An excellent resource.......2007-07-20
How lucky we are to have Robin Furth's research to guide us through AllWorld. Both volumes of the Concordance are easy-to-use references to things that may be hard for some (like me!) to keep straight over the course of seven volumes of Dark Tower, much less the many books that relate to the Tower.
While I understand that casual readers of the Dark Tower series may not require all of the information included in the Concordance, I still feel these books to be an important addition to any reader's library. If you're like me, and re-read your favorite books time and time again, the opportunity to remind one's self of certain facts significantly enhances the read. Furth makes it easy to do just that -- flip a few pages, get what you need, and go back to the story.
My only fault -- and I will not count it against the publisher -- is that it isn't available in hard cover. I have the entire series, and am now gathering all titles that relate to it... all in hard cover, even some firsts. (Calvin would be proud, but upset that I'd actually READ the Firsts.) I would definitely purchase hard covers of both volumes if they were available.
Good but not Great.......2007-01-18
The book was very detailed. For someone who wants to know every last bit of detail surrounding The Dark Tower series you'd probably like this. However, If you enjoyed the series but aren't planning to write an essay on it or start a book club discussion on them then you can live with out this very easily.

Wow! Was I ever so surprised that these books even existed! My husband is an avid Stephen King fan, and even he didn't know they existed.
Great to have to go along with the Gunslinger series!

Not your usual short stories!.......2007-02-24
I did not realize that this book was a collection of short stories when I first picked it up. But this is not your usual collection of short stories. These four stories are wonderful snapshots of the Dalziel and Pascoe partnership through their years working together. Dalziel is still at his sharpest here, even in the fanciful story "One Small Step" where Pascoe brings him out of retirement to solve the first murder on the moon. Yes, that's right, I said moon. As I said these stories are totally unique, and each one is a wonderful mystery in its own right. Now I will get back to reding the series, but I am glad that I took this little side trip to delve into Dalziel and Pascoe's world.
Thoroughly Entertaining.......2007-02-05
This was the perfect prescription for the murder-mystery doldrums. I have come to expect witty repartee, engaging plotlines, laugh-out-loud comedy, and fascinating characters from Reginald Hill, and this book did not disappoint. I didn't realize it was four stories in one book, and I found nothing lacking in this format. A glimpse into the early days and future days of our favorite boys - Pascoe and Dalziel - was indeed a treat. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone, and especially to fans of Reginald Hill. Nobody will be disappointed!
A sterling collection.......2002-04-10
this is a great collection of short stories from one of britain's leading writers.
It is more laden with humour than many of the novels, but that is mainly due to the capacity for some hilarious in-jokes which Hill includes.
"The Last National Service Man" is a more a comedy than a crime story. There are elements of crime, but imagining Dalziel (pronounced "Dee-ell") jogging up and down on the spot in army regalia is just side-splitting! It's a taut, well written story, and does have some great suspense in it at times. The solution is also quite clever, but a bit of a cop out, i feel.
"Pascoes ghost" is another good story, it is well plotted, with more than it's fair share of well drawn characters with interesting and varied motives. Here, the mystery is first class, enough, really, to support an almost full-length novel. The solution is satisfying, in typical Hill style. The climax is also very exciting.
"Dalziel's Ghost" is not so much a crime story, as just a story. It's very much a ponderance upon the characters of Dalziel and Pascoe (but to a lesser extent). There is little real mystery to it at all, but it is still intensely interesting, cleverly plotted, and has another great and somewhat amusing twist at the end!
"One Small Step" is perhaps the best in this collection, offering us a Hill's-eye look at what he thinks life may be like on the future, and the events which have caused the first murder on the moon. (As a crime-fiction concept, it is so original as to deserve a standing ovation.) Again, there are loads of in-jokes, but this time we are treated to a first class mystery story. This is another one which could well support a really cracking full-length novel. The solution is satisfyingly convoluted and multi-faceted, until you really realise what's going on (God forbid taht anyone should underestimate Dalziel! Pascoe should have known better!) Excellent.
All in all, if you like good short stories, give this a go. If you are a Dalziel and Pascoe fan, give this a go. (especially as it catalogues their first meeting.) If you like a good yarn, of any kind, give this a go. If you like good writing with great characters, give this a go.
Short story collection of a funny couple of cops!.......2002-03-09
Ok, first off...no where on the front of the book did it indicate that these were short stories, rather than a full mystery. That is my major complaint. I grabbed the book thinking that since it was Reginald Hill, it was a full mystery. After I read the first story, then I read the back! If the reader prefers a full mystery, then don't get this book!!!
Other than that, and the fact that short stories do not have the time to well develop a mystery plot (my own opinion), I enjoyed Hill's writing. He may not have the plot time in here, but he does develop the characters. Pascoe and Dalziel are a hilarious couple in many ways. Dalziel is an old British curmudgeon, who never ceases to surprise the reader and Pascoe.
The first three stories were pretty good, the last with a mystery based on the moon wasn't as well done. Part of it is trying to write what we expect the future to be like, and that is hard to do. If you base your expectations on science fiction writers like Wells, Verne, Orwell, etc. we are already behind on some things and ahead on others (establishment of space travel versus communications and information retrieval). I am not crazy about mixing the two genres (mystery and science fiction).
But Hill is a good writer. For those who run out of other stuff to read, this book is good enough for a glance...

These four wonderful long stories work very well on their own, but readers of Reginald Hill's memorable Dalziel-Pascoe mysteries Bones and Silence, Exit Lines, A Pinch of Snuff, and Ruling Passion will get a special kick from them. In the first, we see how the unlikely pair of colleagues meet; then Hill stretches the playing field by introducing elements of ghost story and even science fiction into the relationship.

"Tarzan the Magnificent," the 21st book in the Tarzan series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, consists of two novellas: "Tarzan and the Magic Men" (1936) and "Tarzan and the Elephant Men" (1937), the latter of which is a minor sequel to "Tarzan and the City of Gold." In the first novella the American travel writer Stanley Wood tells a fantastic story of another one of those lost cities in the heart of Africa, where women warriors are ruled by an evil magician and there is a great diamond called the Gonfal with hypnotic powers. Tarzan dismisses the story until he sees the Gonfal at work. The result is a standard ERB adventure yarn: Tarzan goes to the lost city to rescue another lost Englishman, resists the charms and powers of a savage queen, so on and so forth. Burroughs has been using this formula since "The Return of Tarzan" when the Lord of the Jungle first encountered La, the beautiful high priestess of the flaming god of Opar. The second novella returns us to Cathne, the City of Gold, and Athne, the City of Ivory, where Tarzan takes on Phoros, the dictator of Athne. This means more political intrigue in the effort to put Zygo on the throne of Athne and another gladiator fight in the arena between the Lord of the Jungle and Hyrack. The second story really has nothing to do with the first and really constitutes little more than ERB tying up some loose ends from "Tarzan and the City of Gold" (which was also something of a misnomer of a title since all the action is in the City of Ivory in both stories).

Stop the Anger Now.......2005-09-15
I have used Stop the Anger Now, by Potter-Efron, in a private mental health setting for over a year now. Potter-Efron is the cornerstone of my treatment program for anger management along with supplementations from The Anger Control Workbook, by McKay.
One thing I appreciate about Stop the Anger Now is that it is easy to implement along with pre-testing/post-testing from the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ). (The AQ is "Designed to aid in evaluating an individual's aggressive responses and ability to channel those responses in a safe and constructive manner" (Buros Institute, 2000). This is a test (Buss & Durkee, 1957) that has been revised and used for almost 50 years to assess anger.)
I have been impressed with my clients' ability to implement the concepts in Potter-Efron without too much struggle in theory. I have seen measurable successes from using this book (including individual therapy, of course). I highly recommend it as a companion guide to any professional Anger Management program, as well as, self-help in trying to manage anger.

Surprisingly Good Recipes.......2007-07-01
I like to cook and my collection of cookbooks numbers into the hundreds. While I love to make recipes from famous chefs and restaurants, I find that they don't always fit my schedule or yield results that warrant the time spent on the preparation. I'm always on the lookout for quick recipes that have lots of flavor and I have found quite a few of them in this book. I agree that the organization of the book (by time rather than by course or food category) leaves much to be desired, but that's a small thing compared to the delicious results I've gotten from the recipes.

The recipes are fantastic, I have made 5-6 dishes so far and all are keepers. All the recipes you can make in under an hour. You can trust this book because it was tested by people just like you and me!! The editors need a little help though, have found many typos and spacing errors. Haven't had any mistakes with the recipe ingredients though... great book.
NOT ENOUGH PICTURES OF WHAT YOU'RE MAKING.......2006-01-18
It's a good cookbook with many simple easy to prepare recipes. It's not laid out very well, should have been in more of a menu format rather than food category and there aren't very many pictures of the completed products. You're guessing at what the fully cooked item should look like. But otherwise it does have a lot of useful recipes.

I have had this book for about 6 months and have loved almost every recipe I've made. They are not just good, they are fantastic! I don't like the way it is organized--it's not very user-friendly, but after trying the recipes, it was worth it for the delicious food! Easy recipes and everyone keeps complimenting me on my cooking! This is now my favorite cookbook and I always use it when I'm having company or bringing a dish to share.

As an Architecture student interested in historic preservation I noticed this book, purchased it (deeply discounted), and once I began reading, couldn't put it down. This is a great little treasure for inside information on people genuinely interested in several different areas of historic preservation. The author did a great service by indirectly convincing me I'm on the right road with his witty, intelligent stories

Paul Dowling claims to have the largest Elvis Presley record collection in the world, and he puts a good portion of it to use in this intriguing collection illustrating 226 album covers. The text is scant--the history in the album cover photos is the point here. These show the King's progress from lean, lip-curling rock idol to plumper, bouffant, Las Vegas star. Dowling also includes different versions of the same cover prepared to suit the varying tastes of Elvis' worldwide audience. RCA airbrushed in minor changes to give the Mexican Elvis a slightly more Latin macho air. The book will inevitably become a feature of any decent collection of Elvis memorabilia.
