Customer Reviews:
One of the stupidest book I've read in a long time!!.......2007-09-01
I have never read a Zane book before and after reading this book, I can say I NEVER will again, the book starts off alright and you expect some substance, but it quickly begins to go down hill.
The sponsor ads were pointless, not funny and a waste of paper, then she throws the silliness from the ads into the story which makes the story just annoying and unrealistic.
The Harmony mystery was such a big secret and when they "revealed" what was wrong that was such a disappointment. The dean escapade was over the top and again....not realistic. The mandingo thing was disgusting and extremely stupid. I was very disappointed with this story and discourage anyone who doesn't have money to blow to stay away from this book.
Crackin up!.......2007-08-31
This book had me crackin up! I was really good and shows some true bondage among sisters and friends..
Funny, Funny, Funny.......2007-06-13
This book was one of the funniest that I have read in a really long time. I highly recommend this book for all to read it is sure not to disapoint!!!
Great blast from the past.......2007-06-04
I rate this 3.5 stars!
I know this is an old one, but I still enjoyed it a lot. It made me laugh out loud and shed a few tears. Very well written (of course it's by Zane). Great Read.
Laugh-Out-Loud Funny.......2007-05-10
This hilarious novel will keep you on your toes as you read about the sexual escapades of three sisters.
Book Description
It's World War I. Britain has ruled Egypt since 1881 under a shadow government headed by its Agent and Consul General under the nominal authority of Egypt's hereditary ruler the Khedive. The head of the Secret Police is the Mamur Zapt, an office currently held by a Welshman, Captain Gareth Cadwallader Owen. And as the clouds of the war further darken Egypt's sun-lit skies, he has his hands full. On the professional front, there's all that commotion that started in Cairo's Camel Market. On the personal side, Owen has married his longtime lover, the lovely Pasha's daughter, Zeinab, a move with serious consequences for both of them and riddled with political and social pitfalls. Neither can be fully accepted by the other's culture and community. Against this, the perils of the Great War pale....
This remarkable series is penned by a former Anglo-Egyptian civil servant who succeeds in bringing a vibrant, conflict-packed age to life in a manner that illuminates the situation we face today.
Customer Reviews:
The Mamur Zapt is Great as Always.......2007-01-11
As always, Pearce paints a great picture of Egypt under the British during the early 20th century. In this novel, he doesn't seem as sure of himself as he did in the past, perhaps because World War I outside of Europe is difficult to bring into sharp focus, laying as it does in the shadow of World War II.
Cultural conflict, romance, and intrigue.......2005-08-08
Another Mamur Zapt mystery will appeal both to prior fans and newcomers; for you needn't be a Mamur Zapt expert to pick up The Point In The Market as an introduction to the mystery setting. The changing Mamur Zapt is head of the Secret Police in Egypt, currently fielded by Welshman Gareth Owen, who has married his longtime lover Zeinab but finds both social and political dangers abound in his actions. Blend cultural conflict, romance, and intrigue and you have a novel packed with intriguing sub-plots and action.

Historical Middle East drama.......2005-07-05
"The Point in the Market" is a succinct novel set in 1915 Egypt in the middle of the Gallipoli campaign of World War One. Egypt has been ruled by the British Consul General since 1881. The hereditary Egyptian ruler, the Khedive, has been set up as a figurehead.
Captain Gareth Owen is serving as the Mamur Zaput, head of the Sultan's secret police. One of his underlings, an uneducated camel driver Sabri, who had done undercover work for Owen is found murdered, his body hidden in the Cairo camel market. Owen whose jurisdiction generally involves political matters feels it's his personal responsibilty to investigate the crime.
Egypt at this time is a country of mixed allegiances. Ruled for many years under the Ottoman Empire, many of the traditional rulers, the pashas, are of Turkish background. Under the resented rule of the British who are on opposite sides as the Turks in WW 1, the Egyptians have a problem in picking up guns against their fellow Muslims. This conflict of loyalties makes it difficult for Owen to get cooperation in his inquest. Locals feel that he has ulterior motives other than looking after the murdered Sabri's family who seek vengeance for his death.
All the while Owen's new wife Zeinab, daughter of a pasha and of Turkish-Egyptian extract is being stonewalled in society much as her husband is, for having married a foreigner. More of a modern woman she is frustrated in the inability of women to attain meaningful positions in society. The influx of wounded soldiers pouring into Cairo from the surrounding battlefields gives her an opportunity become involved in hospital administration.
Working within the framework of a confusing system, Owen painstakingly tracks down clues and information to help him solve, what turns out to be, a politically motivated crime.
great Mamur Zapt historical mystery .......2005-04-12
The British presence in Egypt has in fact ruled the country, but not in name until now; with World War I raging on two continents, Egypt has become a protectorate of the British Empire. The Khedive has been ousted and replaced by a sultan who answers to the British. Captain Gareth Owen, the Mamur Zapt (head of the secret police) has enough work to keep a dozen people busy. One of his spies Sabri was murdered; the inquiry has led Gareth to believe the man had information to sell to him.
Owen married his lover, the Pasha's daughter Zeinab, who is ostracized by her former friends for entangling herself with the Welsh expatriate. A number of fires in liquor houses have swept through the city and Owen learns that it is not the heat or the arid conditions that are the cause but a person and Owen wants to apprehend him before a tragedy engulfs the entire area. The Egyptians await an attack of the Turks so that they can align with the victors. With all this and more going on, Owen remains steadfast that justice will prevail for Sabri and comes up with an ingenious plan to achieve his goal.
The fifteenth Mamur Zapt historical mystery retains the uniqueness, excitement and freshness that are the character traits of all the novels in this exciting series. Zeinab is a "modern" woman who demands freedom to make choices while Owen is a mother hen worried that his beloved might be hurt by those who scorn her marriage by an Englishman. They make quite a couple. The Egyptian culture during World War I is exquisitely detailed as if Michael Peace was there. All this wealth of information is adroitly used to enhance the who-done-it so that fans of historical novels and those of historical mysteries receive quite a treat.

Tasty recipes for healthy living..........2005-02-18
This is a must-have companion book to the Lean Bodies program! I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I found the recipes for entrees and side dishes to be the best. Some of the dessert recipes are a bit odd in the ingredients they require.
Out of 100 eating plans and then some, it's by far the BEST!.......1998-01-22
I read the book and started the plan 4 weeks ago. I exercise aerobically 4-6 times a week, do some light weight training three times a week. So far, I've lost 11 pounds, several inches, and almost two clothing sizes. I sleep wonderfully and have unbelievable energy. The cleanest I've eaten in 20 years.

Customer Reviews:
My new favorite cake book.......2007-04-05
I have a small collection of cake books and most of them sit on a shelf in the kitchen. I look at the pictures every now and then thinking how much fun it would be to create this cake or that cake, until I look at the recipe and then decide I have better things to do.
I received "Gorgeous Cakes" as a Christmas present and was encouraged by the short recipes. My first cake was their "Classic Victoria Sponge Cake" on page 34. It is such a simple recipe that I made this cake in no time -- twice. It is a great cake to make when you need a good dessert in a very short amount of time. All of the ingredients, except for perhaps the heavy cream and confectioners' sugar, are ones that you would probably already have in your kitchen. Using this cake recipe as a foundation you can start branching out into other options, either of your own creation or move onto one of the many cake varieties given in this book, still using the same sponge cake base.
My second cake was the "Rich lemon curd cake" and wow, it was really, really good. This one I needed a little help with and with two people, and the help of my newly purchased double boiler, (and it wasn't really that scary to use after all), I soon had an amazing cake to share. This cake book is great for people of all different levels of experience, from beginners (sponge cake) to more experienced bakers (iced lemon loaf with crystallized rose petals). You may want to have your computer around to look up different cooking terms. Many of their cakes seem to require an 8-inch spring form cake pan so you might want to pick up one of those before you get this book. My next cake is going to be the "Black Forest Victoria" a spin-off of the classic sponge cake. I'm really looking forward to this!

Beautiful illustrated book on cakes.
Book Description
"French industry has managed to render on paper not only all kinds of foliage, greenery, and landscape, but even seascapes and historical tableaux. The most brilliant colors, most delicate shades, most delightful and varied drawing, plus artistic skill and taste and the perfect imitation of nature, can now all be found in this kind of fabrication...The genius of the manufacturer who invented these wall hangings deserves both praise and encouragement, given the taste and perfection with which they are executed."--Sébastien Le Normand, 1822
Unrolled over the whole wall surface of a room, scenic wallpapers are an exclusively French creation which flourished through the first half of the nineteenth century. Offering an affordable alternative to tapestries or to the hand-painted fresco, these panoramic landscapes brought a romantic, dreamlike world into the living spaces of the bourgeoisie, breaking down the traditional barriers between interior and exterior, reality and utopia.
Among the subjects depicted are well-known Parisian monuments and famous sites together with mythological or romantic themes, inspired by the paintings and engravings most fashionable at the time. Manufacturers such as Zuber, Dufour, and Delicourt exported these wallpapers to the United States and all over Europe, where they decorated a wide variety of dwellings, from a modest boarding house (described by Balzac) to the Goncourts' dining room, from the salons of Swedish castles to princely residences in Madrid and Lisbon.
This authoritative work on the subject was first published in 1990 on the occasion of an exhibition at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris, creating new interest from the general public and design professionals alike. Now, fully updated and available for the first time in English, this magnificent volume offers a comprehensive, richly illustrated account for all those interested in this unique art. The book is completed by an exhaustive, illustrated inventory of all scenic wallpapers identified to date.

I have been trying to get this book for over a year - I kept ordering it and it kept getting delayed. But now that it's here *sigh* what a marvel! gorgeous, giant fold-out illustrations of ambitious rooms sets shown in great detail. The text is a little hard to follow, but there is some interesting information about the designs, and process of printing this huge panels.
Book Description
Heirloom-quality patterns selected from now-hard-to-find thread company leaflets include doilies and placemats composed of delicate floral motifs, lacy bedspreads, elegant tablecloths, more. Row-by-row instructions, abundance of photographs for all levels of crocheters. 35 projects.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful motifs.......2007-07-12
I don't know about other thread crocheters, but I have always loved crocheting motifs. Maybe it's the sense of accomplishment in a short amount of time as you complete one, then you complete 37 more to finish a project.
I just worked one project in this book and it was a little frustrating because the instructions were more complicated than normal (for me). But I've had this problem from the very beginning and so you learn to work around the difficulty. Hey! It's part of the intrigue/excitement when you make things with your hands.
Great book, more eye-candy for thread crocheting.
Classic American bed and table coverings, but not 'quick'........1999-06-24
Excellent resource for some of the classic, American patterns for table and bed. Again, not "quick", because the projects are large. Some are easy, but some are intermediate. None are truly complicated. Cloth on cover made by my grandmother & aunt in mid '40's...lovely. I see these patterns reproduced repeatedly in contemporary books.
Don't let the title fool you........1999-02-17
While some items in this book are easy, they are by no means quick. Most items listed are tablecloths and bedspreads with an occasional doily or placemat here and there. The motifs listed are beautiful especially the rose motif and the star-in-the-snow motif. Most of the materials are mercerized cotton and the needles are on the small size from size 9 to 11. It's a good book if you want to decorate your dining room table.
Book Description
90 beautiful patterns for lace tablecloths and placemats. Complete instructions, 134 illustrations, 39 diagrams. "If you are interested in creating lovely crocheted table linens for your home or as gifts you will enjoy this book." — Decorating and Craft Ideas.
Customer Reviews:
Elegant Crochet.......2006-01-31
I am really into crocheting with thread and this book did not disappoint or leave that "hunger" wanting. From simple to complicated. All beautiful patterns.
Gorgeous but problematic.......2005-02-28
A wonderful resource of vintage patterns for crocheted openwork. As most are based on the principle of joining numerous small pieces ("motifs"), the patterns are easily adapted to other uses, such as bedspreads, curtains, et cetera. Some of the simplest motifs can even be rendered in heavy yarn, lending a "period" touch to afghans for the home.
CAVEAT EMPTOR (buyer beware): the patterns are published as they appeared in their original formats, except that several booklets are gathered together in one binding. As such, MISTAKES IN THE ORIGINALS ARE NOT CORRECTED. Experience, skill, and good old ingenuity are sometimes needed to produce the required result. Fortunately the patterns are generously photographed (although NOT of digital quality!), so this is possible.
NOT FOR A BEGINNER or those who prefer not to work at tweaking a problematic pattern. I wish I could bestow three and a half stars: three stars because of the mistakes (the editor simply selected: original texts are not actually edited, nor is any errata page offered), but four stars because of scarcity of the material, which can no longer be found elsewhere.
Fabulous elegance!.......2000-04-05
This book is FULL of elegant lace tablecloths and placemats. If you are ready to dig into some thread crocheting, this book is for you. Crocheting tablecloths is a lost art, but there is nothing more elegant than a table set for dinner with your handmade tablecloth adorning it. The instructions are clear. There are plenty of varied projects to choose from. This book was given to me by a friend and it is now one of my favorites! Many of the projects are made using motifs plus there are many filet projects. In the book's 140 pages there are at least 160 different projects to choose from.

The Woman in the Window (MGM Film Noir)
ASIN: 081663548X |
Book Description
The long, colorful career of producer Walter Wanger (1894-1968) represents one of Hollywood's greatest untold stories. Married to actress Joan Bennett, he is perhaps best remembered for shooting his wife's lover in a Beverly Hills parking lot and for his involvement with the catastrophic Cleopatra. But Wanger was also an intellectual sophisticate whose astute skills as a producer have received remarkably little attention. A socially conscious movie executive responsible for such film classics as Queen Christina with Greta Garbo, John Ford's Stagecoach, Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent, and Don Siegel's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, he exemplified the figure of the glamorous, independent Hollywood producer.
Matthew Bernstein's lively and exhaustive study utilizes archival correspondence and interviews with film industry veterans, including Joan Bennett, director Robert Wise, and writer-director-producer Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Wanger's tempestuous career serves as an incomparable window into the process of filmmaking during the heyday of the studio system. Bernstein defines the flexible nature of the term "producer" in golden-age Hollywood and demonstrates how Wanger's efforts to produce films independently were often compromised by the omnipotent studio system. This comprehensive biography offers new insights into the producer's influence in the history of American cinema, and it makes for fascinating reading.
