When word got out in 1995 that the U.S. Defense Department and CIA had funded efforts to read people's minds, the news understandably excited all sorts of derision and conspiracy theories. Who would imagine that the story behind the efforts is actually a fascinating tale about the possibilities of human potential? Paul H. Smith tells the story of the U.S. "psychic spying" program in his book Reading the Enemy's Mind. Smith doesn't come across as some flaky new-ager. He was a young U.S. Army intelligence officer and Arab linguist who had no previous interest in extra-sensory perception when he was recruited into the program code-named "Star Gate" in 1983. Over the next seven years, he became one of the army's premier "remote viewers" and the primary author of its training manual on the subject. He also served as a tactical intelligence officer in the 101st Airborne Division in Operation Desert Storm/Shield and got a Master's degree from the Defense Intelligence College.
In Reading the Enemy's Mind, Smith reveals that the military and intelligence communities performed hundreds of experiments and operational intelligence assignments using "remote viewing," the government's term for ESP. The program's first big success came in 1979 when a viewer found a downed Soviet bomber in Africa after other intelligence operatives had failed--a coup praised by President Jimmy Carter. The psychics received target assignments from virtually every U.S. national-security agency, and Smith says they produced numerous positive results. Smith's biggest revelation, however, is that the government research found that almost all people--not merely a gifted few--seem to have the potential of developing ESP skills, with enough practice and a few tips from a pro like Smith. Many readers will no doubt find it hard to know what to make of Reading the Enemy's Mind and whether to believe any of it, but Smith writes with both color and a measured tone that together produce a captivating yarn even for the non-believers out there. --Alex Roslin
Book Description
If you thought The Manchurian Candidate was fiction or John Farris's The Fury, which featured a CIA mind-control program run amok, was the stuff of an overheated imagination, you were sorely mistaken. From behind the cloak of U.S. military secrecy comes the story of Star Gate, the project that for nearly a quarter of a century trained soldiers and civilian spies in extra-sensory perception (ESP). Their objective: To search out the secrets of America's cold war enemies using a skill called "remote viewing." Paul H. Smith, a U.S. Army Major, was one of these viewers. Assigned to the remote viewing unit in 1983 at a pivotal time in its history, Smith served for the rest of the decade, witnessing and taking part in many of the seminal national-security crises of the twentieth century. With the Star Gate secrets declassified and the program mothballed by the Central Intelligence Agency, the story can now be told of the ordinary soldiers drafted onto the battlefield of human consciousness. Using hundreds of interviews with the key players in the Star Gate program, and gathering thousands of pages of documents, Smith opens the records on this remarkable chapter in American military, scientific, and cultural history. He reveals many secrets about how remote viewing works and how it was used against enemy targets. Among these stories are the search for hostages in Lebanon; spying on Soviet directed energy weapons; investigating the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland; tracking foreign testing of weapons of mass destruction; combating narco-trafficking off America's coasts; aiding in the Iranian hostage situation; finding KGB moles in the CIA; pursuing Middle East terrorists; and more.Between the lines in the official records are revelations about unrelenting attempts from within and without to destroy the remote viewing program, and the efforts that kept Star Gate going for more than two decades in spite of its enemies. This is a story for the believer and the skeptic---a rare look at the innards of a top secret program and an eye-opening treatise on the power of the human mind to transcend the limitations of space and time.

Steady, Comprehensive History of Gov't Remote Viewing.......2007-10-07
Reading the Enemy's Mind is a fascinating history of the Star Gate program. I've read accounts of a couple of other former Star Gate participants and they are either sensational and fictionalized (David Morehouse) or short on history (Dale Graff). Paul Smith's account is comprehensive and doesn't make wild claims. His tome is a level-headed treatment of the program. He's very upfront that for every success there are many failures.
Some of my favorite successful remote-viewing stories from Reading the Enemy's Mind include viewing Aldrich Ames - the CIA traitor, the USS Stark attack, and the capture of rogue DEA agent Charles Frank Jordan.
In 1987 Star Gate was tasked with finding the mole in US intelligence. CIA sources in the Soviet Union were disappearing or being executed and people wanted to know who was giving them away. Star Gate came up with a composite of the traitor. Among the details was that he drove a gray European car and was involved with a Columbian woman. While many of the other details were off, Smith wonders what might have happened had the Star Gate information been used:
"The fact of the car alone might have significantly narrowed the field of possible suspects in the CIA. How many CIA employees owned grey European luxury cars in 1987? Certainly some, but percentage-wise not that many. And how many CIA employees had a significant relationship with a Latin American woman, especially a Columbian?" (p. 340)
Smith remote viewed the "accidental" Iraqi missile attack on the US destroyer Stark 50 hours before it occurred. He described the colors of the attacking military ("tan uniforms with black belts and bits of red and green."), the unprofessional nature of the attackers ("they reminded me of a militia as opposed to a professional military"), and the explosion itself ("The structure/vessel shivers, shakes, quivers. 'There were a 'clang,' a 'screech,' and a 'metallic squeal...'").
A final story I'll share is that of the rogue DEA agent, Charles Frank Jordan. This agent had turned bad and escaped custody. The DEA was convinced he was in the Caribbean. A remote viewer thought he was in Wyoming. "This information was so out of line with where Jordan was thought to be, that at first the authorities were inclined to ignore it. Finally, one agent decided that it would do no harm to alert police in that part of Wyoming.(p. 384)" Jordan was apprehended shortly after that - in Wyoming!
I highly recommend Reading the Enemy's Mind.
One of the best histories I have ever read.......2007-09-23
I have read a lot of books and articles about Stargate, but the majority of the material here was a surprize to me. How did this all start? What were the early days like? Why did the CIA pull the plug? What kind of results were they really getting?
The history is exhaustive, with many exact dates names and locations. However, the book is not dry at all. A nice touch is Major Smith's own story woven in. Yes history is about people.
There's a great section in the beginning that calls to task the so-called skeptic James Randi, and how his research is flawed, slanted, inaccurate, and often made-up. The book mentions specific falsehoods and areas where Randi just made stuff up to support his point. This is ironic because the psychic research is strongly controlled here while Randi is guilty of the falsehoods he projects on all things paranormal.
RV works. The book cites a lot of research, some published in per-reviewed journals. There's an amazing comment from a peer-reviewer who didn't want a study to appear in the IEEE journal who said something like, "I don't care if it is real, I don't want to believe it." This gives you an idea of what so-called legit science does with research outside it's accepted box.
Major Smith has written a great history of the psychic spying program. Cold War buffs will find it fascinating. Paranormal researchers should find it fascinating. Anyone who likes a good story will enjoy it.
Finally the truth comes out..........2007-09-21
I have been following the saga of remote viewing since the first media reports and subsequent appearances by Major Ed Doomes, er Dames, and others on the Art Bell show. I have read some great books by those involved like Dale Graff and especially Joe McMoneagle. Dean Radin's books have convinced me that psi functioning is a real phenonemon, no one knows how it works, or why it doesn't sometimes. But when it works it is elegant, accurate, and important to our world view, I believe because of what it says about the collective. We are all part of the same organism, all one, and these bodies are just a temporary vehicle. We can keep killing and hating if you want, but it is pretty pointless.....Anyway this book lays out a credible documentated history of Remote Viewing from a legitimate source and answers a lot of questions, detailing the origins through to its ultimate demise as an intelligence tool. Time will tell, but getting this out of the hands of the bureaucracy should turn out to be the greatest moment in history. Some might say first we have get it away from Ed Dames...but time and Ed's unfulfilled predictions will take care of that. I could never figure out why the most public of RVers in the early days had such little credibility. David Morehouse and Ed Dames are finally outed for good in this book. They are the kind of people that just live in a little different reality with or without remote viewing. You have met the type before, seem to exagerate everything, especially their own importance in something. Turns out both of them were bit players with much less time, training, experience and accuracy than other more level headed RVers that are not so willing to run their mouth about unverifiable possible reality targets. Please, if you are at all interested in this subject matter stick with these authors I have mentioned, and of course Paul Smith. They are giving you the straight skinny on an amazing new idea that will ultimately lead to whole new understanding of the universe. But please be careful about the ones that will try to turn themselves into would-be prophets4profit. It takes a stable middle of the road mind to handle this stuff. The overly enthusiastic are usually over the top on everything. If your conscious mind can barely process what is in reality happening in your own lives, Mr Dames and Moorehouse, what are the chances that you can accurately process messages from your subconscious, especially when you ignore established protocols that keep your imagination in check. Your mission here is not to save the world, you have to save yourself first to be of any use....
Paul's book.......2007-08-28
Wish I had reviewed this book here when I got it, but I seem to have gotten carried away with my read and forgot all about coming back to make my review of it. Better late than never,'eh? :)
------------------------------
I really enjoyed reading this book by Paul H. Smith. Extremely intriguing to say the least with lots of info on how the US Govt. dealt with this phenomenon. Paul writes so that the average layman can understand his words. Brilliantly done!
Human Potential is staggering.......2007-07-30
This is a very intriguing book--Details the chronology of the government program as well as discussing specific RV events. I liked the way he went into depth about the training Ingo Swann gave him also.

An Instruction Book on spiritual Healing Spells.......2007-05-12
I had previously read parts of this book at the local library and knew I had to add it to my collection. The book is amazing, it contains healing spells, and can also be used as an amulet. Some of the language is a little dated so you'll have to do some homework to find out the modern equivalent to the words and conditions named in the book. I highly recommend anyone interested in spiritual healing purchase this book.
Greatest book ever.......2006-10-25
I was given this book by my great grandmother. She said it was the reprint of the book my great-great-great grandmother had used. My 3*great grandmother had been a wonderful christian healer and swore by this book. I do not used it, but love everything I have read in it.
This is from the writing of Manly Wade Wellman.......2005-12-05
If you haven't read Manly Wade Wellman, then you have missed a wonderful opportunity. It's good writing, and the best of his writing is about Silver John, who wanders the Applachian mountains finding song, and dealing with supernatural evil, often with the help of this book. No, it's not a grimoire, but it does have some wonderful folk wisdom that will make the major drug companies hate you, since you won't be buying their drugs if you use these natural remedies. A wonderful book, and even today, well worth reading.
More than pleased.......2004-11-11
I bought this book with having any prior knowledge of its contents except whay i saw on an old 80's film. I can say how plweased i am. If you are looking for a time tested tride and true book on folk healing then this is certainly the one your looking for. I would deffintly reccomend this one to anyone. Peace, prayers, and good luck.
Uniquely American Magical Beliefs.......2004-01-13
Despite the title, this book has nothing to do with Native American beliefs and traditions. Its actually the folk beliefs of the Pensylvannia Dutch folk doctors, hex-crafters, magicians and healers. A unique blend of Christianity and German folklore, this book was a major influence on American folk magic (from Hoodoo to Appalachian study-witches) for many years, and was mentioned several times in the fictional works of Manly Wade Wellman. Its still practiced in some remote areas. It includes a number of charms, hexes and spells. Amongst these are numerous cures for bleeding, warts, colic, epilepsy, headaches, scurvy, tapeworms and many livestock ailments, as well as charms for a safe journey, catching lots of fish, legal success, protection against bullets, driving away vermin, bringing back lost animals and so forth. More esoteric/mystical things include spells against witchcraft, evil spirits and the like, as well as binding a theif or releasing someone from bindings. Theres also certain lore such as advice for pregnant women, unlucky days and hunting talismans.
This is quite an encyclopedic work, covering just about every element of rural folk magic in the United States. This is quite a wonderful book for anyone interested in magic, mysticism and the occult (especially in a historical, folk or Christian context), and a uniquely American book. Definately worth checking out.

Most marvelous journey through time and space.......2006-08-17
Jean Giraud, known as Moebius is one of the foremost expert talents when it comes to the comic medium, born in France and trained at an art institute but well known all over the globe. Perhaps best known for illustrating an Old West comic, Blueberry, he was also drawing and designing costumes and sets to such movies as Alien, Tron, Willow, The Fifth Element and The Abyss. His imaginary worlds and characters are lush and rich, making my brain and eyes fill with glee, and honestly making me want to get up and draw myself. Arzach is not a comic book, but an actual novel, tangling the real world with Moebius's imaginary land of Morning of Time, where the main hero is Arzach himself, a silent and wise warrior flying on a pteron (a pterodactyl like creature) though golden sun rays, rich blue skies over lush green grasses swaying under the creatures wings, which pull any living pray into its green tentacles and devour it. Nothings is as it seems on the strange world filled with deserts and pyramids, forests and dark crystal towers. There are however portals on this land that can transport any creatures to our modern civilization, as something forlorn is brewing in the Morning of Time land and It wants to get out to our side.
Our hero is on a mission, as the book starts of a little complicated, due to strange names, but it slowly melts all the stories and characters as there are many, to form what looks like bedtime stories with a twist into a full fledged battle between good and some really nasty rotten evil. Arzach the silent warrior tires to save his land from Sarakin, a blood hungry evil creature beyond damnation who is literally killing everyone in sight and who is extremely darkly written in this beautiful book. The story flows from the beginning, of how the land rose form the boiling sea, as creature good and free got pushed over by malevolent spirits who rule the underworld, which seems to roam free as it pleased, attacking innocents with huge eight legged monkeys, flying salamanders, evil wizards, soldiers and gnomes and carnivorous creatures who each other. This is the land of Kinds and evil barons, red eyes hounds with yellow teeth who hunt the forests at night and spirits who live in the tar and who will cast away any sanity its prey possesses. Pretty much anything imaginable is reality there as Arzach somehow has a crash of cultures when an artist from Los Angeles gets through to his side, and who against all odds tries to fight the battle with him against Sarakin who is the master of conniving and lying, spying and above all focused on destroying Arzach and all the humans.
I had a great time reading into Moebius's world of power struggles and relationships between the good creatures and the magical animals, as some of the pteron flights and fighting sequences were movie like in front of my eyes. I felt as if I was there, flying with Arzach wielding a glimmering sword, conquering the dark plague.
Moebius is a great artist, from drawing serene images to lush and violent and sometimes sexually charged topics as his imagination ends where the sun finally sets. The sun will never set anywhere of course, as he will never stop being one of the most influential and amazing artists of our time. This books plunges into his story and makes me crave more. I hope to read continued stories of Arzach, with his tall hat and fuzzy pom poms, slicing through air on his mighty bird.
Lifetime of inspiration........2003-12-17
Jean "Moebius" Giraud created a work that transcended the comicstrip medium with Arzach. Known as the artist on the classic western series, "Lieutenant Blueberry", Giraud started experimenting with adult themes in his work, exploring a form of narrative storytelling that he channelled directly from his subconscious. Prior to Arzach there was "The Detour", still signed Gir, and then "The Horny Goof", which preempted "The Airtight Garage". But it was Arzach that had the most profound effect on the comic industry. Silent and enigmatic, it is a collection of sometimes comic, sometimes profound short stories. The artwork owes much to early American pulp work by such greats as Virgil Finley. The landscapes linger like realised dreams.
Arzach has provided me with a lifetime of inspiration in my comic work. It is timeless and it is a masterpiece. If you enjoy sophisticated free-form artwork with adult fantasy and science fiction themes, then Arzach will not disappoint.
Also check out Moebius' "The Long Tomorrow".
What dunces the two previous posters are.......2002-09-30
...It's pretty clear this is a novelization, like the great X-Men or Silver Surfer novels from the same publisher, doh. And the guy looking for the ARZACH comic -- have you tried typing ARZACH here? There are not one but TWO editions of Moebius' superb graphic novels on sale here. (Highly recommended too.) If you like traditional sword & sorcery, sort of like Moorcock's Elric, you'll like that novel. It's unpretentious and fun. There's a cool map too.
A breath of fresh air.......2002-02-10
Moebius Arzach is a compelling and original work, wonderfully illustrated with huge appeal. I hope to some day read another volume of tales about Arzach, Charlimpota the jovial wizard and the Pterons. One for the keeper shelf.
the rating is judged on my brother in laws reaction..........2001-12-26
I didn't read this, but bought it to give to my brother in law for Christmas. He's nuts about the Arzach character and even named his cat Arzach (she's a nice kitty!). Well, Christmas was yesterday and he went absolutely NUTS when he opened this gift.

The most helpful diet guide I've found yet!.......2000-04-16
I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes two and a half years ago. My first response was to research diet, nutrition and exercise as means of controlling my blood sugar. I've gone through dozens of books since then, and this is the first one I've found that actually pulls the information together in a practical way that works for me.
There are hundreds of diabetic cookbooks and meal planners on the market. The problem is that different people will have different responses to certain combinations of carbs, fat, and protein in their diets. This book takes the time to explain why some diabetics may need to have as little as 30% of their daily calories coming from carbohydrates, while others may need to have as much as 60% of their daily calories from carbs. The author also talks about the effect fiber has on glucose levels, and her system for balancing a diabetic diet relies on counting carbohydrates, calories, and fiber rather than exchanges.
Many other books provide menus and specific meal plans. The big problem with that approach, from my point of view, is that it can be very difficult to apply those meal plans to a family situation. This book focuses on strategies rather than specific menus, which allows me to control my diet more effectively even when I am in unexpected situations.
Clear, to the point, encouraging, and informative.......1999-11-10
During the time of denial, anger, depression and total rejection of my diagnosis as Diabetic, I purchased several books to research and find out what to do. The Good News Eating Plan For Type II Diabetes by Elaine Magee gave me the immediate help and information I needed as if I were speaking with the author. Clear, to the point, encouraging, and full of information for the newly diagnosed. I have returned to it repeatedly for assistance. Thank you, Elaine.
Good information and advice.......1999-01-19
This book provides an excellent resource for Type II diabetics. The first section clearly explains essential information needed to manage diabetes and especially nutritional and dietary approaches. The author makes good arguments for balancing carbohydrates with fat and fiber, the advantages of mono-unsaturated fats, and especially that sugar alone is not the enemy. The role of the glycemic index is stressed and how foods that have lower indices are also likely to make you feel less hungry longer. The nutritional goals and strategies are easy to read and absorb. The book however falls short of its potential in the sections which describe how to implement all this advice. Quantitative information on nutritional content and glycemic index are presented inside the text in 3 long tables of every food known to man which are repetitive and disturb the flow of reading the text. These should have been combined into a single table highlighting foods high in fiber and low in index; as it stands one must flip back and forth to figure out which foods provide what. There is a lot of good information here - especially useful is a list of best tasting foods that are "light" - one can look for substitute brands for foods in one's own present diet, which are thus likely to be used. There is some information presented on how to balance some meals e.g. adding cram cheese to a bagel actualy helps! However, one is left to figure out meal plans and menus, where the book could have really helped with suggestions for a week of menus for several of the stategies suggested. All in all, this was a very helpful book, but it could have been MUCH better with a little more organization and detail.

A Seafood Celebration.......2002-11-27
A great book for restaurant operations. All of the recipes work. Also, great for giving service staff information about the varities of fish. I give it out to chefs as a reference book.
Seafood - Simple and Sublime.......2000-03-26
Sheryl and Mel London have done justice to fish! This is a must have cookbook for every chef. There are especially good sections on how to buy, prepare and cook fish in easy to follow and practical prose.
In addition to the selection and preparation of the ocean's bounty the book contains superb recipes for a simple meal - or an extravagant seafood feast. Favorites I have from the book include Cacciucco Alla Livornese, a spicy fish stew derived from an old Turkish recipe and Sauteed scallops with Ginger, red pepper and chives.
An excellent resource and a must have for every modern home cook.

LOVELY PHOTOS...GREAT IDEAS.......2005-06-24
If you are the type of decorator who likes to mix antique or just plain old furniture and possessions with new furnishings, this book is loaded with ideas on how to make it work. The first half of the book is dedicated to the elements of design--chairs, mirrors, lighting, pillows, etc. I did not find the text in these sections to be as educational as the text in the 2nd half of the book. The photos in this first section are wonderful (very high end) and the writer talks a lot about balance, scale, etc., but doesn't say what you actually need to do to accomplish the balance, scale, etc. The second half, dedicated to the indivudual rooms in the home, is much better. Not only are the photos beautiful, but solid suggestions are given as to what works and what does not. Most of the photos are of the homes of world-class designers or the very-rich. That was as problem for me because there is no way that I can afford the kinds of furniture and decorative accents used in the photos. For that reason, I'm giving the book a ****. I bought mine from an individual seller at a discounted price, so it was worth it for me.
the BEST decorating book, and I have at least 20.......2003-02-16
This book explains in so many useful ways how to create a home, that makes you proud of living in it. The photographs are very beautiful and well chosen, and the author explains step by step how to mix colors, patterns and not to forget how to arrange furniture and pictures in order to create a relaxed atmosphere. You will not regret buying this book, it is next to the awesome pictures really worth reading! ENJOY!!!
Finally, a book that really explains HOW to decorate!.......2001-01-17
This is by far my favorite decorating book!! If you have antiques (or just old or quirky things you really love) this book explains how to arrange them with other furnishings in a way that is both beautiful to look at and also very livable. I'm decorating my tiny house, and have been reading a lot of decorating books. This is the ONLY book I've come across that explains HOW to decorate. It breaks down this daunting task (it seems daunting to me since I don't know where to begin) into smaller components that make sense. Each chapter explains how to work with the different elements of your home, such as Furniture, Fabrics, Lighting, but also explains the elements of each room, such as choosing Flooring and Wall Color. It also tells you how to pull together items that don't necessarily match through use of Color, Texture, Pattern, and through Proportion & Scale (yes, even I was able to understand these concepts because of the direct, yet eloquent wording of the text and great pictures that reinforced the concepts being explained). Some of the pictures had the typical 14-foot ceilings and grand spaces that I will probably never live with, but many others were of small-sized rooms that were beautifully done. Even the 14-foot-ceiling pictures had many, many ideas that I could use because these rooms were decorated by function--most contained small groupings of furniture (i.e., sitting areas, dining areas, etc.) that broke up the large spaces and made them look comfortable and inviting. I just finished reading the book, and I'm looking forward to going back and really study it again. I do feel more confident that I'll be able to create a home that is lovely and comfortable.
A book for those who appreciate the eclectic look.......2000-11-27
In many ways, the pictures in this volume reminds me of interiors shown in books on French style. Rather than trying to create museum-perfect rooms that represent a certain period in time, this book is about combining what you love in ways that are pleasing to the eye and easy to live with. So, if you wish to have a stylish home that mixes antiques with more modern furniture and is accented with collections representative of cultures from around the world, this book is for you!

Sam Does It Again.......2002-01-12
Sam Hawkins books are always a must have to me. I cross stitch a lot as I don't get out too much, and find his books composed with care. They inspire you to add and subtract bits so they ' live' for ever as I have not found one I could not return to and get another idea from. Well laid out in easy to read formatt. Clearly explained from cover to cover. Unusuall designs also included. An all round good buy.
Answers the question what to do with cross stitch projects........2001-07-04
This is a great book. There are over 150 designs for all sorts of occasions. The designs are charted in color and are simple to use. For the most part the designs are small enough to stitch out in an afternoon if you are quick. The designs are great but even greater is the variety of ways the author shows you to use the designs. Two of the unsual uses were on the heads of stick pins for bulletin boards and designs sewn on gloves. I really am impressed with this book.

Certainly Inspiring.......2005-08-09
A very nice book. Got it as a gift from a friend and whenever I am too caught up with life & such, this book reminds me to set up the easel and paint. Lots of pictures, lots of inspiration that comes from looking and observing good art. Not a 'techniques' book, so if you are looking for instruction suggest picking up a manual, this one is all about inspiration.
Should be called a collection of Paintings...Period!.......2003-08-28
The title is misleading. The book contains a collection of paintings...only. The only text in the book is that in the captions for the paintings. The captions contain only such info as the name of the work, the artist, and (sometimes) the medium. Techniques, etc are not discussed. The "ideas," if any, are those which you may get from looking at the pictures.
The painting are presented in color and include a wide range of sytles and mediums. If you are looking for a collection of pictures, this is it. If you want more info, keep looking.

Fred Thompson (1873-1919) was a pioneering entrepreneur who encouraged Americans, especially American men, to have fun and stop feeling guilty about it. He designed and built Luna Park, which in 1903 transformed Coney Island from an area so tawdry it was known as "Sodom by the Sea" into a respectable venue for middle-class recreation. He created the Hippodrome, the world's largest theater when it opened in 1905, and filled it with lavish spectacles at affordable ticket prices. He moved on to become "the boy-wonder of Broadway producers," responsible for such popular hits as Brewster's Millions and Little Nemo. His financial acumen never equaled his showmanship (he lost control of both Luna Park and the Hippodrome to better businessmen), but he seems to have thoroughly enjoyed spending vast sums of money to make fantasy and luxury accessible to the masses. Woody Register, professor of American Studies at Sewanee, explores Thompson's life and career as a paradigm for the sea change in commercial culture that took place in the early years of the 20th century, when the Victorian emphasis on educational, elevating entertainment was challenged by a more hedonistic attitude that valued pleasure for its own sake. Gender theory and other currently trendy academic disciplines inform the author's point of view without detracting unduly from his well-written and well-paced narrative. Register could have eased up on the Peter Pan metaphors, but he convincingly links Thompson to present-day innovators who've made a bundle by refusing to grow up, such as director Steven Spielberg and the whiz kids who created the personal computer and Internet revolutions. This is a nice example of a scholarly work that reaches beyond its core audience to appeal to the general public. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
A generation before Walt Disney, Fred Thompson was the "boy-wonder" of American popular amusements. At the turn of the 20th century, Thompson's entrepreneurial drive made him into an entertainment mogul who helped to define the popular culture of his day. In this lively biography, Woody Register tells Thompson's remarkable story and examines the transformation of commerce and entertainment as American society moved into an era of mass marketing and large-scale corporate enterprise. Getting his start as a promoter of carnival shows at world's fairs, Thompson was one of the principal developers of Coney Island, where he created the majestic Luna Park. Register traces Thompson's career as he built the mammoth Hippodrome Theater in Manhattan, where he mounted many productions noted for their spectacular--and spectacularly costly--staging effects. Register shows how Thompson's fantasies appealed to the growing legions of Americans who found themselves in a world that seemed increasingly "businesslike" and profit oriented. He illustrates how Thompson aggressively marketed to adult consumers a world of make-believe and childlike play, carefully crafting his own public image as "the boy who never grew up." Colorful, well-written, and insightful, The Kid of Coney Island brings to life a kaleidoscopic era in New York history as well as one of its most striking characters.

Fred Thompson habitue of Coney Island Restaurants.......2001-10-20
As a lifelong resident of Coney Island, and the author of a recently published memoir entitled Remembrance of a Restaurant,or a Decameron of Dining,I share the deserved enthusiasm of all reviews for this life of remarkable showman,Fred Thompson. Unlike other reviews, mine is more intimate. Fred Thompson was an habitue of the finest restaurants of the period like Ravenhall's,Villepique's,Beau Rivage, and my parents notable landmark restaurant called Villa Joe's.A Little Bit of Naples in Coney Island. It was razed by urban renewal(1915-1975)As a boy, I recall his frequent patronage ,especially when he gave me season passes to Luna Park ,and a pat on the head.He was as modest as his imagination was flamboyant. He often had dinner talking to my father about my father's Boston Terrier championsI remember him as being always abstracted, away in thought. Mr. Register has reminded us in this biography of the great originals of that period of singular will and imagination. If I still had the restaurant I would invite Mr. Register to a drink on the house to celebrate this triumphant book suitable for a great showman.
The Rise of the New Leisure Class.......2001-09-11
Fred Thompson was the "kid" (he was in his early twenties when he built Luna Park in Coney Island) who first recognized that the American middle class in the early 20th century was ripe for amusement and fun, ready to embrace consumption, fun and leisure as a moral system. Here he is given his due as a great innovator (inventor of the theme park), and a great showman (Broadway producer of mega-extravaganzas). Woody Register's highly readable and extremely insightful book is not just about Fred Thompson (of which there is very little historical information other than press releases, scattered interviews and new stories about Thompson's endeavors and stunts), but is all about the break between the early industrial age (all about saving and putting aside wages for a rainy day, Victorian respectability, the patriarchal society and responsibility) and the dawning of the modern age of consumption (spending for the fun of it, disrepectable activities, the newly feminized office-based white collar man and irresponsiblity). Thompson was the first entreprenuer to sell the idea of childhood as a lifelong event sustained through the agency of the carnival, the theme park, the toy. His genius lay in combining the new conception of childhood as a time of "innocent joy" with the new era of comsumption for consumption's sake. A wild spender, he died penniless, still enthusiastic, still working on his next big project, a perfect exemplar of the new boy/man Peter Pan personality he was instrumental in creating. According to Mr. Register's Introduction, this work took him much longer to write than he expected it would. We are the beneficiaries of his extended and meticulous labors -- this book is sure to beome a classic cultural studies text.
From Side Show to Broadway.......2001-09-07
The mysterious Fredrick Thompson left little biographical information in his wake, but Woody Register has taken the scant evidence and woven it into a revealing narritive of the man who made Coney Island famous. This book cchronicles an even more important story as well, the concepts of leisure and amusements in the 20th century. The theme park, theatrical spectacular, Vegas showroom and Broadway all own a debt to Fred Thompson's inner child. This book is a must for anyone serious about the business of fun.
