Book Description
An Arab and a Jew open a restaurant together across the street from the United Nations....
It sounds like the beginning of an ethnic joke, but it's the axis around which spins this gutsy, fun-loving, and alarmingly provocative novel, in which a bean can philosophizes, a dessert spoon mystifies, a young waitress takes on the New York art world, and a rowdy redneck welder discovers the lost god of Palestine--while the illusions that obscure humanity's view of the true universe fall away, one by one, like Salome's veils.
Skinny Legs and All deals with today's most sensitive issues: race, politics, marriage, art, religion, money, and lust. It weaves lyrically through what some call the "end days" of our planet. Refusing to avert its gaze from the horrors of the apocalypse, it also refuses to let the alleged end of the world spoil its mood. And its mood is defiantly upbeat.
In the gloriously inventive Tom Robbins style, here are characters, phrases, stories, and ideas that dance together on the page, wild and sexy, like Salome herself. Or was it Jezebel?

For long-time fans only.......2007-09-23
Ok, so I love TR just as much as I love HST, maybe more. His giddy sense towards the mundane coupled with his prevailing innate view of the true way of things makes him my very own rockstar. However, this book was a disappointment for me. My favs are "Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates" and "Jitterbug Perfume." This book could have been written today. I wish that it was and I wish everyone would read it. My chagrin comes from the end. It built such a frenzy within me, I needed an ending. I needed a "Woodpecker" explosion. Whereas Hunter always buoyed me, even at his darkest, I am at times left wanting by TR. I agreed with each of Ellen Cherry's realizations during the dance of the seven veils - they were absolute and knee-shattering. It was lost however as a climax - the fire began the denouement and that was it. Still love TR, but am not quite so pleased with this one.

More of Robbin's trademark whackiness to be found here, and perhaps even moreso with his invention of a bigarse mobile home/caravan and its turkey shapeshifting type abilities.
Thrown in with all the fantasy and sex is some commentary on religious whackos and politics, which isn't too bad.
Must Read........2007-05-19
Tom Robbins knows where it's at. Everything is sacred, yet nothing is. If you need to relax and stop taking life so seriously, grab a book from this author.
Debunking an American myth.......2007-05-12
Any novelist can use a thesaurus, but few contemporary novelists mix tomfoolery and philosophy with the magic and mayhem of Tom Robbins. In Skinny Legs and All, Robbins puts Middle Eastern politics under a prismatic lens, shedding an interesting light on art, religion, sex and consumerism in the process.
This novel was my first experience with Tom Robbins, a man that I now find to be the most trail-blazing, barn-burning of authors. He has a gift for stringing words together, weaving them poetically into great metaphors and larger-than-life characters, all the while crafting this poetry into a story that reminds and re-educates us of our myths and cultures.
And Skinny Legs and All is Tom Robbins at his best.
INSPIRATION TO LIVE.......2006-07-31
This book is amazing, incredible, inspiring. The story line is interesting, but what was wonderful about the book was the way Robbins used the 7 veils idea and Salome's dance to reveal some fundamental truths about the world that we live in. As usual, Robbins is able to so eloquently describe these truths, more so than any other author i've read. Its like a bible of love and hope and nature - it draws the curtain on ideas and philosophy behind money, sex, love, nature, and life. It is a book of revelation, of hope, of sunlight and thunderstorms, and ultimately of inspiration. It made me want to live life, and live it in a new and healthy and loving way.
I wish everyone could read this book and be as inspired as I was, and maybe our world would change just a little.

It is just crying to be used as a Hollywood script.......2004-01-15
Maureen Sarsfield wrote a total of three books, which were picked up by American publishers, in the 1940's. Two of them are murder mysteries starring Scotland Yard's Inspector Lane Parry, a handsome and undeniably married detective. Murder at Beechlands, the sequel to Murder at Shots Hall (originally called Green December Fills the Graveyard) was originally called A Party for None in England and A Party for Lawty in the United States. Sarsfield's life itself is a bit of a mystery, as no one seems to know what became of her.
Inspector Lane Parry finds himself alone in a raging blizzard after he accidently drove his car into a ditch. He comes upon Beechlands, a hotel filled with what he at first takes to be inmates of a mental institution. But the dead body of Wing Commander Lawton (Lawty) Lawrence appears in the snow, and the hunt is on. Even though the crime is not in Parry's jurisdiction, he realizes he is going to have to keep the "inmates" around until the proper authorities can be called...and the phone lines have been cut to the hotel:
"Two miles there, two miles back. That would mean leaving all these people (and Lawty's body) by themselves, to get up to their own devices and occasions, lawful or unlawful, for at least two hours, by the time he'd done explaining everything to the Ditchit policeman, who was worse than useless, according to Miss Killigrew."
Murder at Beechlands is a cross between an Alfred Hitchcock story, and an Edgar Allen Poe tale. Intensely psychological, each character and each moment of the ungodly long night that follows the murder is filled with lurking, crashing, smashing, and deep fear. Sarsfield does a great job of keeping the reader "in the dark," even as she supplies clues and counter clues for the clever Inspector Parry to sift through. Her characterization is simply wonderful...very nineteen forties, and one could see either Betty Davis or Marilyn Monroe in starring roles.
The Rue Morgue Press has chosen wisely once again with this Maureen Sarsfield thriller. It is just crying to be used as a Hollywood script, but until that day arrives (if it ever does), it simply exists as a genuine mystery told in the original vein of the genre. A great read!

Mark of Damnation.......2004-09-13
In this episode of Warhammer, we find ourselves following the promising army officer Karl Hoche on the downward spiral of destruction. After discovering corruption within the ranks of the trusted Knights Panther Karl is sent to bring word to the proper authorities.
If you learn nothing else from me, know this...NEVER trust anyone! Chaos is insidious and you never know where its tendrils may take root. Karl narrowly escapes death at the hands of the Knights Panther and is enlisted by the secret order of the Untersuchung. After completing the rigorous training he is sent to find the location of a missing agent. Along the way he is betrayed at every turn ( `cause he didn't listen to me) and finds himself becoming that which he seeks to destroy.
Infected by chaos Karl must find the source of the evil and destroy it before it subjugates him completely, before it takes over his entire world.
Conspiracies in the world of Warhammer (Yummy).......2003-06-10
I never heard of James Wallis before I picked this book. I chose it because I am a Warhammer fan. It was refreshing and new compared to other Warhammer novels in the way that it managed to portray a rather realistic story in the Imagined world of Warhammer.Plot & Storytelling: The story is of a young army officer, 'Karl Hoche', in the service of the emperor who stumbles upon the work of chaos cultists within the army. This unlucky encounter forces him to join a secret service of the empire for rooting out dangerous conspirators. He becomes sort of a secret agent (not of a Ian Fleming's James bond style but more of a field agent in one of Tom Clancy's novels ). The story has many surprising twists (I won't say too much as I do not wish to spoil the fun) and is hard to put down. There are some gruesome events of violence in this book (torture), but Wallis doesn't feel he needs to delve into the gory details in order to give his readers a good experience (unlike popular writers such as Terry Goodkind ). He does a good job in enticing the readers curiosity and imagination.
Action: Warhammer books always contain a lot of action (after all this is what this game is all about). 'Mark of Damnation' doesn't fall short in this category though it is more of the realistic kind. Our hero when faced with three opponents would choose to flee. This is definitely not another William King's slayer book for that matter.
Characters: The main character 'Karl Hoche' is developed quite nicely. As he confronts the many situations in the story his entire world view is twisted and shutters. He begins as a simple soldier (son of a priest to the god Sigmar) whom sees the world in the shades of black and white. Along the way everything he knows to be right is tested, even his faith in the gods. James Wallis tackles this with style and grace as to not make it too tedious. The other characters are mostly one dimensional, though Wallis creates a charming and intriguing bunch of them come to life. A rather gay undercover agent, a cynical and depressed spymaster to serve as Hoche's tutor just to name few. To sum it up, I think this is a five story book. And it made me look forward to delving into other works by James Wallis.

Vibrators for Sale!.......2007-09-11
This book does an excellent job of explaining everything you ever wanted to know about vibrators but that begs the question: How much do you really need to know? If you are smart enough to bake brownies, you can navigate "Sex Toys 101" without a tutor. Perhaps the detailed explanations would help the completely clueless torn between battery vs. plug-in or front-door vs. back-door but this book is really a cloaked vibrator advertisement so here's a hint: Good Vibrations' beautiful catalog and excellent web site fully explain most of the practical information in this book. Bonus: both are free!
Sex toys without the sleaze.......2001-10-18
If you're even thinking about buying a vibrator, buy this slim volume first, and you could save yourself a lot of time, frustration and money (and the same is true if you've already bought your first vibrator but are looking to invest in another ... or another ...).
Joani Blank, founder of the legendary "Good Vibrations" feminist sex shop, has made it her life's mission to take the sleaze and embarrassment out of sex toys, and to provide women (and men) with honest, friendly information to help them pick their way through the vast range of products, ranging from the shoddy to the wonderful, that the "adult toy" industry has to offer. This book gives you a "guided tour" of the many different types of vibrator and helpful advice on how to choose the one that's right for you (and what to do with it once you've got it).
Whether you're looking for a vibrator to help you to orgasm for the first time, or to spice up an already wonderful sex life (or anything in between) - think of this book as the product guide that you won't ever find in a consumer magazine!
Okay for beginners.......2001-04-27
This book is pretty good, but it's only useful if you don't already have a vibrator. The authors don't explain techniques really; it's more about why people use a vibrator and what each type does. I read this book in about an hour - it's so thin!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-09-09
The first three reviews all gave "The Essential Baker" top 5-star ratings and, frankly, I was impressed and ordered the book. However, my elation quickly turned to disappointment once I scanned the pages. The first 50 pages on baking essentials had brown text on a light brown background and the remainder of the book, the text remained brown on white rather than black on white. Moreover, the font style and small size in addition to the brown text made reading difficult for a senior citizen as myself. This difficulty was more pronounced since the ingredients listed on the left margin were in bold type whereas the instruction were not, thus I personally would find difficulty in using the book while trying to cook.
One thing the author mentions up front is that all her recipes use Extra-Large eggs and every recipe for making pie dough uses a food processor. Just be aware to adjust your thinking. The book is hefty with 220 pages devoted to fruits, 21 to vegetables, 48 to nuts and seeds, and 125 to chocolate, 29 to dairy, 45 to spices and herbs, and 50 to coffee, tea, and spirits. The way the recipes are formatted, as discussed in prevous comments, are unique and at times it takes three to four pages for a recipe such as Pumpkin Pie or Lemon Meringue Pie.
In comparing the recipe for Anise and Almond Biscotti (Carole Bloom vs Martha Stewart), for example, Bloom calls for 3 extra-large eggs and 3 extra large egg yolks, but no butter and Stewart calls for 4 large eggs and 4 tablespoons of butter (both use 2-1/4 and 2-1/2 cups of flour respectively. I would have to bake each recipe to determine which I preferred, but someone like Alton Brown (author of, "I'm Here Just for the Food") could tell you the pros and cons of eggs vs butter.
If I had to choose an all round baking book, my choice would be, "The Dessert Bible" by Chrisopher Kimball who is also Publisher and Editor of Cooks Illustrated. His recipes include a feature that explains "what could go wrong" explaining things that could go awry whch I found helpful.
Bloom incorporates some innovative features in laying out her baking techniques and no doubt has many excellent recipes, but I downgraded the book primarily on "mechanical" features rather than content and the fact that I personally find the book difficult to use.
Unique & Delicious Recipes.......2007-08-09
"The Essential Baker: The Comprehensive Guide to Baking with Chocolate, Fruit, Nuts, Spices and Other Ingredients" is a new book by Carole Bloom, who is a professional pastry chef and confectioner. As the title promises the contents include an impressive array of recipes that use everything from coffee & tea to vegetables & fruits as their main ingredients. More than this, however, Bloom's recipes are unique, with a dash of sliced almonds adding both flavor and texture to banana muffins and pearl sugar enhancing the visual appeal of apple turnovers. I loved her recipes for coconut biscotti, jasmine tea cakes and spiced sugar coin cookies. Indeed, though I usually give away most of the goodies I bake, I couldn't bring myself to share the biscotti with anyone other than my husband. On a few occasions I wasn't entirely thrilled with the way a recipe turned out, but given my delight with other recipes I have to chalk this up to taste. One cannot expect every single recipe in a book to enthrall, after all, and modifications can always be made to suit your preferences.
Bloom's instructions are clear and easy to follow, though the way ingredients are presented took some getting used to. Instead of listing ingredients before the recipe, as most cookbooks do, recipes are divided into stages with the ingredients for each stage listed beside the instructions. At first I didn't like this aspect of the book, but as I continued to cook with it I realized that this arrangement a) forced me to read through the entire recipe before beginning, I'm a notorious improviser, and b) made it nearly impossible to become confused about which ingredient should be used where. Essential gear is listed along side the recipe, where helpful information is also included: storage tips, variations, and instructions for streamlining the baking process over more than one afternoon (i.e. How to begin cookies one day and finish them the next.) While I'm always appreciative of baking books that have photos for every recipe, the straightforward presentation of Bloom's recipes made it easy to visualize the final result without an image. Photos for twenty recipes are collected in the center of the book, representing the various chapters, which include: fruit & vegetables; nuts & seeds; chocolate; dairy products (milk, cream, cheeses); spices & herbs; and coffee, tea, liqueurs & spirits. The first chapter is devoted entirely to baking techniques, language and an overview of essential baking gear.
Recipes range in difficulty from easy to challenging, so this may not be the best book for a novice baker. Yet those with baking experience and a curiosity for novel recipes may want to check it out. From Key Lime Squares and Raspberry-Blueberry Galettes to Pomegranate Butter Cookies and Triple Vanilla Souffle, there is something in this book to pique everyone's interests.
An excellent general manual for occasional baker. Buy It........2007-05-11
`The Essential Baker' by professional pastry chef and culinary writer, Carole Bloom presents itself as a complete baking manual, with a distinctively different organization, by ingredient. For its size, price, and claims, the book begs us to compare it to the recent `Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook', which is also a comprehensive introductory baking text.
As I first open the book, Bloom's `Essential Baker' does not readily impress me when stacked up against Team Stewart. Like Stewart, the book does not delve into a lot of the more technical explanations of baking science (as one may find in Rose Levy Beranbaum's more advanced `Bibles' on baking technique), but then the average baker really doesn't need most of this, as long as they get the message that with baking, one really needs to follow the recipe closely, even down to the size of the baking pans. Bloom does go into just a bit more detail, and may get herself into a few questionable statements, as when she states that one should not use all purpose flour for baking bread (every book I've ever seen on bread baking uses and condones `all purpose flour', with a preference for the higher protein products such as those from King Arthur.)
Based on their enormous magazine publishing resources, it's no surprise to find Team Stewart's book with wonderful pictures all along the way, especially with good series of tutorials on some basic techniques. Ms. Bloom oddly has virtually no pictures, and all she has are in two middle of the book rotogravure sections, to keep the cost down.
Two more comparisons tend to favor Team Stewart. The first is that their organization is by end product and method rather than by principal ingredient. For an introductory manual, I simply find that more useful and intuitive. Unlike savory cooking, one is much more inclined to begin with `lets bake a cake' or `lets make a pie' or `lets make some cookies' or `lets make some bread'. One of the few cases where this may not be true is with some highly seasonal local ingredients such as rhubarb. Otherwise, my baking choices are largely based on birthdays needing cake, picnics needing pies, and Christmas needing cookies. The second is that Ms. Bloom does not cover yeast breads at all. There are recipes for quick breads such as biscuits and Irish Soda bread (under the subject of buttermilk), but that's it. Team Stewart has a 70 page chapter on yeast breads with 31 recipes, including muffins, bagels, pizza, Danish, croissants, and babkas. If this were the whole story, Team Stewart would have it all over Ms. Bloom. Ms. Bloom, however, has an ace up her sleeve.
Only after reading the long and highly informative (but pictureless) introductory chapters in `The Essential Baker' did I discover that Ms. Bloom is hiding her light under a basket. While celebrating her ordering by ingredient, she neglects to trumpet the fact that her method for writing recipes is really superior. Everything is laid out in exactly the way one may wish to find it. And, on this count, she has Team Stewart beat hands down. But that's not all. I also find her recipes to be more interesting (albeit not necessarily more complicated) than those from Team Stewart. I compared at least a half dozen recipes and in all cases, Ms. Bloom had the more satisfactory recipe for the beginner. Stewart either tended just a bit too much to the simple or overembellished to fit her overriding motif of cooking for entertaining.
I'm still inclined to see Stewart's `Baking Handbook' as the superior book for the beginner, except for the fact that Ms. Bloom does something that is rare in bigger baking books. She does not `divide and conquer' by separating all her utility recipes for crusts and other pastries in a separate section, so that one must constantly be flipping back and forth when doing a pie or an icing. This is really an exceptionally good thing for the occasional baker, who wants `the recipe, the whole recipe, and nothing but the recipe' in one place.
And, although both books retail for $40, Ms. Bloom has about 200 more pages, with a corresponding 30% more recipes. She also has an exceptionally good list of sources, the best I've seen in quite some time (although Miss Martha does a good job here too).
On the arrangement by ingredient, I'm still a bit agnostic about it, and it would have been nice to see a supplementary table of contents by type of recipe, but if you happen to really like books such as Aliza Green's `Starting With Ingredients' or books on vegetable or fish cookery, you will love this book. Otherwise, you may just like it very, very much.
Viva Coconut Biscotti.......2007-04-14
Though I love to cook and entertain, I seldom bake. Somehow, in planning my meals, dessert is often an afterthought. Thus, when a friend gave me Carole Bloom's latest tome, The Essential Baker: The Comprehensive Guide to Baking with Chocolate, Fruit, Nuts, Spices, and other ingredients, I thanked her profusely and thought I would relegate the exhaustive 650 page book to the upper reaches of my kitchen shelf. Last week, in need of an easy dessert recipe, the stunning chocolate madeleines on Bloom's book cover came to mind. What delights might I find within its pages, I wondered? I thumbed through it, looking for something simple to complement a bowl of fresh strawberries. The Coconut Biscotti on page 229 caught my eye.
I followed Bloom's instructions to the letter. The author of Chocolate Lovers' Cookbook for Dummies, among eight other books, made it all the easier thanks to her clever organization: ingredients and their corresponding usage are laid out side by side on the page rather than one following the other as is usually the case. I assembled the dough in minutes, shaped it into two loaves as instructed, and popped them in the oven. I waited for them to cool before slicing them into biscotti, and returned them to the oven a few minutes longer. Twenty minutes later, "my" biscotti looked like those sold by the piece at an extravagant price in upscale coffee shops--sweet and crumbly and ready for dunking. "Those are the best biscotti I have ever tasted," opined my husband, a cookie connoisseur from way back.
The Essential Baker may not turn me into a pro but the clarity of recipes inspire me to try the Cherry Clafouti(page 61) and the Pineapple Tarte Tatin (page 247). I may even read through Bloom's extensive Baking Essentials section to expand my newfound skills!

This book not only has great recipes but some really wonderful information. It helps understand the ingredients used, the tools necessary and some great techniques for making the best cookies. I am really glad I got this book. Living abroad makes it a bit more difficult to find some of the ingredients but the ingredient substitutions cheat sheet and the measurement equivalents (sticks of butter are not available everywhere you know)still allowed me to enjoy the recipes.

Chocolate Bliss for the Home Chocolatier.......2003-03-11
Carole Bloom says that this book is "all about pleasure" on page 1. This 200-page book includes recipes and techniques for making a wide variety of candy and chocolates right in your own home.
The book is organized topically into chapters: Introduction, Ingredients, Equipment and Tools, Techniques, Truffles, More Chocolate Candies, Caramel Candies, Nut Brittles and Marzipan, Fudge Nougat and Divinity, Fruit Candies and an Appendix of Sugar Stages/Temperatures/Weights and Measurement Equivalents.
Using the chapters on techniques and ingredients, even the beginner will be able to create luscious truffles at home. While there are only 11 photographs in the book, the equipment chapter has several drawings that will enable you to locate the right tool.
Each recipe includes a brief introduction, an expected yield, a list of ingredients, paragraph-style instructions on how to prepare the recipe, and variations. Recipes include Tropical Clusters, Swiss Chocolate Truffles, and Florentines.
From the basic to the exotic, you are sure to find the candy recipe you need in this little book.
If you like truffles..........2000-02-22
This book has excellent, easy to follow recipes. I made 5 batches of different truffles for Valentine's Day gifts, and they were very well received. If you have not worked with chocolate before, I recommend also purchasing 'The Art of Chocolate' by Elaine Gonzalez. The techniques of chocolate handling are explained in detail. When these techniques are combined with Ms. Bloom's recipes, it was a fun and easy endeavor.

Originality & Taste Matters!.......2006-12-20
For others to make such harsh & negative reviews one can only conclude that Cakes in Bloom may very well be on to something special, and could very well be a threat to the other gateau makers. Actually, having sampled cake from one of the many frou frou cake makers, my taste buds clearly smacked of Betty Crocker, except it was far from the moist. Personally what a cake looks like outside and how it tastes makes all the difference in the world. The many cake designers using typical, decorative hard paste icing cakes for me has become a bit passe, not to forget, unpleasing to the palate. Anna von Marburg must have something that no one else has...could it be originality and taste!? Mais oui!
Sloppy and Unprofessional.......2006-08-20
For the few ideas you might get from this book, it's not worth the price. You can find better ideas from many other authors. The work, as others have noted, is pretty unforgivably sloppy. I would be embarrassed to deliver many of the cakes pictured. And there's an interesting little copyright caveat that all the ideas belong to the author and are not to be used by others. Well, who would want to, anyway?
NOT for Wilton method die-hards!.......2004-09-02
I'm surprised at the aggressively negative reviews I find of this book! Why fans of traditional cake decorating find a book like this creative gem so threatening, I don't know.
Meanwhile, back to the book: one of the stars in my cake decorating collection for its creativity and passion and its distinct LACK of traditional, predictable work. The color-by-numbers type of decorators might find Von Marburg's style impossible to emulate (is that the threat?) but some of us welcome her addition to this genre with open arms since she alone swings the average of this art decidedly in a free-er, looser direction. She's the one extreme and Lesley Herbert is the other and we're all free to find the point on that continuum which suits us the most...
Von Marburg is not for decorators who feel that perfect piping and stringwork is the end-all, be-all. She is what French country cooking is to haute cuisine -- a whole different world and far, far more fun.
Sorry, but this one isn't very good..........2004-06-02
I saw this one at the bookstore and was just leafing through it and nothing really caught my eye, but I decided to come here and get some opinions on it to see if it was worth a second look; it wasn't surprising what I found. I went back and looked again to check on the complaints and sure enough, the photos in this book are pretty bad. It is true that they are set at odd angles and that the cakes themselves...many of them do appear to look sloppy.
I didn't see any cake designs that interested me anyway.
I am grateful to have this site to check up on books (like this one) and save my money although I do hope the author tries again with something better-just to balance out this dog of a book.
cakes in bloom.......2004-05-30
I have a large collection of cake decorating books and I like this one very much. The author has created a number of cakes easy to make for a fairly experienced cake maker which are extraordinarily artistic. I like her book and those by Colette more than any others. People who like perfectly crafted traditional cakes may disagree but I think these two authors are in a class by themselves.

Tweedy Nails It!.......2000-04-13
Jim Tweedy has hit another homer with his latest on Charlie the RedCat. The paintings and writings are hilarious, and the book is beautiful. If you have a cat, or any pet with a spicy and unique personality, you'll identify with Charlie and love this book. This guy obviously has a great sense of humor and a real gift for conveying it. END
