As someone who grew up admiring Mr. Staubs talent, I am so thankful that Mr. Barnstone created this perfect book. It does a wonderful job of giving scholarly text and extensive photographs of the structures. The book leaves no doubt that Mr. Barnstone was a great admiror of this singular architect. The book gives floor plans as well has historical archival text on homes. He gives most weight and time to Mr. Staubs most famous building, most notable Bayou Bend. The reader marvels at Mr. Staubs command of different mediums and styles. His buildings, no matter how stylistically diffent, all have his touch of understated elegance. This book is a must have for anyone who admires great residental architecture. Mr. Staub was one of the great residental architects and Houston was lucky to call him her own.

New York's Photographer

Helen Levitt, born in Brooklyn in 1913, took up photography when she found she couldn't draw. For seventy years. she took her cameras down the New York streets where tourists seldom wander. She photographed janitors, children, pushcarts, subway riders, and dogs.

Crosstown (Powerhouse Books, 192 pages, $75), a collection of many of her best pictures, became an instant classic when it was published in 2001. Now her publisher has followed up with the less imposing, less expensive, but equally remarkable Here and There (Powerhouse Books,120 pages, $40). It's a selection of 120 black-and-white photographs, also taken mostly in New York City. The book is graced with an especially perceptive foreword by New Yorker critic Adam Gopnik.

Yorkville. Spanish Harlem. The Lower East Side. Levitt's people abide in a landscape without foliage: a desert of sidewalks, store fronts, and empty lots. Their lives slide by unnoticed, unpraised. Yet their faces are maps of emotional nuance. There's half a boy and half a man under that fedora. You would not want to mess with that moving man in the middle of the trio. Note the nearly penitent posture on that big guy in his undershirt getting the word from that tiny little dog.

There is not a single picture here that has much of real interest "going on." Yet everything's going on, all around, all the time, here and there. Levitt possesses that rarest of gifts, an original temperament. The artist who look these pictures knows the world will always be full of dead cats and kids bawling their eyes out. She also knows how gratifying its daily illuminations can be.

Levitt requires neither celebrity nor flamboyance (much less decadence) to give us portraits as emotionally complex as drawings by Durer or Rembrandt. In this sense, she is the quiet opposite of every superstar New York photographer from Avedon to Warhol.

And as anyone who has lived there knows, these are authentic New Yorkers. They may be invisible to the crowds uptown, but what pride there is in that profile, what resignation sulks in those eyes, what mischief electrifies that grin.

It's as though each of Levitt's pictures had its own wire that plugged directly into a tiny but precise aspect of the human condition. Her skill with her Leica is such that we are made to stand in her sensible shoes, to see through her comprehending eyes. And so we are transported to a spot in the sidewalk across from a building that was torn down forty years ago. And it's more real than anything in Vanity Fair.

Levitt's pictures send a message to serious photographers. "You don't have to get outside your own life," they assure us. "All the material you can handle is right down the street."

A combination of stunningly beautiful art and magnificent surrealist satire makes this one of Walt Kelly's most wonderful books. Kelly wrote a lot of wonderful books. It is a tale of nearly random events. Pogo, Albert, and Churchy are caught up in one of Owl's "scienterrific" experiments and are fired out of a cannon into the stratosphere entirely by accident. Where they end up, no one is sure, but it certainly looks a lot like Mars to most of the critters. The rest of the time is spent negotiating a terrain filled with dinosaurs, cavemen, and other mythological beasts. For the most part they are friendly folks, but the two suspicious figures of the Happy Buddha (a fat Mao Tse Tung who rides a dragon) and the Lone Arranger (an all-American centaur) dominate the landscape as they battle for the right to protect a little Korean girl. It is left to the critters to try and save her from her protectors. One of Kelly's strangest pieces, the satire hits home without ever becoming painful, and his gentle sense of humor defeats even the most insane international policies. A truly great and literary read.

Levels of part-time work vary enormously across industrial society, from 66 per cent among women in the Netherlands to just 8 per cent among women in Greece. Part-time work was almost unknown in Eastern Europe, but is now growing rapidly in the same sectors of industry as in Western Europe and the USA. Between Equalization and Marginalization provides a comparative analysis of the development of part-time work in Europe and the USA from 1950 onwards, using longitudinal and cross-sectional data, and reassesses the competing theories and conflicting perspectives so far offered on the growth of part-time work among women. If you or someone you love suffers from this disease, then this book is a must read. It completely explains the condition in a way that is easy to understand. It also covers the various ways currently used to identify and treat the symptoms. This book was co-authored by the leading cardiologist in the field and the president of the HCMA support group [....]Additionally, I would recommend contacting the HCMA for more information and support. They can put you in touch with a specialist in your area who can better help you treat this disease.

My wife was diagnosed with this condition in April 2002 by a local cardiologist who did not know much about HCM and should have diagnosed it in January with the first test. After joining the HCMA and receiving this book, we knew more than our local doctor. The HCMA hooked us up with a Specialist at the Cleveland Clinic and where we are currently getting treatment. As a matter of fact, Dr. Lever at the Cleveland Clinic even recommended this book for us to read! He was very pleased that we had already done that!

Excellent pictorial coverage for the collector/specialist and even for those just interested in how the German military equiped their airborne troops. Would be especially interesting for American Paratroopers, both ex and active to compare their equivalent equipment. I was dissapointed in the fact that there were not any close ups of the German static-line snap-fastner. However, this is only a minor distraction in an otherwise very comprehensive book. This would be a great companion book for the excellent Schiffer Book "Geronimo" which covers WWII American Airborne clothing and equipment.

A great collector's reference........2000-08-20

This is a great picture book, mostly done with contemporary photos of the collections of Wili Zahn and Chris Mason, two of the foremost Fallschirmjaeger collectors. For those interested in the uniforms and equipment of the German Paratroopers this book is a must. Great photography, and some rare stuff that you will never see elsewhere. A must for the collector.

I read this book before we left for London and took it with me. Since we were only going to be there from Dec 26 through Jan 1 we wanted to see as much as possible. The maps were a great help in laying out a logical route for each day. Each place we wanted to see had a description, price, hours, and especially the tube stop in the book. We travelled everywhere by tube (London Underground) so there was no guesswork. Buy a day Travelcard for Zone 1 and 2 and you are set. We never found any mistakes in the book. You must see the fireworks from the London Eye on New Year's Eve. We were on the Waterloo Bridge and it was spectacular.

This book is wonderful. My husband and I took this book with us on our trip to London in the fall and it helped us out tremendously. The recommendations for hotels were great as was the information for all the sights to see. It has great information as to the hours and prices of different attractions. I highly recommend this book.

Didn't want anyone to see the title, but..........2003-09-01

...it was VERY helpful. I bought 7 books on travel to England, but the ones I took with me on the trip were London for Dummies and Middleditch's London Mapguide.

The reason: "Dummies" is stuffed with practical nuts-&-bolts information. Not just suggestions of palaces & pubs, but tips on etiquette, taxes, and emergencies, and phone numbers & addresses on nearly every page. Having never been abroad on my own before, I wanted a reference with me that contained all the essential how-to information I needed-- especially on one panic-stricken morning when my credit card wouldn't work! You can believe I was hugging "Dummies" when I found my company's service number in the appendix.

When traveling, you don't want to carry unnecessary weight. Dummies gives you more practical information per oz. than the other books I examined.
