This book absolutely amazing and unique. Sure there are 3 books so far from him, all with the same postcard concept, but each book is direct and revealing. I found myself looking into my life and relationships and thinking that the post cards are saying and showing exactly what I felt/remember feeling. The pages are beautiful and colorful along with the words and writing that somehow display exactly what the writer was feeling. Even if you only read a few pages every once in a while, it will ground and humble you, pick you up, and make you want to be a better person. Truly amazing.

Maiotti has done a wonderful job presenting some of the practical techniques of painters both famous (Degas, Caravaggeo, Cezanne) and not-so-famous (Volpedo, Fontenesi, Maimeri) with examples and text explaning each study. Covers the basics such as paints, supplies, and color technique as well as chapters on the figure, the nude, landscapes and much more. A concise and practical series of art school lessons and a great way to learn techniques used by the masters of oil painting.

Use tips from the novelists? Let my computer measure my results? Sure.

So I bought this book with a skeptical eye. Once I tried the business about editing to the five number standards, I thought it felt mechanical. But I stuck with it.

And what do you know? I soon began to feel an attitude change. I did write better in the first hour, just as promised.

Bottom line, and I should have put this into the top line, if I'd taken the author's advice: This is the best book on writing since the Elements of Style. Don't take my word for it. Use it and see for yourself.

Creative corporate writer.......2003-10-22

I picked up this book knowing that I could always use improvement in communicating on the job. I was impressed enough with the book that I purchased extra books and handed them out to the managers in my department. Our lab manager is considering using it as a "manual" for the tech report writers. Most "how to" books tend to be stuffy or boring and I tend to nod off half way through. That is not true of this book. I read it the first time and was entertained enough to finish it within a day or two. Even though I was entertained, I still got more out of that book than I have in the three previous 'improvement' books I have read. I then reread it and gained at least as much information the second time around as I did the first.

I am in a technical field and most of what is written in my area is dry, boring and filled with jargon and verbose prose that hides the real meaning of what is trying to be presented. This book cuts through that meandering mess and spells out a better way clearly and in a manner that makes it interesting and relatively painless to learn.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has to write correspondence of any kind to anyone at any level.

In 1863 the Union capture of Texas was viewed as crucial to the strategy to deny the Confederacy the territory west of the Mississippi and thus to break the back of its military force. Union efforts to cut off the Texas trade were characterized by short, unsuccessful forays, primarily in East and South Texas. Here, Stephen A. Townsend examines one of these, known as the Rio Grande Expedition, which left New Orleans on October 26, 1863.

Townsend carefully traces the actions-and inaction-of the Union forces from the capture of Brownsville, through the advance up the coast with the help of Union Loyalists, until General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the abandonment of all of Texas except Brownsville in March 1864. Townsend analyzes the effects of the campaign on the local populace, the morale and good order of the two armies involved, U.S. diplomatic relations with France, the Texas cotton trade, and postwar politics in the state. He thoughtfully assesses the benefits and losses to the Northern war effort of this only sustained occupation of Texas.

No understanding of the Civil War west of the Mississippi-or its place in the Union strategy for the Deep South-will be complete without this informative study.
