At the heart of Pam Houston's tender novel Sight Hound is a surprisingly thoughtful three-legged Irish wolfhound named Dante. Convinced that it is his responsibility to teach the humans around him about love, he concentrates his efforts on his owner Rae. While the thought of a canine in the lead role may give many pause, in this case it shouldn't. Houston manages to pull this aspect of the story off with skill and is able to create a multi-dimensional character out of a cancer-riddled old dog. She's not quite as successful with the humans in her story, however, and the array of voices the story is told in quickly becomes confusing.
A decent novel on its own, Sight Hound may leave long-time Houston fans feeling a little cheated. Personal essays and short stories like those in Cowboy Are My Weakness and A Little More About Me stir the heart and endear readers to Houston's signature blend of over-the-top confidence and girlish insecurity. Fans will gobble this effort up while anxiously waiting for more from Houston, but readers new to her work might do better to start on her earlier titles. --Victoria Griffith
Book Description
The long-awaited novela very special love storyfrom the best-selling author of Cowboys Are My Weakness.
This is the story of a woman, Rae, and her dog, Dante, a wolfhound who teaches "his human" that love is stronger than fear (the dog has always known this). Dante is the catalyst for change in other characters as well, and they step forward with their narratives: Rae's house-tender; her therapist; two veterinarians; and an anxiety-ridden actor, Howard, who turns out to be as stalwart as Dante himself. As the "seer" who hunts by sight rather than smell, Dante has some things to add, as does Rose, another dog who lives at Rae's heels, and Stanley the cat. Among and above these myriad voices, Rae voices her own challenges.
With the wit and dead-on candor we've come to expect from Pam Houston, Sight Hound unfolds a story that illuminates the intangible covenant between loved ones. Here, dogs and humans are simply equal creatures, looking to connect and holding on for dear life when they do. Reading group guide included.

For anyone whose ever loved a dog...........2007-07-26
This book was a bit hard to get into, but grabbed me and held me tight soon thereafter. A must read for anyone whose ever loved a dog as much as a person. I loved the unique way she told the story from many perspectives, especially the dogs.
I really wanted to give this 5 stars.......2007-03-25
This book pulled my heart strings. I too lost my "soul mate" dog to bone cancer and it was eerie how many links there were to my real life. Hearing Dante talk was theraputic, I would dearly love to know what my dogs think. Rose describing her favourite treat couldn't have been put better! The emotional ups and downs between the humans and dogs are the best I've read and help put this book in my top 10.
I also loved Pam Houston's chapter in Dog is my Co-Pilot.
But the first chapter is tough (power through everyone it is worth it!) and the human characters are not real, they seem "Hollywood" (ie created for a television movie and manipulated).
Fall in love with Dante.......2007-01-10
This is one of my top 5 favorite books. Dante is a dog that you will fall in love with- one you will cry for- and one that will bring you hope. Houston shows with a unique perspective what our companion animals can bring to our lives.
Heart - felt gems of wisdom but lacking in convincing plot development.......2006-08-10
There is much to like about this book, but it is not ultimately as satisfying as it might have been. First, the many good things.
If you like dogs, know one, have one, would like to have one, then what's likeable about the book is the homage it pays to dogs and what they can do for people. For folks very rooted in empiricism, it may be a little over the top, because the dogs are given complex consciousness, understanding, and generosity. But for dog lovers, it can be fun to imagine that degree of complex thinking in our canine companions. The dogs are hard not to love.
The writing is light and funny. Great turns of phrase, irony, hyperbole, even jokes. So it's an amusing read.
The story touches on some poignant themes, especially the illness of the main dog character, an Irish wolfhound named Dante. There are two important aspects of this theme: the refinement of veterinary medicine through Dante as experimental treatment subject; and the emotional growth of Dante's owner Rae as she comes to terms with loving and losing her beloved Dante through illness and death.
Another appealing theme is Rae's progress through faulty love affairs to finally emerge with enough self-love to recognize a good love match when it comes her way. [Dante is given as much credit for this outcome as either of the human protagonists, and that's another bit of dog homage that may appeal to doglovers but might leave the uninitiated cold.]
Now the not so good aspects of this novel.
Another reviewer here made the point that there are lots of characters who speak and tell the story and that it can get confusing. I didn't share the confusion but I couldn't get interested in all the perspectives because some of the characters were not developed enough for me to care what they thought of things. They seemed like extraneous filler.
And that leads me to agree with yet another reviewer here that the voice and language or each character were not distinct. Several characters blended right in with each other so that it seemed to be the same perspective offered despite the different names assigned to the narrative.
Finally, the book had a good beginning and strong ending, but the middle part didn't seem to go anywhere. There is a suicide midway that doesn't seem related to other things going on in the book. There is a hockey player character who is too exaggerated to be either interesting or convincing. A drought that the main characters must endure conveys respect for nature and the characters' nostalgia for the beauty of the Colorado landscape. But because not all of the characters are well developed to be important, the novel reads like good, strong bookends holding up a library of only mild interest.
That said, I still recommend the book for the positive qualities I mentioned above, because it has moments that are moving, and because it is entertaining.
A Book For Dog Lovers.......2006-05-26
With the current glut of mystery/thriller fiction available, it is nice to see an auther explore thoughts, feelings, love and relationships, particularly those between human and animal.
The two Wolfhounds and the cat in this story are elegantly portrayed and very enjoyable. The humans for the most part are less believable and not as likeable.
I'd recommend this story for those who have lost a cherished four-legged family member, or those who fear losing the same.

bad book.......2007-04-12
I have read other books by this auther and this book was by far a big let down.
Terrible..........2006-10-30
This is a slapped together, rambling, superficial mystery, one of the worst I've read. There's little character development (some glittery details and some dispicable people, but no character developement). Each chapter focuses on a new character, more or less, most of whom have no functionality in
the forward draggy motion of the plot. There is some amusingly backbiting descriptions of the publishing world, though that's not enough to save the book. I guess it might, however, intrigue some of those immersed in the publishing world--hence the glowingly positive reviews from a few.
Whose PR dept. wrote some of the other reviews?.......2006-07-19
Anyone that has read this book needs to read these 5 star reviews and it is obvious they are connected to the author or the publishing company. This has been one of the best mystery series, and until recently, my favorite. The prior book in this series was getting a little weak. Nerds that Kill falls flat. The dialogue is canned, the last couple of chapters appear slammed together and make little sense, and overall a bit boring. I'm sorry to see this happen, but Paul Turner has clearly jumped.
Not that bad.......2005-12-28
I bought the book to be entertained and that is what I was. If you are looking for great literature then I would advise sticking with something else.
The same can be said for anyone looking for a police procedural. Afterall when Paul Turners son's sword turns out to be the murder weapon his boss should have pulled him from the investigation because of conflict of interest.
This is just an entertaining read. I basically read it in two settings and got some chuckles out of it.
The one word of criticism I have is that I had to pay a hardback price for it. Paperback would have been a better format as well as price for this.
bland and tedious mystery.......2005-09-25
I had never read a Paul Turner mystery and I doubt that I ever will read another one. This was a terrible book, tedious to read. Like many of the characters Zubro creates for this book, Zubro's writing is mildly interesting at best. Long lines of characters addressing the same issues...hardly the epitome of creativity.

Book Description
Each year in this country, 30 million men and their partners are robbed of an essential part of their lives when they are faced with sexual dysfunction due to diabetes, prostate cancer, an injury or psychological reasons. Many desperately want advice, but are too embarrassed to broach the subject with a doctor or even with each other.
In their timely and medically recognized book, Making Love Again, Virginia and Keith Laken give hope to these individuals who, like themselves, want to "feel normal" again.
Virginia tells the story of how she and her husband have dealt with his sexual dysfunction, brought on by a radical prostectomy at the age of forty-nine. She reveals the solutions that have brought them closer together, and offers further resources and support groups that can be found on both the Internet and through local and national organizations.
Making Love Again proves that it is possible to break free of one's pre-conceived ideas about sex, and to overcome impotency by continuing to make love in whatever form lovemaking may take.
With a foreward by Dr. David Barrett, CEO of the Lahey Clinic, readers will admire the medical community's acknowledgement of this book as an aid to couples seeking to regain physical intimacy.
Customer Reviews:
read this book together.......2006-05-02
This book is written by a husband and wife who continue to experience permanent impotence as a result of prostate cancer sugery. The book is structured like a "diary" with dated entires over a several-year period written separately by both husband and wife who are honest about their fears, disappointments and frustrations. It does not dwell on the surgery itself, but focuses on the post-surgical successes and disappointments as they try to engage in sexual relations using various options. It focuses on the loving relationship between the spouses, but it is also realistic about sexual needs -- from both partners' perspectives.
My husband is a young 65 and I am 46; we read this book out loud together about 9 months post-prostatectomy surgery, and it was tremendously helpful to both of us. After the surgery, the doctor had told us that impotence was unlikely in our situation, so we were not prepared for it. The book was particularly helpful with dealing with the disappointment we both felt in this regard. The book also helped us to see that most couples have to struggle with several alternatives for intimacy over a lengthy period and that not every option works for every couple.
The book was not at all preachy, but instead was subtly encouraging to my husband to be open to trying a wide variety of options that we probably would not have considered otherwise. (It does not suggest anything kinky). It gave us information that allowed us to resume [drug-induced] intercourse, which we believed was physically impossible.
A big relevation for me was that impotency is not always an "all or nothing" concept. I had no idea how discouraging it can be for a male who simply doesn't know whether he can or cannot physically perform -- or whether he will ever be able to.
The theme of the book is not to quit looking for satisfactory ways to experience intimacy and sexuality -- whatever that may look like in your personal situation. It does discuss a very intimate topic, but it does so in an honest way and it was not as difficult to read outloud together as I had expected. It gave us detailed information that we did not know and that we would never have felt comfortable asking for from our physician. Having read the book, we knew what the doctor was talking about when he suggested various options.
I definitely recommend this book, regardless of the reason for the impotence issues. I think it would be most useful for a couple -- it is written by and for heterosexual couples, but it would be equally applicable to homosexual couples as well. In my opinion, the book would be less useful for singles, although it could be helpful for a single female who is considering or is in a relationship with a male with impotence issues.
Great Book.......2006-03-20
This is a great book on the subject of impotence. I am an 8 year Prostate Cancer survivor and this book tells it like it is. Virginia and Keith are to be commended for sharing the intimate details of their recovery.
This is great information for anyone dealing with the effects of prostate cancer. It provides a roadmap for working through the side effects of most prostate cancer treatments.
I've Found Real Hope After 14 Years.......2004-06-15
14 years after my husband's first diagnosis of prostate cancer I learned several facts in this book, but, most important, for the first time it has made me begin to believe that things CAN be different for us if we both choose to work at it.
Diagnosis. Treatment he chose and I said I'd support was radiation and we *thought* we'd been told about all the possible longterm effects. NOT SO! Six years later I saw a vital, athletic, physical man feeling totally becoming afraid of, tense about, uninterested in our previously-fabulous sex life. Finally, this week when I read this book, we learned that some impotence develops much later from radiation than from surgery, but it *will* develop!
Then depression. Deep. Sullen. Withdrawal from interests and from me. Our physician prescribed medication and counseling. The counselor saw him *once* and said, "Go home and don't be so passive!" Flat, flat affect. No joy. But he kept *trying*, bless him!
Then four years ago recurrence! It took my husband
over 6 months to choose a treatment and he only did so then because our doctor and I insisted on it! Surgery. At our city's outstanding cancer center. SUCCESS. His PSA is undetectable.
He does have some mild incontinece.
The surgery team introduced us to Muse. It worked 90% for us and the team was very excited for us. We used it once. Once in 3 1/2 years! From then on my husband has just refused to act on sex, talk about sex.
I've tried everything. I've begged my husband to return to the team and ask them for direction. He couldn't bring himself to do that. We grew farther and farther apart. My heart was breaking. I felt unattractive and sad and rejected.
Last week I read this book. I finished it in two sittings. And I was deeply touched and am now full of hope and new courage. When I handed it to my husband I only said that it was the most important thing that has happened to us in 14 years. I said it has touched me deeply and asked him to read it this week so we can discuss it next weekend. He promised he will read it tonight.....but, interestingly, he has gone to bed early not feeling well. Whether it's another "avoiding" or a real headache I won't know but a few days. But I really believe that when he does read it he will see he's not alone. He'll see we are not alone.
Right now I'm going to order several copies. I'll give one to each of our adult children so they'll know where we've been in our marriage. One will go to our surgery team to share with patients. Another will go to our family doctor so she can read it and have more personal knowledge of what prostate couples go through.
This is one of the five most important books in my life.
Sensitive, insightful, helpful for those facing impotency.......2002-12-25
For Virginia the decision seemed easy, Keith's fear of becoming impotent from the prostatectomy was irrational in relation to the possibility of dying. How could he even think that being able to have sex was as important as living? For Keith the decision was not as easy. With his male ego wrapped up in the decision and the importance of being able to have sex with his wife it just was not as simple. After deciding in favor of the operation there was a lot of adjustments to be made and Virginia found that things were a lot more complex than she had imagined.
In "Making Love Again", Virginia and Keith Laken invite the reader into their personal lives and the difficulties they faced as a result of his prostatectomy. Their thoughts, fears, hopes, and disappointments are laid bare to the reader as they openly discuss deeply personal questions and feelings. If you ever wanted to know what it is like to deal with impotence in a marital relationship this book deals with the emotional struggles that are not normally discussed openly. The power of a loving commitment, strength for the challenge, and hope shine through as well as a true commitment to help others through the copious listing of sources of help in the appendix.
Readers should be cautioned that because this book necessarily discusses sexual intimacy between two people some may find it too graphic at points. On the other hand, it shows the extent to which the authors are letting the reader into their personal lives. "Making Love Again" is a very highly recommended book for those going through concerns about a prostatectomy or any sudden impotency of a permanent or temporary nature.
Glad to have someone to share with.......2002-09-30
My husband and I have been secretly dealing with some issues that have been genuinely dicussed in this book. It was great to get "real" and say it like it is and also to know that I share with her experience. We both read it the first day it arrived and we really got a lot of comfort from knowing this is how others think and react. Like the author, we have a special relationship based on trust, freindship and committment. Not sex! That true love has enable us to remain strong, united and loving.
Thank you for sharing, you have given us some ideas and certainly peace that we are not the only one!

Exceptional Cookbook.......2000-06-14
One of the few books I've been able to find on vegetable (not vegetarian) cooking. The author explains in detail how to select, store and cook a variety of vegetables, organized by season. Her recipes are somewhat out of the ordinary, but most don't take a lot of extra effort, allowing you to add variety to otherwise dull vegetable side dishes without straining your allotted budgets of time and cash. She also offers guidelines and suggestions for other sauce and garnish options aside from her recipes, as well as suggestions for matching the vegetable side dish with a main dish that will complement its flavors and textures. All in all it is an excellent cookbook, standing out particularly among the (very few) cookbooks on similar subject matter. This is not a cookbook for vegetarians, but rather one for those of us who want to add more vegetables to our diet to compliment the main dishes we love.

Easy for a beginner.......2007-08-27
I first came across this book in the library years ago, and was hooked solely on the pictures. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and I bought it, remembering the pictures. This time, I actually read it through, having a better idea about jewelry. This book is good for a beginner, because it talks about how rubies and sapphires are chemically the same but the color gives them different names, and the special qualities of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. I own many Colombian emeralds that belonged to my Colombian grandmother, so I was able to turn around and look at pieces I own, and understand the context of the book. I also learned the wonderful qualities of these popular colored stones, from cuts, to acceptable clarity, and valuble color variations. For someone who wants something easy to read, easy to understand, and has fabulous pictures, I would recommend this book.
A high quality book with facts about the three most important coloured stones........2007-04-11
An good insight into the trade for the consumer. It is easy-to-read, filled with great colour pictures, and with descriptions in everyday language that even the non-professional can easily understand. I recommend it to everyone.
For further important reading i suggest You coplete Your collection with the Enhancement-books by the author Ted Themelis (please search with the name of the Author to find the books in question).
This book is not serious ........2005-09-16
I was hoping for a more serious book with new facts and price evaluations. At least show examples and more pictures.
The author did a very bad job with this book its childish and not informing anything special even the internet can give you better stuff to read .
DONT BUY THIS BOOK

Book Description
From Hoboken to Hollywood, Frank Sinatra was always a larger-than-life package of talent, charisma, and controversy. Singers had been big before, but there had never been a sensation like the young Sinatra. He drove the women wild, then drove his career into the ground. He lived a life of monumental drama and intrigue: Was there truth to the mob rumors? (Some.) Were the suicide attempts over Ava Gardner real? (One of them was.) Did he really split with Jack Kennedy over something as small as a snub? (Sure he did.) And then: the ferocious comeback that secured his status as an icon of the highest order; one of the towering figures of the American century.
And then: the ferocious comeback that secured his status as an icon of the highest order-one of the towering figures of the American century. "Nobody's ever been a bigger star than me," Sinatra said as a young man. "This'll never end." Well, it has, finally, for him. But for those of us left behind, there is the incomparable music. And the movies. And now, thanks to these pictures and reminiscences from the editors of LIFE, vivid memories of the extraordinary life and times of Francis Albert Sinatra.

Sinatra in pictures...need I say more?.......2002-04-23
They say a picture's worth a thousand words. Well, the pictures in this book are worth millions. Some are in black and white and others are in color but ALL portray Frank Sinatra as he was - without the sugar coating. The pictures gave me a whole new take on Sinatra's life. I found out things I never knew before about his personality, his devotion to his music, his late night parties and his temper. I recommend this book to anyone, not just Sinatra fans, who wants to get an insight on this legend's life through the beautiful photos of Life magazine.
