Concordance: (noun) an index of the principal words of a book with a reference to the passage in which each occurs
Look people. This book is a reference tool. Do not expect to just be given any extra insight by reading this book. I don't know why anybody would actually "read" this book. I was given this book as a gift shortly before the last 3 books came out and I was glad of it. I did not have enough time to re-read all of the first 4 books (did re-read the 4th), and this book filled me in on all the facts that I had forgotten and pointed me in the right direction within the first four books if I wanted more information.
There is a new concordance to incorporate the last 3 books. So, purchase that book instead, unless you are in the same boat that I was in and don't want to run the risk of any spoilers.
Who is this book for?.......2006-12-22
If it is true that this is a concordance, it is a strange one. The warning not to read it until after FINISHING THE BOOKS IT COVERS BECAUSE IT GIVES THE STORY AWAY puts it is a special class. As a true concordance it should follow the story as it proceeds, giving expanded information and detail. Thus, where the reader is confused or unsatisfied they can find help. To have this available only when finished with the books means it will only answer questions left hanging, or provide extra detail to fill in the story for the fan. Interesting that the Hero is a gunslinger (quotes) with Colt single action revolvers, but has the name Roland and starts from a castle on a quest (quotes).
For background, I began reading SciFi and Fantasy in the Golden days of the 1940s. This, through the 50s, had Astounding, Galaxy and FASF (where much of this story was published). I just bought the first 5 volumes by the original publisher a few days ago and am now half way through vol. 3. The books are half fantasy (demons, magic towers, mystic creatures) and half SciFi (action, changing worlds, new discovery). I will buy this volume to see what lies behind and around the story, but can't help thinking that King protests too much. Authors that use that method can wind up like P.J. Farmer in the Riverworld series, with a first book that is compelling and then fades out in later books because it appears he can't think of any way out. An aside. Read WITH FOLDED HANDS, by Jack Williamson. As we progress in AI it becomes more frightening each year. It is a masterpiece that deserves the attention of thinking persons.
Good but the map is Wrong.......2005-02-02
In pag 566 in DT-III the Waste Lands, Blaines talk and said that his route follows the Beam South West. And in the map of this Book It said that Roland Ka-tet follows the Beam South East. So the autor did not make a very good verification before doing this map. so this make me think it could be another mistakes.
Yeesh... this series wasn't good enough for this!.......2004-12-30
But ... maybe this book is required after all. I mean, the last 3 books were written as if Stephen King threw in whatever ridiculous thought popped into his mind, so maybe we do need this to explain what the hell he was thinking! One reviewer wrote in his review that this book is NEEDED, not something that you just want, so I guess I may be on the right track after all. Now that I look closer, I see that this lofty Concordance was published in 2003, which means that it only focuses on the 1st 4 books. Ah, the good old days, when the Dark Tower series seemed so good and before King's creativity was knocked out of his head when he was hit by a van. It's true, you know - just compare the 1st four books to the last three and you'll se what I mean!
Excellent enclyclopedia-style reference book for DT I-IV.......2004-12-06
The Dark Tower: A Concordance is an excellent reference manual cataloging the first four volumes of Stephen King's magnificent Dark Tower series. After a thorough introduction to main character Roland and his quest, author Robin Furth organizies each section of the book alphabetically for easy reference. Topics covered include characters, places, speech, and more, and actual pages from each book are cited. I found it fascinating to read about so many details from the series, many of which I had either forgotten or missed entirely. However, as Stephen King mentions in his introduction, this book was never meant to be published; rather, Ms. Furth was commissioned to create a guide which King himself could use as he finished the series. Given this, the book reads more like an encyclopedia than a literary analysis, and the many cross-references can be cumbersome at times. Still, it is obvious that Ms. Furth put an enormous amount of time and effort into this volume, and it is definitely worthwhile reading for the die-hard Dark Tower fan.
Book Description
The new Harrison Raines American Civil War mystery - Soon after starting to investigate the murder of a Presbyterian minister, Raines finds himself drawn into the battle of Antietam. Then follows a succession of murders of young Shepherdstown women who may or may not have been involved romantically with the slain pastor. The ultimate solution to the mystery not only lays bare the town's bitter divisions over slavery but proves to have the gravest possible national implications.

A top notch read. Has all the elements you like in a mystery historical book.
The Civil War Hits Close to Home.......2006-01-19
It is August 1862, and Army scout and spy Harrison Raines has decided the Civil War is over, at least for him. Returning from a long trip to the West, Harry wants nothing more then to settle into a boring routine raising and trading horses on his farm in the western part of Virginia.
Unfortunately, that is not to be. The morning after his return, Harry finds the local minister hanging from the tree. Oddly enough, he had been shot and was already dead before he was hanged. Also curious is the note found pinned to his shirt accusing him of being a Lincoln man. Reverend Ashby was quite vocal from his pulpit in his support of the Confederacy. So, what's really going on?
Intending to put this behind him, Harrison ventures into Washington DC to return some gold and offer his resignation to his boss, Allan Pinkerton. Because General Lee is marching toward Antietam, near Harry's farm, Pinkerton traps Harry into staying in the secret service so he can scout the area he knows so well. Since General McClelland's forces so far outnumber the Confederates, this should be an easy victory and could end the war. If only he'd actually move.
Meanwhile, the trouble over Reverend Ashby's death is only beginning. If Harrison survives the upcoming battle, he's going to have quite a mess on his hands.
These books are always a mixed bag for me. I love the historical detail and context each book brings. The government, press, army, and so on from 140 years ago sounds remarkably just like today. How little things have changed. I love history, and feel I have learned some about this particular battle of the Civil War that I did not remember hearing about before. The mystery is well done as well. I had no clue what was happening until the end.
The problem is the middle. Once again, the battle takes up quite a bit of space in the book. While parts of it were interesting, it serves to slow the story down in the long run. I was quite ready to move on by the time the story started advancing again. Those who enjoy historical fiction will enjoy the detail while those reading this book for the story will get bored.
On the plus side, because Harry has returned to his home turf, we get to see many secondary characters who have been noticeably absent in the last two books. Former sidekick "Boston" Learhy is reduced to a cameo in favor of new sidekick Jack Tantou. While I like Jack, I would have liked to see more of Boston as well. New or old, these characters are real people who help draw you into the story and keep you coming back to find out what will happen next. Their pain at the events unfolding around them helps make the history very real to the modern audience.
Besides the generals, several other real people wander through the pages of the story. While the idea that one man would know so many people on both sides isn't likely, it does make for a remarkably fun read.
The writing style of this book stays true to the others. It's adequate to get the story across but nothing special.
This series will mostly appeal to Civil War fans with historical mystery fans enjoying it as well.

God I Loved This Book.......2001-06-22
Marcus is the misfit middle son of a disfunctional Roman family circa 118 AD, he insists on studying philosophy of all things! He's also in love with Tullia, who just happens to be the daughter of one of his father's numerous enemies, and worse still is engaged to be married to a rich, vulgar Syrian merchant. Then Tullia is kidnapped, literally before his eyes, and the only clue is a silver fish talisman - emblem of the secret and sinister cult of Christians. Horrified Marcus knows he must rescue her quickly before she's forced to take part in their abhorrent rites. Aided by Sixtus Julianus, an eccentric and aristocratic old recluse and expert on exotic cults, Marcus becomes intimately acquainted with the seamy underside of Roman society and discovers Christians aren't quite what he thought they were. Though she's carefully researched Roman etiquette and customs and early Christian heresies Hambly makes some very elementary mistakes about Roman names but other than that 'Search the Seven Hills' is very authentic. I just *loved* Sixtus, and the cynical Praetor Arrius, not to mention the endlessly bickering Christians.
not enough hambly in the world.......2001-04-04
Brilliant ! Worth every penny (and it does cost a lot of them). I am amazed that so early in her career you can see all the wonderful elements that light up her later Benjamin January and vampire mystery books. Dark, disillusioning, full of very bad people and protagonists who aren't exactly perfect either. All godd books require a good mystery, and Hambly's mysteries are the very best of the good books out there. They may never reprint this (given how easily offended some Christians get), so sink the money and buy a classic!
This is the same books as the Quirinel Hill Affair.......1999-08-27
The "Quirinal Hill Affair" was reissued under this new title "Search the Seven Hills". Actually, the title the author wanted was "The Babyeaters", because that is how non-Christians viewed this new religion--when they even differentiated between Christians and Jews! Impeccably researched mystery set in ancient Rome, a young man searches for the kidnapper of his feisty girlfriend. Fascinating glimpse of this time period and a great story that is still searching for a memorable title.
I wish she would try writing this style again........1998-11-03
I have to admit that I don't remember if this is the same book as the title, but I believe this may be a murder mystery set in ancient Rome - similar to the Falco mystery series by Lindsey Davis. If this is that book, then I highly recommend it. A young philosopher and his love seek a murderer. And how is the head of that strange new Christian religion, the Pope, involved? It has been seven years since I checked-out a much-battered book by Barbara Hambly from a library, but if this is that same book I wish she would try writing this style again.

Romans and Christians and Plots, oh my!.......2002-04-23
This is a thriller set in Rome, AD 116. The 16 year old daughter of the city prefect is kidnapped, and they're afraid that the Christians have her. Chapter headings from contemporary writings underscore the reason for the fear: cannibalism, infant sacrifice, etc. And, as those practices were parts of other religions of the time and empire, the fears were real rather than outrageous. Marcus, a young philosopy student and friend of the girl, witnessed the kidnapping and becomes involved in the search for her, working with the centurian in charge and enlisting the aid of a reclusive but scholarly retired general/former imperial governor.
Hambly has the gift of seeing history as everyday life and people. She never rubs your nose in her research; many the best bits are throw away lines. The action, however, is fast and both hair raising and hilarious. She doesn't wallow in the corruptness of imperial Rome, but she doesn't ignore it either. And, while the Christians aren't quite what you heard about in Sunday school, neither is this an exercis in religion bashing. She's writing about people, and her characters and scenes are vivid and unforgettable.
This book reads very well the first time; re-reading is even better. Yes, the re-reader knows what the solution to the mystery is, but the construction is brilliant, and it's breathtaking to read certain conversations again, seeing them from an entirely different perspective.
Another great joy is to find someone else who has read the book, and play the game of casting the characters for a movie. Sixtus, of course, is Sir Alec Guinness, but we can't decide between Tommy Lee Jones as Arrius, or Arnold Schwartzeneger. Either would be excellent.
I have read this book at least a dozen times, and have given away more than a dozen copies of the paper-back edition (Search the Seven Hills). St. Martin Press, or someone, needs to re-issue this. I've read enough reviews to know that I'm not alone in my devotion to this outstanding novel.
Mystery set in ancient Rome.......2000-04-04
This is the same book as "Search the Seven Hills" but under another title. Mystery concerning a young man and his girlfriend set in ancient Rome. Provides a well researched glimpse into the time period as well as a view of how the "new" religion Catholicism was first perceived. As with all of Barbara Hambly's books-a must read.

Book Description
Until recently, it was believed that as the years pass, the brain inevitably deteriorates in all of its many functions. Now, according to Dr. Arthur Winter, a neurosurgeon and the director of the New Jersey Neurological Institute, studies show that the brain can continue to develop and repair itself, even in old age, and that with simple daily exercises, the proper diet, and the right kind of mental stimulation, you can learn to strengthen and maintain your brain's power to near maximum capacity throughout your lifetime. Brain Workout is a complete regimen with dozens of easy-to-follow exercise in each chapter and tips that include:
- Aiding memory
- Stimulating and improving sight, hearing, and the sense of smell, touch, and taste
- How certain foods affect us mentally and emotionally
- Medicines that improve brain capacity and chemicals that dull brain function
- The importance of oxygen to the brain, and what exercise will increase its flow
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, interactive popular book about a vital subject.......1998-12-25
This husband and wife team have written a winning book about a very important subject--the brain. Dr. Winter is a neurosurgeon and director of the New Jersey Neurological Institute. Ruth Winter has an M.S. and is a colulmnist and author of numerous popular health and science books. They are a winning writing team because this book is informative and easy to read. I especially enjoyed the excellent activities and brain-building examples that are included, such as the list memorization (on page 98) and the face identification (on pages 98-100). There is a glossary in the back and lots of information on the numerous aspects of our brain that we should exercise--which will improve the brain's function. I am especially intrigued by this book because my 76 year old mother recently started learning how to play bridge. She told me she was doing it partly because it was important for her to learn something new as a way of keeping her brain functioning better! Sound advice for us all as this excellent book attests! As the subtitle indicates: "Easy Ways to Power UP Your Memory, Sensory Perception, and Intelligence"
nothing you haven't read before.......1998-06-23
Overall, the suggestions for powering up your brain are very easy. Many of the techniques are very similar to what you probably no doubt have read in popular magazines. However, there are quite a large number of techniques that focus more on the psychokinetics of improving brain-power, such as challenging your senses. The book also dips briefly into mnemonics, but only gives you a taste -- it sends you to other books for further reference. So, if you're looking for something substantial, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for ideas brainstormed by other people, then you might want to look at this.

Lighten up, it's just food.......2001-10-24
I think it says something that the bad review above is from LA and the good one from Houston. This is Louisianna country cooking at it's finest and it is supposed to be salty and spicy and the cajun tales, just like my grandfather used to tell while working the grill out back, are an integral part of the experience. Anyhow, I grew up with this cookbook in the house and recommend it to one and all.
just plain awful.......2000-05-25
This was a horrible book! The recipes in this book were loaded with too much salt and other spices. Justin Wilson tries to cover up his lack of cooking skills with spice. Also, his endless 'cajun' stories were boring and took up too much space in the book. Besides, they just weren't funny. This is NOT a book to buy. I'd give it NO stars if I could.
Best recipies for indoors and out!.......1998-11-21
If you like Fried turkey, "dirty rice" and a host of other great cajun delights. This is the cookbook for you. Many laughs are tucked away in each page as well.
Book Description
With more than 2,000 cookie jars illustrated in full color, this is the most complete book on the subject ever published. That helps explain the popularity of this encyclopedia, now in its fifth edition. It also contains extensive research, written by America's foremost authority, making it the definitive reference. The book is organized by both subject and by artists and companies, including the popular McCoy, American Bisque, Hull, and many others. Additionally, there is information on distributors, importers, and retailers, along with guidelines to condition, counterfeits, and production techniques. Additionally, an extensive index and current market values make this edition a must-have for collectors and dealers.
Customer Reviews:
Values Have Plummeted !.......2007-07-10
As of July 2007 cookie jar values have plummeted on Ebay. I would estimate people are willing to pay 50 % or less than in 1999 or 2000. The cookie jar collecting bubble burst. Examples-- A Hull Barefoot Boy did go for 200 easily. One recently started at 79 dollars and received no bids. A Shawnee Smily or Winnie dressed up in Shamrock or Chysanthemums (sic) etc was about 200-225 in 2000. I got each for about 100 DOLLARS this summer.
If you like cookie jars-- the time to buy is now. For folks that bought jars in the late 90s, your collection is worth 50-60% less.
Point-- this book's values are way out of date and using them will result in your paying way too much. Better to go on Ebay and watch for awhile or look at what jars you want went for recently via Searching History.
The pics are great-- but as i said in late 1999, the coverage is not comprehensive of all makers-- focusing mainly on McCoy and American Bisque
Cookie Jar Guide.......2006-11-10
This book helps price cookie jars before you buy, plus it gives you ideas on what you would like in your collection. Well worth the price of the book.
For collectors and curiosity seekers.......2004-01-16
Now in its fourth edition, The Complete Cookie Jar Book by Mike Schneider is a 312-page catalogue and price guide of collectible and antique cookie jars. Filled from cover-to-cover with full color photographs illustrating each of the more than 2000 cookie jars featured, The Complete Cookie Jar Book is a superbly organized, expertly informative, and inherently fascinating resource for collectors and curiosity seekers with an interest in this traditional piece of kitchenware.
Mike Schneider Educates Cookie Jar Collectors.......2000-08-29
Mike Schneider has provided an invaluable service to cookie jar collectors everywhere. Mike was the first author to include the dimensions of the cookie jars and to shoot the cookie jars from the top of the finial. With all of the reproductions out there today, it is hard for beginning collectors to know which cookie jars are original and which ones are reproduction.
Mike's innovative approach to photographing the cookie jars from the top of the finial gives collectors a whole new perspective on what the cookie jars look like and I think this is important.
Other authors of collectibles books owe Mike a debt of gratitude. His detailed descriptions of cookie jars, including their dimensions, make his cookie jar book the standard by which all collectibles books should be written. I find that many authors miss the small details when it comes to writing about their collectible of choice. Information pertaining to the year of production and the dimensions, along with the color variations it was produced in, are the key to educating collectors. Mike Schneider delivers all this and more in his book.
This is one book that no serious cookie jar collector should be without.
Excellant but not Complete.......1999-11-23
The book is excellant on coverage of McCoy and American Bisque. However it is weak on several makers-- Sierra Vista, Metlox, Lefton etc. The pics are outstanding. I find the values assigned to be too high generally. It is a beautiful book, but there are more comprehensive books out there.

Book Description
The garden as total art work: in contrast to western-inspired garden design with its emphasis on trees and shrubs, lawns and flower-beds, it is the overall topographical effect that is considered paramount in the private garden of China. Artificial hills and carefully laid-out ponds and lakes transform the mostly flat terrain into a magical miniature landscape. It is the sheer subtlety of the layout of these gardens, inspired as they were by Confucianism, landscape painting and poetry, that give the onlooker the impression on occasion that he has before him an intricate water colour. Splendid photographs convey the magic of these gardens, which will be a source of inspiration for every garden lover. The historian, architects and all those interested in China and Chinese culture will, however, also find much that is valuable. Of all the volumes in the series "Ancient Chinese Architectureâ, "Private Gardensâ is the one that will appear to the widest circle of readers, and will thus be an invaluable addition to the gardening section of every well-stocked bookstore.

Chinese Gardens.......2002-01-22
This book is impressive but in a cold impersonal way - I bought the book as a birthday present for myself given my intense interest in China and in gardening and returned it almost immediately. I realize this review is very vague and I cannot point to any discernable flaws in the book (other than its binding, which was cracking even as I removed it from the shrink wrap and opened it for the first time) it just left me very disatisfied.

Book Description
The imperial gardens were elegant resorts for all forms of entertainment. Rapid developments in Chinese society, the economy and the arts lent great impetus to the construction of elaborate and elegant imperial parks. The technical virtuosity of the waterways and a preference for exotically formed rockeries produced enchanting and constantly changing man-made worlds. The genre reached its zenith with the Yuanmingyuan garden, generally accepted as one of the finest of its kind ever created in China.

Book Description
The book when it first appeared was also well received by House and Garden Architecture Forum and Landscape Architecture. "The handsome book will be a joy to possess for those who love beauty in architecture and cultivated nature," so wrote Pearl S. Buck. In 1940 Henry Inn of Honolulu, art collector, designer, and photographer, produced a collection of Chinese architectural pictures that is extraordinary.
Although probably the only record of its kind, many of the photographs were taken as recently as 1936. Of those locations very few remain if any. A veteran traveller to his ancestral homeland, Henry In had an extraordinarily wide set of acquaintances which gave him an entrance into some of the choicest homes and gardens throughout China. This combination of artistic shell and unusual opportunity are unique.

Book Description
Noted for its magnificent architecture and extraordinary history, the Yuanming Yuan is China's most famous imperial garden. The complex was begun in the early eigthteenth century, with construction continuing over the next 150 years. Five successive Manchu rulers regarded the Yuanming Yuan as their favorite home, making it the principle imperial residence of the dynasty and the de facto hub of the Qing empire. While Chinese historians, and many Chinese in general, view the garden as the paramount achievement of Chinese architecture and landscape design, almost nothing is known about the Yuanming Yuan in the West. A Paradise Lost is the first comprehensive study of the palatial garden complex in a Western language. Written in an engaging style, Young-tsu Wong brings "the garden of perfect brightness" to life as he leads readers on a grand tour of its architecture and history.
Amply illustrated with photographs and original drawings, A Paradise Lost examines in detail the events surrounding the rise and fall of the Yuanming Yuan-from its earliest construction to its destruction (first in 1860 at the hands of the British and French toops then forty years later during the Boxer catastrophe) and deterioration following the end of the Qing. It surveys the recent attempt to attract through the rebuilding of a few structures and looks at how Yuanming Yuan Ruin Park today serves a powerful reminder of China's past glory as well as its humiliation.

An information-rich planting design book.......2007-07-27
I enjoyed reading this book, especially the part comparing Chinese Gardens with Japanese Gardens and English Gardens. This book covers extensive information on planting design. I can see Mr. Chen put a lot of efforts and research into the subject and did an excellent job. It is also enjoyable to read the book as the pictures and the illustrations help me to understand any subjects discussed.
An especially 'reader friendly' and practical guide.......2007-07-09
An architecture with more than twenty years of professional experience, Gang Chen turns his attention to landscaping with the publication of "Planting Design Illustrated", a comprehensive instructional guide specifically written for non-specialist general readers, as well as students of gardening and landscaping, and professional architectures who must consult with soils and civil engineers, as well as other professionals, in coordinating their buildings in the context of landscape designs. Occasionally illustrated with charts, designs, and photos, "Planting Design Illustrated" covers basic planting design principles and concepts (including the Formal Garden), then goes on to cover approaching a planting design problem, the relationship of plants and human beings when designing a landscaping project, plants and spaces, the developmental history and trends of formal gardens, naturalist planting design using Chinese gardens as a model, as well as the English style natural garden. "Planting Design Illustrated" also covers plant materials, cultural influences, aesthetic considerations, functional aspects and ecological factors of the garden. Enhanced with an annotated bibliography and informative appendices, "Planting Design Illustrated" offers an especially 'reader friendly' and practical guide that makes it a very strongly recommended addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library Gardening & Landscaping reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
Planting Design Illustrated by Gang Chen.......2007-06-27
This is a terrific book! What a nice suprise. Between all of the different areas of design covered, the pictures and the illustrations, I find myself reading it again and again and learning something new each time. The reference sections are also very useful and make everything so easy to understand. So many levels of those interested in Planting Design would find it helpful in many ways.
Well done.......2007-05-20
This book is extremely organized and well done. It sets up the fundamental framework of planting design. Not only does it discuss some commonly used plant materials in various gardens, it also uncovers universal principles and truth for planting design. Chen raises the bar by introducing plants' symbolic meanings into the planting design. The plant lists at the end of the book make it practical to apply the plants' symbolic meanings in landscaping.
Excellent, practical and informative!.......2007-05-20
Chen really knows his stuff. This book is well organized, inspiring and informative. Planting Design Illustrated is one of the few books that actually discuss the design aspect of planting design. I like the plant lists and Annotated Bibliography at the end of the book also. Great work!

Don't Waste Your Money!.......2004-06-10
UMMM, I tried to rate it a '0', not available!
What they don't mention (ah, they are circumspect!) is that EVERY picture is in glorious black and white. Yes, you could do as well with a trip to the library and use their photocopier!

With a New Preface by the Author
"None of us thought we were making anything but entertainment for the moment. Only Ernst Lubitsch knew we were making art."--John Ford
When movie lovers speak of the "Lubitsch touch," they refer to a singular sense of style and taste, humor and humanity, that suffused the films of one of Hollywood's greatest directors. In this first ever full-length biography of Ernst Lubitsch, Scott Eyman takes readers behind the scenes of such classic films as Trouble in Paradise (1932), The Merry Widow (1934), Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938), Ninotchka (1939), The Shop around the Corner (1940), To Be or Not to Be (1942), and Heaven Can Wait (1943), which together constitute one of the most important and influential bodies of work in Hollywood. Eyman examines both the films Lubitsch crafted and the life he lived--his great successes and his overwhelming anxieties--to create an indelible portrait of Hollywood's Golden Age and one of its most respected artists.
Customer Reviews:
A very good biography !.......2001-05-11
This biography of the geat Ernst LUBITSCH is really better than the overrated book "THE LUBITSCH TOUCH" by WEINBERG. It is an alive book by a writer who really admire the director and the man. It also gives some good reviews and information about Lubitsch's geat films. My only complain is that the autor doesn't really develop the German period (which is still underrated and considered as "vulgar" - "thanks" to the famous critic Lotte EISNER), like all the books about Lubitsch, it focuses on the masterpierces of the 30's and the 40's (the most known period and the best of course). But buy it, if you want to know more about LUBITSCH/the man (and prefer this book to Weinberg's one). About LUBITSCH/the director, buy the excellent book by S. RAPHAELSON "3 screen comedies" (if you can find it !) and J. HARVEY's "American comedies : from Lubitsch to Sturges".
