Book Description

Set in the steamy, stormy landscape of South Carolina, Sullivan's Island marks the debut of an exquisitely talented writer--and tells the unforgettable story of one woman's courageous journey toward truth.

"A moving story of family, of love, of place and heritage and home. Ms. Frank's evocation of the Lowcountry rivals that of Anne Rivers Siddons and Pat Conroy both, but this tale of island life is uniquely her own."--Bret Lott

"A passionate, true-to-life, spit-fire tale of reconciliation and redemption."--Fern Michaels

"Achingly real."--Anne Rivers Siddons

"Hilarious and wise."--Pat Conroy

"Southern womanhood has found a new voice."--John Berendt

4 out of 5 stars Just a Terrific Warm Story!.......2007-09-26

Sullivan's Island is truly a wonderful novel that is straight from the heart about family life. Ms. Frank's real gift is evident in her ability to create such a believable and likeable heroine. The novel is set in the Deep South and if you have ever traveled and spent time in that beautiful area this story will bring back memories of the ocean and marshes of the South. The book is full of the local color and flavor of Charleston's barrier islands and the author does a wonderful job of evoking the laid-back atmosphere of this area. All in all, it was an entertaining read that is ideal for an easy at the beach. I'd gladly recommend this book to all my friends.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful moving story.......2007-09-11

My neighbor gave this book to take along to the beach. She insisted that I would love it and that it was a great beach read. Well, she was right. Sullivan's Island was a wonderful, moving story. There were bits of humorous moments that kept the story on a lighter tone. Sometimes I couldn't help but laugh out loud and at times I wanted to cry. The characters were seemed real to me and they were people that I could relate to. This book was consistently interesting, and it was hard to put down.

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't get into it.......2007-06-27

This was the first time i read a book by this author and it will be my last. For some reason i couldn't get into this book, i'm used to contemporary romance and this didn't have it. I feel bad that i only gave it 1 star but some other readers might like it!

5 out of 5 stars I Am Hooked on This Author!.......2007-05-19

Couldn't put this book down and you know a book is really good when reading it makes you laugh out loud!! I have become addicted to Dorthea Benton Frank's writing. I have visited the areas that she writes about and reading her books makes me what to go back to South Carolina as soon as I can.

5 out of 5 stars An awe-inspiring novel. One of the best books I've ever read........2006-09-17

This book is written with such flare and polish that it's hard to believe that this is Dorothea Benton Frank's first novel! Her conversational style of writing is highly appealing, and this beautiful saga is full of drama and history. There are no words to describe how much I loved this book!

This book was absolutely amazing. If you like history, mistery, murder, and comedy, it's for you!

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite A Page Turner.......2006-03-16

I read this one and was somewhat disappointed. I gave it 3 stars for the writing, the premise and the setting.

I know it's set in the fifties, before "women's lib" but I didn't find Paige Turner to be a character I really liked. The abuse she takes at her job and the attitude of her boyfriend make her someone to be annoyed at rather than admired.

Again, I know it was a diffferent time and place from what we're used to, but my Mom was a factory worker in the late '30s and she managed to lead a successful mini-revolt so that the "girls" could take a break during the day for a smoke or a restroom visit.

In the second book Paige has graduated to staff writer - but she still has to make the coffee and put up with annoying co-workers. She's smart enough to do better.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I ordered this one.......2006-02-28

I was not familiar with this series.autghor and was looking
for something new and really enjoyed it.Amanda Matesky has
Created an interesting and engaging character/series
with Paige Turner-although i found her name a little
too on the cutesy/gimmicky side.Still would recommend this
and will read the others in the series when i get caught up
      on my reading.

5 out of 5 stars A Page Turner That Will Leave You Hungry for More..........2006-01-12

The year is 1954, and twenty-eight-year-old Paige Turner is trying to make her mark on the male-dominated literary world at "Daring Detective" magazine. Unfortunately, she can't get her gruff boss to allow her to do much more than clip the newspaper, make coffee, and edit her co-workers stories. So, when Paige comes across the murder of twenty-four-year-old Babs Comstock, a beauty who was strangled with a Hopalong Cassidy jump rope, she decides that now is her chance to break one of the biggest stories of the year. Now, armed with nothing more than a pen, a good pair of high heels, and a blonde wig, Paige has hit the New York City pavement, and is uncovering more secrets about the lives of the rich and famous than she ever thought existed. Now she just has to figure out which one of her suspects did the dirty deed, before the murderer decides that it's time to kill a brunette. A brunette with perfect grammar, and a funny name.

Amanda Matetsky is one of the best new authors to hit the mystery scene in years. I determined this when I read MURDER IS A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND - the second book in the series, which I read first - and have only come to realize it more, upon completing MUDERERS PREFER BLONDES. Paige Turner is an exciting female protagonist, whose nose for news, and amateur sleuthing skills make her an appealing character; while the set-up of 1950's New York makes for a charming backdrop to the tale, complete with nostalgia speckled in every corner. An on-the-edge-of-your-seat page turner that will leave you hungry for more.

4 out of 5 stars Nice read! .......2005-08-31

This was entertaining reading at its best. The author takes you back to the fifties and before you know it you are caught up in Paige Turners life. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a fun book that also keeps you guessing until the end.

            Genre: Fantasy

Title: Lord of Darkness and Shadow: Chronicles of the Shadow -book One

            AUTHOR: Darren Reid

The quote by the Legends of the Shadow is a great way to begin the first chapter and promises of things to come. I like the fact that each subsequent chapter begins with a quote progressing the story.

Follow the adventures of Alisadar as he battles his captors for his free will and to wreak revenge on all in his surroundings. Can Kara and Dylan stop him? What is Dylan's destiny? You'll have to read the book to find out.

The book contains interesting and believable characters and well-written descriptions.

In a fantasy action story, which I believe this to be, I found much passivity in the prologue. Sentences in the prologue lack the active engagement needed to create the action to move onto the story. I found the dialogue although well written, a bit confusing at times as to which character was speaking, specifically in the prologue. This may deter some readers, but don't let it. There are some well-placed profane words in the dialogue. Don't let them deter you from reading this book by Mr. Reid.

I would recommend this book and am looking forward to The Brotherhood of the Shadow: Chronicles of the Shadow book II. Reviewer: Bob Medak, Allbooks Reviews.

I bought the book some time ago, and sincerely, I start to read it last week.I read "making contact" chapter first, because I start a Network Marketing business, and "approach" (making contact) is a must in business. Well, that chapter change my mind in approach people. They (autors), say what you think when approach people,(and it is true), and how to change that think, for a better approach. That chapter alone is worth the price that I paid. I still finish the book but I am very excited to say that if you want to communicat better with anybody that book will done.

hundreds of other fine foods/recipes. This book would be
helpful if you were cooking for an Indian guest or family.
It would be useful for chefs and persons desiring to emulate
an international flavor in the recipes presented to guests.

Positives: The recipes are very descriptively named, so one can
really get seduced into trying out a recipe! No extra-long list of ingredients.
She introduces common ingredients found in the american markets, that are not usually used in Indian cooking to create some interesting combinations.Ex: Brocolli and Red pepper raita,
Tuna burgers,Dill rice , Salmon in creamy sauce etc.

There is a section for microwave cooking.Lots of salads and veggie dishes that are totally new to indian food lovers are in here..

Drawback: Absolutely no pictures..so first time cooks and new Indian cooks, might not be happy.
It isn't fast cooking..but its cooking that's well worth the time. Preparing curry sauces beforehand is what makes her concept of cooking "fast" work.

However, I like to create a smaller version of her sauces and use it immediately. The madras curry sauce is great..makes your food look and taste like those served at the Indian restaurants..

Over the many years I have used Stone's Glossary as a reference, I have seldom been disappointed, but then I don't ask too much of it either. Keeping in mind the era in which it was compiled and the biases thereof, I have little difficulty extracting useful information from it when needed. There are many modern references which are more accurate, and certainly the study of arms and armour has produced more informative works. There are few that rival this work in detail of scope, however. Those which cast as broad a cultural net have fewer examples and entries, while those that are more detailed seldom have nearly as many examples from so wide an area.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone researching the era for any kind of period fiction or screenplay, especially anything dealing with the height and decline of the British Colonial Empire.

This eccentric collection of arms and armour descriptions began as Stone's personal glossary and progressed into the seminal work of his time. Despite its random and too often erroneous misconceptions (the man couldn't figure out how double mail was made or what it was even though he had seen it on several occasions) it offers an ecclectic smattering of the arms and armour Stone encountered during his lifetime. Read with caution, this Glossary proves to be a valuable resource to the arms and armour scholar.

A very well illustrated and concise pictionary if you will of arms and armor around the world. A good basic reference work for the arms enthusiast or re-enactor.

For the author's supposed fixation on 'Oriental' weaponry, he covers absolutely nothing in regards to Chinese weapons. One picture caption talks about a Japanese chain weapon "Above an unnamed Chinese weapon." The weapon that is 'unnamed' is a wind and fire wheel, much like the indian chakram, but a very popular wepaon nontheless.

His coverage of Indian, Indonesean and Japanese weapons is acceptable, but his coverage of Chinese wepaons, a very significant field as far as warfare is concerned, is lousey at best. "Of all places places at all times" isn't an accurate description by a long shot, but it's an easy reference for people looking into european weapons for certain. The fact that it was written originally in the 20s makes for a lack of up-to-date info, but again, it's an easy to use reference

Despite past "killer" reviews, it is a vital work: easy to use and comprehensive. It is advised however not for the novice because of scattered errors and imagionary information. One must use it along with other, refined works and judge carefully the details.

I found this book to be very informative on engraving. I found the patterns to be useful, also. They are copyrighted, but you are allowed to use them to make products to sell or for personal use, just not to sell the actual patterns themselves.

There are some nice patterns, and you get ideas for other patterns and other materials to use. All equipment is not covered, but it is a good starting place. I learned alot and would recommend the book to others who are interested in glass engraving.

this is a pattern book, with all paterns protected by copyright. how is ist possible to copyright the works of artists that lived from 500 to 2500 years ago, as well as traditional celtic patterns.

some of the patterns are big globs of black ink, that can't be copied.

the author does not even know nor adhere to the most basic principle of glass engraving:"engraved lines are white, unengraved polished glass is black".

there are some interesting paterns, if we would be allowed to use them, a pattern that we are not allowed to copy is no longer a pattern.

Every city needs a comparable collection of portrayals of their memorable greats and near-greats.

                        Book Description

William Burroughs remains one of the most complex and controversial American writers of the twentieth century. A long-time heroin addict, he preferred to live abroad, away from America's draconian drug laws. After killing his wife in a bizarre shooting accident, he moved to Tangier where he lived in a male brothel and wrote Naked Lunch. He also lived in London and Paris before returning to New York in 1974. Following his death in 1997, Barry Miles, a friend for over thirty years, has completely updated his riveting biography of this literary guerilla and tormented visionary.

This seems to be a good introduction to the life and times of Bill Burroughs. I've read little of Burroughs' works, so I am not one to judge his overall literary merits. I have only read two-thirds of "Cities of the Red Night," which I found to be confusing to the point of being unreadable. I realize, however, that this only touches a tiny bit of Burroughs' output. With difficult authors like Burroughs, I sometimes become more interested in the life of the author, and less interested in his/her works. If this is you, then this book is for you. Here, Miles (Allen Ginsberg) covers Bill Burroughs from birth to death. There's plenty of interesting detail on Burroughs as the sensitive, withdrawn, homosexual youth, more on his years overseas with Ginsberg, Gysin, Kerouac, Bowles, and others, plus a nice wrap up with Burroughs in Kansas. Miles pulls no punches, at once painting Burroughs as a genius, and again as a serious drug addict who would spend hours doing nothing but staring at the tips of his shoes. Miles does a good job of explaining the genesis of many of Burroughs' works, and the odd ways in which they were assembled. Recommended.

This was the first biography of Burroughs I read; I also have the Ted Morgan biography, but I don't think a direct qualitative comparison is possible. While Morgan goes into enormous biographical detail, Miles puts Burroughs' work in central position, and his analyses are really perceptive and thorough, with demonstrative use of passages from the text as well as references to relevant events in Burroughs' life. It is, as other reviewers have said, really the best existing introduction to Burroughs' work - I don't know if I could have made it through the cut-up trilogy without the preparation of reading this book first.

I should also point out that some biographical details are here which are not in Morgan, e.g. the use of real names where Morgan substituted pseudonyms.

3 out of 5 stars written by Burroughs' best friend?.......2002-01-12

Miles' biography is intended for the general reader. There is good background on Burroughs' childhood, a good bit of biographical detail throughout, and the book doesn't delve into the written works all too deeply. Being one of three general biographies written about Burroughs, it bears comparing to the books by Ted Morgan and Graham Caveney. Miles' book is not as scholarly or exhaustive as Morgan's book, Literary Outlaw, but is both more scholarly and more exhaustive than Caveney's, Gentleman Junkie. It was written after Literary Outlaw, so there is more information on the Kansas years here, including a chapter entitled "Shotgun Art".

This is a biography intended for a general readership. Miles' familiarity with his subject may make this of interest even to the Burroughs beginner. There is a bibliography of works written by Burroughs (but none about him), and an index.

Miles seems to be Burroughs' biggest fan. This is not a critical appraisal of Burroughs OR his works. At times the writing is very bad. Still, Miles had the advantage of a fascinating subject.

If you haven't read a book about Burroughs before, read Literary Outlaw, by Ted Morgan, and pass this one up.
