Book Description

There are a lot of things
worse than being Slightly Engaged . . .
being entirely broke, completely alone and wholly perplexed.

It's been a year and a half since Tracey and Jack moved in together, and everything's totally perfect -- well, okay, almost perfect. There's still Tracey's mom, who says they're "living in sin," and her friends, who are all smug, married and totally sure that there would already be a ring on Tracey's finger if she hadn't been in such a rush to cosign a lease. Even Tracey is beginning to wonder whether Jack really is looking for a permanent relationship, or whether she's just renting space in his heart.

But just when Tracey's doubts are seriously raging out of control, Jack's mom lets her in on a secret -- he's just taken an heirloom diamond out of the family's safe-deposit box, which must mean that he's going to propose any day now.

Okay, any week now . . .

Any month now?

3 out of 5 stars book review.......2007-07-06

I was so disappointed! I LOVE Tracy in her past two books but this one seemed to try too hard. It got corny, repetitious, and a bit over the top humor. I felt Tracy would go on FOREVER with her thoughts and the book just seemed to drag.

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2007-06-12

After giving us a woman that grappled with her self-worth, and was growing stronger and stronger by the page in the first two novels, this book had our dear Tracey slinking back into a pathetic loser.

As other reviewers have said, she is a whiner to the nth degree. She also has a complete lack of supportive girlfriends. Every time she interacted with her female "friends" I cringed. With friends like that, who needs enemies.

2 out of 5 stars Kinda drags, but overall an okay read.......2007-06-06

I read this book before reading any of her other ones (i.e. Slightly Single, which I believe comes before Slightly Engaged)...and unfortunately it left me questioning if I was going to read any more of them! Sure, when it wasn't dragging and repeating itself it was a good read. It really did have its moments. But boy, did it drag. I feel like every 4th sentence was was some version of "Maybe he'll proposed today," and it really dragged at times. Still, if you don't mind skimming every so often, give it a try and a rainy day when you have nothing else to do.

2 out of 5 stars so disappointing and annoying.......2007-06-05

I really liked the first 2 books. But this book kept repeating the same things! I got tired of hearing about her ex Will , her wanting to be engaged to Jack and that thing about not having enough tomatoes in her salad seemed to go on too long. I really had to skim a lot of pages to get thru this. I was also disappointed in the way it ended. Still, I know I will end up reading the next book with hope that Wendy Markham will write it like she did the first two.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2007-01-18

the author seems to have talent in writing great romance novels, like other works of her such as BRIDE NEEDS GROOM and ONCE UPON A BLIND DATE have proven. All show good character development and a great storyline in general which gives you this " I can't put it down" feeling, since you want to know what happens next.

Unfortunately this book is nothing like that, it is in fact nothing else but a major disappointment.
Here we have a single woman in her mid twenty's who blabs on about how desperate she is about getting married to her boyfriend of two years. She talks about nothing else but waiting for him to propose already after having found out from his mother that he has the family's inheritance diamond ring and this goes on for 336 pages!

It is unclear if they even love each other and plan to spend the future together as the couple themselves never talks about it. The main character Tracy is displayed as a pretty pathetic looser with absolutely no self esteem who can't thing of anything but getting married. And the irony of that is that she mentioned several time that she does not want to become one of those women; well if she is not the worst one of all, then who is?

In the end of course Jack proposes in the most unglamorous way possible out on the street on a rainy day and she says yes, end of book.

For mystery lovers and literary connoisseurs alike, 2000 was a year of loss. Gone are two masters of language, one with over 30 works to his credit (George V. Higgins), the other with only four (Sarah Caudwell). It is some comfort that each gave readers one last glimpse of literary skill before passing on: Higgins (At End of Day) captured the way people really speak; Caudwell captured the way many people would dearly love to speak. Her first three novels (The Shortest Way to Hades, Thus Was Adonis Murdered, The Sirens Sang of Murder) brought readers into the elegant, urbane world of Hilary Tamar, Oxford fellow and mentor to London barristers Cantrip, Selena, Ragwort, and Julia. Caudwell's last work, The Sibyl in Her Grave, continues the intoxicating blend of dry humor and genteel manners that marked her as a successor to Dorothy Sayers.

The sibyl of the title is the psychic counselor Isabella del Comino, who descends in a flurry of bad taste to the Sussex village of Parsons Haver. With an aviary of ravens, a frumpy niece, and a penchant for combining divinations and blackmail, her sudden death comes as a relief to the village's disgruntled inhabitants, including Julia's redoubtable Aunt Regina. Regina has enough to worry about: she and two friends pooled their resources and invested in equities--and made a killing. But now the tax man is demanding his share, and the money has already been spent. When she asks Julia for legal advice, Julia and her colleagues discover that both Regina's fiscal success and Isabella's death are connected to an insider-trading scandal brewing with Julia's biggest clients. Unraveling that connection, of course, is a task that falls to Hilary.

Hilary, who "labors always in the service of Scholarship," is a triumph of authorial ambiguity. After four novels, readers will be left wondering, apparently unto eternity, whether Professor Tamar is a man or a woman. Take it as a political statement if you will--or simply as another little mystery, courtesy of an author who reveled in the power of words to clarify, outline, elucidate, and obscure. --Kelly Flynn

Book Description

Julia Larwood's Aunt Regina needs help. She and two friends pooled their modest resources and invested in equities. Now the tax man demands his due, but they've already spent the money. How can they dig themselves out of the tax hole? Even more to the point: Can the sin of capital gains trigger corporeal loss?

That's one for the sibyl, psychic counselor Isabella del Comino, who has offended Aunt Regina and her friends by moving into the rectory, plowing under a cherished garden, and establishing an aviary of ravens. When Isabella is found dead, all clues point to death by fiscal misadventure.

So Julia calls in an old friend and Oxford fellow, Professor Hilary Tamar, to follow a money trail that connects Aunt Regina to what appears to be capital fraud — and capital crime. The two women couldn't have a better champion than the erudite Hilary, as once again Sarah Caudwell sweeps us into the scene of the crime, leaving us to ponder the greatest mystery of all: Hilary, him — or her — self.

5 out of 5 stars Beware! Too Fetching!.......2007-07-03

For who knows how long, this book reposed on my bedside table in what can only be called a "pile," which serves as a daily (or rather nightly) reproach to my schedule, inhospitable as it is to pleasure reading. Indeed, the little volume's repose had continued for such a long period that I regret to confess that I no longer remembered which member of my family bestowed it upon me, no doubt to celebrate some long-forgotten holiday (Mother's Day most likely -- forgotten though it commonly is more by them than by me). This novel is, as the reader no doubt will by now have guessed, the type of book that causes its audience to begin thinking in and even writing in its style of expression (fortunately in this case a highly estimable one). As one proceeds, one feels that one can almost hear the sounds and accents of each of the characters' voices -- as well as visualize them perfectly, a trick because Caudwell's descriptive technique tends to broad characterological brushstrokes rather than copious or distracting detail.

"The Sibyl in Her Grave," as other fans have explained here, is to be blamed only for its position as the last of Ms. Caudwell's divinely convoluted fictions (not that she can be blamed for dying! And what a treat, in any case, to discover a mystery novel composed largely in the long-neglected epistolary form!). In every other respect it provides a perfect summer entertainment (by chance such is the season when I had the benison of happening upon it). Since my own prose can hardly approach Caudwell's, especially in her perfection at approximating dialogue, I shall conclude with a brief excerpt that conveys the flavour of the novel.

Historian, Detective, Professor (and Narrator) Hilary Tamar's friend Selena begins the exchange: "...All [Sir Robert] really means is that Bolton has a Lancashire accent. As a matter of fact, I'd say that Bolton has infinitely more personal charm than Albany." "Ah," I said. "Not at all," said Selena, sounding a little vexed. "As you know, Hilary. I am devoted to Sebastian, and there can be no question of 'ah.'" (I presume Sebastian appears in an earlier novel as we hear little of him here, perhaps suggesting that the series is best begun with the first volume -- Thus Was Adonis Murdered -- rather than as I approached it with the last.)

5 out of 5 stars Caudwell;s last and best novel, a little country village mystery a la Christie.......2005-07-31

This is a lovely tight little novel, which really makes you want to take up tax law - in a funny way and to research the minutiae of English law - Hilary Tamarr is the androgynous professor and friend/mentor and obliging bludger to the Barristers at number 63 - Selena, Julia, Cantrip, and Ragwort.

In this problematic novel Hilary must travel to the tiny village of Parson's Haver where Julia's aunt has got herself into a bit of a bind with the tax man who is demanding that she pay up on the return from the investments - trouble is the money is all gone.

In the meantime there is the mysterious death of a spiritualist and, it seems, blackmailer Isabella. Her rather unsavoury Neice is left behind along with a flock of ravens which were Isabellas joy.

The premise of this book sounds a bit unpromising probably - but believe me it is not. This recalls the marvellous mysteries of Agatha Christie and Georgette Heyer or types of mysterys like the Midsomer Murders - they are small country villages, and tend to be small matters. There are louche characters, urbane dialogue, slight eccentricitys from pretty much everyone and immense enjoyment all round

As the solver of mysteries Hilary Tamarr is immensely enjoyable too. A little bit naive, mildly snobbish, and overly intellectually snobbish, good natured, and always on the bludge for the good things in life, but always with enormous good will.

These are character driven mysteries and I really enjoy them - I am so disappointed Caudwell will be writing no more, even this one was published postuhomously - she ended with 4 lovely books, each funnier than the last

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous -- so sad it's the last one.......2002-02-13

Sadly, this will be the last book featuring the adventures of Selena, Julia, Cantrip, Ragwort and their former Oxford tutor Hilary Tamar, as Sarah Caudwell died in 2000. Last is not least, though, as Caudwell again provides her readers with hilarious characters, suspicious situations, and just enough British tax law to keep things interesting.

This installment centers on Julia Larwood's aunt Regina, who lives in the innocent-sounding town of Parsons Haver, West Sussex. This being Caudwell and not Christie, however, the town is populated with the same kind of oddball, interesting characters the rest of her books are (for instance: the town's newest resident is a psychic who keeps a flock of ravens and a vulture in her drawing room). Regina needs advice from Julia on a tax question; she and some friends have made quite a bit of money investing in shares in different companies and they are now being asked to pay a large capital gains tax. Strangely, their investment plan was identical to that of someone apparently involved in insider dealing at the bank of one of Selena's clients. But what is the connection? That's what this band of amateur sleuths sets out to discover.

As in Caudwell's other books, much of the action is explained through correspondence, in this case mostly letters from Regina to Julia, although other characters do take up the pen. The device works well; it allows the reader to see the story from several first-person perspectives at the same time and to get a better understanding of each of the characters who write. The book isn't all letters and no action, of course; several trips are made to Parsons Haver, Regina comes to London, and action on the bank connections sends characters to locations ranging from Cannes to Scotland. Stones fly through windows, ..things are stolen, and Selena, in an attempt to remodel the law offices at 62 New Square, must deal with those nefarious creatures known as builders. And, although this book does not end in the kind of showdown some of Caudwell's other books do, the ending is satisfying just the same.

The best thing about Sarah Caudwell's novels is the tone, the style. The characters couldn't be anything but British, but they are decidedly modern. Ragwort's trip to Cannes, complete with a dominatrix neighbor and a cross-dressing companion who serenades diners at a local restaurant, would be out of place in many novels, but it fits into Caudwell's world perfectly. Her humor is understated but effective; Cantrip, describing his attempts to discover whether another character is involved with the Parsons Haver business, says that upon his mention of the town, the man became very agitated. When Hilary remarks that this seems significant, Cantrip replies, "Yes, that's what I thought. But it turned out he'd just been stung by a bee, so I suppose it's a bit inconclusive." Caudwell's sense of humor also shows in her decision not to reveal Hilary's sex; the reader may attempt to deduce it, but the clues, such as they are, lead nowhere. The Sibyl in Her Grave lives up to Caudwell's other books in style and in substance. Readers will enjoy this last trip to 62 New Square.

5 out of 5 stars Devilishly erudite........2002-01-03

As a student of literature I spend most of my time reading literature from the British canon--learned, sometimes difficult, prose. When I'm on vacation, I want to read something fun--not that Jane Austen isn't delightful. I cannot, however, suspend my constant need for intelligent prose.

Sarah Caudwell is a kind of Austenian mystery writer (a comparison others have made, I think). She satisfies the need for good writing, while satisfying the desire for entertainment. Implausible plot? Of course, but no less plausible than the coincidences sprikled throughout Pride and Prejudice.

The novel starts slowly, but once the characters and events get moving (albeit, postally) the mind of any mystery lover will be astir with conjecture. So much fun! The last novel I read during my winter vacation and completely gratifying.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy it for the language, the cleverness and the atmosphere.......2001-10-13

The point of Sarah Caudwell's meysteries was never the plot, or the plausibility. The novels are full of majestic letters no one would ever really write, wonderful characters who would never have the careers they have, and intriguing conversations that could never really happen. The pleasure of reading one of these books is, however, all the things that could never really happen.

It's hard to know how to help someone decide whether they would like this book (or the other three the author wrote before she died last year). I'd say that if you like Wodehouse, you will probably like this (but I hate Wodehouse myself). People who like Benson's Lucia books will likely enjoy these. And, oddly, if you are one of the people who loves Pamela Dean's _Tam_Lin_, you will no doubt find these mysteries engaging.

The books are full of improbable plots, which at least don't fall apart until you reflect on them later. The plots are as tangled as a pile of extra-long spaghetti, which makes it all the more fun when the professor untangles them. If you want realism, look elsewhere. If you want beautiful lanugage, interesting characters and acerbic humor, and you are willing to take that wrapped up in a mystery, you'll love these books.

5 out of 5 stars Pure fun.......2005-06-02

Allen L. Wold knows how to create exciting worlds that beg to be explored, which makes it very natural that his main characters are renegade archaeologists. A galaxy-spanning plot, a mystery involving a vanished civilization, and places that leap off the page make this book a real gem.

I mentioned in my review of Crown of the Serpent that Wold's characters are somewhat flat. While this is still mostly true, Lair of the Cyclops goes a little deeper into Rikard Braeth's mind and fills in his personality a little better. This, combined with even more of the world-building that made his previous book such a joy to read, means that Lair of the Cyclops is a worthy conclusion to the series.

5 out of 5 stars Rikard Braeth's 3rd Adventure.......2000-06-13

In Rikards 3rd adventure he returns to the less legal aspects, of among other things, archaeology. Rikard who was the hero of both Jewels of the Dragon, and Crown of the Serpent, now has two new companions...Grayshard, a tathas type (fungal) life form, and Droagn, an Ahmear (a large serpent-like creature) who was 'rescued' by Rikard and Grayshard from the Tschagan, after being in stasis for a few million years (read Crown of the Serpent for the details on that story). In Lair of the Cyclops, Rikard and his crew head out to discover the secrets (and perhaps a few nice artifacts to sell on the black-market) of a race that changed the galaxy for the better, and then was wiped out of existence. Along the way Rikard and his friends run into another Gesta who creates much grief for all who encounter her. Ms. Toerson, cares nothing for anyone or anything, her ego is so great she would destroy acient and irreplaceable artifacts, just so no one else could ever see them. Unwittingly Rikard is her nemisis, even though he is also a gesta, like Ms. Toerson, Rikard has reverence for life and antiquities, and he must stop her rampage of destruction. Ms. Toerson's connections to wealthy and powerful people keep her immune from criminal prosecutions, and even to some degree Rikard. At every turn she is there to thwart and destroy every discovery Rikard and his friends make before they can be recorded for the scholars to study. It is truly a struggle of wills and prowess between the two gesta. Readers should definately check out the first two books in the saga, to get the full background in Rikard and his friends, but this book stands well on it's own which is good because the first two are hard to find. Mr. Wold has an incredibly vivid and fertile concept of of the universe these novels take place in, and I am definately looking forward to more adventures of Rikard Braeth, either in his home stellar region, or another such as the Anarchy of Raas, or the Abogarn Hegemony

Endorsed by Rosemary Gladstar, renowned herbalist and author of Herbal Healing for Women, this book of "homespun alchemy" bursts with easy recipes for medicinal wines, herbal oils, salves, tonics, syrups, throat drops--you name it. From the guidelines for gathering medicinal plants to instructions for tincture preparation, Joyce Wardwell conveys her love and respect for herbs. She comes from a long line of herbalists: her great-great-grandmother Jane learned the herbal craft from the Ojibway in Minnesota; Jane's mother was condemned for witchcraft and her husband was hung for it during the Salem, Massachusetts, Witch Trials. But there's nothing to fear from the Remedy Book: recipes are made primarily from the 25 most common herbs, and instructions are so clear they're nearly foolproof. The flu, insomnia, colic, menopause, and sore muscles are all covered. Any household with children will find the "herbal home medicine chest" invaluable, with treatments for everyday ailments such as colds and coughs, burns, bug bites, bruises, and strains. The publisher, Storey Publications, is known for its practicality and environmental awareness, and the book is printed on lovely cream-colored recycled paper.

This is a very good, but basic herbal. It is great for someone starting out, and if this isn't in depth enough for you, or after this book, i would certainly recommedThe Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook: A Home Manual James Green's The Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Very Best - Homespun Herbalism for EveryWoman.......2006-12-14

I have to say that I was rather shocked to read another review's comment that many of the recipes in this book were beyond the beginner's grasp.... This has not been my experience at all. I use this book for most all of my students and have had great success with it. It's simple, totally down to earth and gives a very firm grasp of old fashioned downhome herbalism (the best kind in my not so humble opinion). I love her focus on 25 very common (and often overlooked herbs) that almost any of us can access no matter where we are. I also love her rather unfashionable uses of homemade herbal wines and vinegars, that are a fabulous and gentle choice for the home herbalist (not to mention cheap and practical). She also focuses on using food as medicine and lifestyle as medicine, which are of course, really the only medicine that work in the long run. Joyce does a really lovely job of making the best of herbal medicine accessable and joyous. Of the probably hundreds of herb books I've read, this remains a classic for me, easily in my top ten best herb books.

I would also recommend books by Susun Weed, Juliette Levy, Gail Faith Edwards, Judith Berger, Stephen Buhner, Michael Moore and Matthew Wood for more great writing in a similair earth loving vein.

4 out of 5 stars perfect for a novice like me.......2006-08-08

This book is not the only book you will own but it is the first one I bought to learn some of the basics. If you want an overview of some of the most useful and available herbs this is what you want.
I like it for it's down-to-earth advice and easy to understand (and do) instructions.
I also purchased Readers Digest "Herbs" which is great for the photography of herbs so I can identify them in the wild.

5 out of 5 stars A great cookbook!.......2004-08-30

I love this cookbook. I have yet to be disappointed in any recipe I have made from it. I gave a copy to my best friend, who cooks all of our passover seders. They always have a large number of people at their seders, and the recipes in this cookbook worked well when doubled or quadrupled.

"Passover Cookery" by Joan Kekst (Five Star Publications $24.95) is no ordinary matzo masquerade on parade. I'll be serving her Chicken Roulade with Scallion Sauce year round. Ditto her New York Style Cheesecake and Chocolate Mousse. Her full page on the proper beating of eggs is alone worth the price of the book! (My aunt's lemon sponge cake swelled from nice try to mile high under her tutelage.) "Passover Cookery" is more than a collection of recipes. It's a Passover primer, with equal appeal to mavens and neophytes. Especially helpful are her Six-Week Countdown to Passover and sample menus. A welcome twist are Kekst's low-fat Passover tips. (Low fat? Passover? Think that's an oxymoron?) "If you over-indulge on a one-day holiday, it's not so bad," says Kekst, "but keep that up for a whole week, and you'll get in trouble," so the book features a variety of fruit desserts and sorbets as well as defatting options throughout. I caught up with Kekst as she was preparing for her family's seder (the festive Passover meal) as she has for the last 20 years since her mother-in-law packed away her Passover dishes, pots and pans, put them in Kekst's car and said, "It's your turn from now on." 37 family members will attend, but with four out of five of her children local, "I never peel a carrot or dice an apple. They all just fall in and out of my house and do their jobs."

4 out of 5 stars Chewing the Fat.......2007-09-01

I have loved most of Bill Cosby's books, yet his two most recent publications, this one and "Congratulations! Now What? A Book for Graduates" have fallen very flat. Perhaps I would have appreciated this book more if I was in the same age group. Even as health conscious as I am, I still think Cosby missed the mark.

Each chapter continues a theme of the pitfalls of getting old. Whether it means having to change your diet or alter other vices from your life, the body cannot have certain things if we are to live a long life. Obviously, Cosby takes a humorous approach to this subject. He does not actually claim to be a health expect. The problem is that Cosby's jokes have already been done, mostly by many other people.

I would recommend most of Cosby's books expect those cited. It seems Cosby is at his best when he is talking about the family or experiences of his youth. In his most recent work, he may be straying too far outside his strength.

              3 out of 5 stars I Am What I Ate.......2006-12-21

ISBN 0060545747 - Not the sort of laugh out loud funny that Cosby usually does, this book is still amusing - more importantly, it's an honest look at the results of a lifetime of bad habits. For folks who won't listen to their doctors, take it from a man who's clearly not fond of listening to his doctor, either!

I was disappointed to not find this book on a par with Cosby's usual humor. Still, not a terrible read, either. Read it for a chuckle, pick up a copy of his stand-up routines for real laughs.

              5 out of 5 stars Really Nice!.......2006-02-19

Whether you do or don't like the humor of Bill Cosby, you should read this book if you have any sense of humor at all then you will enjoy it if you do! It's everything funny about why good food can make us feel bad. This book is great for anyone who is having to go to the doctor... over and over... or multiple doctors because it reminds you to laugh to keep from crying! And helps you laugh so hard you cry - at least I did!

              5 out of 5 stars Bill Cosby.......2005-03-18

Bill Cosby the doctor of comedy has written a book about a healthy life stile. If you dodge diets, you should read it. If you're creative you should read it. If you like imagining people making a fool of themselves in the act of not following their diets you should read it. In my opinion this is a funny book. He eats a cookie and gets caught because he said he was going to the bathroom. If you like funny books you'll like it.

              4 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2005-01-08

In this book, Bill Cosby discusses, in a humorous way, various changes he has experienced at age 65 and his struggles to give up his excessive, unhealthy eating habits after learning from his doctor that he has very high cholesterol and a thirty percent blockage in the carotid artery.

While it is neither the roaringly humorous book I expected nor a preachy diet book, it is a quick and pleasant read that had me chuckling quite a bit and identifying with many of his observations. His casual writing style, delivered as though he were sitting next to you and talking, accurately captures many of the rationalizations people often use to justify behavior they know is not in their best interest, be it smoking, drinking or eating fat and cholesterol-laden foods. I thought one of the funniest sections was his discussion of hair and skin, where he observes that "as you get older, you don't have oil. The skin is drier." And, regarding hair, he wants to know why he lost hair from the top of his head and it came out on his back and in his nose and ears. Gray hair at that! "What am I turning into?", he asks. I suspect there are a few of us in our fifties and sixties who have had similar thoughts. He also cites his father as having compared the human body to a machine, which, at age 65, has "old parts" -- a simplistic but plausible explanation for many of the aches, pains and limitations one experiences in the later years.

In all, the book is funny and enjoyable. And, possibly, it may be helpful to those struggling with changing their eating habits and other aspects of getting older, as they step back and see it through Bill Cosby's eyes.
