Hellenga brings back characters from his bestselling The Sixteen Pleasures and introduces many compelling new onesincluding the elephant, who paintsin a novel that illuminates our deepest concerns: love and death, marriage and family, and the mysterious tug of beauty on the human heart.

Philosophy Made Simple.......2007-09-23
A delightful story of a man who has reached retirement age but who launches himself into space with no safety net, yet he (sort of) lands on his feet. Quite unmoored from his background, he nonetheless has enough of a sense of self to make friends, new loves, and adventure where he has never gone before. The end is elegiac, but that may just be me: I'm a sucker for romantic endings.
A spiritual letdown.......2007-01-09
Although I have great admiration for Robert Hellenga's writing which is beautiful, after finishing Philosophy Made Simple, I was left with an emptiness and sadness for his character, Rudy. Rudy was so close to finding the fullness of life through the understanding and acceptance of his circumstances and the way he respected others with whom he lived and experienced life. He was the greatest of the philosophers, not those of history who cast aside the miracle of life. As his daughter Margot did when she bought an impulsive ticket to Italy, Rudy's character would have been much better served if he had closed the door to the past, left Texas behind and filled his life with beauty and love and bought an implusive ticket to India.
A Solid Narrative and a Jaunty Exploration of Ideas.......2006-12-11
In Philosophy Made Simple, Robert Hellenga wisely places plot and characterization above idea, to pave the way for a reality beyond forms.
The plot unfolds capably and simply--a 1960s retired widower elects to sell his Illinois home and buy an avocado farm in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. He encounters adventures and misadventures, seeks love and meaning, and searches for a moment of true insight.
Yet the novel is not bound to the sum of its parts. This is not one of those "Egg and I" novels about a misplaced person having comic adventures in strange territory, nor is it "A Confederacy of Dunces" in its its exploration of a fellow exploring personal philosophy. It's instead a gentle, flowing story, whose moments of amusement come in well-hit singles rather than in swings for the fences. The novel successfully evokes the late 1960s and contains a nearly dead-ringer feel for the Mission/McAllen area of south Texas.
Mr. Hellenga's book engages the reader who seeks an old-fashioned "good read", but it's not at all a hidebound work out of fashion. It's instead
light reading in the best sense--breezy, well-thought-out, and a delight.
I recommend Philosophy Made Simple for those who may not want their philosophy too elaborate, but instead suffused into the ether surrounding the reader by a novelist's knowing pen. Rather than write another "wasted life" retirement story, Mr. Hellenga celebrates the life in all of us, despite having a skeptic's practiced eye and a satirist's ready chuckle. This is a fine book indeed.
Story Without Answers.......2006-08-22
This book flowed along most easily, and there were many places where I stopped and give good pause for thought. Given the title, that's to be expected. But it lacked impact near the end and I just can't classify this as anything beyond mediocre in many respects. Still, an enjoyable read for those trying to understand life "thus far" from mid-life vantage point. This book just takes the right reader and is not intended for everyone.
A very fun little book.......2006-06-15
Philosophy Made Simple is a nice little read, very pleasant and a little poignant. The plot if amply described in other reviews, so I'll add just a few quick non-plot thoughts about this book.
First, it is very pleasant. No points are belabored, the prose is clean, simple and straightforward. As Mark Twain said about his own works (perhaps not accurately!) this book has not a single word more than it needs. It is refreshing to read a book that strives to communicate a weighty philosophical point of view that is so unassuming.
As to the philosophical point... I almost wish that the book gave me a little more help along the way. I felt that each chapter tried to make a philosophical point by demonstrating it in the story rather than beating you over the head with it, which I appreciated, but I frequently finished a chapter feeling like whatever it was I was supposed to come away with... I had missed.
Until the end. At the end, all of a sudden, kind of out of the blue, the philosophy is laid out in all its naked glory. The revelation is made and all the strands come together. It is an interesting philosophy, and the road to it is very pleasant to stroll along. I would have liked a few more signposts along the way!
But none of this is to complain. I liked the book a lot and while I wouldn't say it leads to major revelation it was fun to read, exceedingly pleasant, and in the end provided a point of view that I happen to embrace very much - which was nice!
Book Description
Together for the first time in a single volume -- the two critically acclaimed Bookman crime novels that helped inspire America's passion for modern first-edition book collecting and that belong on every bookshelf.
Includes "The Book Collector," advice and special tips from John Dunning on collecting rare books.
BOOKED TO DIE
Denver cop Cliff Janeway probably knows as much about books as he does about homicide. His living room resembles an adjunct to the public library. He's aware that some Stephen King first editions can bring more money than most Mark Twain firsts, and a copy of Raymond Chandler's Lady in the Lake is worth more than $1,000. And he realizes that, contrary to popular belief, "older" doesn't necessarily mean "more valuable."
He also knows that valuable volumes can be hidden in plain view among otherwise ordinary book collections. It's not easy to find such books, but some people seem to have an extraordinary talent for honing in on the treasures.
Such a man is bookscout Bobby Westfall. Bobby once earned $900 in a single weekend and has generally spotted enough valuable books to keep himself and his beloved cats fed and housed.
Now Bobby is dead, murdered at the witching hour on Friday the thirteenth, his body dumped under a ladder in a dark alley. It's not a good end for a superstitious man. Janeway is sure he knows who did it. But can he catch him? And, in the process, will Janeway's own life change forever?
THE BOOKMAN'S WAKE
The story starts and ends, aptly, with a very special book: a 1969 edition of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven, published by the tiny, prestigious Grayson Press of North Bend, Washington. The Grayson bibliography mentions no such edition. If, indeed, it exists, it could be worth a fortune to the right collector. It's the kind of book somebody might kill for. In fact, somebody probably already has.
Ex-Denver cop Janeway is happily at work selling rare and used books when former police colleague Clydell Slater arrives with an offer. Slater runs a detective agency and he wants Janeway to go to Seattle to pick up a young female fugitive and deliver her to Taos, New Mexico. The woman is wanted for burglary and assault. More to the point, as far as Janeway's concerned, she may also have in her possession a stolen copy of the 1969 Grayson Press Raven, taken when she ransacked a Taos home.
The rare-book angle gets to Janeway every time. He could turn down thousands of dollars in fees, but he can't say no to The Raven.
Janeway signs on to the case because of a book, but he stays because of a vulnerable young woman. He will discover not only her painful story but the poignant tale of a once-great small press, where paper and ink became beautiful books in the hands of a master craftsman.

Classes in Book Collecting.......2007-09-23
While BOOKED TO DIE and it's immediate follow-up BOOKMAN'S WAKE are not particularly colorful or memorable they give the outsider painless lessons in book collecting. If you think that collectable books are only the old and battered ones, you definitely need to read these books. If you've never heard of a book scout, who knows... you may discover your next career.
The author is a servicable writer with a disciplined style. The characters are little more than sketches. The stories about a crime-solving rare books dealer move along but not at a heart-pounding pace. The motives are based on the dynamics of book collecting -- and how dynamic can that be?
The first is set in Denver -- the author's home town. The second is set in my home town of Seattle. Not much of a sense of the two environments emerge. It's like seeing the world from the window of a bookstore. And for some of us, that's just fine.
Great Diversion for Bookmen & Librarians.......2007-02-07
Both of these detective stories have received loud kudos as genre fiction. For me the real delight is in the wealth of accurate booklore of the antiquarian book trade that they contain. The stories are certainly page-turners and tightly plotted (The Bookman's Wake is a little byzantine at times with some contrived tension-building delays). The book trade and bookstore atmosphere, however, is so authentic that the line between factual information and cleverly constructed fictional situation is intriguingly blurry!
John Dunning's Booked to Die and Bookman's Wake.......2006-11-10
Dunnings style and easy reading vocabulary make his books great relaxing and interesting material. He is fast becoming one of my favorite authors and I highly recommend his work.
Good Stories.......2006-07-27
I've always loved being told or reading good stories, and these are good ones.
A Great Intro to the "Bookman" series.......2006-07-11
I was told about Dunning's mystery series by a good friend -- and fellow book lover -- and found this omnibus edition of the first two novels a great way to get a feel for the author's storytelling skills (they're remarkable), the main character's back story (it's quite interesting), and read two interesting mysteries involving one of my favorite pastimes -- browsing for treasures in used bookstores. Dunning is obviously quite knowledgeable about the used book market, and he has written a gritty, engrossing, and at times amusing account of the trials and travails of Cliff Janeway, a former cop turned used book seller. If you are in anyway interested in books -- as a reader and as a collector -- this series is sure to please and certain to provide hours of edification of the fine, wonderful, world of owning collectable books.
About these two novels . . .
Dunning's first novel, Booked to Die introduces us to his indominable lead character, Cliff Janeway. He's a tough, honest, principled cop in Denver who has a passion for collecting books and a long-standing personal vendetta against a local thug, Jackie Newton. When a local vagrant is found beaten to death, Jackie Newton appears to be the most likely suspect, but Janeway finds he's unable prove anything. After a violent clash with Newton, Janeway realizes that his career as a cop is over, and decides to open a used bookstore. Janeway is happy and even hires a young woman to be his assistant, Miss Pride. But, his comfortable complaciency is suddenly shattered when Janeway discovers Miss Pride and a ne'r-do-well bookscout summarily executed in his store, and he's certain that Newton's behind it.
In a good mystery, nothing is ever as simple as it seems on page 200 . . . By the end of the novel, Janeway cleverly discovers who was behind the brutal deaths of three people and why, and even more importantly, he has won this reader's admiration as a top-notch, cop-turned-bookseller that you want to get to know even better.
Which is why this volume is such a treat. Finish one novel and there's a second one immediately after it. In The Bookman's Wake, Janeway must stay several steps ahead of a murderous thug who is after a previously unknown rare, limited edition of The Raven, by Edgar A. Poe. This novel is a vivd portrayal of genius turn to murderous hubris. The high-stakes risks taken by Janeway and his associates are duly rewarded in the end, and the reader of this novel will be, too.

Important notes.......2005-09-25
Nuwisha are a blast to play, but if you're hoping for all you need to play them, this book is Necessary, but not sufficient. You're also going to need the players guide to Werewolf, since the Nuwisha book doe NOT contain all of their gifts. NOR does it contain creation rules. It does however, list their Totems, a few gifts, and Nuwisha Only merits and flaws. It also has their creation mythos, and a few secrets. AND AS AN ADDED BONUS, It has Old-man-manyskins in it. Yay, huh?
Dissapointing.......2005-05-25
This could have been so much better...I like the humor element, but there isn't enough depth to the book, or the nuwisha. I'll stick with the Kitsune and Ananasi as my changing breeds.
A Good Book.......2003-02-04
This book is loads of fun, But is a little sketchy on charter creation.
Even if you don't play a Nuwisha, I recomend this book for pure entertainment value.
Gotta love those guys.......2003-01-05
These are the ultimate Ragabash of the Changing Breeds. Everything you possibly need to know about them is in this book, including ideas on how to sneak them into a werewolf pack.
It's a little skinny, and could use an update.
If nothing else, ask your GM to borrow Nuwisha gifts and traits for use with your Ragabash werewolf; they should mesh well.
An ode to Luna........1999-06-21
White-Wolf really did justice to every ones most loved and hated shape-shifters, the nuwisha. I really loved the art and information presented in whole! This book is a must for any white-Wolf RPer who enjoys to play a wild character!

Book Description
Writing from personal and professional experience, Aaron Kipnis shares both the riveting story of his own troubled youth-and how he turned himself around-and the successful approaches he has used to help "bad boys" become good men. Angry Young Men offers specific, practical advice for parents, teachers, counselors, community leaders, and justice professionals-- everyone who wants to help at-risk boys become strong, productive, caring, and compassionate men.
"Angry Young Men is an extremely important book that is especially timely now during our current epidemic of violence by and against boys and young men . . . Aaron Kipnis has seen deeply, not only into the souls of troubled boys and adolescents, but also into those aspects of the spirit of our culture and our epoch that have turned an unprecedentedly large portion of our boys and young men into the perpetrators and victims of violence."--From the Foreword by James Gilligan, M.D., Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

A Real Page Turner.......2006-01-15
I first checked this book out at the library somewhat reluctantly. It looked like a text book, in other words, necessary information but rather dull and difficult to read through. I couldn't have been more wrong! It was absolutely excellent information from someone who grew up as one of the boys from "the wrong side of the tracks." I am aspiring to be a Juvenile Probation Officer and this book was just so informative. It is a must read for anyone working with or raising young men.
We've needed this book for a long, long time........2001-09-02
This book is a moving interweaving of autobiographical anecdotes, patiently accumulated facts (did you know that more is spent in the US on prisons than on college educations? See malepsych.com for more such data), and concrete suggestions for understanding our national epidemic of angry youth and doing something constructive about it.
Don't let the impotence of current national solutions and quick-fixes ("just say no"; "bring your child to work day"; etc. ad nauseum) convince you that the problem of angry young men is insoluble. It's not. In fact, the suggestions offered by the author throughout the book are relevant, doable, sensible, and verifiable. Grouping the outside forces that make for violence into six Pathways to Prison, Dr. Kipnis goes on to explain what they look and feel like from inside the young rager--and it is that part we sorely lack in our sorry stabs at "explaining" youth violence from the outside, its perpetrators objects to be warehoused for a profit as slave labor.
Most of the violent males I've counseled have already done jail or prison time--and yet even with them, listening carefully, confronting them firmly and respectfully with the consequences of their behavior, educating them about basics like managing addictions and painful emotions, and showing them that strong males can be gentle, patient, and nonviolently assertive gave our counseling center (Cornerstone) close to a 90% success rate (meaning: 90% men who completed the full program never reviolated their probation). I wish I'd had this book available then, for them and for me. So much more can be done with young men before they ever get to this point!
Dr. Kipnis is President of the Fatherhood Coalition, a nonprofit that among other things encourages fathers to be an active, available part of their childrens' lives. I can tell you that of the hundreds of violent men I've worked with, not one--not one!--had had an adequate, let alone loving, relationship with his father. Given our country of unavailable dads (and moms, of course), do you begin to see why more young men are imprisoned in the US than were locked up in pro-aparteid Africa?
This and other dynamics behind the immense problem of young male violence are explained in this book with clarity, erudition, and personal experiences convincing far beyond the usual theoretical models.
The Talmud talks about the "Master of Return," the man who took the wrong way and then found the right way; in the eyes of God such a man stands higher than even the angels in heaven. One such man has penned this book, as you'll see for yourself when you read it. If you spend any time at all around young males, or if you simply want to understand what's going on in their world, then this resource is indispensable.
A must read for any one who works with young men.......2000-10-01
This book is excellent! I work in a correctional facility and it has really helped me to understand the young men that I work with. I plan on reading it with them and having discussions on the information presented. Many of these young men come from the "5-H club" mentioned in the book. They need people who understand where they have come from and what they have gone through. I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished for their crimes, but I feel we need to find alternative solutions for these young men, rather than putting them in an adult prison where they only learn new and more dangerous crimes from the hardened criminals.
I needed this book.......2000-03-20
I teach remedial English and reading at a middle school with a high poverty rate, a 40% latino population, and a big gang problem. All of my students are Latino, most are boys, and most are constantly in trouble at school, if not with the law. This book doesn't have all the answers, but it went a long way towards helping me understand where my troubled boys are coming from and why they act the way they do.
First Hand Experience.......2000-01-24
With all the sensational press about the dangerous young men in our schools and neighborhoods, it is refreshing to read Kipnis's first hand account of what contributes to the despair and hostility in troubled adolescent boys. His book has specific suggestions for addressing the problems he identifies in clear and compelling language. This book, and "Raising Cain" by Dan Kindlon amd Michael Thompson have been the best insights into the life of boys that I have read this past year.

interesting ideas, not so easy to read.......2006-06-22
I just received this book and while I have not had time to experiment the the recipes, I have to say that I find it a bit difficult to read through. Don't get me wrong, the author is very engaging and I am looking forward to trying out the recipes, it is just that the font for the recipe titles is not quite browsing-friendly.
A wonderful resource.......2000-07-14
Lydie's cookbooks are ALWAYS perfectly done -- every recipe is a gem. I've been to her cooking school in NYC, and can attest to this woman's incredible knowledge, skill, and ability to teach. Fabulous. Check out her other cookbooks, too...

somewhat pleased.......2007-02-14
The book was what I wanted. But it was slightly bent and twisted when it arrived. The package didn't look to be damaged just the book.
Dissapointed.......2007-01-03
I went with this book because of the name and when I started to get into my cards which there are about 3 thousand of them I relized that this books only has specific years of specific brands and sets. I started off looking for 1992 Dunruss which I have the complete set and they are not in it for example, then i wanted to check my Leaf cards and it jumps from 1946 up to I beliebe 1999 or 2001 either way Over 50 years not listed in Leaf. I will not go into what is in there for upperdeck. in short if i were looking for a book with a close to complete set of prices for cards it would not be this book. Spend your money on another book and get what you need.
DISAPPOINTED WITH THE DOCTOR.......2006-05-14
I recently received this book. I was surprised to see how many brand issues were omitted. Try to find various years of Stadium Club or Fleer Ultra for example. Many are missing. I am not sure if this was intentional or accidental. This book still has a lot of value, but not Dr. Beckett and company's best effort. I would look elsewhere for more complete and thorough compilation.

A MUST for De Palma fans!.......2004-04-21
There aren't too many books out there on De Palma, so when I saw this one I was very excited. I must say, I wasn't disappointed when I got it. Great interviews that are very informative, covering the majority of his films throughout his fascinating career. De Palma comes off as a very intelligent, humourous man, and his thoughts on films and directing are refreshingly frank and wise. A must-own companion to "The Devil's Candy" and "Double De Palma", this book should be on every film buff's nightstand. Except the ones who suck.
