Fire.......2006-10-12
A Bowl of Red is one of ten chili books I refer to when I want to make chili differently than the two recipes I usually use. We have chili a lot in our house and both my Dad and my Mama have their favorite ways of cooking it. I grew up with their recipes and I have documented them in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides" and I hope you take a look at it. Both recipes are delicious, but when you've had them as often as I've had 'em, you sort of yearn for something a bit different. So, once a week, usually on Saturdays, I break out these ten books and search for a chili recipe I either haven't tried, or one I haven't made in a long time. Of course, like all cooks, I fudge a bit with the ingredients, but not all that much. I like to stick pretty close to the recipes, at least the first few times I make it, so I can get an idea of what the writer/recipe maker had intended.
And let me tell you, you'd be surprised at the subtleties there are in a chili recipe. As they say, no two chile recipes were created equal, but the recipes in this book have never let me down. I've got a lot of chili books, have tried a lot of recipes over the years, but the recipes here, like the recipes in my other nine fave books, have been consistently good. You can't go wrong with A Bowl of Red.
A classic book about chili that runs a bit Texas-heavy.......2006-02-28
A Bowl of Red serves as a history of chili, with a few other chapters added as filler (sort of like pinto beans are to a chili purist). According to Tolbert, chili is an American (not Mexican) dish which has its origins in the "chili queen" culture of late-19th century San Antonio. Texas chili is basically ground beef and chile peppers, with optional frijoles on the side; chilli chefs from other parts of the country, such as those who make the "Greek chili" served in Cincinnati and Springfield, will disagree. Tolbert also provides a few chili recipes, but not enough to make this a cookbook. Interesting book, but definitely a one-time read.
It doesn't get any better than this!.......2005-11-05
Frank X. Tolbert's A Bowl of Red is the bible of chili. If you want to cook an authentic bowl of red read this book. If it isn't in this book, you don't need to know it.
Plus, you get a grand essay on blackeyed peas (Now often called Texas Caviar), essays on The Gentleman from Odessa Stew and on Farkleberrys, and much more.
And what more appropriate ending could you have than Bones Hooks' "Chili Prayer"?
An Early Manifesto in the American Food Revolution.......2005-01-05
Frank Tolbert's A Bowl of Red started out as a series of columns in the Dallas News but it's hard to define exactly what this book is in terms of form. It's not really a cookbook but I've made terrific chilis from his suggested recipes. It's not even completely about chili, although it starts out with that classic American (not Mexican) dish. Tolbert starts with a rambling history of the origins of chili in Texas cuisine and uses that as a base for wandering around through southwestern cuisine, famous Texas and southern cooks, ghost towns, European immigrants in Texas, the science of chili, chuck wagon chefs and too many other topics to list. His descriptions of the first several World Series of Chili Cookoffs in Terlingua, Texas read like a combination of the Marx Brothers and P.J.O'Rourke.
It may be hard to believe but this book is hard to put down. It's one of a kind.
A Classic Must-Have.......1999-10-01
This classic is a must-have for the true chili lover and chili historian. It's the book that revived interest in chili.

Customer Reviews:
Great, that's what this Chili Book is.......2006-10-12
The Great Chili Book is one of ten chili books I refer to when I want to make chili differently than the two recipes I usually use.
You can't go wrong with The Great Chili Book.

40 signatures, 40 thousand dollars........2007-05-13
I also rushed out to get this book after reading Steven Weber's Feed Blitz. I am amazed, nay, astounded that a book like this exists. I know very little about football and only know about the Super Bowl from all that publicity about a "wardrobe malfunction", so this book has been very informative to me.
I don't even _have_ a coffee table for it sit on, but I am thinking about putting it near the bunny's cage as he really devours a good book - and several bad ones.
I am considering the experience of one of the other reviewers, hollowing it out with a Dremel and using it for my prized collection of pogs. Now I have to find somebody to lend me a Dremel and a few months mortgage payment so I can create a safe place for my pogs.
and I don't even like football.......2007-05-12
I bought this after reading Steve Weber's glowing review on Feedblitz.
Although I hate football and have never even seen a "Superball" (sic?),I realized this was the chance of a lifetime to purchase a collectible book which will surely appreciate, and soon!
It did break my glass coffee table, however. But that's a small price to pay, doncha think?
Can anyone tell me who the guys pictured in the book are and why they are there?
My copy is unclear on that point.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get rich quick.
Great for what they are.......2007-03-25
I bought two or three for the house, they are perfect for use as an inconspicuous book safe when hollowed out with a Dremel. I keep the most prized portions of my Beanie Baby collection within.
What?.......2007-03-24
I did a little calculating and I figure that if they sell all 20,000 (LIMITED EDITION??) of these for $40,000 each, they make $800 million.
But, the free shipping is killing them. IF they only charged $10,000 shipping, they could make a billion dollars on this book.
Breathtaking.......2007-02-01
Took my breath away.. really!
My dear Norman, the football fan, bought this for the coffee table. Such a lovely conversation piece. Only he won't allow anyone to touch it, let alone read it. I'm afraid he caught me reading it, at 2 AM, the other night, by flashlight. The ensuing battle of words was not pretty.
So, now I rather hate the dam thing. Not to mention the price. We are eating beans and rice for the next few years, until the Visa is paid down. Even though I can't read it, I love to run my finger over the hand-stitched leather edges, when Norman is in the john (sssshhhhh! Don't tell!)
It is really very beautiful.
thanks - have a lovely Superbowl Sunday, Sally

Book Description
The literary study of emotion is part of an important revisionary movement among scholars eager to recast emotional politics for the twenty-first century. Looking beyond the traditional categories of sentiment, sensibility, and sympathy, Jennifer Travis suggests a new approach to reading emotionalism among men. She argues that the vocabulary of injury, with its evaluations of victimhood and its assessments of harm, has deeply influenced the cultural history of emotions.
From the Civil War to the early twentieth century, Travis traces the history of male emotionalism in American discourse. She argues that injury became a comfortable vocabulary--particularly among white middle-class men--through which to articulate and to claim a range of emotional wounds. The debates about injury that flourished in the cultural arenas of medicine, psychology, and the law spilled over into the realm of fiction, as Travis demonstrates through readings of works by Stephen Crane, William Dean Howells, Willa Cather, Henry James, and Edith Wharton. Travis concludes by linking this history to twenty-first-century preoccupations with "pain-centered politics," which, she cautions, too often focuses only on women and racial minorities.

A passion for Metal: Reflections and Techniques of a metal sculptor.......2007-08-10
This book is very readable, not just a look at the pictures. There are many techniques used and discussed, with a new fluxing tool I'd never heard about. I've actually read most of it because of its interesting writing style. The work is high energy and enthusiasticly made.
Cool Read, Hot Art.......2004-10-20
A Passion for Metal is truly an apt title for this book. Mr. Harvey writes with wit and a clarity of thought about his 30-plus years as a sculptor. The book is part instruction manual, part art criticism, and part philosophy text backed by truly beautiful photographs of the work from Harvey Gallery on every page. You can sit down and read it from cover to cover or open it up to random pages and get enjoyment out of it.
If you are a sculptor, an art lover, or just want to know what life is like as a professional sculptor in the present-day, this book is for you.

Book Description
In the summer of 1995, New York artist Elisha Cooper hit the road to capture America with his paint brush.
Fifteen thousand miles and 136 sketches later, his cross-country odyssey resulted in
Off the Road--a visual diary that captures the spirit of places as majestic as Yellowstone and as quaint as Alice, North Dakota.
Beginning with the Manhattan skyline, he heads north through the heart of New England, loops back down through the deep south, breezes past the arid Southwest, hits the California coast, and swings back through the Plains states on his way home to New York City. It's a fifty-day whirlwind tour that includes stop-offs in Friendship, Maine; Intercourse, Pennsylvania; Moss Point, Mississippi; Enid, Oklahoma; Pilar, New Mexico; Hollywood Hills, California; Canby, Oregon; Moose Junction, Wyoming; Chicago, Illinois; and Muskegon, Michigan.
A lovely gift, with full-color art throughout,
Off the Road is sure to delight readers with its whimsical yet perceptive look at America.
Customer Reviews:
Watercolor wonder!.......2002-07-23
I purchased this book at a local bookstore for a friend, and then ended up going back and getting one of my own. It features small watercolors and sketches of American life, as Elisha Cooper travels around the United States. The watercolors are fantastic, and gave me good ideas for my budding hobby, and the book also serves as an unusual guide for travel enthusiasts!

Me and a Guy Named Elvis: My Lifelong Friendship with Elvis Presley
ASIN: 0875167675 |
Book Description
A Manual of Spiritual Teaching and Discipline. THE IMPERSONAL LIFE is the book that Elvis "had been looking for all his life." Why? Because as ALL Elvis biographers tell us, it spoke to him in such a clear understanding voice. It was so dear to Elvis that he began sharing it with the world by giving copies away by the case. It was ground zero for his self-explorationa and spiritual awareness. Here, Elvis found food for his soul, and he devoured it. We aptly call this the Graceland Edition of The Impersonal life "The Little Book in which Elvis Found the Light." Students of spirituality continue to find it so.
Customer Reviews:
A diamond of a little book (will move YOU like Elvis!).......2002-06-11
The Impersonal Life is being marketed by DeVorss & Co as "the Little Book in Which Elvis found the light." And for good reasons: it's a sound marketing move, it gets more people to read it....and this potent little book will truly help you find the (inner/spiritual) light if you are even slightly seeking it.
This book has little to do with Elvis, except that he loved it second only to the Bible, handed out hundreds of copies to friends...and it enlightened and inspired him. The Impersonal Life was written in the early twentieth century by the enigmantic Joseph S. Brenner, who wrote and published it under the pen name ANONYMOUS.
So what is it? Firstly, it is definitely a little but very profound book. DeVorss' special Graceland-authorized edition (with a young and thin Elvis on the cover) is tiny enough to carry in your pants or jacket pocket, purse, carry on luggage etc.
Secondly, it's basically an early 20th century version of Conversations With God, although it does not venture near some of the controversial areas that the later (and I think inferior) volumes of that contemporary book did.
The Impersonal Life is also seems like a first-person work(the author speaking as that spark of divinity he contends is within all of us) that could have been written by the great Ernest Holmes, author of the landmark Science of Mind writings. Its core idea is that your mind is linked to a Higher Power so a "Thinker is a Creator...(who) lives in a world of his own conscious creation."
Brenner, writing as the voice of God and appealing and explaining to each reader's own divine spark, writes that "every thing, every condition, every event that ever transpired was first an idea in the mind. It was by desiring, by thinking, and by speaking forth the Word, that these ideas came into visible manifestation."
Why did Elvis care and be influenced by The Impersonal Life -- and why should YOU? This little book, with each of its words as potent as literary dynamite blasting away earthly mental clutter and worries, stresses the importance of belief and nonshakeable FAITH...and argues that inspiration and intuitive flashes just don't happen. There's a reason. And if you follow these impersonal flashes you can live an impersonal life....uplifted from the personal human concerns and preoccupations, better focused on spiritual concerns and increasingly empowered with increasingly documentable spiritual power.
The words that comforted Elvis & ME!.......2002-02-12
This is the Elvis that few people have ever seen or known about--the Spiritual side. I truely enjoyed reading the SAME words that comforted Elvis in his times of need. The words contained with in this small, but powerful little book spoke out to me as if IT was written just for me. This must have been how Elvis felt while reading it too. This book is like an instruction manual directly from God, speaking from within. I will keep this book and read it many times as a reminder of the power of God, which is found within. It makes a great gift for those who are interested in the spirual side of Elvis, but most importantly for those who want to discover more of the spiritual side of themselves.
The book that caused Elvis to hear his call.......2001-08-02
Of course I knew about Elvis but I hadn't read much about him. I wouldn't call myself an "Elvis Fan." Then I happened to get a chance to visit Graceland one day and after that visit, I knew that Elvis answered his life's call and was compelled by Spirit to be the legend that he was. So what would influence Elvis to become so great?
The answer is in this book. The book is not about Elvis. It has a little introduction about how Elvis used this book. "The Impersonal Life" was actually first published anonymously in 1916. The author has been discovered but little is known about the author. Elvis bought this book by the case and gave it out freely to friends and acquaintences. He read this book over and over and over, underlining and putting notes in the margins. He absorbed the meaning of the book and you know that is true after you read it.
The book's content is very spiritually fulfilling. It does not include religous language, symbolism or dogma but it is very spiritual. "I AM" is speaking to the reader. On page 122 it reads "I may be expressing through you beautiful symphonies of sound, color or language, that manifest as music, art or poetry, according to mortal terminology, and which so affects others as to cause them to acclaim you as one of the great ones of the day."
Does that not say what Elvis was about? This book contains the words that caused Elvis to hear and understand his call. The book is small and very easy to read. It is rich with Spirit speaking and it compels you to live out your life answering your call, whatever that may be. Wow! I am glad I discovered this book. I, too, will read it over many times. It's definitely worth more than its weight in gold.
