Book Description
Rubyfruit Jungle is the first milestone novel in the extraordinary career of one of this country's most distinctive writers. Bawdy and moving, the ultimate word-of-mouth bestseller,
Rubyfruit Jungle is about growing up a lesbian in America – and living happily ever after.
Born a bastard, Molly Bolt is adopted by a dirt-poor Southern couple who want something better for their daughter. Molly plays doctor with the boys, beats up Leroy the tub and loses her virginity to her girlfriend in sixth grade.
As she grows to realize she's different, Molly decides not to apologize for that. In no time she mesmerizes the head cheerleader of Ft. Lauderdale High and captivates a gorgeous bourbon-guzzling heiress.
But the world is not tolerant. Booted out of college for moral turpitude, an unrepentant, penniless Molly takes New York by storm, sending not a few female hearts aflutter with her startling beauty, crackling wit and fierce determination to become the greatest filmmaker that ever lived.
Critically acclaimed when first published,
Rubyfruit Jungle has only grown in reputation as it has reached new generations of readers who respond to its feisty and inspiring heroine.

Historically Interesting, But Slap-Dash and Superficial.......2007-06-30
Although she is presently best known as the author of the "Miss Murphy" mystery series, which includes such titles as WISH YOU WERE HERE and REST IN PIECES, Rita Mae Brown's original claim to fame was her 1973 debut novel RUBYFRUIT JUNGLE, the semi-autobiographical tale of a rebellious lesbian coming of age in the turbulent 1960s.
When it was first published, more than one critic compared the novel to Twain's HUCKLEBERRY FINN, a sort of voyage of discovery through both the uppercrust and the lower depths. But time has a way of putting these sorts of extravagant claims into perspective: Rita Mae Brown's voice is indeed new and fresh, but she ain't no Mark Twain, and time has not been nearly so kind to RUBYFRUIT JUNGLE as it has to HUCKLEBERRY FINN. Read today, it seems more than a little slap-dash and certainly lacking in scope.
The narrator is Molly Bolt, an adopted child born whose parents move to Florida. Always a handful, Molly is soon experimenting with sex--first with boys and then, much more to her liking, with women. None of her sexual encounters can be described as romantic per se; they tend to be about the physical plain and simple. Given Molly's rebellious streak, they also have a tendency to explode in her face, and when a college romance errupts into scandal she determines to follow her dream of being a film director and makes her way to New York--where she finds that her gender, even more than her sexuality, has stacked the deck against her.
It is not surprising that Brown, who was deeply involved in the feminist movement of her era, tends to paint her male characters in lackluster colors; it is, however, tremendously surprising that the single most sympathetic character in the novel is Molly's father and that Brown is goes out of her way to present her female characters in the extremely unflattering ways. This is no less true of Molly than it is of the other women. Her mean-spirited is often funny, but it is more often tiresome. Her sense of self is certainly admirable, but her refusal to compromise seems less a matter of personal integrity than pure-dee stubbornness.
As the book progresses, Molly become increasingly wearing, and the story itself, as it bounces from small-town Florida to the urban jungle of New York, has a superficial quality. When all was said and done, I wanted a little more depth than Brown has to offer--but there is one thing that Brown nails. It is among the things that made the book so startling in 1973 and it is a point of view that continues to resonate with readers to this day. Where her sexuality is concerned, Molly considers herself perfectly normal, and if some one can't cope with it--well, that's their problem, not hers.
When all is said and done, it is probably best to read RUBYFRUIT JUNGLE for its status as groundbreaker rather than for the quality of the book itself. The quality of writing is rather slap-dash and the various attitudes are too distinctly of their time to have much reality for a contemporary reader. Recommended, but primarily for those interested in lesbian and feminist fiction of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Not too bad.......2006-05-23
It seems that there is a bias against marriage and heterosexuality in the book. The writer makes it seem that a woman's life is over once she settles down and gets married. The girls who have tasted homosexuality are so free and full of life opposed to the married women who look twice their age. But overall an easy read.
A fun summer read.......2006-01-10
I read this novel because it is referenced in the Educating Rita. The relevance of the main character saying that this book is her favorite escaped me until I read the novel for myself.
A lovely coming of age novel which I found very enjoyable. I can't say that this is great literature but I don't think that the the author was aspiring to write "the great American novel." What she did set out to write, an honest novel about a young girl's coming to terms with her role in society and her sexuality, is genuine and uncompromising. Above all else, it is gentle and sometimes, in a world where you are disenfranchised in spite of so-called equal rights, it is nice to have an honest and gentle story to remind you of how much further we still have to go.
Pick It Up.......2005-09-07
I would of gave it a 5 but I didn't like the ending. This was comedy at it's best. The main character's life - [...] out of carolina - gets worst every chapter. Not much goes in her direction but she tries hard to succeed. She is looking for her true self and where she belongs. Everytime she finds someplace, something happens. She realizes that, that isn't her. Oddly enough she leaves her mark on so many people along the way.
Read it, it is "required lesbian reading".
Very down to earth and hilarious!.......2005-06-23
I loved this book! I read this book when my sexual self was beginning to open up. I love how the main character views herself. She sees nothing wrong with who she is and the way she is. She is growing up and just happens to be a lesbian and it's NO BIG DEAL to her. She doesn't morph into a caricature of her lesbian self. I loved how she considered herself NORMAL and didn't try to create a separate lesbian world to live in.

Simple Review.......2007-08-02
I got this book in the mail the other day and I thought that it was so amazing that I read it in two days. To give you an example of how much I loved this book, I put down the new Harry Potter book with no hesitation. I won't give away the plot but I will say that this a great coming of age story about a girl who had a lot of guts and a great sense of self. Maybe you won't like it, but it will make you think.

Then there are the devastated parents of the murdered girl and the wide mixture of reactions from their farming neighbors. You Dopes!.......2007-01-05
I would love to rate this book. However, I am still waiting for the copy to arrive. Perhaps, you'll ask me to review it after I'm able to read it. Just a thought.....
Devilishly good............2005-12-19
I hope this is the start of a new series. This book definitely falls into the category of English village mystery. The descriptions of the countryside, the farming community and the local inhabitants are well-written and evocative. The story moved along at a brisk pace and the "reveal" was realistic. Worth reading.
Hope this is the start of a series........2005-09-14
The plot was good and there were enough suspects to keep me going, but the motive was a little weak. What I really liked about the book was the characters. There are a lot of them, but each was unique and interesting in their own right and I really liked the relationships between the characters. I can only hope this is the beginning of a series as I should really like to see how these characters develop over time.
Solid mystery debut.......2005-09-09
I would have given this book 3.5 stars, but since that wasn't an option, I went ahead and bumped it up to 4. I believe I'm correct in saying that this is Olive Etchells' first mystery book (though she has written other novels), and it's not a bad effort at all.
The story starts out by introducing us to the Baxters, a family consisting of Sally, Robert and their three children. They've recently moved to village in Cornwall and Ben, the youngest son, soon discovers the body of a 17-year-old girl on his favorite beach. The oldest son, Luke, immediately comes under suspicion, since he was the last one to see the girl alive, but before long the whole family becomes involved, one way or another, with the murder.
DCI Channon, a quiet and kind officer, heads the case with his abrasive assistant, Sergeant Bowles, and the two soon discover that there is much more to the case than they initially expected.
The writing in this novel was solid, though I found some of the dialogue, especially Sally's "internal dialogue," to be a bit awkward. One of the major problems I had with this book is that I just didn't like the characters all the much (with the exception of DCI Channon). Having said that, however, I would most likely pick up another mystery by Etchells, should she decide to write more of them.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-04
A fairly ordinary fantasy, but the fun part is the urban setting of Las Vegas, and the shenanigans that happen around there.
You have Merlin, mobsters, demons, and a young mathematical type
that is needed to save everyone from very, very bad things. That, and a
hardnosed woman to keep him in line, and to annoy him.
"the very rational return of A Logical Magician".......2006-06-05
A Calculated Magic is the sequel to The Logical Magician and features the return of math graduate Jack Collins. Jack still works for the investment firm of Ambrose and Associates, Ltd. and still is the chosen hero to save humanity from the tyranny of evil. This time, he goes up against Hasan al-Sabbah, the supernatural Old Man of the Mountains, head of the fabled cult of Hashashins (later to be called assassins by those in the Crusades). The Old Man is holding an auction in Las Vegas, the prize of which is a deadly vial of biological plague. Jack, having survived various attempts on his life and determined to rescue his kidnapped (again) fiancee Megan, aims to crash that party. But all of that is nothing compared to his ultimate task: somehow Jack must stop the all-powerful Babylonian God of Death and Destruction called The Crouching One, the Lord of the Lions, who's bent on world subjugation and has been demonically working behind the scenes for two books now. Once again, Jack must use his arsenal of mathematics, logic and plain old common sense to rescue the maiden and save the day.
Most of the characters introduced in The Logical Magician are back for this sequel: the one and only Merlin the Magician, thriving as a commodities broker; his gorgeous halfling daughter Megan; Cassandra, bodyguard, martial-arts teacher and also the last bonafide Amazon and something of a prude; Fritz Grondark, gruff auto mechanic extraordinaire and a dwarf; and Witch Hazel and her talking cat familiar Sylvester. The only one absent is faery changeling and literal know-it-all Simon Goodfellow, who is inconveniently away, thus depriving Jack of a supply of easy answers. But there are new allies to aid Jack, namely his mother Freda (can you guess who she is?) and her two magical pet ravens, Hugo and Mongo, and John Henry (a Las Vegas chauffer) - which is a good thing because Jack's new foes number among them an affrit, the Sphinx, Cerberus the 3-headed Hellhound and the Norse Godling Loki and his Frost Giants.
This is another light-hearted, whimsical effort by Robert Weinberg. In a world where human consciousness has brought into life all its superstitions, myths and folklore legends, the author has again elected to go with a tongue-in-cheek tone and quite winningly pulls it off. In order to blend in with society, our various supernaturals have adapted by mostly undertaking mundane professions (the Wandering Jew writes travel books under a pen name; the Pied Piper performs in a nightclub; Hercules is a bouncer...). Several of Mr. Weinberg's notions and passages elicit an appreciative smile or chuckle (I like that Jack now sees the world thru rose-colored lenses...And there's even a fleeting reference to one of Weinberg's own works...and the comment "Cerberus...ain't he an aardvark?"...). I find Jack's method of defeating the Crouching One particularly brilliant and pretty funny. All in all, this is a fun book with which to while away a few hours. Fans of mythology will definitely get a kick out of this all too short series. Like The Logical Magician, A Calculated Magic is deserving of 3 and a half stars.
Somewhere there is a third book with the title Subtract One Sorcerer floating in limbo - waiting for release - should the publishers deem the public's taste warrants it. I, for one, would enjoy catching up with Jack Collins, Megan, Merlin and all (but especially with the gossipy blackbirds Hugo and Mongo).
Joint Review of A Calculating Magic and A Logical Magician.......2002-07-26
This is an entertaining and lighthearted pair of fantasy novels. As with other books of this type, the basic premise is that magical and mythical creatures continue to live among us. Weinberg finds witty ways to integrate the magical into ordinary life. The magician Merlin is a financial consultant, wood nymphs inhabit shopping malls, etc. The hero is a young mathematician who uses logic and knowledge of modern society to vanquish the villains. Of these two books, A Calculating Magic is the more amusing with better character development and clever use of Norse and Arabic mythology. The major joke at the end of A Calculating Magic is particularly clever. These books are hard to find but well worth a few dollars in a used book store.
Gotta love this book!.......1999-04-28
Robert Weinberg drags myths, legends, and grim fairy tales kickin' and screamin' into the present and makes his every man character find modern equivalents to old wive's tale solutions. The plot twists in ways you wouldn't anticipate and humor is spread liberally throughout. I especially liked Odin's crows plaguing the hero and his fiancee.

A Great Guide to the Basics.......2000-04-29
I was introduced to this book on a group ski trip. Coming in from a long day on the slopes, the house was full of the smell of roasting vegetables, baking bread and, yes, garlic. Heaven. I spent a good bit of time that weekend just reading Ms. Barrett's book. Unlike Krikus, I found the book to be easy and entertaining reading. You can learn a lot about a people and their culture by spending a little time in their kitchens. "From an Italian Garden" allowed me that opportunity. The food is simple and appealing and the recipes are well-described and easy to follow. The cooks that weekend sent my wife and I a copy of the book as a gift several weeks later and it remains a treasure of our kitchen library.

Wonderful cookbook.......2006-07-01
I'm not much of a cook, but I was delighted to receive this book from my friends Paola Scaravelli and Jon Cohen some years ago, and have occasionally turned to the recipes here when all other ideas fail me. It's a fantastic collection of meatless meals and other delights, and will be sure to please vegetarians, health-conscious cooks and anyone who's simply curious. A great book, even for those of us not known for our kitchen expertise.
This is a great meatless italian cookbook.......1999-08-24
I love looking and cooking from this book. The soups are wonderful and have spent endless reading and cooking from this gem!
If you like Italian and Vegetables, this is the one........1998-05-28
I have tried out dozens of recipes from this charming book, none have failed. Although the recipes here are all meatless, the book rises above the genre of vegetarian cooking; my carnivor friends have not even noticed the absence of meat. There are, after all, only two kinds of cooking, bad cooking and good cooking, and this book is about good cooking.
Best Italian book of vegetable cooking I've used.......1998-02-25
A book I constantly turn to for ideas after I've looked in the vegetable bin or my orto in Tuscany to see what is available for dinner. It almost never lets me down. Imaginative, reliable and practical.
Book Description
Viana La Place was raised on stories of family gardens told by parents who brought their love of the Mediterranean landscape with them from Italy when they settled in California. Viana herself, after living on and off in Italy for several years, made an Italian garden of her own behind her San Francisco home filled with fragrant jasmine, olive trees, wild arugula, rampant zucchini, and bright-colored lemons. Ever since, like the best Italian cooks, she has delighted in creating meals that require only a few of the freshest ingredients.
In My Italian Garden, La Place brings the earth to the table for readers who want to cook delicious dishes with minimum work and maximum flavor, reminding us that the most satisfying food is the simplest. In 125 uncomplicated recipes, cooks will find four seasons of mouthwatering offerings, perfect for weeknight dinners or entertaining, such as New Fava Bean and Spring Greens Soup, Spaghetti Tossed with Whole Basil Leaves and Lemon Zest, Panini with Grilled Zucchini and Ricotta Salata, Pizza Verde with Artichokes and Herbs, and Meyer Lemon Gelato with Fresh Figs and Pistachios.
Illustrated with charming, evocative watercolors, and filled with lyrical passages, My Italian Garden lets readers experience the magic of the Italian garden without leaving their kitchens.
From the introduction:
"Cooking from the garden is uncomplicated cooking. Why add extraneous ingredients to flavorful produce? In fact, you will want to keep preparations pure and simple to enjoy what you've harvested in its pristine state....An Italian garden is really a state of mind. You do not need an elaborate villa to create your Italian garden. The essence of Italy can be captured in pots on a sunny terrace or a shaded balcony. An Italian garden can be herbs growing on a sunny windowsill or the back steps. You can grow your garden on a large parcel of land or on a tiny patch of earth. I hope you will be inspired by my Italian garden to grow one of your own, no matter what the size, and experience the joys of cooking directly from your Italian garden."

A banquet of delights! .......2007-07-31
The author's skillful writing and unabashed passion for Italy, Italian cooking, and her stateside Italian garden make this book a fun and insightful read from start to finish. At its outset, you journey to rural Italy, past and present, to experience the sights, scents, and flavors of true Italian cuisine. The author, who grew up in an Italian family, spent six summers researching in the seacoast area of Salento, working the olive groves, gathering herbs, and drawing culinary inspiration from townspeople. Another section, on creating an Italian garden in the U.S., is a must-read for gardeners! The attractive layout, easy-to-read print, and budget price are reader-friendly too. The recipes, 125 in all, are beautifully introduced, easy to follow, and arranged seasonally, to allow maximum usage of fresh produce. Best of all, every one we've made has tasted fabulous. Five stars for this book!

Rare Smoke is the first book devoted to the total spectrum of collecting 20th century briars, or "estate pipes," as they are popularly called. From its first whiff of a start in the early years of the 20th century to billowing clouds of enthusiasm created by today's devotees, Rare Smoke brings exciting new discoveries and never before revealed facts to this smoke-filled hobby.
Based upon more than two decades of detailed research through numerous pipe company archives, personal correspondence, exclusive interviews with members of famous pipemaking families, and drawing upon his own extensive knowledge and industry contacts (not to mention his collection of over 2,000 rare and unique briars), the author has given today's pipe collector a thorough and factual book that focuses not only on some of the most prominent 20th century pipe brands, but also some of the most obscure.
With over 100 color and black and white photos and written in the author's well-known entertaining and conversational style, Rare Smoke clears away years of misinformation and speculation, and opens up a new, fact-filled frontier for the pipe collector to experience and enjoy. Printed in a limited edition of only 2,500 copies, Rare Smoke is destined to become as collectable as many of the pipes depicted within its pages.

Excellent Pipe Reference Book.......2007-01-11
This exceptional book "Rare Smoke" allows me to have the information at my finger tips when I need to find out facts regarding rare pipes that I might otherwise of not known.
For the serious collector, or even novice, the information is priceless. The format is as usual, and easy read, in the classic author "RCH" Richard Carleton Hacker style. Highly recommended.

Rare Smoke The Ultimate Guide to Pipe Collecting.......2003-07-16
I have found this book to be very interesting to say the least, it is very explanatory on what to look for in the world pipe collecting. One cannot read this book once and gain the knowledge about pipe collecting, as each pipe has it's own characteristics to compliment the personality of the pipe smoker. I find myself having to revert to this book when interested in a certain pipe, a couple of helpful areas of expertise are the hallmarks and the discriptions of the individual pipes and how they have changed througout the history of 20th century pipe collecting. This is a must have book for anyone interested in pipes, even if you are not a collector.
The Ultimate Guide To Pipe Collecting?.......2001-11-28
RARE SMOKE The Ultimate Guide To Pipe Collecting sounds like a reference book for pipe collecting. I have reference books on other subjects for collectors. Compared to these other books, I have the following comments on RARE SMOKE. First, this is a reference book that DOES NOT HAVE AN INDEX. The photographs are of low quality. There are photos that are so blurred that one cannot see the detail that they were included to illustrate. The content is very limited. Many manufacturers and models are not included. And dating and pricing most of the limited number of pipes that are included is not possible.
A Valuable Resource.......2001-08-13
If you are interested in Pipe collecting you should procure a copy of Richard Carleton Hacker's Rare Smoke. It is a wealth of information about numerous collectable brands and varieties of pipes. In light of the fact that there are so few books on this subject I am grateful to Mr. Hacker for his work.

It fails to present an entirely clear image to the public, and, in order to acquire knowledge on the subject, one would have to resort to specialized studies on the history of Colombian architecture. The strong presence of the Colonial house in cultural imagery puts the Republican dwelling in the background, where its main characteristics become blurred.
However, the presence of Republican home architecture in Colombia is much stronger than generally believed, as it spans an epoch ranging from the proclamation of the Republic, after the country won its independence from Spain, to the dawn of modernism, which reached our shores in the thirties. In towns and villages, there are entire districts formed by Republican houses, some well-preserved, others being torn down to make way for the construction boom. Many of its architectural and ornamental aspects have lingered on fragmentarily in people's memory, and period furniture is now a prized booty for antique hunters.
This book reinstates the image of the Republican home as a composite of architecture, ornamentation, furniture and objects, which created beautiful and charming domestic environments, designed for something more than comfort. In each part of the country, the Republican home turned out with a difference, with a strong character of its own. The Republican home was an accomplishment to which many a creator contributed and not necessarily the hand of the architect.
Homes of the Republican Era bears witness to a moment in Colombian history, and also pays tribute to hundreds of craftsmen, most of them unknown, who contributed with their talent and skill to create the domestic environments presented here.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and Affordable.......2002-05-01
This small format paperback will not meet your needs if you are looking for a glossy coffee-table book to impress all your friends; but if you want a beautifully printed book containing reproductions of pictures from a little known art gallery, this is just the ticket. Italian Renaissance, Dutch (including one of only 35 known Vermeers), and, of course, Irish art, are well represented, along with Spanish, French, British, Russian and more. Each half-page reproduction is accompanied by a half page of text on the artist and the work.
