Definitely a niche book, but very cool.......2002-10-06
This is not your standard coffee-table photo book. Rather, it's a window into the heart of a unique college... one so totally unlike any other college in America (the world?) that it's almost mind-boggling.
I came across it while getting obsessive about my older son's college search. (He's a high school junior and totally blase at this stage; I'm going blissfully insane pouring through the 3-inch-thick college guides.) I kept reading in the college guides about Deep Spings, and every description impelled me to look for more information.
Imagine: A huge cattle and alfalfa ranch in the middle of nowhere (the California high desert near the Nevada border). A student body of 26 young men with average SATs of 1500 who literally run the place and do most of the ranch work. A faculty of a half-dozen or so (essentially hired by the students), some just stopping by for a semester; none tenured. Two years of an intense combination of studying and discussion, physical work, and incredible community spirit. Students finish their undergraduate work by transferring to a "regular" college (typically Ivy League and Ivy-quality).
The book is mostly just pictures of the students, with a short commentary by each of them. There are also a couple of good essays, one by the college's president. The black & white photos are of high quality, though nothing extraordinary. But the combination of the students' images and their own words is amazingly effective in conveying who they are and what they feel about the school and about life.
Immensely cool, but only for a select audience. Five stars if you are in that audience. Not worth the money if you are just curious.

Book Description
Financial risk management has become a popular practice amongst financial institutions to protect against the adverse effects of uncertainty caused by fluctuations in interest rates, exchange rates, commodity prices, and equity prices. New financial instruments and mathematical techniques are continuously developed and introduced in financial practice. These techniques are being used by an increasing number of firms, traders and financial risk managers across various industries. Risk and Financial Management: Mathematical and Computational Methods confronts the many issues and controversies, and explains the fundamental concepts that underpin financial risk management.
- Provides a comprehensive introduction to the core topics of risk and financial management.
- Adopts a pragmatic approach, focused on computational, rather than just theoretical, methods.
- Bridges the gap between theory and practice in financial risk management
- Includes coverage of utility theory, probability, options and derivatives, stochastic volatility and value at risk.
- Suitable for students of risk, mathematical finance, and financial risk management, and finance practitioners.
- Includes extensive reference lists, applications and suggestions for further reading.
Risk and Financial Management: Mathematical and Computational Methods is ideally suited to both students of mathematical finance with little background in economics and finance, and students of financial risk management, as well as finance practitioners requiring a clearer understanding of the mathematical and computational methods they use every day. It combines the required level of rigor, to support the theoretical developments, with a practical flavour through many examples and applications.

Book Description
Since I became a reporter 27 years ago, I've learned from hundreds of reporters, editors, writers, coaches and teachers, yet I continue to seek ways to improve every day. Reporting and Writing: Basics for the 21st Century is a record of my education and a practical guide to the skills, knowledge and attitudes of the professional journalist of today and tomorrow. I hope readers, whether starting or continuing their own quest, will find it a useful and inspiring companion on the lifelong journey of discovery that every good journalist takes.
Customer Reviews:
Sticking with the Basics.......2003-10-01
Scanlan's book really helps students with little or no journalism experience build a foundation for news writing. It is the kind of text that students can keep and refer to throughout their collegiate and professional careers. It has sound exercises for students and good tips for teachers and writing coaches. It is an excellent book for introductory news writing classes.
Journalism Student.......2003-08-16
As a Journalism student I find this book extremely useful. I admit, I have not read it cover to cover, but for quick references and helpful hints it is just the right thing. Aspiring journalists or those who wish to learn the trade, don't hesitate to purchase this...
Alert-Things Aren't What They Appear To Be.......2003-01-23
NOTE: This is not the actual textbook. It is the workbook that accompanies the textbook. If I had known that before, I wouldn't have bought it. This book is pretty useless on its own.

Review From a Cyber-Unionist.......2000-05-06
This book has effectively established the "bar" for cyber-unionism. Some might complain that the book is not detailed enough or technical; however, Mr. Shostak is the first author to formally challenge existing paradigms and move unions to action.
As a student at the National Labor College, Vice President and CIO of my union, and webmaster for our site, I recommend this book as a must read for any unionist who is attempting to implement technology in their union. Actual implementation methodologies and philosophies should be forthcoming in his next book which I am eagerly anticipating.
CyberUnion not for the cyberSkilled.......1999-12-11
This book seems tailored to the Web novice. And it's not very insightful about unions either, relying mostly on old platitudes and even a 1947 book by C. Wright Mills to discuss the bureaucratic obstacles to computer-driven change.
I have designed a few simple Web pages and been involved in Web planning at my union. To me, this book offers little in the way of new insights.
An extremely useful tool for the union activist.......1999-09-06
This book gives you the particulars as well as the rationale for trade union activists to be active in the use of computers. It is fair to say that already the book is having an inflence on how union organizers function in this technolical age. Boeing employees almost all of whom are highly computer literate are doing card checks, arranging for workers to respond on line to fill out cards and to then keep them informed about the campaign. the Union at Boeing in Wichita already has organized 1,300 workers in this fashion. This book has the potential to profoundly change the way in which unions reach out to potential members.
A "must read" for the union activist!.......1999-08-31
This book is for the serious unionist who is searching for better avenues for getting his message out. Art uses interviews with rank and file union members who are actively using computers and the internet as he suggests ways unions should be making use of the information highway and technology. A "must read" for union leaders who are wondering what all the fuss is all about as well as for those who do.
CyberUnion: A Blueprint for Unions to Utilize Technology.......1999-08-30
In the new book 'CyberUnion', author Art Shostak lays the ground work for how Labor Unions currently use and how they may in the future use technology to revitalize and further America's most important social movement, the Labor Movement.
I could find no other source that effectively covered this subject in as much depth as 'CyberUnion' does. This book is a must-read I highly recommend for every unionist concerned with the future of working families. Our futures may depend on it.

A lively analysis of all the major warships.......2005-05-12
Battleships: An Illustrated History Of Their Impact, as part of ABC-CLIO's 'Weapons and Warfare' series, could also have been featured in a military history column, but deserves mention in our transportation section as an excellent illustrated history of their construction and impact. Chapters begin with wooden battleships from 2000 BC and move through steam, dreadnought and later eras, covering different approaches to styles and warfare effectiveness and drawing important links between battleship construction and changing military approaches. Both military readers and those interested in boats and naval activities will find Stanley Sandler's Battleships a lively analysis of all the major warships.

Customer Reviews:
The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook.......2007-10-13
Great book. We bought an earlier version on our first trip to Kauai and it was so helpful we bought the updated version. It is the most accurate guidebook we have ever used. This author has never steered us wrong on condos, restaurants, shopping and tourist sites. He has told us where to get the best snorkeling gear and where to rent bikes. We spent our vacation doing the things we love instead of looking for things in the yellow pages.
So-So.......2007-10-07
I went to Kauai for the first time in September. Of course, purchased this book before we went. There are definitely pros and cons to this book. It was definitely helpful while touring around Kauai, very informative about the area and things to see on the Island so for that I was very grateful to have it while on vacation.
On the other hand, I disagreed with a lot of their opinions (specifically the horsback riding company that they loved so much and a few of their restaurant choices). I thought they gave out their "Onos" a little too freely (for example, they gave an Ono to the Wrangler Steakhouse, which was not good at all - I don't think a place with that much fat in their steak sandwich deserves on "Ono".) My husband and I are "food snobs" when it comes to vacation so if you are anything like us, you would probably agree that some of the "favorite" restaurants in this book are not so good.
All in all though, I would suggest getting this book if you are going to use it as a guide to what to see and where to go as far as the sights are concerned. It did have a lot of good, useful information on the differents areas of Kauai.
Great Guide Book. Fun to know what to expect before you go!.......2007-10-01
This book is a great guide to a place you are excited to visit. It has great ideas and was sincere with their comments.
Probably one of the best I have come across and was recommended by a local from Hawaii!
A MUST HAVE BEFORE YOUR KAUAI TRIP.......2007-09-30
This book is a 'must have' on your trip before going to Kauai. We used the Maui Guidebook on our trip to Maui and now that we are preparing for Kauai, knew we had to get the Kauai version. It tells you everything from what to take, to what to see, to where to stay, to where to eat... it has it all. I am quite jealous as the author now LIVES there, but maybe someday.
Don't visit Kauai without it!.......2007-09-28
We just returned from Kauai and this book was right on the money with it's recommendations and warnings. This is a perfect example of how a guidebook should be written. It's honest, unbiased, and written with a causal but comprehensive style. I would recommend however that you either take along a GPS or rent one with your rental car. We took ours along and I'm glad we did. I can't imagine how we would have found some of the best spots on the island without it. There aren't many roads, but the roads that are there are not particularly well marked, plus they're difficult to pronounce for a first time visitor. For the new comer to Kauai the guidebook is up to date and told us just about everything we needed to know. We were told that some of the locals would like to find the author and bury him in the sand for some of his reviews, but judging by our experience it may be better for those who didn't impress to just try a little harder. From shave ice to resturants the food reviews were spot on. For the best tours, attractions, and places not to miss the advice was perfect. Get this book, a good GPS, and you'll love this heaven-on-earth place known as Kauai. Mahalo!

Book Description
The War is over, the economy's booming, and the supermarket shelves are groaning under the weight of thousands of items. New products and packagingaerosol sprays, TV dinners, canned beer, and molded plasticsabound, and the package designer's task has never been more challenging, or more fun. Designers and pop culture buffs alike will revel in this outstanding portfolio of package design from the mid-1940s to mid-1960s, a veritable social history of postwar consumer culture. In more than 150 color photos, author Jerry Jankowski presents favorite pieces of the period -- a surrealist perfume bottle by Salvador Dali, a Bing Crosby ice cream carton, "Astronaut: The New Game of Outer Space" (for boys), "Let's Do Dishes" (for girls) -- chosen for their strong graphics, classic motifs, social commentary, or quirky humor. Readers will recognize familiar classics like the boldly designed package for Brillo soap pads and an early incarnation of the Frisbee. All are cultural time capsules from a rich era of design, reflecting an image of a nation caught somewhere between the Old West and the Space Age.

Good Stuff.......2000-04-20
This book featured some great pictures. As a vintage advertisement collector, I saw some familiar brand names and also a few new brands. This book was very well assimilated. The photographs were very well taken and the text was very well written. Congratulations to the author (Jerry Jankowski) and the photographer (Grant Kessler) for such a great book.

Product Description
Contains a comprehensive listing of 433 snake species, subspecies, intergrades, hybrids, & color phases found in the U.S. & Canada. Both native & introduced species have been included, illustrated by color photographs. The format of this lifelist is, with a few exceptions, in taxonomic order, which is the order utilized in most current field guides. Recording your observations of different species or forms on this lifelist will enable you to retain memories of a lifetime of herpetological field trips. Documenting the habitats, habits, size, sex, etc., of new forms will help you learn more about snakes in general.
Customer Reviews:
Keep Records; Don't Keep The Herp.......2004-01-22
If you're a bird watcher, you know about "lifelists" - otherwise, ask a birder. With the publication of this book, herpers have their own equivalent, which more-or-less gives you about 250 blank pages so you can write down the date, location, habitat, weather, size/sex, and remarks about the sighting of each of 438 known Genus and species of snake in the U.S. and Canada. Personally, however, the book reminds me more of a stamp album from my days as a child, where blank spaces were provided where the stamps could be pasted. For each snake, only the Genus and species are stated, along with a note about the endangered, threatened, or protected status of the snake; and for those which are protected in form or another, the note is provided "Do Not Collect Protected Species".
Also included with the book is a very handsome section of 92 color illustrations - basically printed 3 per page - and 11-pages of discussion focusing mainly on conservation concerns and suggestions about how to fill in the book's species records. And finally, the book closes with a silly, miniscule glossary containing 43 rudimentary terms - many of which have little or nothing to do with snakes (e.g. nocturnal, siren, etc.), 16 selected "general" references (the most current of which are twelve years old as of the time of this review), and 106 "regional" references (many of which were included because they covered endangered, threatened and other protected species and were published mainly by various State wildlife departments and only incidentally cover snakes) and mailing lists of -
- 130 domestic herp societies (many of which are of doubtful validity or which have nothing to do with snakes),
- 41 internationally-based herp societies (again, including such organizations as the British Dendrobatid (Poison Arrow Frog) Group, British Association of Tortoise Keepers, National Association of Private Animal Keepers, etc. - all of which arguably have little or nothing to do with snakes),
- 26 U.S. and 2 Canadian universities, albeit with no information about whether or not they have substantial collections of snakes, how many specimens are on deposit, how large their course offerings, enrollments, or herp faculty is, or anything else of any value, and
-30 U.S. State Game and Fish or Wildlife departments which can provide the "regional" references cited above.
I very much respect and approve of the obvious sincerity of Scott's conservation ethic and his stated purpose in writing this book, hoping to encourage Americans to appreciate the value of our wilderness and its inhabitants before it's too late and these animals are extirpated. I agree with Scott that it is far better that interested herpers keep a life list and record their finds rather than collect them from the wild or kill them, and I salute Scott for presenting this view.
This superbly well-intentioned book is available at Amazon.com as a used book in good or like-new condition for as little as $3 or $4 dollars! Amazing. And you can even buy it on-line as a new book for as little as $6 or $7!! (At the time of this writing, over 130 copies are available for sale on Amazon.com for a variety of prices ranging from as little as $2.50, used, depending on condition.) I don't think I would fork over the publisher's full list price of $19.95 for this book even if I didn't already have a copy; but I would run - not walk - to get it for the prices stated above even if only for the beautiful pictures and the value of having the snake list for the U.S. and Canada. As an amateur herpetologist, I feel that I and fellow herpetologists owe the University of Texas Press a debt of gratitude for publishing this book, and Chris Scott likewise is to be commended for authoring it.

Customer Reviews:
Very informative intro to diamonds and precious metals.......2002-09-16
For a novice diamond buyer, this book paved the way to my understanding of WHAT to buy, and then HOW to buy it. Very helpful, indeed. Interestingly, I bought this book for the...list price about 18 months ago. It is out of print now, and used copies are six times that amount! Before you buy jewelry, spend the money to learn what you need to know from Mr. Adler. You'll save the cost of the book many, many times over.
The title is misleading.......2001-07-27
Although the title of this book encompasses "jewelry," in the introduction, the author states that he has limited the scope of the book to diamonds and jewelry that contains diamonds, gold, platinum or silver. He omits colored stones because "they do not enjoy the stability and liquidity of a structured market." Unfortunately, my interest is colored stones, and had I known that this book was limited to diamonds I would never have bought it. Having said that, if your interest is diamonds and/or gold, then the book can be recommended.

Book Description
A history of dance’s pathologization may startle readers who find in dance performance grace, discipline, geometry, poetry, and the body’s transcendence of itself. Exploring dance’s historical links to the medical and scientific connotations of a “pathology,” this book asks what has subtended the idealization of dance in the West. It investigates the nineteenth-century response, in the intersections of dance, literature, and medicine, to the complex and long-standing connections between illness, madness, poetry, and performance.
In the nineteenth century, medicine becomes a major cultural index to measure the body’s meanings. As a particularly performative form of madness, nineteenth-century hysteria preserved the traditional connection to dance in medical descriptions of “choreas.” In its withholding of speech and its use of body code, dance, like hysteria, functions as a form of symptomatic expression.
Yet by working like a symptom, dance performance can also be read as a commentary on symptomatology and as a condition of possibility for such alternative approaches to mental illness as psychoanalysis. By redeeming as art what is “lost” in hysteria, dance expresses non-hysterically what only hysteria had been able to express: the somatic translation of idea, the physicalization of meaning.
Medicine’s discovery of “idea” manifesting itself in the body in mental illness strikingly parallels a literary fascination with the ability of nineteenth-century dance to manifest “idea,” suggesting that the evolution of medical thinking about mind-body relations as they malfunction in madness, as well as changes in the cultural reception of danced representations of these relations, might be paradigmatic shifts caused by the same cultural factors: concern about the body as a site of meaning and about vision as a theater of knowledge.
